YOUR PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE 2015 FMA ANNUAL MEETING By Joshua Somerset, M.D., CMS President

Capital Medical Society sent ten local delegates to the 2015 FMA Annual Meeting in Orlando from July 31st-August 2nd. Our delegates comprised of an experienced group of CMS members: Drs. Christie Alexander, John Bailey, Michael Forsthoefel, Shakra Junejo, Alma Littles, John Mahoney, Alfredo Paredes, Hugh VanLandingham, Gary Winchester, and myself. Executive Director, Pam Wilson, and Communications and Events Coordinator, Shannon Boyle, were also important team members. The whole crux of the meeting was for Florida physicians and other healthcare representatives to identify and prioritize the biggest challenges to the practice of medicine. These ideas or solutions must be packaged into “resolutions” to direct the FMA on the legislative agenda for the upcoming year. It was difficult to describe the process without sounding tedious.

There were meetings, pre-meetings, Caucuses, Reference Committees, and finally the House of Delegates. The big picture is that resolutions get debated, amended, and wordsmithed until the final product resembles a shell of its former self. While I have never made sausage, one can imagine the grinding of a lot of parts to make the final product.

CMS delegates were well represented in every step of the process. Dr. Michael Forsthoefel chaired Reference Committee II, Finance and Administration. Dr. Christie Alexander was on the panel of Reference Committee III, Legislation. Dr. John Katopodis sits on the FMA Board of Governors (newly elected
