WINNING INVESTMENT PROVES TO BE PROPERTY It’s official: Bricks and mortar is the number one way to earn a place on the Rich List in Australia’s modern economy. The 2016 ‘BRW Rich 200’ was released a couple of weeks ago, and 50 of the candidates made their fortunes primarily through real estate.

In fact, the collective wealth of the propertyfocused rich-listers was more than three times larger than the rich-listers with businesses oriented around the resources sector.

This year, apartment developer and landlord Harry Triguboff even managed to knock Gina Rinehart off her long-held perch at top of the list.

Up-and-coming real estate investors will be further encouraged that many of the propertyfocused candidates are self-made, while those in other industries tend to inherit their empires.

Several young property entrepreneurs debuted on the list this year too – including Perth local Paul Blackburne. It goes to show you’re never too young or too old to find success in real estate.

May has proved to be a month where we may well look back and say that was the pivotal month. We believe there is a lot of pent up demand waiting on the sidelines and this was evident in our numbers - just shy of 1,000 buyer enquiries, 210 home opens, 638 buyers met face-to-face, and 21 properties sold. Our auctions were generally hotly contested with multiple bidders and reserve prices being smashed.

PROFILE A GRAND DANCE OF COLOUR AND SHADOW IAN DE SOUZA’S MASTERING MOVEMENT: JUNE 4-24 The wild horses of Larzac might have sparked the inspiration for Ian de Souza’s latest collection, but it was rhythmic dancers in Bangladesh, along with other discoveries during his world travels, which provided momentum to bring it to life. The high-energy collection of works that resulted will be exhibited at Linton & Kay’s St Georges Terrace gallery this month.

Encompassing eclectic blocks of colour, Mastering Movement explores the phenomenon of light and movement. It is the second partnership between Linton & Kay and the Fremantle-based creative – in 2013, a hugely successful ‘introspective’ exhibition marked Ian’s 30-year anniversary of being an artist.

“I paint everything I love about life,” Ian says. “I’m always trying to push the boundaries and search for ways to interpret life in different ways.

In these works, I played with the shadows to the point that the horses started to be lost, and the shadows became the key focus.”

One of Ian’s personal favourite works in the collection, Horses of Larzac 2, features abstract embodiments of the horses he encountered while exploring this rugged region of France. Measuring 1.23m by 1.83m, the proportions of the painting are just as dramatic as the subject matter within. The viewer feels like they can almost walk into the wall and join the lively scene.

In a nod to his Eastern heritage, Ian

also experimented with traditional Chinese rice paper to create several works for the exhibition. Ian says he layered sheets on top of each other, with strokes of dark ink allowed to soak through.

“I love the wonderful, happy accidents that are created through this process,” he explains. “It’s so hard to control, so you just have to work with it and not against it.”

Mastering Movement is open to the public from June 4 to June 24, with friends of Caporn Young invited to the official opening on Thursday June 9 at 6-8pm. The works range in price, from $1,200 for ink on paper, through to $15,000 for the largest oil on canvas.
