2019 CELEBRATION AWARDS DINNER

By Shannon Boyle, CMS Communications and Events Coordinator The eighteenth annual Celebration Awards Dinner honored Dr. Andrew Wong and Dr. John Katopodis. The event was held in honor of Doctors’ Day on March 28th at the FSU University Center Club. There was a room full of proud supporters of the award winners. Dr. Andrew Wong was awarded the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, and Dr. John Katopodis was awarded the Outstanding Physician Award. Our CMS President, Dr. Maribel Lockwood, did a great job emceeing the event.

Dr. Lockwood thanked the Celebration Awards Dinner Steering Committee and the Capital Medical Society staff for their hard work in organizing and coordinating this event.

Timothy Paulk, Dr. Randy Reese, Dr. Christopher Rumana, Dr. L. Steve Sarbeck, Dr. William Simmons, Dr. Larry Taylor, and Dr. Charles Williams.

We wish them well in their retirement.

A moment of silence was held to honor several physicians who passed away this past year: Dr. Richard Dozier, Sr., Dr. William “Bill” Long, Dr. John Craig Peterson, Dr. William Shipman, Dr. J. Richard Taylor, and Dr. Nancy Van Vessem.

Dr. Lockwood thanked the referring and donating providers in the We Care Network. She noted that We Care Network donating providers donated more than $8 million in care last year and a cumulative total of more than $98 million in the last 27 years.

Dr. Lockwood shared a brief history of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. The criteria for the award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: compassion, service, respect, wisdom and integrity. She asked all past recipients of this award to stand and be recognized. Dr. Andrew Wong joined these esteemed physicians, as well as those who could not attend, as the 2019 recipient of this prestigious award.

and has always stepped up to tackle various problems at all levels. He organized a group of UF grads to put a program together for the UF, Jacksonville, and Orlando residencies to teach about private practice.

He helped organize a rotation for the UF Chief Residents to rotate up here. He is a communication instructor for the AAOS. He is now on the TMH Board of Directors.

He is a worker, not a talker or a CV padder.

I could go on and on with accolades. I could tell you stories of all the disasters we’ve stumbled through in our training and years of practice. I could tell some stories he wouldn’t want out there. I won’t. Andy has always been there to pitch in and help fix things and make things better for patients, colleagues, community, and the up and coming future of medicine - our students.

As orthopedists we fix things!

Not only has he been instrumental in medical education, but Andy has also worked tirelessly for his church. He has a strong faith. He’s done missionary work here and abroad. He did work in New Orleans after Katrina and has done several international mission trips. I remember one story from Africa about how they felt guilty because they were fed better than the locals as guests. I remember how he felt that teaching the local orthopedists was what he felt was so important. He stayed in touch with some of them to be a resource. He was one of the organizers of an impromptu mini residency reunion at the house of one of our co-residents who was dying of cholangiocarcinoma last year. We all spent a good part of a day with him, and I think most importantly, with his son and daughter telling them residency stories about their dad before he passed away.

So, this is Dr Andrew Wong. A great orthopedic surgeon, my partner, my colleague, and my friend. I’m proud to introduce the recipient of the 2019 I.B. Harrison Humanitarian Award.

Andy has always been a great partner to me.

He’s a great surgeon, I enjoy how he and I will team up to do really tough cases. He’s a great teacher, and a great friend. He’s a person of strong faith and isn’t afraid to discuss that with friends and patients. He has a wonderful wife - Ann - who he met on the 6th floor of Shands when he was an intern and she a nurse. They have 3 wonderful amazingly talented children that he prizes and has a close relationship with.

I’m proud to call Ann and Andy our friends.

DR. ANDREW WONG’S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH UPON RECEIVING THE I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD Ok, so I know there’s a basketball game tonight and I promised my wife not to be long winded so you can get out of here. Feel free to check scores on your phone – I’d do the same if I were sitting down there.

It means so much to be recognized by my friends, colleagues, and peers tonight, and Mark Fahey is particularly important in my life. It means a lot to have him introduce me because we trained together at Florida and he was my mentor and role model throughout residency. I’ve been so blessed to be able to practice with a good friend who I can always rely upon for help and advice.

I want to congratulate John Katopodis on his award tonight – he’s a very deserving recipient for all of the contributions he’s made to our profession. John, you’re the main event and I’m just on the undercard – thanks for letting me share this night with you.

So, I’m at my 25th high school reunion back in San Francisco several years ago and I see an old acquaintance. We’re talking and I mentioned that back then he wanted to be a dentist. He remembered that I wanted to be a doctor. After an awkward silence he blurts out “I’m a dentist” and I yell back and “I’m a doctor!” And we high five each other and give a bro hug. really sank in how fortunate I was to actually realize a goal that I set so long ago. We all know the obstacles and forks in the road that get in our way as we pursue our dreams and it really is amazing when things work out the way we hope and pray for. It’s this realization though that has always made me view my role as a doctor as a real privilege and not something to be taken for granted.

But in my singleminded pursuit of orthopedics, I have not always been available as a husband or father.

I want to publicly thank my wife Ann for loving and supporting me and allowing me to practice medicine the way I think is right – which often times eats into our free time and weekends. Without her, I wouldn’t be standing up here. She challenged me many years ago during our courtship when she told me that I reminded her of her father. He was an air force colonel and just a wonderful, kind, and honorable man. Specifically, she said that she could always count on me to do the right thing just like him. That has been the standard she set for me and honey I hope I haven’t let you down now or in the future. And I want to thank my children, Cameron and Hannah and especially Christian who was able to come tonight for understanding that this has been my calling, and time spent away from home has been invested in helping others.

There’s a bible phrase that states “to whom much is given, much will be required.”

And I want to remind all of us that in times of increasing overhead, government scrutiny and over regulation, and reduced reimbursements, we as physicians are blessed with talents, wealth and knowledge and we need to use these gifts to benefit others.

There is no other walk in life where you can go home at the end of the day and say, “I made someone’s life better today.” That is a privilege beyond compare.

This award is not just about me, but also the wonderful members of my tribe. I have been so fortunate to find others who share the belief that patients and their problems come first and they keep me grounded and motivated when I’m running out of energy.

They are my accountability group. Thank you to Brian Darsey, my first PA; Kartik Gopal who has become my right hand man and confidante; Brandi Koch, my nurse of 10 years and the real boss at work; Ashley who couldn’t be here tonight; and Shannon who has recently joined us.

John could have stopped there with his busy practice, but he showed us his leadership qualities. He quickly got involved with Florida politics, trying to protect the rights of Medicine in a world with complex influences.

The next speaker will give more details of his work with the FMA. As head of FLAMPAC, he raised funds statewide for local and state elections to make sure Florida physicians causes were wellrepresented by elected officials, balancing and overcoming the influence of lawyers in these elections. I am sure most of you here know when election cycles come around... by that phone call, text, or knock on the door from John asking for another check and contribution.

As President of the FMA, he has worked diligently to address complex problems such as physician burnout, the opioid crisis, and much more.

In conclusion, the Outstanding Physician Award is given “…for leadership efforts to improve, strengthen and promote the profession of medicine.”

It is my honor and privilege to speak to you about John Katopodis. I have known John for many years and have worked beside him at the FMA. I want to take a few minutes to describe the man I have come to know over the last 15 years.

John has held nearly every major position within the FMA including: Delegate Board of Governors Council on Legislation Chair AMA delegate PAC President FMA secretary, Vice President, President Elect, President.

John is currently the immediate past President of the FMA.

He has looked to the future to predict the evolution of new treatments and medicine.

If you are not involved with the leadership of the FMA, it’s hard to describe the amount of time and energy that goes into these positions.

Being FMA President is essentially a full time job, yet John was able to perform his duties as President while handling a busy cardiology practice and a new son at the same time! I actually think John had himself cloned so he could be in 3 places at the same time. I think that year was a wee bit stressful, yet John served with grace and a true sense of duty to his fellow physicians and the patients of Florida.

He has also protected what it means to be a physician, as outside forces try to shape our practices into just another position of employment in a brutal business world.

As President you are constantly being asked for your input on the many decisions that must be made during the legislative session and throughout the year. John always seemed

to approach problems by seeking input, then making the most thoughtful decision, putting patients first while trying to preserve the practice of medicine.

One of John’s projects as President was to focus on physician burnout and physician suicide. We all know how many years of training it takes to become a physician. A doctor who quits or retires early is a waste of talent we cannot afford. Suicide is always a tragedy but when it is a physician, their entire patient population is negatively affected.

John used his position as President to encourage the FMA and county medical societies to create more access for physicians to seek help before a tragedy occurred.

The take home message is to reach out to colleagues if you sense things are not quite right. Just a small gesture of kindness and interest in their wellbeing can be life changing.

John’s influence within the FMA started long before his presidency. He has dedicated over 15 years of his life to organized medicine.

As PAC president, through fund raising and political contacts, he helped bring the PAC into the formidable organization it is today.

Early on in his career, an insurance company sent a check for the work he had done, directly to the patient. This was common practice at the time. The patient, of course, spent the money and John got nothing. This was a problem for all physicians and he started the long process of getting a bill written and after many tough battles and with the help of senator Gaetz, it is now the law that insurance companies have to pay the physician directly.

John also was a driving force behind passage of the cap on non-economic damages in medical tort cases. Unfortunately, the trial bar has been able to do a work around on that cap but it, nonetheless, shows John’s commitment to helping physicians. examples of John’s work but I have a limited amount of time for discussion tonight.

John is a physician’s Physician. We all know what that means. He is well read and respected throughout Florida. However, don’t ask him an in depth question on cardiology unless you have an extra 20 minutes! I remember asking him why elite basketball players seem to have an increased risk of sudden cardiac death and I got a 20 minute, off the cuff dissertation, with references!

John your love of medicine is infectious and it underscores your desire to share it with others. Don’t ever lose that quality.

There was a time when physicians, between cases, would discuss a difficult procedure or challenging patient. Now it seems we spend most of our time talking about things we hate, EHR, Prior Authorizations, Insurance Denials, or the latest scope of practice expansion bill to name a few. While these problems are not solved, you have done your part as an FMA officer, to improve the practice of medicine so we can focus on patient care.

John, my dear friend, I thank you for your many years of service to the physicians and patients of our state. You are very deserving of this award. There is however, one stipulation that goes with the award, you have to remain active in organized medicine!

DR. JOHN KATOPODIS’ ACCEPTANCE SPEECH UPON RECEIVING THE OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD school acceptance letter and I will tell my children and hopefully future grandchildren about the TWO most important days of my professional life.

I can’t tell you how deeply humbled I am to be here tonight, hearing all the beautiful things my friends and colleagues said and being given this award. From the deepest parts of my heart I share with you that I am extremely grateful for this honor, I am filled with joy, and I will never forget this night.

Tonight reminds me of the day I received my acceptance letter for medical school. That was the most important day of my professional career. I remember vividly the smile on the secretary’s face as she handed me the letter, I couldn’t wait to get it in the mail so I had called to learn whether the decision had been made and when she told me it had, I quickly made the trip to the admissions office and received it from her personally. I also vividly remember my trembling hands as I opened it in the car. My brother was in the driver’s seat. It was a cloudy day in Philadelphia and cars were honking around us because the car was parked in the right of way. My heart was pounding with anticipation and I wondered as I fumbled with the envelope whether the secretary’s smile was one of compassion because I didn’t get in or whether she was happy to personally deliver the wonderful news to this 22-year-old pre-med. And my vision quickly became blurred as I read the first word, congratulations, and realized I was going to be a doctor.

I was so moved that it took me a few minutes to be able to read the rest of the letter. It was my lifelong dream come true.

Tonight has the same significance for me. My heart is pounding as I stand before you, my hands aren’t the steadiest they’ve ever been, and I’m trying to hold back my emotions. My memory of this award and tonight will be just as vivid as the day I received the medical

Thank you for trusting me with your money when I was asking you for donations to the FMA PAC and to politicians. Thank you for going out of your way to call me or run me down the hallway to offer words of encouragement and gratitude. Directly or indirectly, I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for every one of you and the rest of the members of the Capital Medical Society. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well for me, it took a village to raise a leader. We all did this together. Thank you.

And I’ll tell you a secret. I never really aspired to become FMA president. If you told me twenty or ten or five years ago that I would someday become president I would have told you that was something I didn’t want to do, I wasn’t qualified for, and that you were nuts. I went to my first FMA annual meeting as part of the Capital Medical Society delegation in 2002. The president was Dr. Robert Cline and the big issues of that year were scope of practice expansion that we prevented, major HMO reforms that passed, and prompt pay which also passed. I looked up to Dr. Cline like I looked up to my dad as a kid. I had a sense of awe and wonderment as to who he was, what he did to become president, and how he led the entire FMA and still kept practicing as a doctor. I admired him for his leadership and firmly knew that I had none of those qualifications. The idea that I would ever become that person never crossed my mind until many, many years later. I asked Dr. Cline and all the subsequent presidents, how they managed to be president and still kept practicing medicine. I got the same response every time, they all shrugged their shoulders and they all said that with some pre-planning they just did it. None of them ever questioned why they did it; it was by then in the fabric of who they were. And if you asked me the same question today, you’d get exactly the same response.

In some ways the whole thing started by accident. One of our colleagues was sued and the entire process they went through was incredibly unfair. So-called experts came in from out of state and spoke mistruths, the doctor and their attorney weren’t allowed to speak to the patient CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

or subsequent treating physicians to defend themselves, and most of the judgment went to the lawyers. And by the way, later on the FMA passed laws to prevent these bad things from happening. And after that the trial lawyers killed these laws in the Florida State Supreme Court. And now we have a much less activist court. The battle goes on…

Around the same time, I had a patient that my partners at Southern Medical Group and I had worked on for weeks at the hospital. The patient cashed the check for the payment of our services from the insurance company and bought an SUV. That was in the day that payment for out of network care was mailed directly to the patient and it was left up to us to collect it. It was a way insurance companies flogged us into submission to accept horrible contracts to stay within their networks.

And by the way, the FMA has since passed the assignment of benefits bill and those payments rightfully come straight to us.

I was really upset seeing these unjust things happening to our profession and right around that time I happened to run into Dr. Terry McCoy, longstanding Capital Medical Society member and FMA president in the year 2000. Terry asked me to raise some money to beat down a gubernatorial candidate who was very trial lawyer friendly. It was perfect timing and I raised a bunch of money for Jeb Bush. I took it down to an FMA fundraiser in Tampa where many doctors and all the FMA leadership had congregated. A few weeks later, our own Dr. Tony Weaver called me and asked me to take his position on the FMA PAC. Soon after, Dr. Karl Altenburger, then president of the PAC called me and repeated the invitation. After a lot of cajoling I joined the PAC. The rest is history.

We’ve learned that medical errors usually happen when a series of improbable events happen in a specific sequence and with inopportune timing to lead to an unfortunate outcome. My fortuitous engagement with the FMA happened in a similar fashion.

Whereas in some ways my involvement was accidental, in others it was an organic process driven by a combination of my deep, deep love of our profession, and the actions of numerous people around me who saw things in me that I never saw. Tony Weaver and Karl Altenburger saw something and pulled me in. I knew nothing about the political process at the time.

Other PAC board members and FMA staff taught me and the other newbies all about it. They encouraged us to go out and raise money and to lobby legislators; they slapped our hands and redirected us when we messed 16 CAP SCAN - A CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY PUBLICATION

up. And I’ll tell you we messed up a lot. Later on when I was elected to the FMA Board, the staff and other board members did the same. It was like participating in a fifteen years long MBA in medical association management. We learned how to read profit and loss statements and balance sheets, about management of reserve funds and pension plans, public speaking, health economics, legislation, federal and state regulatory issues, and numerous other things. The FMA has a culture where everyone is working for a greater good, and it nurtures the development of its board members and engaged physicians. The Leadership Academy was created to streamline this process and I encourage all of you to join it. Its purpose is to train future leaders, not just for the FMA but, also for our practices, local hospitals and throughout the healthcare system.

So please don’t be intimidated. Join the FMA if you aren’t already a member and get involved. You will be welcomed with open arms and nurtured. You will be greatly appreciated, just as I am tonight. And who knows, as improbable as it may sound to you, you too might end up being FMA president someday.

There are many people I wish to thank tonight. First and foremost, thanks to my wife Evi. She never once questioned whether I should leave home for a few days to go to a meeting, answer calls in the evening, or comment when I would seem to drift off into space in the middle of a conversation when an FMA related thought crossed my mind. From the first day of our marriage six years ago she unhesitatingly supported me.

She would pack up the kids to go to Orlando for board meetings, and would take care of family things in the evenings and while I wasn’t home. And circumstance had it, that for the year of my presidency, we had our newborn son Nonda. My parents had suffered some medical setbacks and moved up here temporarily living with us until we helped them find a place to stay. And that year, my dad passed away. These were all major life changes and Evi never once complained, but instead, sacrificed that year to support this dream that she shared with me, that we do whatever we could to help our noble profession. We all owe her a lot, especially me. Please help me say thank you to my dear Evi with a round of applause.

I also want to say thank you to my son Niko. Niko, even though there was so much going on around us during my year as president and I wasn’t home a lot, you got straight A’s in school. I am so proud of you for doing that.

It’s funny what perceptions our children have of us regarding what we do. One weekend Niko accompanied me to the Dade County Medical Association presidential installation. It was an opportunity to have some father-son time so we decided to make a weekend of it in Miami. We arrived late Friday night at the Miami airport and walked to the car rental complex to pick up the car. As soon as he saw the car I reserved, Niko cried out, “That’s a Chevy, is that all they got you? You’re the President, they should’ve gotten you something much better, a, a, Lamborghini or a McLaren! Dad, you’re the President. Fire them!” And that became the solution for everything he didn’t like that year. I got food poisoning, “Fire them!” Someone didn’t show up to a 7 am meeting, “Fire them!” The take out order was filled incorrectly. “Fire them!” And then when the end of my term arrived he said “You mean you won’t be able to fire anyone anymore?”

I also want to thank my partners at Southern Medical Group for working their call schedules around mine, seeing consults I couldn’t get to, covering the cath lab so I could go to meetings, or reading my echoes and EKGs last minute so I could pursue FMA related activities.

You too never once complained, you just sucked it up and pitched in. I’m deeply grateful for that.

The same applies to the SMG and TMPP staff who were constantly managing my schedule and made sure the disruptions to the practice were minimal. Thank you for doing that.

I also want to thank the doctors of the Capital Medical Society delegation to the FMA for their hard work and perseverance at the annual meetings. I’ve always been inspired by your passionate involvement at those meetings.

I invited FMA staff to join us today, and I would like you to help me say thank you to them as well. The FMA staff is collectively among the hardest working group of people I have ever met. They live and breathe FMA, and don’t hesitate to make personal sacrifices to support our profession. I can’t in just a few minutes tell you all they do for us other than to say that they are incredible people and we all owe them a lot. Representing the FMA tonight are Matt Crowley, Kristi Jones, Donna Rigo, and Brittany Jackson. Please help me say thank you with a round of applause.

I also wish to thank our own Capital Medical Society Staff, our exec Pam Irwin, Shannon Boyle and Rosalie Carlin. And for We Care, Diana Bixler, Abby Edwards, Shonda Davis, Roshanda Dorsey and Gregory Sharp.

I visited more than three dozen medical societies across the state over the years. Using objective metrics of financial soundness, percent membership in the county medical society of all physicians in the county, physician services, community outreach, and statewide engagement, hands down, the Capital Medical Society is number one.

And we have a special guest with us tonight, former President of the Florida Senate, Don Gaetz. Don you have been the most supportive of our cause, and you did more for our profession than any other legislator that I have ever met. You didn’t know this at the time, but for me you became a mentor by example. I watched you from the sidelines as you gave your signature eloquent and impassioned speeches and took mental notes. I also watched you pull off some parliamentary maneuvers in committee meetings that had the parliamentarians of the senate scratching their heads and left your foes crushed.

I was at one committee meeting where the other side managed to vote down one of our bills. The bill was dead. And by some miracle or magic you pulled one of those tricks and resurrected it and it eventually passed the Senate. We can call that the Lazarus bill. And I was always amazed that with all the power you had at your disposal, you were always the humble and consummate servant leader. You served as an example for me and I tried as best I could to follow your example. Please help me thank Don on behalf of all of us for all he did for our profession.

It was very interesting getting to know Don. His leadership path and mine paralleled each other for a while. I was FMA PAC president when he was ascending the leadership of the State Senate and we were both responsible for raising money for that election cycle. We were at a dinner one evening and I was bemoaning the fact that the FMA PAC fundraising goal for that election cycle of $2 million dollars. He looked at me with an equally pensive expression, and a smirk, and said to me, “I share your pain, I’ve gotta raise $18 million.” Suddenly felt great. Two million, that’s nothing!

Sometime later Don was Senate President and I was FMA Secretary. The FMA PAC urgently needed to find $1M for some important races. In the meantime, Don came to our house to have dinner and he and I were talking about this when his phone rang. He answered the call and immediately became very serious, nodded a few times and said with a grim voice, “I’ll be right there.” He ended the call, looked at me and said, I’m sorry, I have to leave right now, there’s a problem with the budget and CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

I have to go to the capital to find four billion dollars by tomorrow morning. Our one-million-dollar dilemma was nothing compared to that. Happily, we found the one million and he found the four billion.

And the political process is absolutely crazy. The things you have to do to get pro medicine people elected are totally out of our scope of understanding and we need the expert staff of the FMA to navigate those treacherous and unfamiliar waters.

One day, I received a call to go to the FMA office to give a check to a politician. Please know, there is absolutely no quid pro quo. You try to identify pro medicine candidates and get them elected and then you hope they remain pro medicine. The gift ban was in force already and the transaction was surreal. He walked in, I handed him a coke, he handed me a dollar, and 15 minutes later.

I handed him a check for $25,000 dollars. It was all perfectly legal and above board.

Tonight we are celebrating Doctors’ Day. It’s a day where we take stock and look around us and appreciate our colleagues. We all have in common the commitment to our patients to do everything we can to help them.

We are the only ones in the healthcare system with the ultimate responsibility for the outcome of the care of our patients. When we realized this sometime during medical school it was very sobering, I know it was for me. As we pursued our dreams, we worked very hard to learn as much as we could so we could bear this responsibility. No one else in the health care system bears this responsibility nor have they spent the number of years we did to earn the right to practice medicine.

And as I tried to make the point tonight, the FMA and the rest of organized medicine are the only entities that defend our noble profession and I strongly encourage all of you to become engaged, if not with your time, then with your money so the FMA can continue to do what it can for our profession. Physician wellness became the number one issue while I was president and unfortunately it retains that terrible distinction. On Doctors’ Day we need to remember that outside of our spouses and loved ones, we are the only ones looking out for each other. So if you suspect one of our colleagues is struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. Get them to the Wellness and burnout web page the Capital Medical Society has set up for us. There are also wellness resources on the FMA and AMA web sites. Talk with them to see what you can do for them. As many as one in two physicians today have burnout.

Every morning I look forward to going to work. And every evening I look forward to going home. Let's all look out for one another and help each other pay attention to our wellness. Let’s keep sight of who we are and what we do. Let’s not allow all the terrible external factors interfere with what we do and get in the way of enjoying practicing medicine. Every day we should celebrate and appreciate what we do. After all, we are all indeed very special people, and vital for our society. Let’s be proud and hold our heads up. For at the end of the day, we are doctors.

A MAMA’S LOVE

By Charles D. “Pedro” Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP Mother’s Day is the day we set aside to honor those who brought us into this world and cared for us.

If your Mama is still alive, go see her. Tell her she is appreciated. I wish I could.

So often we don’t appreciate the best moments of our lives and the most important people until it’s too late. Life is about change, and today’s joys may be tomorrow’s memories, but on Mother’s Day I’m at least thankful for the memories. We need to pay more attention to the treasures in our lives while we still have them. Mama once said to Pedro, “Enjoy the little things in your life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”

Mama had about as little as anybody I’ve ever known but I never heard her complain about anything she didn’t have. My Mama’s dresses were handmade and she was glad to have them. She frequently reminded Pedro not to make fun of other people’s clothes. She said that whatever a person wore was probably the best they had.

My Mama lived through a depression and a world war. She ate buttermilk and cornbread cooked at home in the same old black frying pan. She placed a value on truth and honor. She wanted a brighter future for her son and she delivered.

My Mama was a praying woman and I knew this ‘cause she walked through the storms of life with her head held up to the heavens. One time she was looking up and I heard her saying, “O Lord, someway, somehow help my son git the schooling I never got, which he needs to help him on in life.”

She listened to my prayers at night and she woke me in the mornings. She listened to my concerns and gave me encouragement. Pedro did not feel very smart until Mama kept telling him he was and then he was.

My Mama loved me enough to teach me right from wrong.

She loved me enough not to give me ever’thang I wanted. She gave me more hugs than switches but enough of the latter to keep me in line. She made sure I knew the importance of education and that gift has taken me places I never dreamed of. Most of all she gave me love. One time, Mama said, “Pedro, you’ve outgrown my lap but you’ll never outgrow my love.”

Pedro learned a lot from Mama at the supper table. First, I learned I had a place in the family and that I belonged. I also learned to share and had to pay attention to the number of folks at the table so I could take the proper portions. I was grown before I realized the chicken neck wasn’t really Mama’s favorite piece of chicken.

Mama watched our manners and I cudn’t fill my plate until ever’body was seated and the blessing had been said. When you wanted something passed you said “please” and then “thank you.”

One time, Mama asked Pedro if he wanted some beans.

Pedro replied, “No.” Mama said, “No what?” Pedro replied, “No beans.” Mama then said that she wanted us to say “no ma’m,” “yes ma’m,” “no, thank you,” and “please.” She didn’t want us young’uns to grow up with people thanking we were Yankees.

Mama’s sayings at the supper table still ring in my ears even on this Mother’s Day. “Being nice don’t cost a thang and is worth a fortune.” “’Please’ and ‘thank you’ will take you further than a Cadillac, for a lot less money.” One time she said to Pedro, “I know you licked the plate clean but I still have to wash it.”

Of all of Mama’s sayings, the one I remember the most and that meant the most was “I love you, son.” This probably will always be the favorite saying of all Mamas.

On this Mother’s Day, I wish with all my heart I could once again go back to the old homeplace, see Mama and say, “I love you too, Mom.” Happy Mother’s Day. Reprinted with author permission from More Simpler Times, Tales of a Southern Boy.

AVERAGE PHYSICIANS ARE EXTRAORDINARY

It wasn’t my first return from maternity leave, but this busy ED shift wasn’t going well. I kept putting off breast pumping to complete “just one more thing.” Then my son’s school secretary called. I had told our nanny the wrong pick-up time. She wasn’t answering her phone. I was disappointed in myself and frustrated that I couldn’t leave. But I am a physician – I am responsible to patients.

I finally reached our nanny and took a break five hours into my shift, relieved to be in a quiet room.

I pushed away my feelings of inadequacy and got back to work reviewing results. My heart sank again when I read the radiologist report: “mass suspicious for neoplasm.” My 40-something-yearold patient had arrived with chest pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations. Everything had check out normal except his chest radiograph which showed a possible infiltrate. He didn’t have a cough, though, and I knew had needed a CT to rule out malignancy. It could have been done outpatient, but he accepted my offer to “just get it done today.”

Average physicians grieve.

Now, I would tell him he might have cancer. His wife had left to pick up one of their children from school. He was eerily calm. When his voice cracked slightly, he apologized. Meanwhile, I was fighting tears as I thought about my patient, in the same decade of life as myself, with his spouse and young children, and what he faced. I imagined facing the same diagnosis and the fear I would have for my family. I wondered if I would regret becoming a physician with the accompanying sacrifices that it has required.

You were meant to save lives. This is the reason you were here today – to listen to your intuition, catch this early and save his life.”

Average physicians are “raised” in medicine to believe that we must be superhuman.

I did cry. It was a bad day for me, but worse for her.

Yet, she unexpectedly showed me great kindness and taught me about receiving gratitude.

It can be difficult to feel a sense of accomplishment or pride in being a physician. We have the highest expectations of ourselves and are asked to do impossible things. Anything less than perfect 100 percent of the time is unacceptable. Even when we face overwhelming odds, we feel we have failed when there is a bad outcome. Our health care system judges us with survey ratings rather than meaningful quality measures and constantly adds mor administrative work and as new ways to fail.

And lately, physicians are viewed with suspicion as adversaries or villains. TV shows portray us a greedy and unethical. The public instead trusts celebrities and essential oil purveyors. Some nurses, colleagues who should be allies, have waged a PR war, promoting themselves by cutting down physicians, portraying us as overbearing, stupid, dangerous, and lacking in “heart.” It is demoralizing.

When my patient’s wife thanked me, I felt like a fraud. I didn’t do anything special. I did what any physician would have done. I just happened to be the lucky one who got thanked.

When his wife returned, I steeled myself and delivered the news. I expected tears and anger, but her reaction shocked me. Without a pause, she said: “Thank you. I have been praying and I know he will be fine. You probably don’t believe this, but I am certain. He was meant to be here today – this

Average physicians are extraordinary.

I now realize that what we do as average physicians is not ordinary at all. An average physician: • Worked hard enough to be the ~5 percent to be accepted into medical school • Devoted 7-11 years, spent upwards of 20,000 hours and passed numerous high-stakes examinations • Owes more than $200,000 of educational debt • Jumps through incessant documentation and administrative hoops • Politely answers complaints from patients inconvenienced by factors out of her control or who didn’t’ get what they wanted because it wasn’t medically necessary.

• Defers bathroom breaks, works through lunch, and spends hours of “pajama time” charting • Is sometimes threatened or assaulted by her patients • Faces malpractice litigation at least one but fears it for most of her career • Works weekends, evenings, and overnights, caring for patients without regard for ability to pay • Misses important personal and family events frequently • Never calls in sick because she can’t be easily replaced and has a duty to her patients • Suffers from bearing witness to the terrible suffering patients and their families sometimes experience You, too, might be just another average physician, but you are extraordinary.

It is true, though, that average physicians don’t listen…when patients thank us.

We remember every complaint, regardless of how absurd, but we don’t really hear when patients thank us. We should stop minimizing ourselves and reclaim our sense of pride in the work we do, even though we have come to think of it as ordinary and expected. We are doing extraordinary things – even if it “just our job.” Few in our society are capable or willing to do this work. We chose the long road, did the hard work, paid a high price, and continue to

make daily sacrifices to fulfill our oath. What we do truly matters to our patients.

So, shut up and listen! Take a pause to truly hear when your patient says thanks. Believe it. Savor it.

Tell them how much their gratitude means to you.

Write it down, so you remember. And share it with one another, because a thank you to one of us, is really a thank you to all of us.

HONOR A DOCTORS’ DAY TRIBUTES ENCOURAGED THEIR RECIPIENTS AND PROVIDED FUNDING FOR CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION INITIATIVES The response was brisk the last week of March, as grateful colleagues, patients, and parents reached out to be sure their doctors received encouragement in recognition of National Doctors’ Day on March 30. Gifts supported the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need, Physician Wellness Program, Scholarship Fund, and We Care Network.

The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $98 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2017-18, which ended June 30, 2018, more than $8 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $42,000 was awarded in 2018. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation.
