Your new Executive Director is most likely a familiar face as she has more than 10 years of experience in the Tallahassee medical community. Pam Wilson took the helm on May 12th and is quickly learning the ins and outs of the Capital Medical Society.

Ms. Wilson currently serves as the Community Service Director on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Tallahassee. She is also a past member of the PAM WILSON For those of you who don’t know her, Ms. Association of Fundraising Professionals, Wilson’s background includes fundraising, the Economic Club of Florida, and event planning, management, marketing, Toastmasters International. She has participated in several mission trips in the and communications.

U.S., Nicaragua, and Africa.

Ms. Wilson has worked in various health care positions, which include: Development Officer at Westminster Retirement Communities Foundation, where she was instrumental in fundraising for the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning; Executive Director and Chief Development Officer of the Big Bend Hospice Foundation, where she raised monies to complete the Capital Campaign to renovate the Margaret Z. Dozier Hospice House and build the Jean McCully Family House; and most recently, Senior Development Officer at the Florida State University College of Medicine Foundation, where she secured gift attributions in excess of $4,000,000 for a twoyear period.

Ms. Wilson holds a bachelor’s degree in German from the University of Kentucky.

She is married and has two grown sons.

One serves in the U.S. Army and the other is a campus ministry intern at the College of Charleston.

Ms. Wilson’s hit-the-ground running approach makes this an exciting time for Capital Medical Society.

“NO PROBLEM”

I have just, rather quietly as should suit, celebrated my 80th birthday. For your information, I feel little different, if not indifferent. I am, more or less, still chasing my wife, and don’t think she’s running any slower for my sake. On the other hand, and quite unexpectedly, I thought I might find myself “wiser,” but alas, this does not seem apparent to anyone, including myself. I am glad to say that my memory remains as good as any teenager’s, which means I still almost invariably show up on time and clothed. I have all of my teeth, although they are a bit long, and clearly (just within the past couple of years, too) seem to capture fragments of foodstuffs that require more effort to be rid of than once upon a time. On which subject, not to be neglected by any of you, no matter what your age, my capacity for flossing is uncompromised, which proves that I yet possess my finer manipulative capacities. Oh, and while I am “boasting,” let me note that I can eat anything, including all the finer hot sauces, “Crystal” remaining the preferred, not to leave out a nice jalapeno sandwich. My bowels move, and although there is a little hesitancy now and again my prostate seems, if somewhat flush, happy.

I look at it this way, too: I have a long way to go before I catch Nelson Kraeft, even though by my calculation, multiplying 2piR by the distance from the earth to the sun, I have traveled some 47,020,800,000 miles. This does not even count those miles travelled daily as a result of the earth’s rotation which, at latitude about 30N would represent something like 18,000 miles each day, which is roughly another 525,000,000 miles.

Then, of course, there are all those miles going back and forth to Publix and Lowes to buy food and another screwdriver.

Anyway, when I am Nelson’s age he will be 114; probably still going strong, and for longevity alone will deserve yet another I.B. Harrison Award.

In other words, “no problem,” as they invariably, and so curiously say when in a restaurant you ask the waiter for a simple menu. I suppose it means that if there were no menu, then ipso facto giving you one would, in fact, be a problem.

It boils down to this: none of us want to be a “problem.”

The thing we least want, I think, when we age is to become a problem, burdening someone else (except all of us health care professionals, who after all get paid to be burdened a bit). As an example, I always think of that radio announcement I have heard more than once, when the weather person is predicting that the temperature that night will drop into the upper thirties that “you should remember to bring the elderly in.” They are, you know, so easily forgotten. You might put them outdoors in the late afternoon, on some sort of bench, to enjoy a last ray of sun, and then busy, as we all are, easily forget them. How horrible to awaken in the night, say at 3AM, and suddenly remember that old Grannie is still outside frozen to her bench and covered with frost. That is just one of the milder burdens, of course, which one does not want to impose on their loving caregivers. Well, no problem, it happens only rarely, surely.

I have been, let me add along these very lines, excellent, so far, about coming in out of the rain. Lynn has never forgotten me, and left me out of doors all night, because so far I know to come in at least by five PM and have my martini. I have, however, noticed that I seem to be having a bit more trouble finding the ketchup in the fridge, and that every now and then, reverting to those “simpler times” made famous by Charlie Williams, I do call it the “icebox.” Interestingly, I have never lost the bottle of Kirkland’s vodka; but that may be simply because it almost fills the freezer, and I perfectly well know where the freezer is.

No problem!

But enough of me! This being a serious medical journal, which someone just the other day told me they actually read (which intimidates me just a bit, since I only write here because I think no one reads it). Let me be as serious as age should be. Let me discuss Geriatric medicine, on which I am glad to elaborate regarding because I know almost nothing about it.

First of all, the term “geriatrics” derives from the Greek geras (old age) and iatros (Doctor). I would decline both for you, but admit to having forgotten all my Greek, or maybe never knew any anyway, I forget. In any event, the Geriatrician is, clearly, an “old age doctor.” I beg you to note the difference between “geriatrics” and “gerontology,” which is the study of the aging process itself. It can be said that the term “geriatrics” was first mentioned by the ancient Indian medical method known as the Ayurveda, about 1500BC, even though our modern day practice of not leaving the aged out overnight in the cold was not mentioned. The term “geria,” of course, is notably very close to the Sanskrit “jara,” if you want to believe it.

In any case, two and a half millennia later the first book to offer actual instruction in the care of the aged was The Canon of Medicine written by Avicenna in 1025, which made that year a great one for the elderly. He said that “old folks needed plenty of sleep,” that their bodies should be anointed with oil, and that they should walk around. This hit me squarely between the eyes, and made me come to terms with my fore score years, for my wife, only a few months ago began telling me that my skin was awfully dry, and insisting that I should rub my arms and feet and things with some sort of refined WD40. Being asymptomatic…i.e. not itchy…I would probably prefer it in my titanium joints, but cannot find a convenient point of insertion. On the other hand, who is to dispute either Avicenna or my wife, so I am vaguely anointing myself now and again.

Not to leave out the Arabs, and just so you can bring him up at your local cocktail party, there is by all means Ishaq Ibn Hunayn (died 910AD) who wrote the Treatise on Drugs for Forgetfulness. If you can remember his name, you don’t need to read it or take the drug.

Finally, in 1849, George Day published the Diseases of Advanced Life and thereafter the first “modern” geriatric hospital was founded in, you must remember this, Serbia in 1881 by Dr. Laza Lazarevic. The term “geriatrics” was proposed by Dr. Ignatz Lea Nascher in 1909, and don’t forget this either, Dr. Marjorie Warren is the “Mother” of Geriatrics.

So there we have it; no problema. But, actually, what have we?

Well, let’s look at the positive side: for example, I rejoice, to 6

some modest degree, that I am still much too young to be asked that age-old question the pre and post-centenarian is invariably asked: namely, “to what, your esteemed decrepitude, do you owe your admirable longevity?” I am myself still too wet behind the ears and watery of brain to even think on the subject, which, come to think of it, has invariably disappointed me in the answers so usually given by the extreme elderly. It seems to me these are very commonly based on the brand of snuff used for the past forty years; or most recently by the oldest human being in the whole world, the very handsome Japanese lady, Mrs. Okawa, age 116, who ascribes her escape from an early fate as due to eating sushi and sleep. She says nothing about “walking around.” But let me tell you this: the Japanese restaurant “Osaka” has an absolutely brilliant sushi offering they call “The Dirty Old Man.” It is not on the menu, but we cognoscenti members of “The Dirty Old Man Club” know to ask for it because our wives have told us to. Try it, and then go home and take a nice nap before you go to sleep for the night.

As I said earlier, where am I? One does forget, after all. Oh yes, what are my own early juvenile recommendations for longevity? I am embarrassed that they are so prosaic; nothing about snuff or eating an apple a day or walking about while sleeping.

Most importantly you must get your DNA in good order, arranging it just so, perhaps with some advice from Dr. Parsley.

Second, you should contrive to live, as Hippocrates himself suggested, in a pleasant place with good air and a haphazard of clouds floating about in an otherwise blue sky. Third, you should have work that you love, and a love to love. I think you should weigh every day, and take thoughtful action if you are even a few pounds more than you want to be; and please don’t make the judgment based on whether or not your clothes feel tight. Don’t smoke, drink too much, fool around with drugs and wickedness, take a little exercise (if you like it) and don’t over indulge in dirty old men (or women, if such exist). And don’t forget not to sunbathe or leave yourself out all night when it’s freezing.

And so you will live happily ever after, and believing in Heaven probably go there.
