In the early 1970s, a group of scientists wanted to make more food for the world. They looked to the sea. They sampled genes from 41 Norwegian and Swedish rivers, and designed a salmon that was fatter, more docile, and faster growing. This was the beginning of a new industry, salmon farming. The industry spread from coastal Norway to Scotland, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Chile, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. Jobs were created, business boomed, salmon farmers became filthy rich.

Wild salmon stocks disappeared, diseases spread in the salmon farms, salmon louse swarmed, and the new industry became highly contested.

BÅRD TUFTE JOHANSEN, COMEDIAN AND ANGLER In a prizewinning, five-year investigation, the authors Simen Sætre and Kjetil Østli now take a closer look at the global salmon industry. For the first time, the whole story of salmon farming has been told. The result combines nature writing from Norwegian fjords with classical muckraking and character-driven literary nonfiction. The authors start out with a question: What happens when you place a new animal in the fjords? This book is the answer.

THE NEW FISH A global history of salmon farming

FISKEN

Goethe describes the tragedy of development, where great ambitions for society upset nature’s balance. For Shelley, the new creature ultimately becomes a monster. On the other side of this cautious attitude is the engineer-like optimist; our intelligence has taken us this far – so it can therefore also be our salvation. Problems are solved with new research and innovation. If the air gets too hot, we’ll invent technology to slow down the heating. If the atmosphere is filled with CO2, we’ll capture and purify more CO2. If there are fewer wild animals to eat, we must produce more domestic animals or change our eating habits. And with fewer fish in the ocean, we have to create new fish to Yes,eat.the fish – shouldn’t we also domesticate the fish?
FULL TRANSLATIONENGLISHAVAILIABLE
Excerpt from the Prologue, The New Fish We thrash about and are a danger to ourselves and to the rest of the life that surrounds us, wrote biologist Edward O. Wilson, who says that today’s world resembles a Star Wars-like civilization with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology. “Apart from the fact that we mostly behave like monkeys and have a limited life expectancy, we are godlike,” Wilson writes. With this kind of mentality, our intelligence and creative urges can also be our enemy. This is thematized in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In these works, man uses his brain to create something new and innovative – but the results are terrifying.
From forest to ocean with the vessel that changed the world While the Covid-19 pandemic led to closed borders and a break lasting well over two years, Torolf E. Kroglund built his own pram – without any experience. It was going to be a rowing boat – a dinghy. It gets built following a traditional clink-build method, just like the Vikings did and which is now declared a world heritage by UNESCO. At the same time both the author’s and the planet’s health worsens dramatically. Building a boat becomes a way to build a way Thisout.book looks at the history of the boat, from African migrants who at the dawn of time left the continent by boat, to the present boat migrants, and the complicated culture of the coast. Torolf E. Kroglund THE HISTORY OF THE BOAT
NON-FICTION6

I sit alone at breakfast time on Friday morning in my lodgings in Risør, philosophising about this, about the connections between the forest and the sea and about the history, form and function of the boat.
Excerpt from the Prologue, The History of The Boat:
The keel is so thin that it’s amazing to think it’ll hold – along with the strakes forming the sides of the boat.
As I alternate between vomiting and sweating, two paramedics arrive and start talking to me. They lift me. Beyond the tumult in my head, I sense blue lights and sirens. We’re on our way to the hospital.
My neck has got worse. It’s totally stiff. I try to bend and stretch it a bit. Then suddenly it cracks, and the world spins like an out-of-control carousel. Sweat drips from every pore, and something in me knows straight away that this is really bad. As I fall to the floor, I manage to pull my phone down with me and call for help. After that, I’m only semiconscious.
The keel is finished, and that feels like a milestone. It’s been bent into position in the jig frame and secured with a bar clamp in the middle of its curved bottom, with nails at the front and back. In it you can almost see the contours of a boat – even though it’s only one plank.

Hilde Østby MAP OF LONELINESS About the human’s unstoppable desire for community, and what drives us apart
Rights sold to: Canada (Greystone)
In March 2020 the world closed down and stayed completely or partly closed for two and a half years. Most arenas where humans go for companionship, such as offices and concerts, weddings and funerals, disappeared or were decimated overnight. It’s as if the whole world has taken part in a huge experiment in loneliness, according to author Hilde Østby. The result of this experiment is worth dwelling on, as it’s not an easy diagnosis to just brush off. Research shows that loneliness, if it is chronic, is more dangerous for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In Map of Loneliness Hilde Østby approaches the subject on a personal, philosophical and journalistic level in order to get to grips with loneliness – one of our most enigmatic and underKart over ensomheten 130 x 205 mm Hilde Østby (b. 1975) is a historian of ideas, author, journalist and former publishing editor. Eystein Hodevik VIRUSES ON THE LOOSE Through carefully selected stories, the author shows you what a virus is, what it consists of, how it is transmitted and how it produces disease.
Viruses and humans have coexisted forever, so this journey covers biological evolution, our own bodies, historical events, diagnostics, global politics, genetic material, ethics and biological warfare. The book is also about vaccines, one of our most important weapons in the war against viruses. Producing vaccines is a science in itself and is based on knowledge of how viruses are constructed and produce disease. In this book, you’ll get to know different kinds of viruses: some of the most common, some that are extremely cunning and some that are so dangerous their fatality rate is close to 100%. Viruses cause contagion by travelling, just as we do, but their journey doesn’t stop there. The way they produce disease inside us can be viewed as a microscopic travelogue. We shall therefore follow some viruses as they travel through our bodies to reach the cells they both hijack and harm. Andreas lives a peaceful life as an academic and philosopher. One winter’s night his life suddenly changes direction completely. A few days later he is imprisoned, convicted for murder. What happened? Why did it happen? Through his experiences we are invited to imagine what it is like to be locked up in a cell and left all alone with one’s pain. In Imprisoned we get to know prisons from the point of view of the prisoner, and we get an insight into an institution which appears to be neither humane or caring, but rather hostile and destructive. It’s also a deeply personal story about evil, relations, and hope. How can someone live with themselves after ending someone’s life? Is there a possible way to return to oneself, and to society?

Bob Dylan has throughout his sixtyyear-long career achieved a unique position in popular culture, partly because he’s always been able to capture and convey certain features of his contemporaries. He’s been voted the best songwriter of all time, but first and foremost he is one of the leading lyricists in the world. Dylan is literary and his fans are people who read. This places very special demands for a book about Dylan. In this book Erling Aadland has put up a monument of the songwriter, lyricist, and phenomenon that is Bob Dylan.
Erling Aadland DYLAN AND THE POEM
NON-FICTION14
Erling Aadland has published a number of books on poetry and literary theory, among them books and essays about Bob Dylan.
Dylan and the Poem is a 600-pagelong insightful and original essay, with observations and interpretations you can’t find anywhere else. But this book is also an encyclopedia. The book considers Dylan’s whole catalogue, every recorded album with its own material from 1962 to 2020 and analyses the most important songs from each album. Dylan og diktet 151 x 226 mm / 752 pages

“A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” is also difficult to categorise. The song is a prophetic and apocalyptic vision, biblical in tone but balladlike in form, and was unlike anything Dylan had written before. His comments in the album liner notes spawned a stubborn rumour that the song was written during the Cuban missile crisis, but it was actually composed earlier and is loosely based on the old ballad “Lord Randal,” which had long been in the oral tradition as a children’s song. Dylan retained the dialogue form of the original: “Oh where have you been, my blue-eyed son?” – “I’ve been…”, but the answers offered by the blue-eyed son transcend the world of the ballad, striking like a metaphorical and surreal storm – extraordinary in the context of the popular lyrics of the day. Perhaps this lyrical deluge of imagery is the hard rain that the song prophesies? The question-and-answer structure resembles that of “Blowin’ in the Wind,” although in this case the questions are not rhetorical, and question and answer are incorporated into the ballad’s narrative framework. The father (or mother, or someone else) asks five times: “Oh, where have you been… //what did you see…//what did you hear… who did you meet…//what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?” and the son answers that he has been here and there, seen this and that, heard one thing and another, met this person and that, and will go to such and such a place to do this and that – before the verses end with the insistent refrain: “And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard / And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”

Excerpt from Instruction Manual for Couples:
Over the last few years there have been many studies which confirm that troubled relationships affect people’s health. Trouble in romantic relationships is more or less as dangerous for the health as smoking! Some would say that’s an exaggerated claim, some would say it’s scaremongering, but it is actually true. Researchers from Harvard University have followed more than 700 people from the beginning of their 20s and throughout their adult lives.
The numbers are clear: What matters the most for how long we live is not genes, obesity, smoking or physical activity, but the quality of our closest relations. As an adult the relationship between a couple is often the most important one. This made me think. How do I approach this knowledge as a GP for my patients? How do other colleagues do it? How well-known is this connection between relationship quality and health? These questions have led to a PhD-project where I research how trouble in relationships is handled in GP consultations. As a GP we meet 70 percent of the population each year. Through a secure relation and a wholesome approach to the health problems the patients arrive with, we have a unique opportunity to pick up on the relationship problems and show them the way forward, so that they can get help before the patterns of behaviour become too rigid.

Kristin Leer ADHD Seven Roads to Fresh Understanding
ADHD is often defined as a psychiatric disorder, but physician and author Kristin Leer, who has ADHD herself, as well as children with ADHD, cannot see ADHD as the diagnosis of a disease. For the author, it was a relief to find out that she had ADHD. Had she realised earlier that the cause of so many challenges and sorrows – at school, in her professional career, in personal relationships – could be summed up in four simple initials, she would have been spared much frustration and anxiety. ADHD is something you can live with. What’s more, it can sometimes have some surprisingly positive sides. However, ADHD may also make life feel like an uphill struggle, and the range of functional impairments can be extensive.

Our emotions are natural, yet we humans have long tended to think and manage ourselves away from them. It seems far from natural to us to experience what we’re actually feeling – or grasp who our emotions are directed at. In this book, you’ll learn to clear away some of the obstacles blocking your emotions and allow your feelings to ‘run off’ on their own, without you having to think about them so much. AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
Sofie and Erik Hexeberg are doctors, dietary experts and authors. They run Dr. Hexeberg's Clinic in Tønsberg and Bærum and are particularly concerned with how patients can improve their health through dietary changes.
More than 600,000 Norwegians use cholesterol-low ering drugs to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Does everyone benefit from using them? Could many people avoid the side effects by using food as medicine? And is there really a link between high cholesterol, constricted blood vessels and heart failure? These questions and many more are answered in A New Perspective on Cholesterol, where doctors Erik and Sofie Hexeberg take a deep dive into the role of cholesterol for a healthy heart and give us a new understanding of the causes of cardiovascular disease — the second most common cause of death in Norway. Erik Hexeberg and Sofie Hexeberg
Erik Hexeberg and Sofie Hexeberg
In this book the authors demonstrate the link between autoimmune diseases and food proteins by blood tests showing increased concentration of antibodies to specific food proteins and in parallel identifies parts of food proteins in urine samples. The authors propose a model where any food protein could elicit an immune response in a susceptible individual and thereby trigger an autoimmune disease.
Generally, patients are presented with the perception of the autoimmune diseases as being 'auto' in the sense that the body starts to attack itself without any cause and that the disease is also 'auto' in the way that the disease continues and will not be controlled unless the patient is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs.
The dietary advice this book offers is based on this approach, and the book contains stories from people with different autoimmune diseases.

Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season. The book covers a whole year, and the photos show Ida and her family in wellknown locations in Oslo and eventually at their new home on the island of Engeløya in Nordland, Northern Norway.
