WILLS AND TESTAMENTS

NORWEGIAN BOOKSELLER'S AWARD

Vigdis Hjorth's new novel starts as a classic story of inheritance, centred around two summer cabins on Hvaler.

Two children have been looking after the place and their parents for many years. They are due to inherit the cabins. But there are two other children, who have partly broken away from the family. How do they fit into the inheritance dispute?

During the inheritance discussions another story emerges which brings violent forces into play. It's all about family history.

Wills and Testaments is very powerful and interesting – by far the most talked about and debated Norwegian novel of 2016.

Nominated to:

• Critics Award 2016

• Young Critics Award

Vigdis Hjorth (1959–) has made an exciting literary career and has written many popular books for both children and adults. Today she is an awardwinning author and one of Norway's most interesting contemporary writers.

‘Only Vigdis Hjorth is able to handle a serious topic in such a strong, intelligent and poetic way.’

DAGBLADET

‘Vigdis Hjorth has written her best novel; about a sexual assault that destroys all the relationships in a family … Vigdis Hjorth writes about the conflicts that build up in an authentic, everyday language – but something quivers between the lines. There is an energy, a level of suspense in the story that only exists when something is really at stake.’

ADRESSEAVISEN

‘The way Vigdis Hjorth writes takes us straight into the lives and life choices that most people recognize around us and within us.’

VG

‘Vigdis Hjorth's new novel is furious and wise, trembling and stringent.’

NRK

‘Hjorth dispenses secrets with Ibsen-like precision, so that the level of suspense is maintained up to the very last of the 343 pages.’

AFTENPOSTEN

‘Vigdis Hjorth's new novel, about heritage and the guilt in all words' meanings, is abhorrent. But good … Wills and Testaments is a hopeless book about a desperate yearning for justice. Definitely interesting, extremely wellwritten, and with well-portioned suspense. But dark, without the humorous oblique glance that tends to be Hjorth's trademark.’

MAGNET

WINNER OF THE BRAGE PRIZE 2015

For nearly three years, every single day, Lars Saabye Christensen wrote this novel. It will stand as a major work in his authorship. Beatles was his great youth work, The Half-Brother the middle-aged man's masterpiece. Magnet is the aging author's masterpiece. In this work, he has invested everything he has, and at the same time – and this is the most impressive – it may seem that he has done something completely new.

Magnet is a love story. It is about a mismatched couple who try to pull in the same direction with all their might.

‘There is something very unusual about being one of our most popular authors and being highly ranked in international literature at the same time. That is the status of Lars Saabye Christensen and his writing.’

TØNSBERGS BLAD

‘I rarely read a long novel which is so full of mature wisdom and beautiful language and Magnet at the same time manages to surprise the reader with unexpected turns.’

BERGENS TIDENDE

‘Well prepared, well composed, well written, well presented. Enjoy! …Magnet is securely on a level with Beatles and The Half Brother.’

VG

‘A master wordsmith is at work here.’ P2

Lars Saabye Christensen (1953–) has published a number of novels, poetry and short story collections since his literary debut in 1976 with The story of Gly. His breakthrough came with Beatles (1984), one of the greatest literary sales successes in Norway that, over the years, new generations continue to hold close to their hearts. The author received the Nordic Council Literature Prize for The Half Brother (2001).

He has also received the Riverton Prize, the Critics' Prize, the Brage Prize, the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize, the Dobloug Prize and the Norwegian Reader's Prize. His books are published in 36 countries.

GENUINE JOYS

Two of our greatest artists have created their first book together, an exceptionally beautiful book for adults about the joy of small glimpses.

‘We have laid bare private life, abandoned our inhibitions and vacuumed every corner to find as many joys as possible. We have succeeded. It is important for us to emphasise that these joys are not ironic; as the title says, they are genuine.’

‘Lars Saabye Christensen and Stian Holes picturebook for grown ups is a Genuine Joy.’

DE NYE REGLENE

In The New Rules Lars Saabye Christensen follows up Kargo with precise poems about the world.

THE INVISIBLE

Again, Roy Jacobsen has written a novel about an unlikely heroine, and he does it better than ever before. The Invisible is a monument over human courage and life-saving practical and social knowledge.

The novel is set in the first half of the 20th Century on an island on the North-Western coast of Norway. The island is small, there is only space for the Barrøy family. Life on the island is difficult. The Barrøy family is poor, but certainly not without guts and skills. They live off of their small land, they have some livestock, they fish in the sea and make use of whatever the waves wash ashore.

Jacobsen’s descriptions of man and nature are breathtaking. There is plenty of light here, even humor. The family’s daily work is a balancing act between refining the riches that wild nature so generously offers, and surviving in the very same wild nature that takes lives. The family’s love for their environment is brilliantly communicated. A life somewhere else is unthinkable to them.

The Invisible is inspired by real people, who Jacobsen knew in his childhood. It is a family saga, and a coming-of-age story about Ingrid. It can also be labeled a Robinsonade.

‘This is a terrific novel. The level of precision is joyous, the language poetic. Roy Jacobsen stays in top form. He has the observational skills and the abilities to tell the truth about the human being. The result is great art.’

VÅRT LAND

‘…Roy Jacobsen at his very best … The Invisible is simply a fantastic novel.’

DAGBLADET

‘… with a great vision and wisdom Jacobsen rolls out an unsheltered drama on barren land.’

ADRESSEAVISEN

WHITE OCEAN

This is the sequel to the successful novel The Invisible. White Ocean is a dramatic love story from the small island Barrøy in the year 1944–45. Ingrid thinks she is alone on the island and still end up experiencing an unusual love affair in the course of several intense winter weeks.

Roy Jacobsen gives us a welcome reunion with the people of Barrøy. This time he unrolls an even bigger canvas as he delivers a powerful and eventful novel about a fateful year in Norwegian history.

‘Once again, Roy Jacobsen is outstanding as a very talented author with a modest, compelling style.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

‘All I can say about this book is that it is fantastic. Gripping.’

FÆDRELANDSVENNEN

‘In White Ocean, life is portrayed both beautifully and brutally.’

BERGENS TIDENDE

‘The novel is securely composed by a novelist who uses wonderfully beautiful language put together with poetic skill.’

VG

‘White Ocean develops as a magnificent story, elegant and sharp, lingering long in the reader's imagination.’

DAGSAVISEN

Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary debut in 1982, with the short story collection Fangeliv, evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions. He is a wonderful storyteller with obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literary Award: for The Conquerors in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also short-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles

His books are published in 29 countries.

YOU CAME FROM LIGHT

We meet a girl living with foster parents. She doesn't understand why her mother didn't want her. In her adulthood, she starts looking for answers to her questions, both in order to understand her own outsider status, and to give her own daughter a beginning.

This is a strong novel about how loss can open up for other possibilities, other adventures. But perhaps you shouldn't find the answers to everything? Do you lose something if you aren't longing for something?

‘A great storyteller that deserves a great audience.’ DAGSAVISEN

‘Tender and beautiful about rootlessness.’ FÆDRELANDSVENNEN

Britt Karin Larsen (1945–) has written poetry, books for children, documentary books and novels. Her first published work was a 1978 collection of poetry. She is renowned for her Gypsy trilogy, and her historic novels about the life of people in the wooded area of Finnskogen in Norway.

HER LYING FACE

In Kristiania in April 1897, the newspapers Morgenbladet and Verdens Gang announced that Knut Hamsun had reported Mrs. Anna Munch to the police and asked that her mental state be investigated. That spring, several anonymous letters slandering Hamsun had appeared in Kristiania.

Hamsun was convinced that the letters had been written by the authoress Anna Munch, a woman he had first met during his lecture tour in 1891.

To put it mildly, Anna Munch was entranced by Knut Hamsun. She began to follow him, even to Paris, and on several occasions she booked in to the same lodgings as he had. She constantly sent him letters, to which she eventually received no replies. In other words, she was a good old-fashioned 'stalker.'

This epistolary mystery was the starting point for Selma Lønning Aarø's artistic novel, which brings a forgotten author to life and, not least, says something about the major struggle female authors of the time had to be seen and heard.

‘Selma Lønning Aarø's latest novel has the potential to reach a vast audience and it will leave them shaken, moved and enlightened.’

DAGBLADET

‘Selma Lønning Aarø really knows how to wield a story. Here Anna Munch emerges from oblivion in a manner that can only be described as spellbinding … beautifully written and skilfully composed.’

VG

‘There is a lot to like about this novel. It is well told and excellently documented.’

THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

Doppler is back. After years deep in the woods, Doppler remembers that he has a family. He puts Bongo, the moose, into a kennel for deer and makes his way into Oslo.

He is looking forward to seeing his wife and children, but his old house looks strange. On the name label on the mailbox, his name has been crossed out and a new one put in its place: EGIL HEGEL.

Doppler thinks he has reached rock bottom, but his troubles have only just begun.

PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Erlend Loe (1969–) is one of Norway's bestselling authors. His work have been published in thirty-nine countries so far. He made his literary debut with Captured by the Woman in 1993. NRK

‘The satire of the last two books is in many ways as before, but the cut seems darker, more rebellious and sharper. Thus Loe becomes even more recklessly funny …’

MORGENBLADET

‘And the observations are good. Sharp. The themes Erlend Loe lets him reflect upon are definitely contemporary. A book for our time.’

TO THE WESTERN ICE

At the start of the seal-hunting season a sailboat leaves the quay at Tromsø. On board is a young, newly qualified vet on her first tour of inspection for The Fisheries Department. She is alone with a crew of seal-catchers and hunters, and will be with them in the icy wilderness around Greenland for six weeks.

The narration in To The Western Ice is vigorous on every page, consistent in style, shocking and uncompromising in content.

Full English translation available.

THE AUTHOR SAYS:

‘The novel reads as a psychological chamber play; with an intense, grinding, claustrophobic feel to it. Some readers and critics have pointed to how it lends from the thriller-genre, and there is really no need to argue with that, but there is a case to be made that this is a poetic thriller, in the sense that the never changing ice, the ever present light is as fundamental to the story as the characters in it.’

Tor Even Svanes (1978-) has a Ph.D in Media Studies. He made his debut as an author in 2006 with The Second Son Hotel Eldorado followed in 2011 and To The Western Ice is his third novel.

‘With the help of subdued language rich with association, and brief, vivid flashbacks to events out at sea in the arctic, the author builds the tension with a sure hand. First and foremost it is the intensity and spare prose that combine to distinguish this novel from others …’

VG

‘The book effectively draws the reader into the inspection of Norwegian seal hunting in Greenland. The claustrophobic opening is remarkably good … Rather than telling the story chronologically, Svanes creates a narrative that provides an uncomfortably clear impression of Mari's claustrophobia on board the ship.’

KLASSEKAMPEN

‘The particularly masculine combination of brutality and feline craftiness is skilfully and ruthlessly described. Combining this psychological warfare with the description of the ship and the sea, Svanes earns a place in the darkest corner of seafaring literature …’

DAGENS NÆRINGSLIV

‘What could have been artificial and affected is instead an organic text. And it all really rests on a simple premise: The author knows when to stop.’

AFTENPOSTEN

‘Svanes borrows techniques from thriller literature and creates an intense and concentrated psychological drama in the confines of the seal-hunting ship, where anything can happen at any time.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

‘… Svanes has written a really good novel. With skillful use of narrative technique and language and a tight grasp of the theme, he creates a literary space which almost steps forward to within touch of the reader …’

UNIVERSITAS

‘A stark presentation of seal-hunting on the Greenland ice – and of being a woman in a tough masculine environment … Svanes succeeds both in describing the coarse male milieu in its own terms and in tracing the female inspector's reactions with sensitive understanding …’

ALL THE LIGHT AND ALL THE DARK

The novel opens with a scene that seems like it was taken straight from a drama series. Hildegunn is having a child and calls on her mother Vibeke, who is mentally ill. It is clear that the daughter wishes to reconcile with something dramatic that happened in her childhood.

Following the meeting, Vibeke's thoughts take her back to her own childhood and adolescence in a village on the west coast of Norway. We go across from the dark and immediate, over to the distant and bright, and see her father working with saw and wood, the sawdust flying and all the good times along the way and afterwards.

So how does the journey transpire from something so seemingly idyllic to the difficult meeting between Hildegunn and Vibeke? What happened in the meantime? That's what Vibeke – and we, alongside her – is trying to find out. First slowly, and then with greater speed, we find ourselves moving towards the dramatic climax, when Vibeke behaves in such a way that she loses contact with her daughter.

Brynjulf Jung Tjønn (1980–) made his literary debut with the novel I Came to Love (2002). Tomorrow We Will Sit in the Sun (2009) was his debut as a children's book author. His young adult novel from 2013, How Beautiful You Are, won the Brage Prize. His books have been translated into several languages.

UNDER THE WINDOW

What to do when life gives you lemons? The main character in Under the Window is a middle-aged supermarket worker who is on sick leave. She insists on wearing a rather old-fashioned neckbrace although there are doubts she really needs one for medical reasons.

She also has family worries. Her daughter has moved in with an older lover before finishing high school. Her husband is more occupied with his sudden passion for bicycling than he is passionate about her and their marriage.

Following the doctor's advice, she starts a new routine of afternoon walks in the hope for a speedy recovery from her gloomy everyday life. In the course of her walks, she meets a man with a dog. They become friends and together they start spying at their neighbours during their evening strolls. Life suddenly gets much more interesting.

Under the Window is a heartfelt, loving story told with humour and soul.

IT WILL ALL BE DIFFERENT

It Will All Be Different is a wide-ranging epic novel in two parts. It is about two couples in an open relationship. We meet four more or less equal main characters who all make themselves heard in their own way.

This novel is something between a novel of ideas and a psychological study. It starts in the 1980's with a group of friends who find their salvation when they discover shared joy and musical solace within the context of the Pentecostal movement, which they are led to by the main character David's excessively ecstatic and paralysing meeting with The Saviour.

As an adult David experiences the same excess as an artist and through living in an open relationship where partner-swapping and sexual experimentation are important ingredients.

Eivind Buene brings out interesting social trends in this novel, which contains shades of both Philip Roth and Michel Houellebecq.

‘It Will All Be Different by Eivind Buene is a well written and original novel of ideas … This is good literature, free of moralism and clear answers. Searching and well written.’

VÅRT LAND

Eivind Buene (1973–) has been a composer in residence with orchestras and festivals in Norway and abroad. His music has been performed in prestigious venues like Centre Pompidou, Berlin Philharmonic Hall and Carnegie Hall. He made his literary debut in 2010 with the novel One Man Orchestra Singalong from 2012 is his second novel.

FAREWELL TO ALL THAT

This is the sequel to Sondre Midthun's critically-acclaimed debut novel Don't Ever Come Closer. The main character is living in secret in Malangen, where he grew up. Here, he stands face to face with his childhood memories, the village and not least himself.

Farewell to All That is an intense, clever, sad, but sometimes also surprisingly funny novel, full of human relationships and existential reflection.

THE LOFOTEN WALL

The narrator of this novel is sitting trapped in a job-seeking course through NAV, the Norwegian Labor and Welfare Administration. Among all the other job seekers, he lets his thoughts wander here and there in violent thrusts back and forth in time.

The Lofoten Wall is a fragmented, intense and meandering insider's tale from within Stig Aasvik's mind; events past and present are intertwined in one long stream of consciousness; his childhood, his mother's sudden and untimely death, travels to his father's hometown in Lofoten, family life, work, everyday events, events great and small, wounds great and small, difficult and painful experiences. Everything pours out, is turned inside out and enlarged.

This is an ambitious story, an inner struggle, a complex, musical, dark, dreamy and lyrical tale about being a human being – here and now.

‘He writes the way a meticulous and sensitive Knaugård might do, merciless but carefully and tender about his close ones. The text grows in a well-groomed and rich inner language.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

‘ The Lofoten Wall is sweet. The language is radiant. The transitions from thought to thought come naturally. Not for a moment do we miss an external narrative.’

THE END OF OUR FLAG

TARJEI VESAAS' DEBUT AWARD

In Rottenhof, brothers Adam and Florian are very much left to themselves in a small community where things aren't quite as they should be. They scout for robbers and jugosers in a barren landscape, and both look forward to and dread the impending war.

Since their mother spends all her time with their little sister and their father is Rottenhof's most important man, it becomes Adam's job to watch over and educate Florian. And Adam is a rather special educator. He shows Florian all the rituals that must be performed so that the robbers don't put them in their bags and take them with them, and he concocts gruesome ways to kill the Pröll-child.

Behind this veneer of childlike imagination, we are able to sense a society in ruins and a world constantly on the verge of war. It is also a story about how a small community is forced to react to abuse. And when the war ends and Florian gets sick, Adam's high ideals of bravery and love for the fatherland are broken down in the face of reality.

The End of Our Flag is an enjoyable, brutal and substantial story about the crises mankind can't avoid.

IT HAS TO BE DONE

Since her very powerful debut novel No One Shall Hear How Quiet It Is in 2010, Benedicte Meyer Kroneberg has been one of our most productive and critically acclaimed authors. She is often compared to Merethe Lindstrøm.

The central event which drives the plot in her new novel It Has To Be Done is a divorce.

Daniel, a photographer, take his two young daughters on a boat trip while he reflects on what really happened between him and his wife, Sonja. What drove her to end their marriage and their life together?

During the trip he decides to break the agreement he has made with his ex-wife, to only have the daughters at sea with him for one single day. He takes the children further out to sea to go camping on a remote island, even though he knows there is a storm coming, putting their lives in grave danger. To his astonishment, Daniel realizes that a part of him welcomes this. But how far is he willing to go, gambling with his children's lives in order to get his revenge?

In It Has To Be Done, Kroneberg continues her intensive investigation of families.

ABOUT NO ONE SHALL HEAR HOW QUIET IT IS:

‘Suggestive about mental health.’

VÅRT LAND

‘Kroneberg writes well, and I believe in her story.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

Benedicte Meyer Kroneberg (1972–) was born in Oslo. She graduated from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology with a degree in Nordic Literature. It Has to Be Done is her fifth novel.

THE WORLD PLAYS HIDE AND SEEK

Hanna is in her thirties. All she wants to do is to be an author and to start a family with her boyfriend, Morten. But Morten shows very little understanding for both her writing and for her wish of becoming a mother.

Then Hanna is served some devastating news: She has an eye sight condition, which will slowly turn her blind. On a trip to Iceland to take part in a half-marathon, she finally understands she needs to change her life.

During the race, instead of crossing the finish line, she runs off in the rural Icelandic landscape, and meets a man, Hallgrim. The choice between Morten and Hallgrim steadily becomes more acute as her eye sight continues to deteriorate.

The World Plays Hide and Seek is a novel about finding your own way.

‘Oh, how I recogniced myself in this story. Wanting to write, almost at any price, being so passionate about it, day and night. But the man you love thinks what you're doing is just nonsense … A painful and beautiful novel.’

Kvamme put the problems like a painful tip of literary reflections into the protagonist´s life, the sickness, the uncertainty … But the main characters disease is just one of several weighted strong elements in this novel, that has more than one narratives carrying the story. I would like to say lifting it, to an existentially wondering and interesting level.’

THE LAST DAYS

ENDETID

The main character in The Last Days is a priest. When his only daughter is raped and killed, at first he finds little comfort and help in the faith and the hope he has given to others.

When the perpetrator flees into hiding in his homeland, the father is provoked by the powerlessness and passivity of the police and the authorities. This eventually leads him to defy the lack of extradition agreements and to take it upon himself to punish the crime which has been committed to his daughter.

Ole Kristian Ellingsen (1952–) works as a writer for the advertising agency McCann. Vindicated from 2014 was his debut, and he has since published two more novels.

CARE

OMSORG

On February 17, 2015, the police are called to an assisted living facility about a suspicious death and a possible rape. More than a month and a half later, a recently graduated policewoman is brought on to the case. She starts interviewing residents, employees and others who might be able to shed light on what happened.

Slowly but surely, the conditions at the assisted living facility are revealed.

With an insightful, sharp, exciting and enjoyable debut, Kristin Buvik Sivertsen asks the question of what care means in our time.

Kristin Buvik Sivertsen (1986–) lives in Oslo. She has a Master's Degree in Literary Science from the University of Copenhagen. Care is her debut.

PELARGONIA

Pelargonia is a novel about the process of growing up rather than a narrative plot. It is a collection of texts and descriptions of a childhood in Norway at the beginning of the 1990s, which now and then opens connections to both youth and young adulthood.

The novel is mainly driven by the language. The descriptions are attentive and affectionate – of mother and father and of clouds, flowers, the light, wheat flour, plums and clothes pegs.

Everyday objects and events are described with sensitivity, and although the book can appear enigmatic and inaccessible, it is also open-hearted and communicative.

FROM PELARGONIA:

‘Still peace and tolerance prevails around me. I collect football cards in a jar, I brush my teeth twice a day, I experience something close to order. The wind stroking through the gardens loves me secretly, and sometimes I have to tighten my belt by two notches to keep from not disintegrating.’

CLEARING THE AIR

MYGGFANGERNE

Päivi, an artist, gets a telephone call from her mother to say that her father is on his deathbed. She hurriedly packs her bags and leaves to be with her father during his final days. The family meet in a hospital in North Finland in an attempt to clear the air and find reconciliation.

Laakso takes us through their last days together, with unmistakeable rawness and unsurpassed humour.

Päivi M. Laakso (1967–) is from Tornio in Finland but lives and works in Norway. She published her debut in 2001, the novel I Love Sun, and has since written two more novels. She is also a renowned artist, with several exhibitions in later years.

THE EYE CHART

SYNSTAVLE

The Eye Chart is the story of Silje, who started studying medicine but who now works in a café instead. Her father owns and manages an optometry practice, that he wants Silje to take over.

The story begins when her father dies and Silje and her boyfriend go home for the funeral. This is when Silje eventually discovers the twist in the story.

Her father had a sister, Silje's aunt, who was a doctor and who is deceased. What Silje doesn't know is that she took her own life after mismanaging a patient. Her father's motive for not wanting Silje to become a doctor begins to appear in another light.

A well written, complex and thought-provoking novel.

Benedicte Alexandra Lie (1971–) is a professor at the Medical Faculty of the University in Oslo. She studied creative writing in Tromsø. The Eye Chart is her debut.

EROTICA

What is Erotica? What do we actually mean when we say that something is “erotic”?

If we simply agree – in a servile way – to all that we are presented with in the media, these questions would seem easy to answer. Erotic images are around us all the time.

Inger Wold Lund chooses a different approach, however. Through a series of dialogues, most of them a page or two long, individual episodes unfold. And as they do, our preconceptions about the erotic are challenged or expanded upon in surprising ways.

Some of Lund's texts are decidedly sensual. Others are comical and even border on slapstick. Although Erotica is inspired by classics from the erotic canon, it is undoubtedly a singular work, with its own vision and scope. Throughout the collection, Lund displays a keen ear for language and an eye for how small events loom large in the most intimate of moments.

Erotica is also a book about experience and memory. Lund finds remnants of the past everywhere, in an abandoned house, in an old pair of pants or in fingermarks in the fog on a car window.

A red thread runs throughout Kjeldset's short stories. Whether it's the old lady going on a date, the children watching toads, or the middle-aged woman hiding in the basement on Halloween, they are all part of the same loose network that constitutes life.

AN EVEN GREATER LONELINESS

Finely tuned, intimate and surprising. Odd Klippenvåg doesn’t disappoint when he produces a collection of short stories.

The common theme of the stories is human relationships as they play out in closely defined situations: the sister visiting her brother whom she has not seen for a long time; the man ordering flowers and champagne before leaving the office; or the pensioner sitting down to listen to classical music in the title story.

The art of the short story at a high level.

Odd Klippenvåg (1951–) made his literary debut with the novel Night Picture in 1978. He has since published several novels and short story collections, some of which focus on homosexuality. He has also written a trilogy about the lives of classical composers. Klippenvåg is a critically acclaimed writer whose work is of a rare literary quality.

Mannakorn are small scraps of paper with passages from the Bible. These are placed in a bowl from which a scrap is taken, and this passage is taken as the basis for an interpretation. Often with humor and seriousness within a single text.

YOU DECIDE THAT THIS IS A MEMORY

Marianne Teie debuts with a poetic depth dive into part of Norway's history. Martinus Mathisen lived in Lillehammer a hundred years ago, and the poems in this collection depict his life. This is a life characterized by deprivation, grief and loss – but also by solidarity and closeness.

Much of what Martinus struggles with, is foreign to us. A hundred years ago, Norwegians had to face the death of children, tuberculosis, and a longing for America, the land where everything could be better.

Marianne Teie takes us into this foreign world, while at the same time, her poems also point out the similarities between all humans, regardless of time and space.

MAYBE IT HELPS POEMS

1998–2010

Nils-Øivind Haagensen is likely today's most popular poet of his generation in Norway. He is compared to the likes of Sweden's Göran Sonnevi, Chile's Pablo Neruda and America's Allen Ginsburg.

After two critically acclaimed collections, his authorship gained momentum with the first of what has since been called The Adress Books. For a while, he was a veritable word machine for newspapers and delivered texts that lay within – but also crossed the borders of – most genres.

When he gives readings, the venue is normally full to capacity. At Cappelen Damm, he published books such as Haruki and I, which was published in 2010. Maybe it helps assembles all the poetry Haagensen has published with Cappelen Damm from 1998 to 2010 – as well as a good deal of extra material from this period.

Thus, we get a thick and beautiful book of hundreds of pages, equipped with a foreword by Johan Harstad and an interview with the author.

If you wish to translate one of Norway's most important poets, you may want to start here, with Nils-Øivind Haagensen.

Nils-Øivind Haagensen (1971–) has worked as a journalist and has a degree in Comparative Literature. He is now Publishing Director of Flamme forlag. He made his literary debut in 1998 with the poetry collection Hands and rememberance, and has since written eight poetry collections, three novels and a travel book. VENETIAN WALKING STICK WITH AN ELEPHANT HEAD

The essay collection Venetian Walking Stick with An Elephant Head opens with an explanation of where the title comes from. Bringsværd describes a situation in which he is walking and is so absorbed in his own thoughts that he falls right down on his stomach and slips across the floor, slapstick-style. “Like a living bobsled”, he slid straight into the door of a Spanish restaurant so hard that blood flowed.

Later, he is telling the story to Jon Bing, who informs him that he must get a walking stick. And not just any walking stick – but a “Venetian walking stick with an elephant head”

TITLE

Fjällräven Yellow is a coming-of-age novel. We meet eighteen year old Sjur Tangen in the aftermath of a serious traffic accident in which a girlfriend died. His best friend, Frede, is still in hospital and has given Sjur the responsibility for delivering a yellow back-pack with secret contents to various places in Hakadal, where they live.

At home, his mother is arguing with her lover, and his little brother, Jesper, is having violent temper tantrums. Sjur has hardly any contact with his father, and now his dog, Houdini, has gone missing in the mountains. And all the time Sjur is thinking about a girl called Pjotr, and the things that happened last summer.

‘Tiril Broch Aakre is a remarkable storyteller. Fjällräven Yellow is a moving and somewhat brutal novel about a person on the brink of breaking.’

DAGBLADET

‘Tiril Broch Aakre has a sense for language that make her texts a necessity to read … Fjällräven Yellow feels both important and well composed.’

NRK

‘One association is the intense language of Per Petterson. Broch Aakre has given Sjur many of the same characteristics and angles that we find with Petterson's acting and observing men – people that only have a thin membrane between what they can convey, and on the other side: honesty, vulnerability and other depths.’

SAVE THE CHILDREN

WINNER OF THE YOUNG CRITICS AWARD 2015

Tanja has moved to Hakadal outside of Oslo with her husband and two children. Here she tries to build a home, make packed lunches, keep the driveway clear of snow, teach her children the difference between right and wrong – and put the past behind her. This proves more difficult than she initially imagined.

“Everything will fix itself overnight”, Tanja used to tell herself. She imagines falling asleep and that an ingenious clock is ticking inside her – securing, rerouting and reinstalling. But that is not how it works any more. At night the floodgates open. And suddenly she cannot get the days to connect.

With his debut novel Over the Bridge from 2013, Lasse W. Fosshaug showed that he masters the classic worker's novel. In his second book, Fosshaug takes the proletariat with him into the dystopia.

According to the Sea is a book about the little people in the big story. About the individual's role in space and time. The book reads as a thriller, with an innovative mix of worker's novel and dystopian sci-fi, and the reader is challenged to reflect on the role technology plays in our lives.

‘Lasse W. Fosshaug has written a novel that manages to entertain, and at the same time take its reader dead seriously.’

MORGENBLADET

‘Relevant Science Fiction has often been used to comment the present. Fosshaug does this, and he does it well … A novel that at its best almost erases the passage between fantasy and realism.’

While The Marketplace looked at the website finn. no, the action in Durnak's new novel takes place at the mall.

YOU'RE NOT GONNA DIE

Eva lives an apparently normal, recognisable and good life. As seen from the outside, there is no cause for concern. Then one day she has a panic attack on the bathroom floor.

You're Not Gonna Die is both a very small and an almost infinitely big novel – on how an often inexplicable and apparently needless anxiety can afflict us. It can make us avoid what we used to seek. We understand something basically horrible: that being ourselves does not happen automatically. We have to fight for it, usually while nobody is looking. But it is also a story of surviving the struggle, and of friends who don’t stop calling even though you never ring back.

‘… a hopeful book about anxiety.’

‘Maybe one could say that Strømsborg's authorship is moving in a more serious direction with this book, but there is still something unmistakably Strømsborgesque with this novel that portrays the circumstances of a no longer quite so young, anxious woman in an essentially questioning and wondering way, with a hint of misery, melancholy, a sense of lost time, life passing you by, while you’re sitting alone in an empty room, like Demi Moore in St. Elmos Fire, just being scared.’

You can’t go home again, said Tom Wolfe. Sure you can, says Linn Strømsborg, but only for a little while.

Furuset is a suburban novel. A post-study depression novel. A novel about growing up in reverse. About friends, music, getting lost and realising that you can’t simply get lost after all. About taking a step back before you might be able to take two forward.

This is the first book about Eva.

‘A moving and beautiful tale of adulthood that didn’t come when it was supposed to … Every decade, every place needs its young Werther, or its young Eva from Furuset.’ NRK

THE WHISPERER

Ragna Riegel works at Europris and lives alone in her childhood home. Her parents have died and her only son has moved to Berlin. They have no contact other than occasional Christmas and birthday cards.

Ragna lives within close confines. She likes her job because it is full of routine, she likes to sit on the same seat on the bus every day and she likes to buy the same things at the local shop each day. She must have order in her life. And she does, until one day she finds a letter in her mailbox with her name on the envelope and a clear threat written in block capitals on the sheet inside.

The letter reinforces a nightmare where Ragna Riegel's life is threatened by an unknown enemy and she realises that she must use all means possible to defend herself.

The novel takes the form of Konrad Sejer's interrogation of Ragna Riegel after the worst has happened; after it is too late.

A powerful narrative from one of the strongest voices in Norwegian crime literature.

Karin Fossum (1954–) made her literary debut in 1974 with the poetry collection Maybe Tomorrow, for which she won the Vesaas First Writer's Award. She has published books in several genres, but is perhaps best known for her crime fiction about Konrad Sejer. Several of her books have been filmed. A FIFTH SEASON

Ann, Victor, Helene and Nicolai are four young friends. They like trying things out, but their exploits don't always turn out well. One of the things they should not have done was to lock a classmate in the basement of a ruined riverside factory, where there had once been a nasty accident. Soon after, two of the four youngsters are found dead, and the third has disappeared.

A Fifth Season is a psychological thriller which brings the reader close to both victims and perpetrators. It is a crime novel where the reader has the opportunity to follow the investigation of abduction and murder. What happened? Who is guilty?

This is a thought-provoking novel which throws light on how events we cannot control intrude to turn everyday life upside-down. What happens to us and to our relationships with our loved ones? We meet young people driven by lethal forces they don't understand. We meet a father who will do everything to find his daughter. We meet some of the faces of evil.

Torkil Damhaug (1958–) has a degree in medicine with a specialization in psychiatry. His debut novel, Flee, moon caused a great stir when it appeared in 1996. His Norwegian and international breakthrough came with the psychological thriller Death by water from 2009. The novel is optioned for a movie. For the novel Fireraiser, Damhaug was awarded the prestigious Riverton Prize for best crime fiction novel in 2011.

‘Damhaug is a fantastic story-teller, who painstakingly unravels his well-composed narrative. Through dialogue, shifts in perspective and a broad spectrum of minor figures, his characters are depicted as a consequence of suppression, conflict and failure.’

DAGBLADET

‘Damhaug successfully maintains suspense for more than 600 pages.’

FRI FAGBEVEGELSE

‘A Fifth Season is a marvellous existential thriller, a nerve-wracking drama to be ranked among the best of Norwegian and international crime.’

DAGENS NÆRINGSLIV

‘Torkil Damhaug is the true magician of Norwegian crime writers. A Fifth Season shows him at his very best … A stylistically consistent, psychological crime novel, and in the genre in which Damhaug can be considered in a class of his own here in Norway.’

THE TRACK CHANGE MURDER

A 17 year old skier is found shot on the track during the last lap of a relay race at Holmenkollen. The incident happened in open ground, but without any witnesses. Detective Officer Kolbjørn “K2” Kristiansen has a worrying new case to investigate.

The more K2 digs beneath the apparently undramatic surface of the murdered girl's life, the more dramatic events he discovers. The victim was adopted and lived alone with her adoptive mother in a rather chilled and icy atmosphere. Ingeborg didn't like her mother's new lover. She was also searching intensely for the truth about her own origins and had just found out who her biological father was.

The Track Change Murder is a thought provoking family history of a child adopted in 1970s Norway, and a new classic crime mystery in the series featuring K2 and Patricia.

Hans Olav Lahlum (1973–) is a historian. He made his literary debut with the critically acclaimed biography Oscar Torp in 2007. He has since published several crime fiction novels and non-fiction books. His crime fiction novels have become bestsellers in Norway, and are available in Danish, English, Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, Danish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Russian, Slovakian and Korean.

‘The Track Change Murder is his best crime novel so far. Even those who do not like crime will enjoy reading this one.’

TVEDESTRANDPOSTEN

‘This crime novel is a joy to read! This is definitely Hans Olav Lahlum´s most ambitious and best crime novel to date, full of clues going off in all directions and all coming together in an impressive manner.’

LO-AKTUELT

‘The Track Change Murder is not only intelligent – it is crime magic that is truly fascinating.’

GJENGANGEREN

‘… clocks in the finish of his best K2-novel so far.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

‘A crime mystery starting off as one of Lahlum´s most intense and best … The story Lahlum has concocted is more complex and has more genuine human pain than his previous novels. In it we find the political lines from the eastern front to Argentina, homosexual love, rivalry between siblings and people who work together, individuals searching for identity and meaning and prejudice in a society divided by class. Lahlum cleverly plays out the same problems in different times, and he has a few aces up his sleeve.’

DIVING FOR SEAHORSES

A BOOK ABOUT MEMORY

Take a plunge into the science of memory, together with sisters Hilde and Ylva Østby, in Diving for Sea-horses

The writers explore the many facets of memory and how it influences our lives, both from a neuroscience perspective and through conversations with some of the most influential memory researchers of our time. They meet people with a special kind of memory – at both ends of the memory spectrum from mnemonists, actors and taxi drivers, to amnesiacs – and discover that most memories are transformed and some are best forgotten. In the middle of winter, they send divers deep into the Oslo fjord in search of where our memories are stored. They wonder if what lies at the heart of memory is what will change our future.

Diving for Sea-horses explains memory through personal and vivid tale telling, combining the best of two craftsmanships: Hilde is a novelist, and Ylva is a neuropsychologist.

THE HISTORY OF IMMORTALITY

“Do you really want to live forever?” With this immortal lyric from the 1980's as his soundtrack, religious historian Dag Øistein Endsjø goes in search of eternal life.

The dream of immortality is possibly as old as humanity itself. One of the few things we all have in common, is the knowledge that we all shall die. The alternative appears as simple as it is unachievable. Is it possible to stop our bodies from changing and to preserve them forever? What would happen if time lost its power over us? What really distinguishes Jesus' resurrection from the zombies who waken to life in The Walking Dead?

The history of immortality will not give you the prescription for eternal life. Nor does it contain any irrefutable evidence that immortality is possible. What it does offer, however, is a wideranging, informative and entertaining account of humanity's engagement with life's most central question: What happens to us when we die, and what might we be able to do to avoid it?

Dag Øistein Endsjø's book Sex & Religion (2009) was sold to eleven countries.

Dag Øistein Endsjø (1968–) is Professor of Religious Studies at The University of Bergen. He researches religious topics, writes, takes part in social debate, and is an activist for human rights.

C – CARBON

AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY

There are good reasons for writing this book with the simple title of C, which is the first and unauthorised biography of carbon, life's central element.

Most of the life processes within and around us involve carbon in one form or another. Carbon in pure form can be both graphite in a pencil, and diamond. It is also the starting point for most of the synthetic materials which pervade modern life. However, the essence of Dag O. Hessen's story is the lifecycle of carbon, the important balance between photosynthesis and cellular respiration, between building and burning.

This book gives us the basis we need for that understanding. It is an informal, well-informed book written with strong personal commitment by one of Norway's best presenters of research and science.

‘Hessen's compelling contribution to knowledge will probably be decisive, inspiring increased responsibility.’

BIOLOG

‘The literary technique is distinctly original … Dag O. Hessen succeeds in creating a piece of accessible literature on the border between science and politics.’

KLASSEKAMPEN

Dag O. Hessen (1956–) is a Professor of Biology at the University of Oslo. He has written many scientific works on themes like ecology and evolution. He has also published ten popular science books about evolution, biology and the environment. His work is found at the crossroads of biology and philosophy. He has received several awards for his promotion of popular science, among them the Riksmålsprisen in 2008.

The adventurous journey takes him through twelve countries and twenty-two cities, stretching a distance of 4,700 miles and including crossing the Caspian Sea.

Torbjørn Færøvik is the only writer who has been awarded the Brage Prize three times. As an author he is known to be knowledgeable, open and curious – and humoristic. In this, his 10th book, he gives us a rich gallery of people and destinies, culture, tradition and drama throughout history.

"Samarkand was the natural place to end the journey", says the writer. "The pearl of the Silk Road, the goal of all dreamers."

Close the doors, take a seat. Come on a journey you will never forget!

‘Copious and interesting book from Norway's most successful travel writer.’

COMING HOME

TALES FROM TURKEY AND GREECE

In a never-ending, staggering march the Christian population of Eastern Thrace is jamming the roads towards Macedonia. Twenty miles of carts drawn by cows, bullocks and muddy-flanked water buffalo, with exhausted men, women and children, blankets over their heads, walking blindly along in the rain beside their worldly goods. It is a silent procession. Nobody even grunts. All they can do is keep moving.

This quotation from Ernest Hemingway is a description of events in the border zone between Turkey and Greece in September 1922. Stian Bromark's book explores the consequences of the forced migration of populations between the two countries, which Fridtjof Nansen supported.

Bromark travels through Greece and Turkey, visiting historic cities such as Istanbul, Athens, Izmir and Thessalonika.

This is a travel book combined with a historic review of the Greek-Turkish conflict.

‘In Coming Home Bromark demonstrates clearly how meaningless it is to press people and societies into a single mould and a single identity … This historical documentary is written in first class prose.’

STAVANGER AFTENBLAD

‘…When he is at his best, Bromark knocks the ash off the words with a knack reminiscent of Hemingway … With its topics of refugee streams and nationalism, Coming Home is topical, important and worth reading.’

DAGBLADET

Stian Bromark (1972–) is managing editor of the magazine, Agenda. He has got wide experience as a reporter, commentator, book reviewer and debate and comment editor. He has written seven non-fiction books.

KNUT HAMSUN

THE JOURNEY TO HITLER

WINNER OF THE CRITICS AWARD FOR BEST NONFICTION 2014

On Saturday 26th June 1943, Hitler granted one of his rare audiences to a writer, the Norwegian Knut Hamsun, then generally hailed as the greatest living writer of the Germanic peoples, a contemporary Goethe. The meeting started jovially, but ended in disaster. While Hamsun insisted on his loyalty to the Führer, he also spoke out against him, interrupting a man who was not used to being interrupted. A furious Hitler ended the conversation after 45 minutes – and Hamsun and his entourage left in disappointment.

This is the first time this spectacular event in Norwegian and European cultural history has been used as the basis for an entire book. Knut Hamsun – The journey to Hitler explores the trappings of literary genius and authority, as well as the uses of culture in Nazi Germany.

The book's main narrative, the seven-day journey to and from the meeting, ends with an epilogue which includes Hamsun's obituary for Hitler, published on 7th May 1945.

After a teaser which takes the reader straight into the journey, the book – in order to establish the premises of what took place –considers a few episodes from Hamsun's life up until 1943. These include his attempt at doing away with the father figure Ibsen, his Nobel Prize and rise to fame, how he became the favourite of the German far right, his interventions on behalf of Nazi Germany during the war, his antisemitism and his allegiance to the idea of the Germanic peoples, as well as Goebbels' glowing reception of his favourite writer in May 1943. A month later Knut Hamsun sets off to Vienna as the star attraction of a big Nazi propaganda show, a congress of Nazi journalists. It is after having been celebrated as a great success in the second capital of the Reich, Hamsun is flown on to Berghof, Hitler's mountain residence in Southern Bavaria.

Tore Rem (1967–) is a writer, critic and literary scholar working at the University of Oslo. He has previously published books about Kielland, Ibsen and Dickens.

“Farmers don't play tennis. But they could, and they could do it well.” With its leadoff in this old statement, Gudmund Skjeldal writes a book about what makes the sport of tennis so captivating.

It is the story of Wimbledon's magical grass, Roger Federer and Serena Williams' elaborate games. It is the drama of the days of Björn Borg and John McEnroe, when Norwegian cities and streets were completely empty when the final was being played. Wimbledon is shaped like a waiting period in which these books and experiences are reflected upon, and a colorful reportage trip to Wimbledon itself.

SEPP

A BIOGRAPHY OF LEONHARD SEPPALA

In Sepp, Nina Kristin Nilsen writes about one of the most exciting destinies in Norwegian emigration history. Leonhard Seppala was of Kven lineage – from Skibotn in Troms. He emigrated to the United States in 1900, during the gold rush in Alaska. Nilsen writes about this era, the gold miners, immigrants and life in the Arctic in a way that will leave the reader breathless.

But Seppala's greatest claim to fame (in his time, he was one of America's best known people) didn't come from gold mining, but from dog mushing. When the small gold mining community of Nome – on the furthest west coast of Alaska, by the Barents Sea – was struck by a diphtheria epidemic, it couldn't be reached by neither boat nor plane.

FROM SEPP:

‘It was mid-winter, with temperatures down to 45 degrees below zero and winds of over 35 m/s. In a sled relay that was followed by all of the United States via telegraph lines, the dog teams struggled through the Arctic tundra – and when they reached their destination, a new set of heroes was born.’

WHO WILL BUILD THE NATION?

It is not a new notion that some people value becoming a carpenter as something less valuable than getting an academic degree at a University. What is new though, is that many of the people who are trained in practical professions no longer will recommend their children to do the same as them.

The cause of this is the loss of status that these kind of jobs has experienced - but what has caused this loss of status? In this book Jonas Bals explain why social dumping and dropout from vocational studies is undermining the very idea of the Norwegian Social Democracy.

THE SELFIMPROVEMENT INDUSTRY

Daily, we are fed with advice, exhortations and answers about how we should become the best we can be. Coaches, marine commandos, adventurers and self-help gurus promote the message and offer their solutions. The problem is that the stress which the self-improvement industry imposes on us to be the best we can be, makes this impossible to achieve.

More and more people are seeking advice and help to improve themselves and their performance at home, at work and in education. Their support for the self-improvement industry legitimises the notion that we are never really good enough as we are, and this notion eventually becomes part of our own self-understanding. We come to depend more and more on other people as we seek to develop our sense of identity. Neither indifference nor aggressive criticism will help us to understand the popularity of this phenomenon.

This book aims to understand and explain why the selfimprovement industry exists.

Tine has taken her inspiration for this book from our rich cultural tradition of textiles which women have shaped with needles and yarn according to the fashion of the day.

There are long and short jackets and jerseys. There are dresses and tunics with or without a waist or a flare, and with sleeves set in or worked in the round. Many of the garments also have patterns for accessories such as headbands, hats, socks and mittens, if you want to match the garment or just to knit something that can be done quickly. Both sheep's wool and alpaca wool can be used.

This is Tine Solheim's seventh book.

SEWING FOR CHILDREN AGED 3 AND UP

This is a new Tilda concept that Tone Finnanger has created with inspiration for what you can sew for children over the age of three. But that's not to say that you cannot use the same ideas for adults, and there are ideas aplenty here.

The book is divided into three sections: Dolls, Just Animals and Sea and Water.

In Dolls, you will find the doll itself, the doll's house, a quilt, embroidered cushions and dolls for the doll.

In Just Animals, you will find a room filled with strange and wonderful animals. Animals that are so rare that they still haven't been discovered. Here you will find hunched monkeys, colourful camels, strange ostriches, a jungle blanket, cushions and pyjama bags.

In Sea and Water, you will discover a completely new world with everything from mermaids, pirates, cuddly whales, snuggly fish, starfish and a fish toiletry bag to a pirate blanket made of old eye patches.

The book is illustrated throughout with photos and step-by-step drawings.

All patterns are provided in full.

Tone Finnanger (1973–) designs all of the Tilda products herself: the books and other printed works, plywood figures, stamps and stencils, paint and metal works. She is schooled in drawing, design, graphic design and traditional painting handwork techniques. She worked as an interior decorator and window dresser until she started the Tilda company in 1999.

HATS

Hats are incredibly fun to knit: They are small projects you can take with you in your purse, they go by quickly and they're perfect to give away as gifts. But best of all is that you only have to knit one of each!

Marion Rindsem designs beautiful hats, cute hats, simple, difficult and cool hats. She designs hats that suit a family's smallest member, little brother, grandma, mom and dad. Hats is a little Bible of designs with traditional patterns, but also new and unfamiliar combinations. The book has 50 different hat designs – many of them in several different color combinations – so you can let yourself be inspired to play around in your scrap basket. What about an embroidered deer on top of a tough geometric pattern?

If you don't know how to embroider yet, there is a nice little tutorial with step-by-step pictures in the back of the book. And as a little bonus, most of the hats have a beautiful and special challenge at the top: If you could only see yourself from above…

Marion Rindsem started designing knitted items in 2012, when she made her own SoMe-hat. The hat took off quickly on Twitter, and since 2013 she has operated www.marionr.no, where she sells her own knitting patterns and yarn kits. In addition, she holds courses in knitting socks from the toe up and embroidery, and she keeps up a regular #Luetreff (hat meetup) in Oslo. Hats is Marion Rindsem's first knitting book.

IT ' S COOL TO SEW FURNISHINGS, BAGS, CLOTHES

Sewing can be quite fun, and it's extra entertaining when what you're sewing is attractive and useful things you can take out and use again and again. Grete Gulliksen Moe has created a wealth of beautiful designs using both new and traditional techniques and materials. You'll find bags for your knitting, needle holders for your knitting needles, the jacket you'll want to move in to and sew in countless varieties and colors, gorgeous bedspreads and pillows, blankets, bags and baskets.

The book is illustrated with photographs and step-by-step drawings.

Grete Gulliksen Moe (1951–) was the first person to write books on the subject of quilting and they have enjoyed enormous success. Grete teaches in Scandinavia, England and the USA and is known for her unique use of color. Clear,  fresh hues of red, blue, green and yellow are her trademark.

In addition to clothing, you also get patterns for simple and matching purses, holdalls and bags, and at the end of the book, there is a whole page of patterns with simple-cut patterns you can start on as soon as you have mastered the most basic techniques.

BIRDS

COLOURFUL AND CREATIVE

Arne & Carlos do it again!

With a basic pattern for a bird and endless variations, they take us into the colourful avian kingdom.

They have found inspiration from nature both at home in Norway and in their wider travels. There are bird patterns knitted in traditional Norwegian designs, with or without a matching woolly hat. Some of the birds are knitted to a pattern, and others have been decorated with grafting stitches, sequins or feathers.

You can play around with different types of yarn, like embroidery thread and glitter yarn. Rummage in your oddments basket for yarn, old sequin bands, pearls, feathers and embroidery thread. The birds can be decorative for Christmas, Easter, summer or autumn. They can be used in many ways. Use them as table decorations, on table cards or alongside colourful floral decorations. Decorate window hangings with tufts and feathers, or mount them in a glass case like an old-fashioned taxidermy display. How about decorating an old birdcage or renewing the Christmas wreath for the door?

The only limit is your imagination. Great ideas for presents for someone you love.

The book has clear descriptions, simple diagrams and step-bystep pictures. There are projects here for everybody, including beginners.

Did you know that gray cars crash the most and that red cars crash the least? That white, which is used more and more often in both institutions and schools, increases stress, decreases concentration and is a catalyst for headaches?

What are colors, why do we need them and what do we use them for?

In this book, color expert Dagny Thurmann-Moe battles against an increasingly more colorless existence. She shows us how the world has gone from being colorful and full of impressions to being a landscape of gray and white, even in the summer.

In the first part of the book, she gives an introduction to what colors are, why people need colors, and what we use them for. She explains what a color palette is and how you use it.

In the second part, she tackles the use of color in architecture, public spaces, public institutions and cars.

Finally, she shows how we can use colors ourselves, inside our houses and in our closets, and that colors have a natural place –no matter what style you wish to have.

RAW INGREDIENTS

What is the secret of good food? If you ask the cooks, the answer will be: good raw ingredients.

In this book, some of our leading chefs are given selections of seasonal ingredients and invited to describe their relationship to them and how one can best combine them into an enticing meal. There are recipes from Oslo's best chefs and everything you need to know about ingredients and how to choose them, season by season.

What is common to all the chefs is that each in their own way they emphasise the importance of good ingredients as the basis for all cooking. We learn how to go in search of the best vegetables, the freshest fish and the best meat. The skilled chefs then show us how best to maintain the quality of the ingredients as we prepare the food.
