PREPARING FOR 2022 The Board of Governors met in September to review the Strategic Goals of the medical society over the past year and to develop goals for 2022.

One of our major goals is to continue to help better connect the medical community. If you are interested in serving on one of the following committees or service opportunities, please get in touch with Pam Irwin at pirwin@capmed.org.

- Scholarship Committee - award scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice medicine upon completion of their residencies.

ENGAGE - Membership Committee - to investigate applicants for membership as indicated

ALLIANCE CORNER

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear CMS Alliance Members: I will conclude this year the same way I began — with gratitude. Thank you for the honor of serving you as president. Thank you for your flexibility as we learned new skills. Thank you for your support as we adjusted to new ways of meeting and serving our community. We faced many challenges this year. Yet, despite all of the obstacles, the CMS Alliance had an incredibly successful year. THANK YOU! Thank you for your support of the first annual Holiday Card Fundraiser. We raised over $6,200 in just four weeks! Your extraordinary generosity allowed us to serve frontline healthcare workers by underwriting the cost of creating a Respite Room at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s Northeast Emergency Room.

Additionally, we were able to donate $500 to FSU College of Medicine’s annual Holiday Toy and Clothing Drive for children of migrant farm workers in Gadsden County. The remaining proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for local medical and/or nursing students in 2022.

Congratulations to the Executive Board Members for 2022: Codie Bryant (President), Heather Redfield (President-Elect), Michelle Reyes (V.P. Membership), Emily Farber (Treasurer), Leanne Dickhute (Treasurer-Elect), and Ashlee Borom (Secretary). Thank you for your enthusiasm and willingness to serve our community of medical spouses. SIMPLER TIMES

COUNTRY CHRISTMAS

By Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP (“Pedro”) Preparations for Christmas started way-a-head of time in Simpler Times.

We saved some cotton from the fields so there would be snow beneath the tree. We didn’t know what snow looked like anyhow. There was the collection of chewing gum wrappers from Juicy Fruit and Spearmint gum all year so silver icicles could be cut and strung on the tree. We kept our eyes opened all year for the perfect pine or cedar tree in the back field hoping it would be just right when school let out for Christmas.

One day in October 1948 Pedro headed over to the back field to check on the tree which had been picked out earlier. It was pitch-black dark when he got back and Mama was upset and had worried herself sick. Mama said, “Pedro, if you ever go off again and stay till dark without telling me, you’re goin’ to have to live with the Consequences.” Mary Alice, my younger sister, quickly responded and said, “Mama, if Pedro goes to live with the Consequences, I’ll git to have the room all by myself.” Mama then said that she might send both of us off to live with the Consequences.

Before we knew it Christmas was about to be upon us.

Dad had taken an extra job butchering some hogs and we had hoped there would be some extra money for some play purties. Mama had already started cookin’ our favorite cakes – German Chocolate cake, Ice-box Fruit cake and Lemon-Cheese cake. We stayed busy lickin’ empty bowls after each cookin’.

Finally the Christmas tree was all set up in the front room. The house had three rooms. The front room served as the kids’ room and the living room. The middle room was where Mama and Daddy slept and the back room was the kitchen. Some folks called this a shotgun house. We called it home. We had the good fortune of having the Christmas tree in our room (the front room) and many kids weren’t that lucky.

Pearlie and Willie dropped by later to see the tree and Willie said that it was the purtiest tree he had ever seen.

We knew he was telling the truth. He then saw the picture hanging on the wall and asked Mary Alice if she and Pedro were Christians. Mary Alice replied, “No. We’re Baptists.” Pedro joined in and said, “Mama and Daddy are Baptists, Grandma’s a Baptist, all my kinfolks are Baptists…nobody’s goin’ to make a Christian out of me.”

On Christmas Eve it was hard getting to sleep with the moon shining through the window on the star on top of the tree made from a Prince Albert tobacco can turned wrong side out.

This was the most beautiful sight and happiest moment there ever was. The next morning there were nuts, oranges and a real Hopalong Cassidy cap gun for Pedro and some nuts, oranges and a Raggedy Ann doll with a blanket for Mary Alice.

There we were. Me, Mary Alice, Mama, Daddy, and Grandma all gathered together. I look back and think Pedro was the luckiest person in the whole-wide world, and he was. I wish we could go back and we could all be gathered together one more time. Maybe, just maybe, Grandma and Mama might be looking down and saying Pedro remembered us at Christmas in Simpler Times.

This was the purtiest tree in all Colquitt County. We had spent two whole days stringin’ up popcorn to rope around the tree. Icicles were hung and the cotton was placed under the tree. Mary Alice started drawing a picture to hang on the wall by the tree. Pedro asked her what picture she was drawing. She replied, “A picture of God for Christmas.” Pedro told her that we didn’t know what God looked like. Mary Alice then said, “We do now.” Mary Alice then wrote “God” underneath the picture so we could recognize him.

PHYSICIAN WELLNESS BURNOUT INVENTORY This is an adapted version of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, one of several such validated instruments used to assess the presence of burnout in many occupations. Each of these instruments, including this one, has its own unique advantages and limitations. This sample is provided not as a definitive measure of the presence or absence of burnout, but merely as one potential piece of data for you to consider as you explore issues related to physician wellness and resilience.

With a goal of treating 1,000 patients, FLA-MOM seeks to have a positive impact on the North Florida community by providing important access to dental care.

Treatments offered at FLA-MOM include: cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, pediatric dentistry and limited dentures and partials.

CMS FOUNDATION RECEIVES FUNDS FROM COMMUNITY SUPPORT

CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION RECOGNIZED FOR ITS COVID-19 RESPONSE IN GADSDEN COUNTY On October 19, 2021, the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners presented a $20,000 check to the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Executive Director Pam Irwin. The funding awarded from the Gadsden County’s American Rescue Plan grant, recognizes the Capital Medical Society Foundation and its We Care Network program’s response in Gadsden County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over $2 million in donated specialty healthcare has been coordinated for Gadsden County residents during the pandemic. In addition, the CMSF has distributed donated PPE to healthcare workers, migrant workers, churches, and co-ops in Gadsden County. The Gadsden County Board of Commissioners also has awarded $27,000 to the We Care Network from its indigent care surtax fund. Annually, the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation ranks the overall health outcomes for each county in the U.S. In 2018, Gadsden County was ranked 64th out of 67 counties; however, in 2020, Gadsden was ranked 65th out of 67. The We Care Network program is funded through grants and private donations.

CREATIVE STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR THE CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION’S WE CARE NETWORK When trying to identify a good cause to support, TCC student Ben Jones asked his mother. His mother, Dr. Lynn Jones, a family medicine physician at Capital Health Plan recommended the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s We Care Network program. The program coordinates donated specialty medical and dental care for low-income, uninsured adults in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla Counties. Last year, over $8 million in donated healthcare was coordinated. With that recommendation, Ben and his fellow students and friends Benjamine Cordova and Kiana Lucien launched a doughnut fundraiser on TCC’s campus. Ben shared that the doughnuts were free, but customers were encouraged to donate to the We Care Network program. In less than two weeks, the trio raised $1,000 to help increase access to healthcare for the neediest in the community.

FSU COLLEGE OF MEDICINE’S HEALTHCARE FOR ALL WEEK SUPPORTS THE CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION’S WE CARE NETWORK The FSU College of Medicine held their annual Healthcare for All Week from November 1-5 this year. The week’s events included an uninsured patient panel discussion featuring two of our We Care Network patients, and a Painting with a Purpose fundraiser.

Throughout the week, the FSU College of Medicine medical students fundraised and donated the proceeds to the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s We Care Network.

On November 15, 2021, second-year FSU College of Medicine students, Rida Sadaf Darji and Emily Gansert presented a check for $545 to Diana Bixler, We Care Network Program Coordinator.

We wanted to take this time to remind you of some important CARES Act provisions that are scheduled to expire at year’s end. These provisions may affect you— and even make it easier for you to make a gift to the Capital Medical Society Foundation, Inc. They include:

may be tax-deductible. Such contributions, though, will REDUCE the tax-free $100,000 QCD limit. For example, if a donor makes a QCD of $10,000 to the Capital Medical Society Foundation in 2021 and also contributes $7,000 to their IRA, the Foundation will receive the full $10,000, but the tax-free portion of the QCD will be reduced to $3,000. The remaining $7,000 will be taxable income to the donor.

An expanded charitable giving incentive that allows taxpayers who take the standard deduction to make up to $300 in charitable cash contributions for single filers ($600 for married couples) to qualified charities like ours (but not to supporting organizations or donor advised funds) this year.

These changes notwithstanding, QCDs from IRAs have become a familiar and useful tool for charitable giving.

The Capital Medical Society Foundation invites you to consider directing a QCD to it either now at the close of 2021, or in early 2022. Under certain conditions, a QCD at the beginning of the year is preferable to yearend giving. We are happy to meet with you and your professional advisors to discuss your gift and hope you will join your many colleagues who are using QCDs to support the mission of the Capital Medical Society Foundation. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) and Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) RMDs from IRAs were suspended for 2020, due to the pandemic. The requirement has been reinstated for 2021. The December 2019, Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act modified certain aspects of the way IRAs work. In prior years, individuals who had attained the age of 70 1/2 and older could transfer tax free up to $100,000 from their IRAs, in any given year, to a qualified public charity, such as the Capital Medical Society Foundation.

The QCD could be applied, in whole or in part, toward the donor's annual RMD. Now, the SECURE Act has changed the age when individuals must start taking RMDs from age 70 1/2 to age 72. Individuals can still make QCDs starting at age 70 1/2 even if they are not taking RMDs at that time. However, that is affected by another change the SECURE Act made relative to IRA contributions and the QCD. Under prior law, those age 70 1/2 and older could not make new contributions to an IRA. Now, IRA owners at any age may make contributions to their accounts, the amounts of which 18

The Impact of Private Support: The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $120.7 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2020-21, which ended June 30, 2021, more than $8.4 million in healthcare was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $44,000 was awarded in 2021. An additional $1,500 was awarded from The Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics Endowment. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2021, the CMSF awarded a total of $15,000 in grants to Elder Care Services for their In-Home Services Program, the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, and to Lighthouse of the Big Bend for aids for the visually-impaired.

Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam: You can make a gift to the CMS Foundation in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone, such as a fellow physician, you hold in high esteem or has taken care of you or your family. The CMS Foundation will send an acknowledgement letter to those you memorialize and honor.
