All day Little Lion is with me: in the pocket of my jacket, on our way to kindergarten and on the bus. But suddenly Little Lion is gone. The days become gray and sad, and everything feels meaningless without Little Lion. But one day on our way to the bus Mum finds Little Lion on the ground! Thankfully! But, when Little Lion once more disappears, down the sink this time, it is gone forever. One would think it would be easier to lose something a second time, but that's not true. It was only Little Lion who wanted to say goodbye before leaving for good. Where did Little Lion swim off to? It can be anywhere. But Little Lion still lives on in my heart and my thoughts. Anna Fiske has made a touching and insightful picture book about how tender, and also beautiful, it is to be a child and love a toy. Through exceptional illustrations and a simple, yet powerful story, she takes us on a journey through loss, hope and love. Nordic Council jury: «We see the full range of Fiske’s artistry; the analogue, playful, and sensory visual language forms a refreshing whole.»

EVERYONE ELSE Koki lives with her mother and has her own room behind a curtain. They love books and go on holiday to the library, because from there, they can travel anywhere in the world.
Alle de andre 250 x 265mm Age 3–6
The other children in her class have new clothes and get smoothies for lunch. They travel abroad on holiday and have big parties for their birthdays. Why doesn't Koki have the same? Why do they never travel anywhere? And is her room really a proper room when she lives behind a curtain? In Norway, over 10,000 children live in families with persistently low income. Growing up with limited financial resources has a major impact on children's social inclusion and their physical and mental health. In Everyone Else, Gro Dahle portrays how this sense of exclusion leaves its mark. FULL ENGLISH SAMPLE TRANSLATION AVAILABLE

Excerpt, in translation by Lucy Moffatt I wake up lying on something big and lumpy that’s making waves. For a second, I wonder if I’m out at sea because everything underneath me is black and blue. But I can’t smell any saltwater here. What I can smell is vanilla with a hint of liquorice. That’s when I realize I’m lying on an ginormous duvet. And beneath the duvet a giant girl lies snoring. She must be at least ten metres tall and probably weighs a ton. Her hand is enormous. When I put my hand on hers the sight of it makes me jump. I don’t have a hand any more – I have a paw! A white paw. I look down at my body. It’s covered in fur. Thick black fur. Apart from my belly and chest and paws. They’re covered in white fur. I spin around and land on the floor with a crash. Hang on, no – I land on all fours without even thinking about it. This body I’ve ended up in seems to have a will of its own. I look round. There’s no one else here apart from me and the giant girl. The room feels familiar even though it’s enormous. It reminds me of my room, only a hundred times bigger. I creep carefully over to the pile of furniture that’s blocking the door. I slip behind the desk and over to the mirror. When I see my reflection, I start to scream, but the only noise that comes out of my muzzle is ‘Meeeeoooww!’ I’ve turned into Kitty. There’s no doubt about it. But how the heck did it happen?

Excerpt from chapter 3, in translation by Rosie Hedger: That’s when they heard the first bang. It sounded like a balloon popping, but sharper, with a more metallic clang. Suddenly Dad was sitting bolt upright, a grave expression on his face. ‘What was that?’ Erle whispered. She didn’t know why she was whispering, but it felt like the right thing to do. The restaurant had gone weirdly silent. ‘A shot,’ Dad said, his voice low. ‘Get under the table. Now!’ ‘Dad,’ Erle objected, but something about his expression caused her to sink to the floor all the same. The seething anger she’d felt only moments ago was gone, evaporated in an instant. Dad had stood up. Some of the other guests were standing by the window, and two waiters opened the door and looked outside. The streets were bustling with people. They were on their way out to grab a bite to eat or to see a show at the theatre, chatting and laughing, and only a few of them had stopped to glance around them warily. There was another bang. Two, three, four, five in succession. Erle had never actually heard the sound of a gunshot in her life, but still she knew that her dad had made no mistake. ‘Stay here. Don’t go outside. Stay under the table, make sure you’re hidden. No matter what,’ Dad said, striding towards the exit. ‘Dad!’ Erle shouted, slipping out from under the table and running through the restaurant after him. She caught up with him by the door. ‘Dad, where are you going? Don’t go out there!’ He turned around and stroked her hair and her cheek with his large hand. ‘Somebody out there might need help,’ he said gravely. ‘Stay here, my love. Hide. I’ll be back. Just wait here.’ ‘But why do you have to be the one to go? Let someone else do it!’ Erle protested. Didn’t he get it? This was none of their business. They were just Rehman and Erle, they were holidaymakers. This didn’t have anything to do with them. ‘Don’t be scared, I’ve got experience in situations like this, I’ve been in war zones, you know that. I need to help if I can,’ said Dad.

Excerpt, in translation by Rachel Rankin: I wake to the noise of the tractor out in the yard. I am soaked in sweat, even though I’ve kicked off the duvet. Soon summer, yet still not free. Not yet. Soon Father will come in and call on me. It is time for spring farming and we are going to cut all the grass on the farm. I get out of bed, fir needles sticking to my skin. Here on the farm, the sky is a dazzling blue. I have to squint in order to see Father properly. Even though I know he is the only one there. Nobody else. He stands out in the field, getting ready for the first cutting. He holds the scythe in one hand. I run towards him as fast as I can. For too late could be any moment now. Any moment now, Father could extinguish the light with his other hand. I run with my flowing black hair down to the farm. I run, spreading my arms like bat wings, flying down towards Father.

THE LAST VALKYRIE How far would you go to save the one you love most? Set in modern-day Oslo, The Last Valkyrie is a pulse-pounding mix of enemies-to-lovers romance, Norse mythology and a deadly competition for wealth, fame, life and death. But joining the contest means declaring war on her powerful stepfamily — the ambitious twins Kamilla and Lukas. Their mother, Helene ThreshowSpilberg, is amongst Norway's wealthiest, and the twins are known to be ruthless in order to get what they want. The twins also team up with a stranger, someone whose connection to The Valkyrie runs deeper than he will admit. And he will stop at nothing to keep Ava out of the competition.
As the competition unfolds, Ava realises The Valkyrie is more than a contest. It’s a divine trial that could awaken forces older than time itself. To survive, she must solve the riddles of the Norse gods, uncover who her true allies are, and face the terrifying possibility that not all myths are fiction. With the emotional depth of Twilight, the fierce survival energy of The Hunger Games and the secretive intrigue of The Da Vinci Code, The Last Valkyrie launches a new YA trilogy where epic love collides with Norse legend — blazing with mystery, passion, and power.

A whiff of something sensational hangs in the air as I reach the foyer. A small group of students are huddled together just outside the front doors. They are talking excitedly. Instinctively, I am about to turn around, take the emergency exit, but something shimmering in the air catches my attention. What is it? As if bewitched, I walk closer. It takes a moment before I realise that it's a key floating above the cluster of students, perhaps four meters in the air. But, can it be a key? A key cannot float in empty air. But that is precisely what it does? The key appears to be made of glinting gold metal, with delicate ornaments and tiny flowers. It slowly rotates on its own axis. As the key turns all the way around, I see that there are runes carved into the shaft. ᚢᛅᛚᚴᛁᚱᛁᛁᚾ. I learned runes before I learned the alphabet. It spells The Valkyrie. «Oh my God, what the hell is that?» I hear a girl shout, without really paying attention. The key is barely bigger than a regular house key, but even from a distance it is perhaps the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. «How is that possible? Is it actually magical?» the same girl asks. She sounds scared. I don’t know if I am scared. All I feel is a very powerful emotion. Like I am completely mesmerised.

In the wake of the women-led uprising in Iran and the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, religious control over women’s lives has become more visible than it has been in decades. Acclaimed feminist and author Marta Breen places these current events in a broader historical and global context, showing how religious fundamentalism continues to threaten women’s rights even in Western societies. Based on thorough research, Born Free tackles topics such as forced marriage, education bans, dress codes, and female genital mutilation in a respectful yet direct manner. The book’s core message is clear: everyone has the right to decide over their own life, while also respecting freedom of religion, as long as it does not violate basic human rights.
This is a vital book that encourages reflection and conversation about the role of religion in society and the position of women within the world’s faiths. Marta Breen (b. 1976) is a writer, journalist and one of Norway's most profiled feminists. She made her debut in 2006 with the book Girls, Wine and Song, about Norwegian women through times in Music.
