Scary is actually called Seraphin Cary. He’s an alchemist – a mix between magician and scientist. He died 300 years ago, when the Stormfall Mansion burned down. Since then, he’s been haunting the place. These days, it’s home to Stormfall Primary School.

Ivan Cary is not just the head teacher, he’s also Jack and Jill’s dad. He doesn’t know anything about magical creatures. Whenever he spots Scary or something strange happens around him, Scary and the kids give him special forget-me-drops.

raja
Mr. Raja is Jack and Jill’s teacher. He thinks they talk far too much during lessons. He also doesn’t know about the creatures. Only Jack and Jill do.

The Deep End

25 kids splashed and laughed in the school pool.
The teacher blew the whistle and told them to calm down. No one listened. They were having too much fun.
They were only allowed to swim where they could touch the bottom. But one girl was headed for the deep end. She looked around quickly, drew her breath, and ducked under. The water stung her eyes. She swam four strokes underwater. Just as she was about to
come up for air, she felt something close around her ankle.
The grip tightened and pulled her down. She panicked.
The girl struggled and managed to kick free of whatever was holding her. Finally, she got her head above water. She gasped and coughed up water, then swam towards the ladder and clung to it.
A moment later, she screamed.
NEW CASE
The first lesson had just started.
Mr. Raja was talking, but Jill and Jack weren’t paying attention.
‘Did you hear about Mina in third grade?’ whispered Jill. ‘Someone scared her in swim class. And held her under water!’
‘Someone or something?’ said a deep voice nearby.
The twins jumped. Scary’s shaggy head was poking out from the wall.
‘Scary!’ hissed Jack. ‘Must you always try to scare us?’
‘You’ve heard about the creature,’ said Scary as the rest of his body slid out through the wall. ‘Excellent. Let’s have a
meeting right now.’
‘Not in the middle of class,’ whispered Jill and rolled her eyes.
‘Jackson and Jill!’ called Mr. Raja. ‘If you have something to share, please share it with the whole class.’
