Lars Saabye Christensen

ECHOES OF THE CITY Ewald and Maj

A new epic story from Lars Saabye Christensen! We've all stood on a street corner and let the city's lights and sounds pass by. What do we hear when we listen to the sounds of the city? What traces do they leave in us? Who is at the other end of the line when the phone rings? What story can we deduce from the protocols from Fagerborg's branch of the Red Cross in the post-war years? How do the stories all connect? When someone loses something, someone else finds something different. The city and the streets are the same as before, but the people who emerge in Echoes of the City have never been seen before. Byens spor Ewald og Maj 130x205 mm / 448 pages

ECHOES OF THE CITY 2 Maj

This is the second part of the Echoes of the City trilogy. In this book Maj – and not least her struggle to bring up her children, Signe and Jesper – is in focus. Jesper and his best friend, Jostein the butcher's son, grow from children into young men in each their own way. ‘In this magni NEW ficent novel BESTSELLER Lars Saabye FROM SA ABYE Christensen delivers quote CHRISTENSEN worthy and gold like sentences, vigorous word play and surprising associations.’ VG - «««««« ‘Sometimes the author's language resembles poetry. Other times it flows with cascades bringing to mind great authors like Agnar Mykle (...) top-class literature.’ FÆDRELANDSVENNEN - ««««««

It's Lars Saabye Christensen on his home turf, the author at his best.’ BOK365 -«««««« ‘I just have to repeat how impressed I am with Lars Saabye Christensen. THE TEACHER'S SONG

NEW BOOK FROM BESTSELLER VIGDIS HJORTH

Lotte Bøk teaches at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She is passionate about Brecht, whose work she describes with great empathy to her drama students. One day senior student Tage Bast asks to film some of the teachers at work, but also outside of the academy. He wants to visit them at home to find out whether there is any correlation between their lives and their teaching. What happens when you feel terribly exposed? When you see yourself through someone else's merciless gaze? The Teacher's Song is a novel about self- understanding being challenged. Lærerinnens sang 130x205 mm / 240 pages

FULL ENGLISH TRANSLATION AVAILABLE.

Excerpt from The Teacher's Song: On 10 April 2016, Lotte Bøk left her old house by the Aker River and went to work at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, not knowing how her life would change over the next few weeks due to what others might consider chance. She walked down Blåmanngata, the sun high in the blue April sky. She was wearing overalls, a choice some people might think was (overly) brave for a woman of 57. But she bore her age well. She was light on her feet and sound of body, something she thought had to be more important than whether there were any lines on her forehead.

Vigdis Hjorth (1959–) has made an exciting literary career and has written many popular books for both children and adults. Today she is an awardwinning author and one of Norway's most interesting, contemporary writers. She has won a number of prizes and awards, amongst them: The Gyldendal Prize in 2011, the Critics Award in 2012, The Honorary Brage Award and the Amalie Skram Award in 2014, The Aschehoug Award in 2015 and the Booksellers Prize in 2016. WILLS AND TESTAMENTS Vigdis Hjorth's new novel starts as a classic story of inheritance, centred on two summer cabins on Hvaler. Two children have been looking after the place and their parents for many years. They are due to inherit the cabins. But there are two other children, who have partly broken away from the family. How do they fit into the inheritance dispute? During the inheritance discussions another story emerges which brings violent forces into play. It's all about family history. Wills and Testament is a powerful novel, which certainly created great debate when it was first published in 2016. WINNER OF THE NORWEGIAN BOOKSELLERS AWARD AND THE NORWEGIAN CRITICS AWARD IN 2016. ON THE EDGE OF VIGELAND Roy Jacobsen's celebrated essay on his many childhood visits to the Vigeland Park, the world's largest sculpture park by a single artist, and his mother's mysterious dentist appointments, is now a book of its own, accompanied by photographs. Edgar Burås

THE MURDER OF LEMUEL GULLIVER and the true account of his unknown journey

Everyone knows the story of Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift. Or do we really? Are we so certain about what's fiction and what's fact in this story? Gulliver's Travels was published in 1726 and became an immediate success, read and discussed across the whole world. These days, however, we normally find the narrative as a rewritten or abbreviated version, reduced to a fun children's book full of entertaining notions and exciting stories. But the truth – according to Edgar Burås – is that the book is far more believable and realistic than most people know. It conceals a true story.

Mordet på Lemuel Gulliver og den sanne beretning om hans ukjente reise 130x205 mm / 144 pages

Burås knows this thanks to Robert Loxley, who traveled to Newark-on-Trent himself to seek out the real Gulliver, who had moved to the countryside with his family. Loxley was looking for the Lilliput animals that Gulliver took with him before he made his way home.

This novel is about the first inquiry and what happens afterwards, brilliantly told by Burås. The result is an enlightened story that consists of layer upon layer of text, but that is also extremely exciting, sharp and engaging. It also takes the adventure genre seriously; everything that can possibly be included has been, from lost manuscripts and dark and stormy nights to detective stories and fantastic journeys. It is strange, complex, funny and sensationally original. The Murder of Lemuel Gulliver will call forth associations with the best fairytaletellers throughout history.

Edgar Burås is a pseudonym.

THE MANNEQUIN MURDER The Mannequin Murder is a dramatic account from the literary talent Ingvild Schade. Beautiful and painful, burlesque and grotesque with unexpected twists and turns. Reviewers have compared Schade with Kurt Vonnegut, Mikhail Bulgakov and John Kennedy Toole. Karsten is a meticulous and gaping young boy living in a normal Norwegian family. His father is a doctor and his mother is an English teacher, and his little sister is still in sagging diapers. All objects and events, big or small are subject to Karsten’s intense interest and exploration – whether he is holding a lengthy lecture on the history of stones or gutting a fish for his family’s Tuesday dinner. In the scree behind the stone villa where Karsten lives, seven neighbourhood boys roll loose rocks and point their fingers at him like Bergverket 130x205 mm guns. Lately they have sent him threatening letters signed the ‘The E nemy’. However, Karsten has other things on his mind: In the compost, he has discovered the bloody corpse of a mannequin, and thus he is in full swing interrogating witnesses and filming a dramatization of the murder mystery, with his mother acting in the role of the bloody murder victim. Suddenly one morning Karsten’s father asks him to say goodbye to his childhood home. An overnight bag is packed, and his father says they are leaving for a trip – and everything is set into motion. MASCARA SLEEP In Mascara Sleep, we meet Edit, a woman in her early 30s. She is traveling north on the Hurtigruten from Harstad. She isn't traveling to seek great adventure. She says she's traveling because she's been told to leave. Her luggage contains a heart that has been broken on several levels: A difficult relationship with her sister, an elective abortion, an unexpressed oeuvre as a painter, a cohabitation with Egil that was perhaps a bit too constructed, and another married man. The stillness on board and all the hours in the cabin evoke memories from her childhood, young adult and adult life. And out on deck, Edit is greeted with raw coldness and an all-consuming darkness. The language of this novel is stark, hard and diminished. Mascara Sleep is a reluctant, painful and humorous novel.

This is Caroline Kaspara Palonen's fourth novel. All of her books have explored various forms of exclusion and other questions connected to identity.

Caroline Kaspara Palonen (1984–) has a degree from the College of Art in Bergen, where she specialised in photography. She has also studied at the School of Creative Writing in Tromsø. She debuted in 2011 with the critically acclaimed novel Xerox Days.

THE ANIMAL To become pregnant should be something of the most beautiful and meaningful a woman could experience in her life – right? This novel by Heidi Furre says: No. It tells us of the emotional hell it can be to have a new person growing inside you, and all that comes with it. It is not beautiful. It is wild and violent. My stomach aches in an area where it has not been aching before. Especially at night. The aching wakes me up and I hope for a miscarriage. It would be so easy if my body would just take care of this by itself.

Dyret 130x205 mm / 160 pages

‘Furre is undoubtedly talented, with a devious sense of humour. In a playful, beautiful and visual language she tells the story about a change, from everyday life to an increasing experience of being a part of something extraordinary.’ DAGBLADET

It is a story about so much more than motherhood: The novel is a moving tale of all of a sudden having to become stronger and tougher to be able to take care of the life that is coming. This is a book that moves and entertains the reader – and will give you a lot to think about.’ KLASSEKAMPEN ‘It is a book that can be read with a moving recognition by many, many mothers. THE PARIS SYNDROME Have you ever heard of the Paris Syndrome? ‘A diagnosis often given to Japanese tourists who travel to Paris and find that all of their dreams and illusions about Paris being the world's most beautiful city are entirely shattered. They anticipate that the city will resemble a French musical from the 1960s, when in actual fact it is simply Paris. Raw and hard-hitting. Complete chaos,’ Heidi Furre writes in her debut novel. In The Paris Syndrome we meet a young girl who lives in at least two worlds, as most of us do – the world within her and the world around her. Or, in other words, the world she gives away and the world she gets back.

YOU'RE NOT DYING You're Not Dying is both a very small and an almost infinitely big novel – on how an often inexplicable and apparently needless anxiety can afflict us. It can make us avoid what we used to seek. We understand something basically horrible: Being ourselves does not happen automatically. We have to fight for it, usually while nobody is looking. But it is also a story of surviving the struggle, and of friends who don't stop calling even though you never ring back. This is the second book about Eva.

Linn Strømsborg (1986–) made her debut 2009 with the novel Roskilde. She is one of the most interesting young voices in contemporary Norwegian fiction today.

“The lock opens 30 seconds after I’ve input the code,” Nina said suddenly. I could have screamed in desperation. For 30 long seconds, we would have to drown out the alarm – in what felt like a free fall into a massive dam. Would there be enough time, before we were disintegrated amid fire and molten metal and smeared across the concrete? I indicated to her that I had understood regardless. Nina bent down, tapped in the combination and gave us the thumbs-up. “Go!” Like a bobsled team, we took aim and sprinted forward. The trolley was wayward as a puppy, but the men were strong and we managed to hold it more or less on course. We struck the door with full force. My belly smashed into the trolley, making me groan out loud, but I couldn’t let myself be distracted by the pain. “Back – quickly!” I howled. “Then forward again, immediately!” Once more, the trolley smashed into the door. The pain was intense: Somebody might just as well have stood there kicking me in the midriff with all their strength, and for a brief second I pictured the cancer cells inside me exploding out of the tumour and scattering through my body. But we continued. Drinks and snacks sprayed around us and as we hauled the trolley back, Nina hammered on the door with all her might. I counted under my breath. 10 seconds. For the fourth time, we dashed forward. The trolley had become warped and the wheels moved more slowly.

OF MUSES AND MEN How eccentric can a woman be before she is considered crazy? Not very, is the conclusion of Marta Breen. The fight for Women´s Rights has largely been about breaking the way into the closed rooms of men - in professional life, politics, sports, art or just simply in your typical bar. The women who have made way and kicked in those doors have many times done so at great personal cost. Using herself as an example, in her life as a writer and debater, Marta Breen tell the story about women in the public, and about the everlasting fight for a Room of Ones Own. She tells us about eccentric "Culture Men" - of both sexes. About I ngmar Bergman, Amalie Skram and Björn Afzelius. About groupies, muses and stalkers. About the male gaze, nipples and the importance of having enough wine in the house.

Om muser og menn

From the book:

“When us women in culture talk about the privileges of "The Culture Man", it does not mean that we hate him and fantasise about exterminating him. Absolutely not. We buy his books and read what he writes. We listen when he talks. Some times we applaud him, other times we protest against what he is saying. Sometimes we laugh at him. And on occasion, after maybe having a bit too much to drink, we might even go to bed with him. The one thing that never happens though, is that we overlook him – the way he overlooks us.” ‘We need a thousand books like this one, and we need many and different versions of Marta Breen.’

DIVING FOR SEAHORSES A book about Memory

Take a plunge into the science of memory, together with sisters Hilde and Ylva Østby, in Diving for Seahorses. The writers explore the many facets of memory and how it influences our lives, both from a neuroscience perspective and through conversations with some of the most influential memory researchers of our time. They meet people with a special kind of memory – at both ends of the mem ory spectrum from mnemonists, actors and taxi drivers, to amnesiacs – and discover that most memories are transformed and some are best forgotten. In the middle of winter, they send divers deep into the Oslo fjord in search of where our memories are stored. They wonder if what lies at the heart of memory is what will change our future. Diving for Seahorses explains memory through personal and vivid tale telling, combining the best of two craftsmanships: Hilde is a novelist, and Ylva is a neuropsychologist.

HISTORY OF THE PATH A Journey on Foot

Torbjørn Ekelund takes the reader on a personal and fascinating journey through the history of the path, from when the first humans migrated north after the last ice age to the organised hiking trails of our time. History of the Path is a tale of movement and sense of orientation, migration and shortcuts, about the migration routes of birds and animals, about the landscape's significance to our lives, about our inherited need to move around, and about what we have lost in an age where everyone sits in an office, drives a car and navigates using GPS.

Stiens historie En reise til fots 130x205 mm

The first thing humans did when they climbed down from the trees of the African savannah, 200,000 years ago, was move about. We were nomadic, we had no concept of residence. We walked, and from that the first footpaths emerged.

Footpaths came before everything else, before tools, fire, religions and the formation of society. Footpaths appeared and vanished, and new ones came along; myriads of stories, spun around the earth like the thread in a ball of yarn. “I dream about footpaths. How many have I walked? Hundreds, maybe thousands. I remember them all, clearer than almost everything else I’ve seen or experienced, better than people I’ve ever met.”

THE BOY AND THE MOUNTAIN A Journey of Discovery in Norwegian Nature

The Boy and the Mountain is an expedition through Norwegian nature, a conversation between father and son about nature, about traveling outdoors with a backpack and a tent, and about how small humanity is faced with nature. In the summer of 1894 a six-year-old boy is lost under the mountain Styggemann in the area of Skrim. Hundreds of people search for him, but the boy is gone without a trace. 122 years later a father and his six-year-old son go hiking in the same area. Equipped with a tent and a backpack they walk through thick forest and windy mountain planes. The goal: The top of Styggemann.

KINGDOM OF FROST The Cryosphere and Life

The Cryosphere is the name of those parts of the earth that contain frozen water; like snow, ice, permafrost, glaciers – and something that very few has heard of: invisible glaciers. This is a part of the world that most of us only know from afar – with the exception of Norwegians and other Northerners. But we see less and less of it, as the area is shrinking. Bjørn Vassnes, Norway´s leading science journalist and native to the arctic plateau of Finnmarksvidda, take us on a fascinating journey through climate research, biology, cultural history and archaeology. Weather you live in it or not, The Kingdom of Frost effects all life on earth. Frostens rike Kryosfæren og livet 130x205 mm / 192 pages

‘Vassnes never get high pitched, there is no alarmism, and no rhetoric about how we are standing at the edge of the abyss. In a hushed manner and with a steady pen, he still makes us aware of the seriousness. Underway to this seriousness we have joined him on an educational journey in the Kingdom of frost.’ DAG O. A SAMI WORLD HISTORY A History of the Sami World The Sami people and what constitutes Sami identity have always been seen as functions of their geographical territory at the extreme northern edge of Europe. A History of the Sami World however does not focus on the people living in Sápmi – Samiland – but follows the Sami who travelled and discovered the rest of the world. They allowed themselves to be put on display in American and European "World Exhibitions". Entrepreneurial Zoo owners such as the German Carl Hagenbeck showed off Sami people in zoological gardens. The new style of commercial publicity reflected industrialisation and international capitalism and, for as long as the public on many continents were showing a tremendous interest, the Sami – as well as several other aboriginal peoples – became energetically exploited in advertising. The exotic was profitable.

En samisk verdenshistorie 170x240 mm / 480 pages

The Sami were active participants in the heroic era of polar exploration, when the last white regions on the world map were investigated by expeditions led by famous explorers. Quite rightly, the Sami were regarded as experts on survival in an extremely cold and inhospitable climate. Their role in charting the Arctic clearly belongs in a "world history" of this people. The Sami History of the World is a unique book – nothing like it has been written before.

Hugo Lauritz Jenssen (1962–) is a journalist and author. He writes for Dagens Næringsliv and D2, among other publications. Jenssen has written numerous books, among them the Brage Prize-nominated The High Rise – a building philosophy.

KIM JONG-UN

A shadow portrait of a tyrant

On February 13, 2017, a man is killed, in full view, at Kuala Lumpur airport. When the deceased turns out to be Kim Jong-nam, all suspicion points to the man's half-brother, North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-un. In this book, Kim Jong-un, Sun Heidi Sæbø follows the trail from this spectacular murder, and ends up with a portrait of a dictator with his back against the wall, and a country with little left to lose.

Kim Jong-un Et skyggeportrett av en diktator 130x205 mm / 400 pages

‘The story of Kim Jong-un is exciting enough in itself, especially when it is told by such a good writer One of the issues with Kim is that he is such a person whom most of us love to hate. Therefore, it is tempting to believe absolutely all the bizarre and brutal stories that are told about North Korea. One of Sæbø's great merits is that she presents a more nuanced picture. And she does it completely without excusing the misdeeds and crimes that have been documented. To understand what is going on in the world of international politics today, it would be smart to have read this book.’ AFTENPOSTEN

MUSIC AND THE BRAIN About the magic power of music and its amazing effect on the brain

Creativity in music and the skills to play and appreciate music are uniquely human characteristics. All mammals seem to enjoy a tune but only human beings show true musicality and ability to communicate through music. The brain composes music to please itself: one can learn much about how the brain works by studying its responses to music and music-making. This book is written as three parts: The first part discusses what brain does with music, that is: how music is sensed and perceived, processes grouped together as the basis for "perception of music". Musikk og hjernen

Om musikkens magiske kraft og The second part describes what music fantastiske virkning på hjernen does to the brain: how it affects its func151x226 mm / 256 pages tioning and enables it to change – effects known as manifestations of neuroplasticity. The authors then go on to analyse the characteristics of "the musician's brain" – the brains of musicians have shared features that set them apart from other people's brains.

In the third part, the authors give an account of the ways in which the brain-changing effects of music can be used to aid recovery after blows to the head and to treat neurological and related disorders such as dementia, Parkinson's disease and mental illnesses.

Are Brean is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association and associate professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music. SHAME Shame might make you feel uneasy but keep in mind that shame is a universal state of mind, a natural part of being human. It is positively useful feeling – it has been evolving over thousands and tens of thousands of years in human beings, precisely because we have been able to make good use of it. Everyone has experienced it. Shame is often reviled and the public discussion tends to focus on how to get rid of shame or to overcome it. A very readable book explaining shame in terms of popular psychology: the writing is witty but founded on good research, with many examples of well-known as well as personal cases. COLORS TO THE PEOPLE

ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN AND FASHION

Did you know that gray cars crash the most and that red cars crash the least? What are colors, why do we need them and what do we use them for? In this book, color expert Dagny Thurmann-Moe battles against an increasingly more colorless existence. She shows us how Norway has gone from being colorful and full of impressions to being a landscape of gray and white, even in the summer. She gives an introduction to what colors are, why people need colors, and what we use them for.

HUMMUS AND POMEGRANATE

Hummus og granateple Mat fra Tyrkia og Midtøsten 195x250 mm / 256 pages

Hummus and Pomegranate is an inspiring and unpretentious introduction to one of the world's most traditional and renowned cuisines. Here you will be introduced to the best food from Turkey and the Middle East. Dishes and flavors that have been developed and perfected from generation to generation throughout numerous dynasties and empires. Most of the dishes included are based on traditional recipes – which is one reason why the dishes and flavors have survived for so long. And not only will you find the recipes, but also an insight into longstanding food traditions. You won't necessarily find the tastiest Turkish or Middle Eastern food at a restaurant – you'll find that in people's homes. Most of the recipes in the book are therefore classic homemade everyday dishes, prepared just as they are in the many kitchens all over Turkey and the Middle East.

Vidar Bergum lives in Istanbul and in 2016 was named Best Niche-Blogger. The jury's reason for awarding a prize to A Kitchen in Istanbul was: "Vidar Bergum's blog slightly takes your breath away. It's exotic, looks good and is also a little different. He invites us into a kitchen quite unfamiliar to us, with a naturalness and generosity that means you just want to drop what you're doing, and begin making Turkish food and trying out new spices. He writes well about his inspiration and always provides good references and tips on how to recreate what he makes at home. A fun and wonderful blog." Vidar continues with all of this in his new book. In his team is photographer Bahar Kitapci, one of Turkey's leading food-stylists and photographers.

Vidar Bergum lives in Istanbul where he works with food-related projects. From there he runs the blog A kitchen in Istanbul, which was voted Best Niche-Blog by Mathallen and godt.no in 2016.
