Dear Capital Medical Society Members, Capital Medical Society Foundation is pleased to launch its new Physician Wellness Program designed to help you take care of yourself. The CMSF Physician Wellness Program (PWP) features, among other benefits, confidential, convenient, cost-free access to professional wellness coaching for active and associate physician members.

Overview Being a physician isn’t easy. Burnout levels are rising. Many of the issues you face can take their toll. Whatever the issue, the PWP services provide a safe harbor for you to address normal life difficulties and the challenges of a medical career, overcome trauma, receive wellness coaching on managing stress, and help you reclaim satisfaction in your career and personal life. You deserve it.

How it Works CMSF provides up to 6 sessions with a licensed psychologist per year for free as a benefit to Active and Associate CMS physician members.

Funding for the first year of this program has been generously provided through a grant from MagMutual Foundation.

CMS contracts with independent, doctorate-level psychologists who have been evaluated by the volunteer CMSF Physician Wellness Committee members. *Confidential appointments are selfreferred and physician-initiated with no medical diagnoses, no insurance billing, and no electronic records. There is no identification to CMSF, CMS employees, or any other party (unless required by law). Psychologist providers bill CMSF directly with de-identified data.

• Call the psychology practice’s phone number.

Identify yourself as a CMS ACTIVE or Associate member and ask them to call you to schedule an appointment for wellness coaching. Indicate any preferences for day of the week or time of day.

• Psychologists will respond to physician requests for wellness coaching services with twentyfour (24) hours of an inquiry.

• Appointments will be scheduled within one (1) week, unless otherwise requested by the physician.

• Services do not include wellness coaching for relatives of a member unless the member is present and participates in the coaching session as the primary client.

• Private, comfortable psychologist offices offer the opportunity to use private entrances or screened arrival and departure.

• Other resources are available on the Capital Medical Society website at http://capmed.org/ resources/physician-wellness/ or by calling Pam Irwin at 850-877-9018.

Our hope is that Capital Medical Society physicians will seek help as a normal response to acute and chronic stress rather than just “powering through.”

PROFESSIONAL NOTES Dr. Wayne Batchelor was recently published in JAMA Cardiology. His original investigation entitled, “Outcomes in Women and Minorities Compared with White Men 1 Year After Everolimus-Eluting Stent Implantation� reports the insights and results from the pooled PLATINUM Diversity and PROMUS Element Plus Post-Approval Studies. This is the largest national study of its kind to report on coronary stent outcomes in women and minorities. Thank you Dr. Batchelor for your commitment to helping close the research gap in these previously underrepresented groups. Dr. Ron Saff received the prestigious Elmore Bryant Award from the Jackson County NAACP on November 3, 2017 for his efforts in helping to block an injection well that Waste Management planned to dig, which would have poisoned the drinking water of a minority community outside of Marianna.

PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

By Ron Saff, M.D. Physicians for Social Responsibility’s parent organization won the Nobel Peace Prize. The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said the award had been made in recognition of the group’s work “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition.”

Local PSR chapter members Drs. Lonnie Draper, Ray Bellamy, Howard Kessler, and Ron Saff are beaming with pride. This is the second time that PSR has won the prestigious award.

There are far too many nuclear weapons approximately 22,000 are in existence, and they are much more deadly than the ones that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even a small nuclear war could cause drops in global surface temperature, which combined with firestorms and radioactive and toxic contamination could take farmland out of production, resulting in starvation for billions. Dr.

Draper has lectured to many local Rotary groups on the dangers of nuclear weapons and points out that hospitals are just not equipped to handle the overwhelming amount of burns, crush injuries, and radiation sickness that could result from nuclear warfare.

The Florida Medical Association urges physicians to become stewards of the environment. Local PSR doctors are also working for legislation that would mandate testing for lead in school drinking water, ban fracking, promote renewable energy, and protect against antibiotic over-usage. The group is very politically active and frequently speaks to our Florida legislators. New members are welcome.

TAKE YOUR OXYGEN FIRST

By Greg Perry, M.D. Evalynn Pearl moved with her mother and husband to Tallahassee from Houston about two years ago. Evalynn’s mother, La Verne Montgomery, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia about three years prior to their move.

Evalynn wasn’t comfortable with the care her mother received at two assisted living facilities in the Houston area so she was determined to care for her at home in Tallahassee. She researched local resources and signed her mom up for Elder Day Stay. This was really helpful, but caregiving remained challenging. One of the Elder Day Stay staff members told Evalynn about Alzheimer’s Project. She felt like she had been handed a lifeline.

by Meals on Wheels and participates in a wide array of activities including exercise and music therapy.

Respite locations also have caregiver support groups.

Alzheimer’s Project also offers in-home respite care with trained AmeriCorps volunteers. Counseling is available.

Evalynn’s life has changed a lot since she and her mother were both professional seamstresses in California. They sewed costumes for stars like Jackie Gleason and Carol Burnett. She learned through the Powerful Tools course that many caregivers are already grieving while caring for their loved one with dementia. Knowing that others were feeling the same way provided comfort. Through her involvement with Alzheimer’s Project, she has been able to find a balance of caring for herself and her mother. Evalynn has had such a great experience that she is passionate about sharing the good news of Alzheimer’s Project with others.

Alzheimer’s is the most common dementia. It is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. 47 million people worldwide are affected by dementia. An estimated 4.5 million people in the United States were living with Alzheimer’s in 2011.

DEAN’S CORNER STUDENTS WE SUPPORT TODAY MAY BE OUR PARTNERS TOMORROW

By Sandeep Rahangdale, M.D., Dean, FSU College of Medicine Tallahassee Regional Campus I moved from Melbourne to Tallahassee in 2002 for the opportunity to work with Dr. Orson Smith at Southern Medical Group, as well as to teach at the FSU College of Medicine. Dr. Smith, my mentor in medicine here in Tallahassee, not only helped build SMG but also built the world-class cardiac services program at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by initially hand-picking cardiology and internal medicine graduates from Emory University.

On a much smaller scale over the past 15 years, I have strived to help recruit internal medicine physicians to solve a manpower need in Tallahassee. Now, as dean of the College of Medicine’s Tallahassee Regional Campus, my goal is to help young physicians-to-be see the many opportunities to succeed in primary care, rural medicine and specialist care for underserved populations here in North Florida and South Georgia.

Many of our students come to us with deep regional roots.

In fact, one of Orson’s granddaughters is a second-year student and will be joining the Thomasville site of the Tallahassee Regional Campus for her third and fourth years of medical school. Drs. Gunter, Currieo and Alexander have family in the College of Medicine’s first-year class.

I hope I can provide the inspiration and guidance to help

many more North Floridians train and set up shop as our colleagues in this area.

To help ensure their financial opportunity, I trust that the Capital Medical Society can continue to support FSU student scholarships through the CMS Auction and other endeavors. So many FSU students have become CMS members, our medical partners and referring physicians that – to paraphrase the incomparable pediatrician Frank Walker – “the best return on money our medical community can get is by helping these students.” Not just those we know, but also those we’ve never met – including those who come from, and wish to serve in, underserved communities.

As Dr. Walker has said: “When thinking of where to practice after residency, they will surely remember not just the exemplary teaching given by our community preceptors, but also the financial help we’ve given them along the way.”

By Ida Thompson, CMS Alliance President We have had a very successful Fall with the first ever CMSA Week September 26-28. We raised over $3,500 thanks to our generous sponsors, SunTrust Bank and J. McLaughlin clothing as well as our wonderful attendees at the Austrian Wine Tasting. Thank you everyone for participating. We were able to donate $1,000 to the Brehon Family Services (our CMSA Philanthropy for the past 3 years), $500 to the FSU College of Medicine, and $500 to CMS Foundation for the We Care Network.

PREPARING FOR 2018 The Board of Governors met in September to review the Strategic Goals of the medical society over the past year and to develop goals for 2018. One of our major goals is to continue to help better connect the medical community. If you are interested in assisting in fulfilling these goals by serving on one of the following committees or service opportunities, please, get in touch with Pam Irwin at pirwin@capmed.org.

EDUCATE - CME Committee - to supervise the selection and review of all CMEs offered, as well as selection of other educational programs that would benefit the membership.

ENGAGE - Membership Committee - to investigate applicants for membership as indicated by Chapter 1 of the CMS Bylaws and make appropriate recommendations to the Society.

ADVOCATE - Legislative Resource Committee - educate and inform CMS physicians, policy makers and the public on issues of public health, patient care, and the practice of medicine.

SERVE - We Care Network - participate as a donating specialty medical provider in the We Care Network.

Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $90 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2016-17, which ended June 30, 2017, more than $10.9 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $47,000 was distributed to eight medical students in 2017. ➢ Gifts to Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operation resources for Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants to area non-profits whose programs improve access to health care for the underserved. In 2017, CMSF awarded $10,000 in grants to Elder Care for their In-Home Services Program and to CMSF’s Physician Wellness Program set to launch in FY 2017-18.
