PROFESSIONAL NOTES Dr. Steve Currieo had the honor of hooding his son, Dr. Andrew Currieo at the FSU College of Medicine’s Commencement Ceremony on May 16, 2021.

Dr. Alma Littles delivered the Commencement address for the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Class of 2021 on May 16, 2021.

President Fuchs and Dean Koch welcomed her back to her Alma Mater for this special occasion.

Dr. John Mahoney was recognized as the 2020 Board Member of the Year by Elder Care Services, Inc. This recognition is in appreciation for his continued advocacy for seniors in our community.

Dr. Pareshkumar Patel received the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology (FLASCO) 2021 Advocate of the Year Award. The recognition was announced at the FLASCO Business of Oncology Summit & Spring Session held on April 20, 2021 in Kissimmee, FL. “Dr. Patel has served FLASCO in so many ways it would be impossible to begin to list them all,” said FLASCO President Dr. Luis E. Raez in presenting the award. “His tireless efforts are greatly appreciated.” Dr. Patel has served as FLASCO Legislative Committee Chair since 2018. In this leadership role he helps foster relationships with legislators and key policy makers, advocating on behalf of cancer patients and providers and serving as an expert resource on oncology issues.

“In addition to caring for patients at our Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) clinic locations in Tallahassee, Dr. Patel works tirelessly to ensure access to cancer care throughout Florida and across the U.S. through numerous advocacy efforts,” said FCS Chief Executive Officer Nathan H. Walcker. FCS President & Managing Physician Dr. Lucio Gordan said, “Dr. Patel has been steadfast in his efforts on behalf of cancer patients and community oncology providers. This recognition by his peers is well deserved.”

Dr. Brence Sell was recently promoted to President Elect of the 2021-2022 Florida Society of Anesthesiologists’ Board of Directors.

Capital Medical Society Executive Director Pam Irwin hosted an orientation luncheon for new Family Medicine, General Surgery, and Internal Medicine Residents on June 16, 2021 at the TMH Family Residency Program. Pam shared the importance of becoming involved in organized medicine at the local level. She encouraged the new residents to join CMS and to grow their understanding of legislation impacting the practice of medicine, to attend CMS events, CMEs, and social activities to grow their understanding of the local medical community, the practice of medicine and to build friendships. CMS PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIP CHECK TO FSU COLLEGE OF MEDICINE TALLAHASSEE REGIONAL CAMPUS Dr. Rohan Joseph, CMS President, and Pam Irwin, CMS Executive Director, met with incoming third-year medical students from the FSU College of Medicine Tallahassee Regional Campus on June 1, 2021, for a brief introduction to the Capital Medical Society and to share the importance of being engaged in organized medicine. Dr. Joseph and Ms. Irwin also presented a $2,000 check to Dr. Sandeep Rahangdale, Dean of the FSU College of Medicine Tallahassee Regional Campus, to fund scholarships for third and fourth-year medical students on that campus.

SIMPLER TIMES

MOVIN’ MADE EASIER

By Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP (“Pedro”) Frequent moves were not unusual for farm families back in the 1940’s. There was always hope of a better year, a better home, better shoes and a better crop.

In the mid 1940’s Dad and the family, including Pedro, upped and moved to the north end of Colquitt County, but we still considered ourselves Southerners. This house had some indoor plumbing. It was amazing how that worked and the world was sure getting smarter. However, this place needed a whole lot of attention to make it look halfway decent and we upped and took it on ourselves to do that.

Dad (Millard) had noticed that with this move Pedro was getting down in the dumps. He asked Dillard, his brother, to take Pedro fishing to get Pedro’s mind on other things.

Dillard and I then high tailed it to Reedy Creek to do some jug fishing. The fish were biting so good we had to hide behind the tree to bait our hooks. We filled a #3 washtub plum full of fish. Dillard at the end of the day decided to drop by and give his brother Willard a mess of fish. After Dillard and I left Willard’s and headed home to Millards, Willard strung up his fish and had his picture taken.

The next day Willard’s picture came out in the Moultrie Observer holding the fish Dillard and I caught. The Observer had asked Willard in an interview where the fish were biting and he pointed to his upper lip and said, “Right here.”

One time we were feelin’ down and out and Dad recognized this. He scraped together some money, headed into town and picked up a basket of apples, hopin’ we’d all perk up. We thought Christmas had come early and that we were richer than we were. Pedro reached for one of them apples and bit into it faster than a rooster after a Junebug.

Dad quickly said, “Pedro, be careful and lookout for them worms.” Pedro responded, “When I eat my apples, them worms have to look after themselves.”

Even though times were sometimes tough, we kept our hopes up and for a long time Pedro kept hopin’ for that bicycle. He was willing to give up his Easter outfit if only he could get that bike. Pedro thought he might be getting’ closer when he overheard Mama and Daddy talkin’. Dad told Mama that Pedro had been askin, beggin’, and prayin’ for a bike for a mighty long time and he asked Mama if she thought a bicycle might improve Pedro’s behavior. Mama thought and said, “No, but it might spread it over a wider area.”

We finally got settled in with this new move and the nearest neighbor was a long way off. During the summers we had to learn to occupy ourselves. I learned early not to complain of being bored or Dad would make me sweep the yard, wash the porch, dip the dog, haul some water, tote some wood, and weed the fields.

There was another share-cropper family down the road about 1 ½ miles and they had a boy about my age. I became close to him, played with him, picked cotton with him, and he taught me to ham-bone and I taught him to buck dance.

He was black and he was my friend.

One day Dillard picked up a couple of balloons downtown – one was for me and one was for my friend. One balloon was black and one was white. This was a new type of balloon and would rise and had something inside called helium. My friend was excited and I was excited. In the excitement I let go of my balloon and it started rising higher and higher until it disappeared. My balloon had risen in the clouds. My friend looked at Uncle Dillard and asked, “Will my balloon rise as high as that white balloon?” Dillard replied, “It’s not the color of the balloon that makes it rise, it’s the stuff inside.” I believed my friend had the right stuff inside. I wished I could now find him, I don’t know where he had disappeared to but I’m sure he has risen above the clouds.

Repeated moving was hard on us kids. However, concerned relatives and the warm reception from new good friends made it easier. Most of these relatives and friends from earlier years have gone off in different directions and some already have passed on. They now are becoming the memories from which I draw strength when I reflect back on “Simpler Times.”

Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Executive Director Pam Irwin presented a $5,000 check to Elder Care Services CEO/President Jocelyne Fliger and Communications and Development Coordinator Moriah Iglesias on June 17, 2021.

The grant will be used to provide critical in-home services to older adults, as well as, transportation to doctors and other healthcare providers.

On June 17, 2021, the Lighthouse of the Big Bend’s Kim Galban-Countryman and Debara Jump were presented a $5,000 grant from the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Executive Director Pam Irwin to purchase aids for their clients with vision loss.

The Impact of Private Support: The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $112.3 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2019-20, which ended June 30, 2020, more than $6.9 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $31,000 was awarded in 2020. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2021, the CMSF awarded a total of $15,000 in grants to Elder Care Services for their In-Home Services Program, the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, and to Lighthouse of the Big Bend for aids for the visually-impaired.

Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam: You can make a gift to the CMS Foundation in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone, such as a fellow physician, you hold in high esteem or has taken care of you or your family. The CMS Foundation will send an acknowledgement letter to those you memorialize and honor.
