This is Our Heritage, This is Our Planet!
For the 2nd year in a row, Our Heritage, Our Planet/Nuestra Herencia, Nuestro Planeta Film Week is building a space where creatives, filmmakers, climate justice advocates, and others working on environmental topics can come, showcase, and celebrate, the stories of Latino, Black, Indigenous and other people of color in connection to Our Heritage and Our Planetthe lands, nature, waterways, and oceans we all call home.
Our intention is to create and curate a space that celebrates their work, uplifts the common threads of our experiences, and provides additional opportunities for funds, employment, education, and exposure for aspiring BIPOC filmmakers to the global majority.

ABOUT OHOP FILM WEEK
This is a community building and advocacy space for Elevating Latino, Black and
Indigenous voices and experiences in connection to Our Heritage and Our Planet;
Uplifting the nexus between our communities and the lands, waterways, and ocean we all call home.
Too often these are the voices that are left out, misunderstood, or deemed not as valuableiable on the topics of climate and the environment justice when these issues impact our communities the most severely.
We seek to create and curate a space for storytelling, dialog, learning, and relationship
building; An environment that brings together diverse audiences to celebrate their work, while uplifting the common threads of our experiences, while providing additional opportunities for funding, employment, education, and exposure for aspiring BIPOC
filmmakers to the global majority.

The Taíno warrior, Anacaona, is known to some, but mostly remains unknown. Those who know of her note she was a beautiful Caribbean Cacique (queen) who ruled in the late 1400s in what is now known as Haiti. She was much beloved, and she was murdered by Christopher Columbus and his people in 1503. Taíno were an Arawak people who were the indigenous to parts of the Caribbean and Florida. The popular narrative is that they were systematically murdered by Columbus and that none of them survived. This has been debunked with present day DNA testing. Puerto Ricans have the most Taíno DNA, which alters the narrative from extinction to survival. This story is part historical and part modern, weaving together past and present to tell a continuous story of struggle, hope and liberation, and showing the power one young woman can have to be a champion in her family and community. It’s important to note that there are currently no YA novels featuring the native people of Puerto Rico. There is little documented or fictionalized about the Taíno, so it is a great honor to give them a modernday narrative that depicts how they intentionally survived.

STORYTELLING: CHANGING THE NARRATIVE WORKSHOP
Stories play a role in shaping how the world thinks and acts on environmental issues. For too long, the environmental movement and by default storytelling about the environment and conservation has been dominated by the same narratives, that often do not include the voices of the humans and communities impacted at all. The emotional elements that make our stories authentic are also what can shift narratives and actions within conservation and the environment. Each of us have important stories to tell about how issues like climate change, pollution, environmental racism, and sacrifice zones have affected us, and this workshop will help harness your own power in either elevating your own narrative or your community. Using the principles of The Untold Narratives, which focuses on storytelling that honors all realities and stories, we hope to create a space where participants can conceptualize their stories and help tell narratives that aren’t often focused on within the environmental movement. The workshop will focus on brief introductory remarks, interactive dialogue, storytelling practice and opportunities to apply learnings in participants’ particular contexts.
