MINUTES: CMS MEMBERSHIP MEETING OCTOBER 16, 2018 The mission of the Capital Medical Society is to promote the practice of medicine for the ultimate benefit of the patient.

I. Business Meeting – Capital Medical Society

A. Welcome – Dr. David Dixon, President, called the

meeting to order at 6:40 pm. Dr. Dixon thanked

Dr. Dixon introduced Amy Goldsberry, ACOM Core Site Coordinator for Tallahassee and Dr. Richard Thacker, Assistant Dean of Clinical Sciences and Clinical Resources for ACOM. Dr. Thacker introduced the ACOM students in attendance and briefly explained their educational track in the community.

REFLECTIONS ON OUR LOSS AND GRIEF

By Faisal Munasifi, M.D., Chairman, Physician Wellness Committee, Capital Medical Society Foundation It was one o’clock in the morning when I heard the news of the shooting at a yoga studio in Betton. I had eaten lunch at a restaurant there a few hours earlier.

Startled and confused, I tried to figure out what happened. I began to search through websites and TV stations, fearing that someone I knew could be hurt. I initially did not believe the news when I heard that Dr. Nancy Van Vessem—my colleague and friend of over 20 years—had lost her life in the attack. As time passed, my denial broke, and reality began to set in.

How do we protect ourselves, as much as possible, from the malicious intent of the shooter, whose goal was to inflict pain and suffering on the victims, their families and loved ones? We all react to loss and tragedy in similar ways, and in different ways too. Our responses are often driven by our own individual and collective experiences. Loss can cause us to feel helpless to control the world around us, and helpless to control our own emotions. We may experience shock and disbelief, anger and rage, bewilderment and frustration, sadness and grief. We may feel the impulse to retaliate. Loss can reactivate thoughts and feelings associated with earlier losses, and with past traumatic experiences. Loss can reactivate feelings of anxiety, and depression, and grief.

I had known Nancy since she started working as an Internist with Capital I too am feeling the pangs of grief. When Health Plan in 1994. PREPARING FOR 2019 The Board of Governors met in September to review the Strategic Goals of the medical society over the past year and to develop goals for 2019. Please let us know if you are willing to help us accomplish any of these goals by serving on a committee or serving in another capacity. One of our major goals is to continue to help better connect the medical community. If you are interested in assisting in fulfilling these goals by serving on one of the following committees or service opportunities, please, get in touch with Pam Irwin at pirwin@capmed.org.

EDUCATE - CME Committee - to supervise the selection and review of all CMEs offered, as well as selection of other educational programs that would benefit the membership.

ENGAGE - Membership Committee - to investigate applicants for membership as indicated by Chapter 1 of the CMS Bylaws and make appropriate recommendations to the Society.

- Social Events Committee - to plan events that will help bind the medical community and their families to strengthen relationships and communication for the ultimate benefit of the patient.

LEAD - Physician Leadership Committee promote physician leadership and engagement in a variety of settings. This includes physicians employed by physicians employed by hospitals, health systems, health plans, and government; physicians in private practice and small group setting and physicians; residents, and medical students in academic and medical education programs.

ADVOCATE - Legislative Resource Committee - educate and inform CMS physicians, policy makers and the public on issues the public’s health, patient care, and the practice of medicine.

- Scholarship Committee - award scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice medicine upon completion of their residencies.

- Physician Wellness Committee collaborate with community partners to enhance physician wellness.

THE LOOPERS - A TRAVELOGUE THAT WILL BE MORE FUN THAN SCIENCE FICTION

By Karl Hempel, M.D. Some of you have heard of a science fiction thriller called “Looper” that takes place in a future society, where time-travel exists, but its only available to those with the means to pay for it on the black market.

When the mob wants to eliminate someone, it sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a “looper” lies in wait to finish the job.

You may not be familiar with “Loopers” who travel in real time on one of life’s greatest adventures.

For years, my wife Mackie and I have contemplated taking a trip around the eastern United States in our boat named the Endorphin Voyager. We have decided we will take this trip in 2019. We wanted to take this trip while we are healthy. I do not want to retire any time soon so I figured I would just take a sabbatical for 1 year starting January 1, 2019. I made provisions for my patients to be well cared for during my absence.

Now a word about the trip we are excited to experience. It is called America’s Great Loop.

There are several hundred boaters that take this trip every year. There is even an America’s Great Loop Cruiser’s Association for those people who share a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the boating America’s Great Loop. We have met many of them on our cruises to the Bahamas over the past 10 years.

Everyone we talk to who has completed the loop say it is one of the most wonderful trips they have ever taken.

It is about 5,000 miles long and goes counter clockwise in a circle from Sandestin, Florida down the west coast to Key West and then up the East Coast of the United States and then into Canada.

cruise over to the Great Lakes which are supposed to be a beautiful cruising ground. The last portion of our trip goes through Chicago and down the Mississippi and the Tenn-Tom rivers and coming out Mobile Bay taking the intracoastal back to Sandestin. “Loopers” can start the Great Loop from anywhere on the route. The place you start dictates where you begin. For example, since we are starting in January, we decided it would be best not to start in Chicago. We don’t have to go counter-clockwise, but it will keep us from going against the current on inland rivers.

We’ll see parts of U.S. and Canada on this trip and will go through at least 15 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, which may include Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Quebec, Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.

I plan on having a blog documenting our trip and staying in touch with family, friends, and anyone who may be interested in following our adventures. As soon as I decide whether to use Google or Wordpress, I’ll ask the CMS staff to include it in Cap Scan.

MY ENCOUNTER WITH LEONARD BERNSTEIN

By Frank Skilling, M.D. This summer marked the onehundredth anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, arguably one of the greatest conductors and composers of the last century. A true prodigy, Bernstein became famous over night when he stepped in for the ailing Bruno Walter and conducted the New York Philharmonic when he was twenty-six. Bernstein went on to become the principal conductor and music director of the Philharmonic, but he was probably best known for his forays into popular music, and West Side Story has remained his most famous work for sixty years.

Thinking that he was going to see us and offer the extra tickets to us, I anticipated thanking him, but he merely strolled up to one of the ushers and nodded his assent to release the tickets. With that he crushed out his cigarette and stepped back into the side door. A few minutes later the woman in the ticket booth strolled outside with a handful of tickets, which she began to distribute in order to those waiting in line. As I inched forward, I realized that she was running out of tickets, and by the time I had advanced there were three people in front of me who wanted one.

The woman shrugged and said that this was the last one, which she held up. Immediately, the four of us surged forward, and, fortunately, I was the tallest. Two women were grabbing at the upheld ticket, and I realized that if I was going to get it I was going to have to move quickly. I reached over the group, snatched the ticket upwards and in a downward sweep shoved it into the breast pocket of my sport coat.

Bernstein also composed “serious” music including “Kaddish” and “Candide.” He was deeply moved by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and, for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., he composed its premiere piece, “Mass.” I was a senior medical student at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, and I signed up for an elective at the U.S. Navy’s National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland in the fall of 1971. I was single and, outside of a busy surgical and clinical schedule on the Ear, Nose and Throat ward, I had enough free time to visit Georgetown and take in some of the cultural events in the capital. When I learned that the premiere of Mass was being held at the Kennedy Center, I decided to take a chance and see if I could get an unclaimed ticket by standing in line at the box office.

On the afternoon of the performance I drove my Volkswagen Beetle to the Kennedy Center and parked in the massive garage. When I arrived at the box office about thirty minutes before the performance, there was a line of intended patrons who had the same idea that I did, so I got in line behind several women to wait. About fifteen minutes before the curtain time, I saw a figure step out of a side door to look at the line.

Everyone looked around, but no one had seen me grab it. We looked at each other and separated. After a few minutes of bemused expressions, the others disappeared. I wandered away from the entrance to the Kennedy Center and then wandered back in time to use my ticket, courtesy of Leonard Bernstein, to attend the performance. It was the first and last time I saw him in person, and I never did get to thank him for the ticket, but I have seen several of his musicals since then including the Turner Classic Movie revival of West Side Story this summer. I enjoyed it even more than I did when I first saw it with my parents in 1961 at the Miami Beach Theater. (By the way, West Side Story is better than Mass, and it’s certainly performed more often.)

In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to health care for the underserved. In 2018, CMSF awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to Elder Care for their In-Home Services Program, Alzheimer’s Project for caregiver support resources, and Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide clients who have vision loss with the aids needed to manage their health and medical care independently.
