SAMUEL AND GRANDPA: THE ART OF VIVID LIVING

What happens when a grandfather who has put all his dreams on hold gets a new chance because his grandson refuses to let his life fade away in silence?

When his grandfather is about to move into a nursing home, tired in body and lonely in his home, renowned adventurer Samuel Massie fears it will mark the beginning of his grandfather’s final chapter. So Samuel decides to give him one last journey. A true bucketlist expedition: riding a motorcycle through South America, skydiving over Australia, and diving deep into old memories. It becomes the start of a journey where Grandpa not only rediscovers the world but also himself.

Samuel and Grandpa is a gripping, wise, and deeply human story about daring to live, even when it seems too late.

With a narrative that balances humour and solemnity, action and reflection, Massie explores both generational gaps and unexpected closeness, delivering a deeply moving story of life’s final phase and all the possibilities that still remain.

Samuel and Grandpa is a book that makes readers laugh, cry, and want to live more fully. Because it isn’t just about one man’s dreams. This is about all of us.

Samuel Massie (b. 1992) is an author, TV host and expeditionist who is known, among other things, for his expedition to Antarctica with the sailboat Berserk.

Samuel og Bestefar 130 x 205 mm

Excerpt from the first chapter:

«Grandpa! Are you alright?» I try to drown out the roar of the engine. My voice trembles, but I try not to show my nerves. It's his choice, after all. The old man, who normally has poor hearing, sits seemingly undisturbed with his familiar smile and gazes out across the lush Australian landscape. He looks satisfied. I wonder if he knows this will be his last experience. Or maybe he has just experienced so much mastery over the past few months that he feels immortal? I don't know, but he's not scared. I, on the other hand...

It was my idea that we should embark on this adventure, and it's not the first time on the trip that I think our last moment has arrived. We have been stranded with a motorcycle in the Andes Mountains, almost been eaten by coyotes, and almost been kidnapped by Argentinian robbers. And all those times Grandad has gripped his chest, and I have thought that this is when his heart will finally burst, whether it's been in a sleeping bag in the middle of the pampas or in the middle of an attempt to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Almost everyone was negative about us embarking on this adventure. How could I take a cancer-stricken man in his eighties on an expedition around the world? He needed peace and care. Why didn't I agree with that? What kind of confidence did I have that thought the trip of a lifetime was better for him than all the medicine in the world?

A YEAR OF BIRDS

Ornithological Field Notes from My Immediate Surroundings

Sometimes you discover something new, or see something familiar in a new way. The space expands. The world gets bigger. A curtain is pulled aside, and you see into a parallel universe.

With these words, a journey begins. Not across continents, but into the small things that surrounds us. When epilepsy forced journalist and amateur ornithologist Torbjørn Ekelund to abandon his plans for a globe-spanning bird book, his world shrank to the local woods of Maridalen, his garden, and a small cabin by the sea. But in that shrinking, something expanded.

Told through a series of diary entries over the course of a year, A Year of Birds follows Ekelund’s growing awareness of the birds around him. At the beginning of the year, he knows almost nothing about birds. By the end of the year, he knows a little more. He watches blackbirds and bullfinches, observes gulls and geese, and lets the ordinary transform into the extraordinary through simple, sustained attention.

This is a book about birds but also about perception, limitation, and the beauty of staying still. It is about discovering nature not in far-off landscapes, but right where you are. With warmth, humour, and a quiet existential undertone, A Year of Birds invites us to look more closely, live more attentively and see the world anew.

Torbjørn Ekelund (b. 1971) is a writer, author and part owner of the online magazine Harvest. His books have been translated into ten languages, including English, German, Spanish and Mandarin. He was awarded the The Banff Mountain Adventure Travel Award for A Year in the Woods.

Hessen, the book combines scientific facts with gripping stories about bird species and their incredible migrations, and gives us a deeper understanding of nature's beauty and vulnerability. With a focus on European landscapes and birds of paradise, as well as personal stories from the rugged west coast of Norway, this is a book that informs and inspires.

Bird's-Eye Viewis a tribute to the world of birds and a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural landscapes for future generations.

NORTH OF THE WINTER SUN

What I Heard in the Waves

Only by travelling the sea way can you truly understand the coast. For three years, Veronica Skotnes has sailed along the coast of Northern Norway, searching for people stories and nature experiences from the country's most remote and windswept region.

North of the Winter Sun depicts a journey by boat, as well as an inner journey. Veronica Skotnes travels through polar nights and under the midnight sun, on the calm sea and through storms. She's all by herself on the deck of an old sailing boat.

The book emphasises a beautiful and dwindling part of Norway's coastal culture, alongside the author's own reflections, experiences and challenges from sailing in the Arctic.

«A fantastic travel report that strongly touches on the challenges of life and the present.»

40 WEEKS, A HUMAN PREGNANCY AND 81 OTHER WAYS TO REPRODUCE

It takes 40 weeks to grow a human baby, and along the way the relationship between the foetus and the pregnant woman bears resemblance to that of a parasite and its host. One takes and takes, while the other one almost dies in the process. Why do we as humans carry our babies inside our bodies for so long, and is there a reason that we are throwing up and feeling nauseous? Are there any better ways to reproduce? Does any living being reproduce in a stranger way than us humans?

Throughout the 40 weeks of a human pregnancy we meet another being who’s finished reproducing each week. The spotted hyena gives birth after only 16 weeks, but she has to give birth through a penis-shaped clitoris, which cracks open during labour. Do they have it easier? The common Surinam toad doesn’t have a uterus, but instead has evolved to have a swollen piece of skin on their backs where the eggs sink in. This way she can carry the offspring with her, instead of leaving the eggs in the water. Are there any signs that it’s actually quite clever how the human body handles it?

This book gives evolutionary comfort throughout the troubles of pregnancy and an explanation as to how we ended up here, as the smartest species with the most tiresome, but nonetheless not such a stupid way to reproduce.

«There is no better literature than great nonfiction. Written by specialists who are unbound by strict terminology or publication pressure, but in a liberal and relaxed language. The biologist, journalist, writer and columnist Blix is incredibly good here. […] the most amazing stories about mating, pregnancy, gender and sexuality.»

Anna Blix ANIMALS WHO ARE WORSE PARENTS THAN YOU

As a parent, it’s not always easy to be the best version of yourself. We’ve all been there; scrolling on the phone instead of joining in with the four-year-old’s roleplay, serving the kids plain pasta for dinner several days in a row, and who hasn’t let them have a bit too much screen time in exchange for a sneaky lie-in?

It might be a relief to know that there are worse parents out there. You probably haven’t tricked anyone else into thinking that your child is theirs so that you can skip the whole child-rearing thing. You haven’t rolled over and accidentally squished your distraught youngsters, or let them fight their way out of a rotting corpse. Your kids didn’t come out of an egg, to discover that you had already abandoned them for the rest of their lives. You haven’t killed their half-siblings, or simply left them because the job of looking after them became too exhausting. You haven’t let a youngster starve to death. And not least: you’ll be surprised how many species actually eat their own children.

Animals Who Are Worse Parents Than You, gives an insight into the strange and often disturbing ways that some animal species relate to their offspring. Ultimately their strategies work, just like ours, but it must be said that human children have a lot to thank us for.

Sumayo Jirde Cali ON LOVE, ON WAR

With tender and personal language, Jirde Ali writes about a year of her life when she lost her footing, and how she gradually found her way back. Through diary notes and reflections, we follow the author's inner and outer struggles: against the racism she encounters in society, and against the darkness within herself. How does a human being, banished to their innermost corners, break free from the violence that has marked and confined both body and mind? By finally acknowledging her own vulnerability, rediscovering herself, and recognising the love that surrounds her.

In the summer of 1940, 16-year-old Agnes befriended Ruth Maier, a Jewish refugee four-year-older than her. Agnes grew up in a resistance family and later learned that Ruth had been arrested by the Nazis. Yet, in 1944, Agnes made a choice that would haunt her family for decades—she married a Nazi. It’s a decision her son, journalist and historian Bjørn Westlie, has struggled to understand ever since.

For some Norwegians, peace never truly arrived in 1945. That’s when the punishment began. In Mother’s Choice, Westlie explores how the Germany's Nazi occupation of Norway shaped his mother’s life, and the lives of those around her, long after the war ended. Memories of shame, guilt, betrayal and loneliness are told through the eyes of a son trying to care for his mother and make sense of a difficult childhood. Step by step, Westlie uncovers his mother's harrowing life story, the consequences of the choices she made—and the ones made for her by others.

Mother’s Choice is a standalone sequel to Father’s War (Aschehoug), which won the prestigious Brage Prize in 2008. Bjørn Westlie (b. 1949) is a Norwegian journalist, author, and historian with a PhD. He has written several critically acclaimed books on World War II.

NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME A Generational Story

For a long time, the adults believed that reason had won. That war was a thing of the past. That the future automatically meant democracy, freedom and peace. They told us the world would improve on its own. That idea is extremely naive. And it has cost our generation dearly.

Gaute Børstad Skjervø was just 16 years old when he survived the 22 of July terrorist attack by hiding in a crevice on the Utøya island. One of the older youths— just 20—told him that, being the youngest, he had to hide deepest in the crevice. Later, they swam for their lives as gunshots echoed across the island.

After 22 July 2011, Skjervø became an involuntary expert on extremism and fascism. Today, he is the leader of the Norwegian Labour Youth Party (AUF) and one of the most promising young politicians in Norway. He still carries in him an anger which he wants to use to fight against the forces that took the lives of his friends, and to fight for the community.

This is his personal story. A young man’s political awakening. And his powerful answer to the young people and parents who fear for the future: «I have seen the darkest in people, but also the brightest.»

Magnus Braaten and Kenneth Fossheim

THE LIE

The Police Chase for «Norway's Most Dangerous Woman»

The Lie is a gripping tale of murder, deception, and controversial investigative methods. Award-winning crime journalists Magnus Braaten and Kenneth Fossheim challenge readers to consider how far the Norwegian police should be allowed to go when faced with serious, unsolved mysteries. What happens when the very person tasked with uncovering the truth is a notorious liar?

Elisabeth Aaslie does not like being called Norway's most dangerous woman, yet that is how the media described her when she became the first woman in Norwegian history to receive the country’s maximum sentence – 21 years in prison.

The police began pursuing Aaslie in the spring of 2014, when her ex-boyfriend was found dead in a hotel room. Pills were scattered around him. The doctor at the crime scene believed it to be suicide, but in the following days, increasingly suspicious information reached the police.

This marked the beginning of an investigation unlike anything Norway had ever seen. Undercover police agent Anna Andersen used extraordinary methods to become best friends with Elisabeth, a mother of seven and the suspect in a double homicide.

Based on the police agent's secret recordings, investigative case files, and extensive interviews with Elisabeth Aaslie herself, journalists Braaten and Fossheim tell a story of deception and self-deception. The reader is brought face-to-face with the perpetrator, and given a unique insight into a murder investigation that defies all expectations.

Magnus Braaten (b. 1995) is a crime reporter with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He has covered a number of high-profile crime cases and made his debut as an author with The Lørenskog Mystery (2021).

Kenneth Fossheim (b. 1991) is a crime reporter with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He is specialised in crime journalism and made his debut as an author with The Lørenskog Mystery (2021).

THE UNLIKELY SERIAL KILLER

In The Unlikely Serial Killer, one of Norway's leading feature journalist, Simen Sætre, delivers the first comprehensive, investigative account of Norway's most talked-about serial killer. In 1983, Arnfinn Nesset was convicted of poisoning and killing 22 elderly people at the nursing home he managed in the small town, Orkdal. Nesset is not only the worst serial killer in Norway, but he also regularly appear on lists of the worst serial killers in the world. Yet today, fifty years later, the case has never been explained or never truly solved.

When Adresseavisen revisited the case in 2002, they concluded that “no one has solved the Arnfinn Nesset riddle.” Despite years of speculation, the mystery remains: what could have driven a respected nursing home director to commit such horrific crimes?

During the investigation, Nesset confessed, describing an eerie “urge to kill” that triggered physical symptoms like sweating and heart palpitations. He even claimed responsibility for far more deaths than he could realistically have committed. But before the trial, he retracted every confession, stating he had been pressured during interrogations and felt he had no choice but to comply.

Perhaps most baffling of all, Nesset was convicted entirely on circumstantial evidence. He was found in possession of the poison used but claimed it was intended to euthanize a dog. No technical or forensic evidence ever proved his involvement in the 22 murders.

While researching the book, Sætre has had access to all the investigation documents of the Nesset case. This is material that the public has not had access to before, and which brings new insight into the case and puts it in a different light.

This is not just true crime — this is an attempt to finally solve one of the most enduring riddles in Scandinavian criminal history.

Autistic Diaries combines up-to-date academic material with the author's own experiences over 42 years as an undiagnosed autistic person. It takes us through the challenges and joys associated with childhood, work, relationships and parenthood. The author discusses how masking autistic traits can lead to anxiety, depression and burnout. She puts this in context with the broader debate about women's health.

With its diary format, this book appeals to a general audience interested in psychology, mental health, societal issues, as well as gender equality issues. It not only gives a voice to invisible high-functioning autistic women, but also raises important questions about how we as a society encounter and deal with minds that react in a different way. It opens up a broader question about mental health, gender equality, and how diversity can enrich our lives and our communities.

Arnhild Lauveng A ROAD

BACK FROM SCHIZOPHRENIA

Arnhild Lauveng spent ten years in secure wards suffering from schizophrenia. She was deeply psychotic, self-destructive and broke glasses and plates to cut herself with the shards.

In this book, the author takes the reader into a world of voices and hallucinations, where she is chased by hordes of rats and packs of wolves with yellow eyes and slavering jaws snap at her heels. We learn to understand that these illusions have their own logic and how they can be interpreted – and the author’s interpretations are like solutions to small crime mysteries.

This is the powerful story of her journey back to reality, assisted by a mother who refused to give up hope, a victory that only a handful believe is possible and that sadly is seldom achieved.

Vigdis Hjorth & Line Norman Hjorth LIKE IT OR LUMP IT

The Year We Got Cancer

Like It or Lump It is a book about the sudden upheaval and change a serious diagnosis can cause.

In the spring of 2023, mum-of-two Line Norman Hjorth was diagnosed with breast cancer. Barely six months later her mother – author Vigdis Hjorth – received the exact same diagnosis. In this book, where the narrative switches between mother and daughter, we follow the two women through their treatment as both patient and next of kin. Two roles that were completely new for them both, and two roles which can be difficult to balance - and which mother and daughter manage in very different ways. They go through the highs and lows, both in terms of medical treatment and their parent-child relationship. But at least they both got new boobs as part of the process!

This is an exceptionally moving story – unsentimental and poignantly narrated.

Line:

I have always feared cancer. I have imagined hundreds of times what it would be like to get the diagnosis, how I would react, how awful that life would be. I have cancer now. And the reality turned out to be very different to my imagined scenarios. Now I know how multifaceted the diagnosis is and that it is not an automatic death sentence as the words had previously equated in my mind.

I have decided to have faith, that life goes on.

Ŭ In a society that sleeps too little, it's more imporant than ever to understand how it affects your health and your life

Ŭ Why we sleep by Matthew Walker

THE AMAZING SLEEP

A sleep scientist's guide to better sleep hygiene

A groundbreaking book that will transform the way you think about sleep and reveal how deeply it shapes your health and everyday life.

Norway’s leading sleep scientist, Bjørn Bjorvatn, takes you on a fascinating scientific journey to show how the hours you spend on the pillow directly influence your brain, body, and long-term well-being. Drawing on the latest research, he explains how chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt cognitive function, weight regulation, immunity, and even increase the risk of serious disease, while good sleep can literally extend your life expectancy.

In a time when many struggle to get a good night’s rest, and others underestimate just how essential sleep really is, Bjorvatn offers clear, evidence-based advice to help you understand your own sleep needs, overcome sleep problems, and create the best conditions for deep, restorative rest. He also uncovers the powerful role sleep plays in mental health, learning, memory, and creativity.

Through specific examples, the scientist and doctor reveals the many ways sleep shapes our lives: from how it influences critical political decisions made in the dead of night, to how it impacts exhausted parents in important moments, and even how technology changes our perception of sleep quality.

You spend a third of your life asleep. This book gives you the knowledge you need to finally understand what happens in your body and brain while you sleep – and what really happens when you don’t.'

Bjørn Bjorvatn is Norway's leading sleep scientist, leads the National Centre for Sleep Medicine, and is a physician/sleep specialist at the Bergen Sleep Centre. He is also a professor of general practice. For many years, Bjorvatn has researched sleep and sleep problems, held numerous lectures and courses around the country about sleep, and has written multiple books on the subject.

Religious control and women's fight for freedom

Born Free is a fascinating and thought-provoking graphic novel about the impact religion has had, and continues to have, on women's freedom. It explores how religious practices have restricted women’s rights and shaped their lives across different cultures and societies.

In the wake of the women-led uprising in Iran and the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, religious control over women’s lives has become more visible than it has been in decades. Acclaimed feminist and author Marta Breen places these current events in a broader historical and global context, showing how religious fundamentalism continues to threaten women’s rights even in Western societies.

Based on thorough research, Born Free tackles topics such as forced marriage, education bans, dress codes, and female genital mutilation in a respectful yet direct manner. The book’s core message is clear: everyone has the right to decide over their own life, while also respecting freedom of religion, as long as it does not violate basic human rights.

This is a vital book that encourages reflection and conversation about the role of religion in society and the position of women within the world’s faiths.

Marta Breen (b. 1976) is a writer, journalist and one of Norway's most profiled feminists. She made her debut in 2006 with the book Girls, Wine and Song, about Norwegian women through times in Music. Are men wiser and funnier than women, since they are quoted more often? Of course not, it's just that the microphone has been easier for men to grab. For years, feminist and author Marta Breen has collected quotes from authors, artists, activists and politicians – all which are now gathered in this book.

There are classic quotes and old favourites from the first women rights activists, and apposite comments by current politicians, pop artists, activists and more. A well-formulated phrase inspires action. Perhaps best said by actress Phyllis Diller: «Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight.»

Ida Wirak Trettevik A KNITTER’S YEAR

Knitting is not just for the colder seasons, as knitting designer Ida Trettevik proves with the 30 patters found in A Knitter’s Year.

Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season.

The book covers a whole year, and the photos show Ida and her family in well-known locations in Oslo and eventually at their new home on the island of Engeløya in Nordland, Northern Norway.

NORWEGIAN MITTENS

34 patterns inspired by traditional Norwegian knitting

Timeless mittens, powerful stories – 34 patterns rooted in Norwegian tradition

In this inspiring collection, acclaimed designer Nina Granlund Sæther presents 34 exquisite mitten patterns, all grounded in the rich heritage of traditional Norwegian knitting. Using pure Norwegian wool yarn, each design features elegant, contemporary colour palettes that are fresh, muted, and beautifully balanced.

What sets this book apart is its subtle feminist thread: each mitten is named after a remarkable Norwegian woman—trailblazers like Aasta Hansteen, Betzy Kjelsberg, Camilla Collett, and Gina Krog. Alongside each pattern, you’ll find a short introduction to their lives and legacies, celebrating their contributions while keeping their stories quite literally in your hands.

The book is also a practical treasure trove for knitters. It addresses the most common questions and challenges: covering yarn and colour selection, needle types, gauge, sizing, picking up stitches for the thumb, how to read and mirror pattern diagrams, correcting mistakes, decorative techniques, and final finishing. The mitten is close to designer Nina Granlund Sæther's heart – it is one of her favourite items to knit and design, and she is perhaps our foremost designer of knitted mittens in Norway. There is no one better to help you keep your hands warm through the colder seasons.

Nina Granlund Sæther is a journalist and editor. She trained as an arts and crafts teacher and has written several books on handcraft. She contributes patterns to the weekly press and gives lessons on knitting.
