This time he unrolls an even bigger canvas as he delivers a powerful and eventful novel about a fateful year in Norwegian history. AUTHOR:

Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary début in 1982 with the short story collection Fangeliv evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions. He is a wonderful storyteller with obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literary Award: for Seierherrene in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also short-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel Hoggerne. His books are translated into 29 languages.

THE INVISIBLE

144 000 IN PRINT

Again, Roy Jacobsen has written a novel about an unlikely heroine, and he does it better than ever before. De usynlige is a monument over human courage and life-saving practical and social knowledge. The novel is set in the first half of the 20th century on an island on the North-Western coast of Norway. The island is small, there is only space for the Barrøy family. Life on the island is difficult. The Barrøy family is poor, but certainly not without guts and skills. They live off of their small land, they have some livestock, they fish in the sea and make use of whatever the waves wash ashore.

AUTHOR:

ROY JACOBSEN TITLE ENGLISH:

THE INVISIBLE TITLE NORWEGIAN:

DE USYNLIGE

Jacobsen’s descriptions of man and nature are breathtaking. There is plenty of light here, even humor. The family’s daily work is a balancing act between refining the riches that wild nature so generously offers, and surviving in the very same wild nature that takes lives. The family’s love for their environment is brilliantly communicated. A life somewhere else is unthinkable to them.

De usynlige is inspired by real people, who Jacobsen knew in his childhood. It is a family saga, and a coming-of-age story about Ingrid. It can also be labeled a Robinsonade. ‘Equipped with a playful and subtly changing omniscient narrator, Jacobsen moves in and out of the various family members and gives each and every one a quivering presence in the text … Roy Jacobsen’s new novel is simply literature of a high class.’ AFTENPOSTEN

MAGNET For nearly three years, every single day, Lars Saabye Christensen has been writing his new novel. It will be standing as a major work in his authorship. As BEATLES was his great youth work, and THE HALF-BROTHER the middle-aged man's masterpiece, MAGNET is his recent great novel. In this he has invested everything he has, and at the same time – and it is the most impressive – it seems that he is doing something completely new. MAGNET is a love story. It is about a mismatched couple who try everything they can to pull in the same direction. Jokum and Synne meet each other at Sogn Student Village in Oslo in the seventies. They are located next to each other, on each side of the wall. They marry in San Franscico in the eighties, where they begin to climb in the art world. Then they come each other too close and split up in the nineties.

Jokum is a photographer who will take pictures of the ordinary, he will see the beauty and melancholy in the world. Synne is an art historian with Edward Hopper as specialty. Through his pictures he will show how time is present in everything we have. He manages this. Until he takes a picture of their dead child.

Lars Saabye Christensen (1953–) made his literary début in 1976 with Historien om Gly. His break-through novel was Beatles, which is one of the greatest literary successes in Norway and which continues to speak to new generations. He received both the Book Seller's Prize and the Nordic Council's Literary Award for the novel Halvbroren in 2001. This novel also marked his break-through to the international market. His works are translated into 35 languages.

Jokum was as usual the last one in the library. He was studying Literary Science, in his foundation year. He thought he was going to be a writer. He didn’t. He became a photographer. This was in April 1976. It was even a Friday. He had to finish the group project on Franz Kafka’s The Trial. But the others in the group had to do that too, and they had all finished long ago. Was Jokum lazier than them, or more diligent? Not possible to say yet. He thought: I’m last again. I’m last again again. He had already written eight A4 pages, lined, but didn’t think he had anything, not anything he was willing to acknowledge. In general it seemed to him that less was much. Much? What was much? Jokum didn’t have the answer to that either. What he was writing he’d either read somewhere else or heard from someone else, this business about the individual being crushed and obliterated by the system, the hell fires of bureaucracy, everything that’s already written there, in black and white, the obvious, stuff you could yawn your way to even on a bad day. And this was a bad day. It was Friday. But then there was something about this novel, something that was already completely recognized and accepted, that Jokum couldn’t seem to get hold of. It bothered him. He wanted to say something original, something unique, something at least personal, best of all something new, a thought that had never been thought before. But then, how could he know? If such a thought, against all odds, should come to him, how could he know it had not already come to someone else? It was impossible.

CHILDREN OF ETERNITY In Evighetsbarna we meet Siri, Louise and Tomas, who are trying to understand what it means to be adults as they are thrown into experiencing contrasts between strong interdependence and stark loneliness one winter and spring on the island of Södermalm in the city of Stockholm. In this new novel, Beate Grimsrud tries to extend the bounds of narrative with her blending of realism with poetry, humour and philosophical gravity. André considers that to live with an animal is to re-imagine and portray oneself as a representative of humanity. As an adult you can do what you want. Siri thinks otherwise; you won't always want to do that. Space is a huge listening ear.

Beate Grimsrud’s greatness and strength – for she is one of our great Scandinavian authors – are in the voices, the spaces between the words, the rhythm, the flows of thought, the contrasts, the language. Despite her dyslexia she writes relaxed, strong, independent, soaring prose. It is often mournful and not infrequently funny – often both at the same time. VÄSTERBOTTENS-KURIREN.

Beate Grimsrud (1963–) is a creative and versatile writer. She made her début with the short story collection Det fins grenser for hva jeg ikke forstår in 1990, and in 1998 she was nominated for the Nordic Council Literary Award for her novel Å smyge forbi en øks. In 2007 she published her first children's book: Klar ferdig gå!, which was co-authored by Inger Alfvén. Her international break-through came in 2010 with the novel En dåre fri. The title Evighetsbarna refers to people who have never had children, those who have reached the age of 42 without having been parents. The stories of four perpetual children are told by two of them, André and Siri. They live in the same district on the island of Södermalm in the city of Stockholm. Every day they pass the same Romanian beggar and every day they come across the woman who wanders around restlessly with an empty dog-lead, calling for her beloved Bosse. They also have an eye for each other. Siri sees André as someone she would like to know. He often has his cat on his shoulder. André sees Siri’s pregnant abdomen. He knows that she has a second-hand shop and he thinks she is sweet, but he doesn’t know that she has a phantom pregnancy. Siri also has an American girl friend, Louise, who works as a make-up artist for television and who can tell whether people are wearing lipstick or not just by speaking with them on the telephone. Louise has been self-harming since her youth, and another of her burdens is unrestrained shopping. When Siri is seen by a psychiatrist because she refuses to accept that she has a phantom pregnancy, she doesn’t tell Louise anything about it. This creates a continuing barrier in their relationship and one evening after they have had sex, Siri finds Louise bleeding in the shower after cutting herself. Siri abandons Louise, but they find their way back together again and admit that they were both at fault. Tomas is André’s friend. He works as a photographer in the hospital where André is an anaesthetic nurse. Tomas needs fixed routines, and when they decide to go to London to watch football, that turns out to be too difficult for him. One evening André phones Thomas, desperately upset because his lover, Lena, has left him. He begs to come to Tomas’s house, but Tomas has a booking for the laundry room and can only cope with one thing at a time. André realises that if he is to be a friend of Tomas, he must accept Tomas as he is. Great loneliness and strong relationships co-exist throughout this book. Beate Grimsrud presents her characters with great warmth, understanding and respect, and it is not difficult to identify with and enjoy them. The novel also offers us humorous scenes and of course Grimrud’s particular style: André considers that to live with an animal is to re-imagine and portray oneself as a representative of humanity. As an adult you can do what you want. Siri thinks otherwise; you won’t always want to do that. Space is a huge listening ear.

FOR YOU, FOR YOU ALONE To all single mothers is the dedication at the front of Line Nyborg's new novel For deg, for deg alene. It is a self-sufficient sequel to Bare Mamma som er Gud (2010) and Du vet ikke hvem jeg er (2012). Nyborg's first book got many glowing reviews, and her second won the Havmann Prize for the best North Norwegian novel that year. These three novels have a certain family resemblance to Cora Sandel's Alberte trilogy, in the way they follow a young, slightly inhibited woman's development and incipient liberation.

Or could it be Arvid, the man who is so distant and who comes from posh Slemdal, from a background quite different from her own?

FICTION

BEFORE THEY COME TO FETCH US It is always a sign of quality when the second book is better than the first, but this is particularly impressive when it is better than a Vesaas Prize winning debut novel. In Peter Strassegger's new novel we meet Alma, who is married to Oscar. She is old, and he is much older. They live in a ruined and neglected landscape where the rich earth has been washed away by rain and flood. In these almost post-apocalyptic conditions the pair of them go home and wait to be fetched. It is unclear who will come to fetch them or where they will take them. Every time they think they see a car at one of the neighbours they scurry slow-footedly up the stairs to put on their Sunday best. They have clear ideas about how they are to be fetched, and they hope it will be done correctly.

Alma is the spokesperson, and through her eyes we see the scorched, ash-grey landscape with only a couple of occupied houses, where the only accessible shop is a filling station which is about to be demolished. In flashbacks and in the present time we also meet Elisa, the neighbour who spends her days sitting out on the veranda of her grand house. She has a place there for Alma if she wants to come to visit, but otherwise the door is bolted.

Elisa can also see who passes by, because her son Ulrik the watchman has had a camera set up for her. Nobody shall come to take Elisa away, as long as she can do anything about it, certainly not so long as she has Ulrik. In case anybody should be in doubt, this is a very special novel, and like Peter's first book it is refreshingly un-Norwegian.

SAVE THE CHILDREN Tanja has moved to Hakadal outside of Olso with her husband and two children. Here she tries to build a home, make packed lunches, keep the driveway clear of snow, teach her children the difference between right and wrong – and put the past behind her. This proves more difficult that she initially imagined. When her mother dies, Tanja gets back in touch with her brother Mikael, who has problems with substance abuse. ’Everything will fix itself overnight,’ Tanja used to tell herself. She imagines falling asleep and that an ingenious clock is ticking inside her – securing, rerouting and reinstalling. But that is not how it works any more. At night the floodgates open. ‘Tiril Broch Aakre’s first novel is stimulating, exciting and full of energy. Over and above the day by day excitement, much of the joy of this novel is in the language, which is clear, sensitive and vivid.’ DAGBLADET

‘Broch Aakre explores the depths which others avoid. She shapes beautiful pictures: The pregnant woman who stands in the kitchen every night drinking cold milk, with the past behind her and the future ahead of her, deserves to become a pillar in Norwegian literature.’ KLASSEKAMPEN

‘This is a novel about caring for each other, and about the feelings of despair when you are not able to protect your loved ones as you would wish. The theme is well known, but the quietly spoken and intimate language make this book a powerful experience for the reader.’ KVINNER & KLÆR

‘In just 124 pages, Tiril Broch Aakre succeeds in convincing us that she is an author whose reputation will continue to grow … Save the Children is a moving novel.’ NRK

’Tiril Broch Aakre places herself unrestrictedly in a genre of family realism, while allowing room for the political milieu … Aakre is at her best writing extraordinarily about the ordinary.’ MORGENBLADET

‘This is a good debut novel which explores family life and loneliness, blood ties and love, dark times and powerlessness. Tightly written, but open. … The success of Save the Children as a really very good novel lies partly in the way the story is told and partly in the way Aakre manages to place the family in a wider, let us call it political, environment. … 125 pages are quickly read, but the story lingers long after. GRANDIOSA Nikolai has, to his great despair, forgotten to decline his invitation to the residents' association's annual dinner. This means that he must spend an entire evening as a guest of Rolf Slependen, a nouveau-riche architect who has build himself a luxury apartment on the top floor of the tallest apartment building in the condominium. The other guests represent a cross section of the new cultural elite: the artistic director of a theatre, a publisher, an author, a retired surgeon – and behind the kitchen counter there is a nationally renowned chef. As dinner progresses, the atmosphere around the table becomes more and more tense. Mr and Mrs Slependen are clearly drunk before the main course is even served. And it is clear to the guests that they were not invited to the Slependen's house out of politeness, but to bear witness to a merciless battle between spouses. Grandiosa is a hysterically funny novel about art and kitsch, architecture and the self-image of new culture capitalists.

THE HUMAN SHARK K2 and Patricia have officially become lovers when this book starts. It is the summer of 1972, and K2 is invited to a sociable weekend at a beautifully situated hotel in South Norway. The only drawback is that the hotel is on an island which is not really wheel-chair friendly. Nevertheless, Patricia comes too, on what will turn out to be a fateful weekend outing. Exactly ten years previously, a little baby boy had been found beaten to death at the hotel. His twin sisters were supposed to be looking after him, and they both swore that they had nothing to do with the murder. However, one of the sisters disappeared right after the misdeed was discovered. The child's mother committed suicide soon after, but the surviving guests from that gruesome weekend are now gathered at the hotel, and the manager's plan is for K2 to solve the mystery.

HAMSUN AND HITLER THE JOURNEY

WINNER OF THE CRITICS PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION 2014

On Saturday 26th June 1943, Hitler granted one of his rare audiences to a writer, the Norwegian Knut Hamsun, then generally hailed as the greatest living writer of the Germanic peoples, a contemporary Goethe. The meeting started jovially, but ended in disaster. While Hamsun insisted on his loyalty to the Führer, he also spoke out against him, interrupting a man who was not used to being interrupted. A furious Hitler ended the conversation after 45 minutes – and Hamsun and his entourage left in disappointment.

After a teaser which takes the reader straight into the journey, the book – in order to establish the premises of what took place – considers a few episodes from Hamsun's life up until 1943. These include his attempt at doing away with the father figure Ibsen, his Nobel Prize and rise to fame, how he became the favourite of the German far right, his interventions on behalf of Nazi Germany during the war, his antisemitism and allegiance to the idea of the Germanic peoples, as well as Goebbels' glowing reception of his favourite writer in May 1943. A month later Knut Hamsun sets off to Vienna as the star attraction of a big nazi propaganda show, a congress of nazi journalists. It is after having been celebrated as a great success in the second capital of the Reich, that Hamsun is flown on to Berghof, Hitler's mountain residence in Southern Bavaria.

He did it before, when he fled to Gran Canaria. A Norwegian woman called Emilie tried to help him that time. In the end he was discovered and deported anyway. The last thing Samuel received from Emilie was a piece of paper with her address on it. He is now standing outside her house in Bærum, with experiences behind him that no one in this foreign country could start to comprehend.

‘For being a young adult book, this material is tremendously powerful.’ GJENGANGEREN

Like most teenagers, Emilie is concerned about her appearance. Clothes, body and calories. But Emilie takes it even further. She works out every day and eats as little as possible. Every meal is a fight. Now Emilie and her family are going to spend the holidays on the Grand Canary. After lunch she sets out for a jog, while only a few kilometers away a boatful of African refugees washes ashore. Soon their paths will cross. Simon Stranger (1976–) made his literary début as a children's author with the picture book Krusedullen in 2005. In 2006, Gjengangeren was awarded Riksmålsprisen. THE HUNTER A TALE FROM THE WOODS In Jegeren, Per Dybvig describes a world where displacement of identity and absence of civilisation are obvious. The presence of nature is just as obvious. The mountains tower above people and animals, and flowers are in bloom, but the people and the animals are in a worse situation. The animals seem to have mutated, acquiring alien features of both nature and people. Where horns once protruded, tree stems can now grow. Hares walk on two legs, chain-smoking with one paw and carrying a pistol in the other.

AUTHOR:

PER DYBVIG TITLE ENGLISH:

THE HUNTER

Jegeren draws the changes from many genres, such as the folk tale and the Western. It can perhaps be read as an absurd fable full of tripwires. Inspired by Georg Pencz' woodcut from 1535, 'The hunter caught by the hares,' Per Dybvig uses great originality and black humour, peculiar internal logic and razor-sharp felt-tip pen to combine the brutal and the beautiful, the evil and the empathetic, conjuring up a world which despite the macabre and gloom perhaps most of all shows a tender streak of hope.

SECRET HUTS Sometimes you just want to be alone; alone with your ideas; alone with good experiences; alone among the huts you are building. But then someone comes along who wants to be with you. A friend who isn't necessarily a best friend; someone who takes away important bits of wood; who makes strange suggestions; who even uses the floor of the finest wooden hut as a toilet. Prize-winning author and illustrator Anna Fiske brings a lot of humour to her description of what it is like to have somebody close by you when you really don't want to have anybody close by; when somebody just worms their way in. WINNER OF CAPPELEN DAMM’S CHILDREN’S NOVEL COMPETITION

På rømmen i dusteland is the winner of Cappelen Damm's children's novel competition. AUTHOR:

From the jury's assessment: ‘Cathrine Myhre Solbjør's manuscript is teasing, fast-paced and original. The style is loud but thoughtful, catching the intensity of children's experiences. It makes fun of the adult world and demonstrates emphatically that if there are people who do many strange and childish things, they are the grown-ups. Whether it is the main character's mother who blogs about every trivial incident, or her father who does push-ups in the yard and is so stressed-out that he puts the pizza into the dishwasher to warm.

BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Fredrik has the world's biggest smile. He is worldly-wise and always knows what to say. Everyone who meets him is soon captivated. And now he's Elin's boyfriend. Imagine that! It's like landing the lead role in a romantic film. Really, it is. Right up until text messages from Bjørn start arriving. And right up until the worst thing imaginable happens. Fordi jeg elsker deg is Elin's story. A story about love and being in love, and about manipulation, abuse and deceit. Helene Uri has written a book that is touching and shocking, but that also depicts the vulnerability and mood swings of youth. Protagonist Elin is in no way a victim. She is clearheaded and strong and knows what she wants. This only makes the age-old question for abusive relationships all the more valid: why does she stay?
