DOCTORS AND SONS RESPOND TO TRAUMAS AND DISASTERS By Pam Wilson, CMS Executive Director “EMT’s, Dispatch, and Disaster Team Simulations, Oh My!” was a huge hit as this year’s Doctor-Son Event. The photographs tell the story of a customized stimulating and interactive evening hosted by Leon County modeled after their popular, award-winning Leon County Citizen Engagement Series. Our guests, young and old, participated in trauma response exercises in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), starting IV lines, and setting up EKGs under the guidance of local EMT’s and Major Sally Davis, Paramedic. There was plenty of enthusiastic participation in these hands-on experiences. A few needle jabs later, and most of the “dummies” were saved. In the second rotation of the evening, CMS guests learned about the Consolidated Dispatch Agency (CDA) and got to practice their observation skills in a realistic robbery attempt. How old? How big? What was he wearing? Who was that masked man? With some true team effort, our physicians and sons experienced the challenges of an incoming Category 2 Hurricane heading towards Tallahassee. Coordinating food, ice, water, media announcements, and shelters for humans and their pets seemed a bit more daunting when the adrenalin started flowing in this realistic exercise. One guest even took a call from Ron Burgundy, from the 2004 comedy “Anchorman.” Speechless, would be an understatement for her initial response! The program, which was introduced by County Administrator Vincent S. Long and CMS President Dr. J. Daniell Rackley, gave physicians and their sons an

opportunity to engage in public safety operations and view the various issues facing the community in a public safety emergency or disaster. “Public safety is one of the core functions of County government. The Public Safety Complex is a gamechanging project that brings life-saving services to one centralized location,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “This session will give Capital Medical Society the opportunity to gain greater insight into the integrated resources and techniques utilized by EMS, CDA, and Emergency Management.” A huge thank you to Leon County’s staff, especially Shington Lamy, for coordinating such a special evening for Capital Medical Society. Sponsor SunTrust Private Wealth Management provided wonderful backpacks and first aid kits and came to the “rescue” when we had a last minute food shortage. Sponsor Hancock Bank provided a photographer to capture some wonderful photos of the event with a great backdrop of the EMS truck. Their table was filled with kid-friendly giveaways. Patrick Khairallah, son of Dr. Farhat Khairallah was the happy winner of the Hancock Bank drawing for a toy EMS truck. We also had entertainment and photo opportunities from the Chick-fil-A Doctor Cow and the Leon the Lifesaver ambulance. The jury is out on how many of these young guests will be inspired to pursue a career in the field of public safety or medicine, but for one night, they rose to the occasion and experienced the everyday challenges of keeping our community safe.
