Chapter 1
Where you will hear about how Suzanne and Yuri sprint off into the night
It was a cold night, with the sky full of stars. All the magical, incredible stuff was about to begin.
All the magical, incredible stuff. It was just after seven. It was dark, and most people in the small town of Bumblewood were indoors. It was a typical Friday night.
Only a few kids were out playing. Among them were Suzanne and Yuri. They were best friends.
Suzanne stood outside the supermarket in her thick jacket.
She eyed Yuri suspiciously. He was the one who always wore a yellow T-shirt with “YES” written across the chest, even when it was only five degrees outside. (In case anyone’s wondering: YES were also his initials. Yuris full name was Yuri Edgar Smith
Suzanne saw Yuri tapping his foot quickly against the ground. He was about to start running.
Oh no!
She had to say something. Fast. Before it was too late. She just didn’t have the energy to race Yuri. Again.
She cleared her throat.
‘Hey, Yuri? Tomorrow is the Animal Talent Show at the sports hall.’
‘I know. You’ve mentioned it a thousand times.’
‘Then you also know that –’
Yuri sighed.
‘Yeah, the first price is ten pizzas at Burgers & More.’
Yuri gazed up sadly at the sky.
‘Anyway, Wilfred’s pedigree dog will win. Like it does every year.’
Suzanne snorted.
‘He doesn’t even need the prize, rich and grumpy as he is.’
‘And mean,’ added Yuri. ‘Don’t forget that.’
Yuri had just stopped speaking when his tummy started growling.
Today he’d only had a sandwich for dinner.
Yuri lived with his mum in a small caravan a little way outside of Bumblewood. They didn’t have much money.
He glanced at Suzanne. Oh no. She had the usual dreamy look on her face.
‘Imagine if I had a dog,’ Suzanne sighed.
‘Isn’t your dad –’ ‘– allergic?’ Suzanne waved her hands.
‘That’s nonsense, really. He just doesn’t want the responsibility.’
‘Maybe you could borrow a dog?’ Yuri suggested.
Suzanne raised an eyebrow. ‘Who would you borrow a dog from?’
‘Well … I don’t know.’
Yuri’s foot tapped faster and faster against the ground. Finally, he couldn’t hold back any longer.
‘Last one to the Dog Field is a wimp!’
And with that, he shot off into the night.
Chapter 2
Where you will hear about how dog lovers and dog haters arrive at the Dog Field at the same time
The Dog Field was a corner of the city park where dogs and their owners would gather. Here, the dogs could play freely, sniff each other’s bums, chase sticks like mad – and do other dog stuff.
Both Suzanne and Yuri enjoyed being there.
Suzanne, because she loved dogs above all other things.
Yuri, because he loved running.
Right now, he stretched out his arms like the wings of a plane. He rushed into the Dog Field at full speed.
‘Woo-hoo! Look at me! I’m a spaceship! I’m gonna fly across the universe! Whoosh!’
Suzanne yelled back, ‘You’re going to step in dog poo, Yuri!’
‘Oh no, I won’t! laughed Yuri, because I’m really good at zigzagging. Just watch!’
Yuri laughed and ran and skipped between the dog poos the Dog Field was full of.
Suzanne groaned and looked around.
But … there were … no dogs here tonight? Not a single one? What?
Her jaw dropped to her chest.
Just then, two incredible things happened at once.
One was that the group of friends known as the W Crew came sauntering over to the Dog Field.
It was more than a little strange. Because those three thought that pets were dumb, and only for little kids in nursery school.
Well, it was sort of only Wilfred who thought that.
Or … to be honest, he didn’t really either.
He always had to go with his mum, Carolina Puddleston. They went to a billion dog shows with their purebred Grand Truffle Retriever, Dorian.
Dog shows was the most boring thing in the entire world, thought Wilfred.
On top of that, his mum also forced him to take Dorian to the Animal Talent Show in the sports hall EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
Actually, Wilfred was really pretty fond of Dorian and cuddled him quite a lot. But only when he was sure no one was watching.
When he was with his group, he HATED dogs, and that meant that everyone else in the group had to hate them too.
Who were everyone else in the group?
Simon and Grizelda, the twins.
If they didn’t, Wilfred would punch them hard in the shoulder. And it would hurt for two days.
None of them wanted that, obviously.
Which is why it was pretty worrying to see the W Crew here at the Dog Field. It was also suspicious. Well, it could only really mean one thing:
TROUBLE
‘Check it out!’ whispered Wilfred, pointing at Suzanne and Yuri. ‘It’s those losers from 3rd grade! Do you know what I’m thinking?’
Simon scratched his head.
‘Uh … no?’
A slow smile spread across Wilfred Puddleston’s face.
‘I think this is our lucky day!’
Chapter 3
Where you will hear about how Yuri steps in dog poo and at least one miracle happens
The other worrying thing that happened that evening was more extraordinarily worrying than the fact that the W Crew was at the Dog Field.
But absolutely no human in Bumblewood noticed.
Not Suzanne or Yuri either. Nor the W Crew. At that precise moment, what Suzanne did notice, however, was Wilfred. ‘No!’
A second later, Yuri spotted them too.
He looked up for a split second. That was all it took.
SPLAT!
‘Oh no! Dog poo!’
A dark laughter echoed across the Dog Field.
The W Crew approached Yuri slowly.
‘Ugh! You stink, Yuri,’ laughed Wilfred.
Yuri quickly considered his options. He decided he had two choices:
1) scrape the poo off his shoe on the grass – insanely quickly, or 2) dash away like a madman
