THE WE CARE NETWORK - STILL SOWING HOPE 30 YEARS LATER By Rohan Joseph, M.D., FACS, Donating We Care Network Provider and Capital Medical Society Foundation, Inc. Board Director Hope - it is the light that shines through our collective and individual darkness. Hope - it is the engine that moves humanity forward in war, during pandemics, pestilence, and natural disasters. Hope - that a better season is before us and that all is not lost. Hope also drives each and every one of us in our professional and personal lives. Hope, that, perhaps, in making the correct choices and decisions today, we will harvest a fruit of good results for our patients and our families.

up through the We Care Network for further biochemical work up and imaging that resulted in a diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, for which robotic surgery was scheduled. The competent and caring staff at the We Care Network helped both patients navigate the different doctors’ visits, tests, and surgery with ease. Through the generosity of the We Care Network, both patients underwent successful surgery at the HCA Florida Capital Hospital. Both patients were cured of their illnesses and were grateful to have normalcy returned to their lives.

All physicians understand the importance of hope when a patient is faced with a new diagnosis of an acute life-threatening or chronic illness. However, that hope becomes more elusive when our patients do not have access to funds or medical insurance to help pay for life-saving care. As a surgeon, two particular patients that I have taken care of come to mind. The first, a healthy man in his early fifties who had noticed a tumor growing on his abdominal wall for over six months. He had lost his job a year prior and did not have health insurance as a result. He was referred to me for surgery through the We Care Network for an abdominal wall sarcoma after donated services by the radiology and pathology specialists completed the outpatient workup. The second patient is a young, employed woman in her twenties who could not afford health insurance. She was admitted to the hospital for a hypertensive crisis. She was worked up and found to have hypercortisolism and a right adrenal tumor. After her discharge, I was able to get her set

As a result, the patients mentioned above, along with countless other patients and their families, can have hope for their tomorrow through the We Care Network staying true to its mission over the last 30 years. Since its inception, the We Care Network has documented $124 million in donated medical and dental care. Indeed, this is no small feat and gives us much to be thankful and proud of. The program continues to be a beacon, shining hope brightly into the lives of those who find themselves in a health crisis without the access to care that most of us reading this article take for granted and may never have to worry about. I wish the We Care Network continued success as it serves those most vulnerable amongst us to provide healthcare and hope!
