Cappelen Damm is Norway’s largest publishing house, publishing approximately 1000 titles a year, within the genres of fiction, non-fiction, educational books and children’s books. Cappelen Damm is owned jointly by Bonnier and Egmont.
Cappelen Damm Agency represents the rights of all of the authors in this catalogue. This includes titles from Flamme Forlag, an imprint of Cappelen Damm AS. It is an Oslo-based small press devoted to experimental fiction in all categories. Their list boasts a new, bold generation of Norwegian writers.
The Agency is responsible for all foreign book rights, as well as rights for TV, film, radio, anthologies, electronic media, etc. We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the authors and the sales of foreign rights.

KARSTEN NEEDS AN EYE-PATCH
A new book about best friends Karsten and Petra!
When Karsten goes to the eye-doctor he is told that he has to wear a patch over one eye for a while. Karsten doesn't like this. Back in the nursery, Karsten is playing with Petra and the other children. Although he is playing, Karsten is unhappy. Eventually, it is big sister Siri who gets Karsten to feel happier about wearing a patch – it's good to have help if part of your body isn't working properly. Even Harry Potter uses specs!

PETRA PLAYS FOOTBALL
A new book about best friends Karsten and Petra!
Petra loves football. And she often sits glued to the screen when there is football on TV. She loves playing football in the garden with Grandpa and Esther. When the local sports club announce that they are going to start football for six-year-olds, Petra really wants to take part.
She goes to training, and they learn so much! They learn to head the ball, to run together after the ball and to run with the ball through an obstacle course. They are split into two teams and play against each other, and they learn about fair play.
Tor Åge Bringsværd (1939–) has received many awards, as a writer and as a playwright. His works have been translated into 23 languages and his theatrical works have been staged in twelve countries. Bringsværd writes for all ages.
Anne G. Holt (1961–) graduated from Westerdal’s Advertising School and the Oslo National Academy of Art. She has worked as an illustrator since 1986. She has illustrated the popular Karsten and Petra books since they were introduced in 1992.

THE SHORTCUT
It's Grandad's turn to take Maya to nursery today. Maya knows the way. ‘First this way and then that way,’ she says, pointing the route. ’That's fine,’ says Grandad, smiling. He has gone to the nursery with Maya before. He'll find the way alright!

Snarveien is a charming picture-book about an everyday activity which can be really exciting and fun!
Ingeborg Eliassen (1953–) is from the County of Nordland in Northern Norway. She published her first children's book in 1979. Since then she has written plays, poems, song lyrics and monologues which have been enthusiastically received by both critics and audiences.
Åshild Irgens (1976–) graduated from Oslo National Academy of the Arts and is an award-winning illustrator of several children's books. Her works have been bought by the National Library.

Godtegrisen is a lavishly imaginative picture-book about a close friendship outside the pigsty. This is Line Halsnes' second picturebook, which she has both written and illustrated herself.
Line Halsnes (1981–) trained in illustration at the Norwich School of Art and Design. She is a partner in the working collective Kobolt Design. Båten mellom stjernene was her first picture book.
THE PILLOW WAR
Ida has a pillow, the best pillow in the world. She can cuddle and squeeze it. Her mother thinks it's high time it was washed, but Ida isn't going to give up her pillow so easily. So it's time for a pillow war, and anything might happen.
Putekrig is a humorous, hilarious and intimate picture-book. A book for everybody who has a beloved pillow, teddy-bear or cuddly cloth and has experienced the trauma of a parent threatening to wash it.

Robinhound has a much older brother who takes him to nursery, but Robinhound doesn't understand why he has to go to nursery every day. ‘They're all stupid,’ he says. Then everything goes a bit wrong for Robinhound. He tries to pour his own milk, but spills it over the table. He kicks his ball into the air, but predictably, Uffle is standing in the way when the ball comes down again. Everyone scolds him and no one understands that it wasn't his fault.
Robinhound decides to hide. ‘They'll never find me,’ he thinks, ‘I can stay here all night if I have to.’ At least he has a much older brother who understands everything.
This is a great everyday story with both humour and gravity. The story describes Robinhound's perception of reality without any interjectory adult reason or correction. This is a book in which all children will recognise themselves.

DAGBLADET
Alice Bjerknes Lima de Faria (1968–) is a Norwegian-Swedish scenographer and illustrator. She graduated from Gothenburg School of Design and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and holds a Master of Fine Art degree in Scenography. She began her work as a freelance illustrator in 2005, producing book covers and work for a range of magazines and journals.
SOON YOU’LL SLEEP
A YEAR'S GOODNIGHTS

The books about Snefrid is about a kind lady who becomes invisible when she eats celery. She lives in a big house and has a big heart. In the books about Snefrid we also meet the pop-star, the princess, the ghost, the elf, the neighbour, the cook and other wonderful characters who live with her.
In the second book of the series, the ghost is frightfully unhappy because it doesn't manage to scare anyone. That is when Snefrid takes a bite of celery and becomes invisible, so that she can help the ghost without the ghost knowing!
Ingunn Aamodt (1965–) has a background as an art teacher, but has worked full-time as a writer since 1998. Since her debut she has published many children's books.
Anna Fiske (1964–) studied graphic design and illustration at Konstfackskolan in Stockholm. Since 1992, she has worked as an author and illustrator of comic books and children's picture books.
THE BEES OF NEW YORK
Max lives on the 20th floor in the building which includes the Waldorf Astoria where his dad is head chef. They have an enchanting garden on the roof with masses of fine plants and bee-hives.
The hotel manager is angry and dissatisfied with the menu and demands some magic; otherwise he will throw both Dad and Max out. Max doesn't want to leave his lovely paradise. Can he discover something magic with the help of the bees' honey?
Biene i New York is about loyalty, belonging and bees. The exciting and busy city is breathtakingly illustrated.

THE WAFFLEFISH
Fox and Piglet have borrowed a book about fish, with pictures of all sorts of fish and sea creatures. Some of the fish look very funny, for example the Gurglefish. Others look very nasty to eat, such as the Potatomouth, which is U.N.O.P – Unusually Nasty On Pizza. But there are also some which look remarkably good, and most tempting of all is the Wafflefish. Piglet fancies a wafflefish for dinner. So the two friends go on a fishing trip – but there may be more than wafflefish lurking in the deep.
Vaffelfisken is the twelfth book about Fox and Piglet. Here again Rørvik and Dybvig are in top form, as they have been right from their very first book, twenty years ago.

Per Dybvig (1964–) is an illustrator and one of our foremost children’s book artists. He has received many awards for his drawings and his work has been featured in solo exhibitions. In 2005 he and Bjørn Rørvik were co-recipients of the Ministry for Culture and Church Affairs’ Literary Award for their Fox and Piglet books.
HELLO, SEA!
Finally there is a new Hallo-book from Anna Fiske! This time we're going underwater. For an entire year we follow life under the sea, where more goes on than you would ever believe! Here we meet mermaids skipping, seahorses whinnying and a skate with a far-out hairdo. We also find the remains of sunken pirate ships and the ruins of old temples. ‘Where are you, Mummy?’ asks the main character in Xueting Yang's elegant and gripping picture-book debut. Gjemsel is about playing hide-and-seek, but the subtext is a story of loss and of working through grief.
Through the game we see a child's fumbling attempt to understand and talk about a major loss, and a father's equally fumbling attempts to support the child.
Xueting Yang came from China to Norway as an art student, and quickly made her mark by winning the Culture Department's Prize for cartoon series. Her poetic language and characteristic illustrations are distinguishing her as a new voice in the picturebook genre.
Xueting Yang (1988–) is a Chinese cartoonist and illustrator. She enrolled at Oslo Art College in 2011, and made her publishing debut in 2014 with the cartoon series book Et annet sted (‘Another Place’), expressing in pictures the experience of moving to Norway. Yang takes inspiration both from classical Chinese illustration and from Western traditions. Et annet sted won the Culture Department’s Cartoon Series Prize and was awarded silver in The Year’s Most Beautiful Book.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STORY
Vera is out running by night. She wants to meet her little brother again. For that, she needs help from Syl. Vera runs fast, with her hair streaming out behind her. Quickly, quickly, down to the pond, down to Syl. Syl, who tells Vera the best stories. Syl, who brings little brother to life.
Den finaste historia is both heavy and light, abstract and concrete, painful and moving. Together, Torseter and Tjønn have created a quite unique picture-book.
Brynjulf Jung Tjønn (1980–) made his literay début with the novel Eg kom for å elske in 2002. I morgen skal vi sitte i solen (2009) was his début as a children's book author, and was sold the Faroe Islands. His young adult novel from 2013, Så vakker du er, won the Brage Prize.
Øyvind Torseter (1972–) is a well known illustrator and author who has produced books such as Avstikkere, Hullet and Mulegutten. He has won a number of Norwegian and international prizes. For Avstikkere he was awarded the Year’s Most Beautiful Book Prize and the most distinguished honour for children’s books, The Bologna Ragazzi Award. Hullet earned him the prestigious French Prix Jeune Alber, and was also nominated for The Year’s Most Beautiful Book.

Veronika Erstad (1979 – ) has taken part in creative writing courses in Bø and in Tromsø. She made her debut in 2015 with the poetry collection Eg er så nær morgonen eg kan kome.
Bo Gaustad (1946–) is a noted illustrator of children's books.
TROLLE AND THE MAGIC FIDDLE
Trolle is teased and bothered by the other trolls, but one day he comes across the King of the Fairies' violin, which is lying sparkling in a forest clearing. He realises that the instrument is magic – anyone who hears it falls into the power of the fiddler. Now Trolle is not only accepted, but worshipped! But one night the troll flock escape from his spell. Trolle is back where he started, lonelier than ever.
Luckily, Alva appears. She tries to get Trolle to understand that he can never be happy as long as he has the fiddle. At the same time, they have to keep their friendship secret, because in Alva's village everybody wants to destroy the trolls. As if that were not enough: The Fairy King is out looking for his fiddle and will do anything to get it back.

Alexander Rybak (1986 -) is an actor, composer and musician. He has been playing violin and piano since the age of five. His international break-through came when he won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 with the song ‘Fairytale’ which he had composed himself. VÅRT LAND
Angelina won Norway’s got talent 2014 with her beautiful Billie Holliday voice, and she went viral with her songs. She has millions of hits on YouTube and is huge in the US and Germany. Her first cd is on the way in the US by PRMD; the same music label as Avicii. When Angelina goes on stage to sing, she is always barefooted. The book explains why.

Tiril Valeur Holter-Andersen (1975–) trained at the National Academy of the Arts, where she specialized in visual communication. She has designed and drawn many covers for books and CDs and exhibited her work on several occasions.

The king has sent six of his seven sons out into the world to find suitable princesses. They do not return, and Mule Boy insists on finding out what happened to them. He discovers that the troll has turned them and their brides into stone. He enters the mountain to find the troll and free the princess that the troll has captured.
This is a funny twist on an old folk tale. There is a lot of humour and funny lines in the book. It is impressive and exciting to enter the mountain together with Mule Boy, and the princess is both tough and charismatic. We also know Mule Boy from previous books.
The illustrations are beautiful, funny and fanciful both in terms of line and use of colour.

Gro Dahle (1962–) writes for both children and adults. As a children's book writer she is known for her poetic books on themes that are often given little attention. Her poetry collections Regnværsgåter and Hundre tusen timer have solid places in the canon of modern Norwegian poetry. She has also published novels and short stories.

Lars Saabye Christensen (1953–) made his literary début in 1976 with Historien om Gly. His break-through novel was Beatles, which is one of the greatest literary successes in Norway and which continues to speak to new generations. There is a legal case going on in Elverum where several people are accused of taking part in illegal wolf-hunting. The bitter conflict between the defenders and the opponents of wolves, which has been going on since the seventies, is one of the themes of this book, which will be the last in this series and which moves us on to more recent times. We follow the same families, as some move back out from the city to try to make themselves a new life in the woods, while others turn their backs on Finnskogen for good.

Olav Starheimsæter's debut novel has a rather unusual focal point, namely The Palace of Lust – an internet forum for people who want to meet others to have sex in different ways, according to their desires. Naturally, such a forum regularly gives rise to various ethical considerations. This could have become tendentious, but it is not so. For Starheimsæter the sex forum is just that, a sex forum. What interests him is the variety of people who are drawn into it. We meet them in critical situations where they have to make tough decisions to survive. What is common to them all is that they are searching for the boundaries of who they are, either to expand them or to see if they can be found at all.
Olav Starheimsæter (1980–) grew up in Bergen and Sykkylven and now lives in Oslo. He trained as a script-writer. Lystslott is his first book.

In Broren til Hugo we follow the story of Errki, his slightly older brother Hugo and their parents. Dad was one of the Norwegians who fought alongside the Nazis on the Eastern Front, and who still adheres to Nazi principles. Mother is an impoverished Finn who fell in love with this big bear of a man. They fight and swear, drink and lie. We follow the story through Errki's eyes as he grows up in this environment.
The novel deals with the young boys' developing amorous attraction towards other young boys, and the difficulties they face growing up homosexual with parents such as these.
The novel is set in 1950's Nordland with its yoke of fishing, drinking and poverty. Per Knutsen is a master of writing warmly about painful things. A fine, strong book.

Hilde Lindset is a name to watch. She has already published two powerful anthologies of short stories, and in this year's book, Til døden, she demonstrates a wide literary range. Autobiographical and surreal elements interact when Kristian Hæggernes writes about finding an abandoned infant outside his door, a boy who seems to grow several years older every night. The two of them live closely together throughout a week which is both usual and highly unusual. This impossible person, who perhaps is called Stig, stimulates reflections about possible pasts, presents and futures for his involuntary father-figure.

On Saturday 26th June 1943, Hitler granted one of his rare audiences to a writer, the Norwegian Knut Hamsun, then generally hailed as the greatest living writer of the Germanic peoples, a contemporary Goethe. The meeting started jovially, but ended in disaster. While Hamsun insisted on his loyalty to the Führer, he also spoke out against him, interrupting a man who was not used to being interrupted. A furious Hitler ended the conversation after 45 minutes – and Hamsun and his entourage left in disappointment.
This is the first time this spectacular event in Norwegian and European cultural history has been used as the basis for an entire book. Knut Hamsun – Reisen til Hitler explores the trappings of literary genius and authority, as well as the uses of culture in Nazi Germany.
The book's main narrative, the seven-day journey to and from the meeting, ends with an epilogue which includes Hamsun's obituary for Hitler, published on 7th May 1945.
After a teaser which takes the reader straight into the journey, the book – in order to establish the premises of what took place –considers a few episodes from Hamsun's life up until 1943. These include his attempt at doing away with the father figure Ibsen, his Nobel Prize and rise to fame, how he became the favourite of the German far right, his interventions on behalf of Nazi Germany during the war, his antisemitism and allegiance to the idea of the Germanic peoples, as well as Goebbels' glowing reception of his favourite writer in May 1943. A month later Knut Hamsun sets off to Vienna as the star attraction of a big nazi propaganda show, a congress of nazi journalists. It is after having been celebrated as a great success in the second capital of the Reich, that Hamsun is flown on to Berghof, Hitler's mountain residence in Southern Bavaria.

Whole towns were emptied, and 1.6 million people were forced to flee. Greeks and Turks still feel the trauma, and some of those who were directly affected are still alive.
