2018 CELEBRATION AWARDS DINNER

By Shannon Boyle, CMS Communications and Events Coordinator The seventeenth annual Celebration Awards Dinner honored Dr. Duncan Postma and Dr. John Mahoney. The event was held in honor of Doctors’ Day on March 29th at the FSU University Center Club. There was a room full of proud supporters of the award winners. Dr. Duncan Postma was awarded the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, and Dr. John Mahoney was awarded the Outstanding Physician Award. Our CMS President, Dr. David Dixon, did a great job emceeing the event.

Dr. Dixon thanked the Celebration Awards Dinner Steering Committee and the Capital Medical Society staff for their hard work in organizing and coordinating this event.

Dr. Dixon recognized eight CMS members who retired this past year: Dr. Ken Brummel-Smith, Dr. Robert Hoyne, Dr. William Kepper, Dr. J. Brian Sheedy, Dr. Robert Snyder, Dr. Curtis Stine, Dr. David Tedrick, and Dr. Richard Zorn. We wish them well in their retirement.

A moment of silence was held to honor several medical colleagues who passed away this past year: Dr. Marcos Barrera, Dr. Lewis Brodsky, Dr. Francis “Bud” Huber, Dr. Peter Ivory, and Dr. William Smith, Jr. Dr. Dixon thanked the referring and donating providers in the We Care Network. He noted that We Care Network donating providers donated more than $10 million in care last year and a cumulative total of more than $90 million in the last 26 years.

Dr. Dixon gave a brief overview of the Outstanding Physician Award, an award that honors a physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the profession of medicine. He asked all past recipients of this award to stand and be recognized. Dr. John Mahoney joined these esteemed physicians, as well as those who could not attend, as the 2018 recipient of this prestigious award.

Dr. Michael Forsthoefel, longtime friend and colleague of Dr. John Mahoney, presented him with the Outstanding Physician Award. (You can read Dr. Forsthoefel’s remarks on page 6 and Dr. John Mahoney’s remarks upon receiving the award on page 10.)

Dr. Dixon then shared a brief history of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. The criteria for the award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: compassion, service, respect, wisdom and integrity.

He asked all past recipients of this award to stand and be recognized. Dr. Duncan Postma joined these esteemed physicians, as well as those who could not attend, as the 2018 recipient of this prestigious award.

We were fortunate to have a talented FSU College of Medicine Bridge student, Gabriela Cintron playing the piano as guests arrived and during dinner.

DR. MICHAEL FORSTHOEFEL’S INTRODUCTION OF DR. JOHN MAHONEY, RECIPIENT OF THE 2018 OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD John has a lot of experience in Health Care Administration, and a lot of it was obtained on the job where he was paramount in starting Health Enterprise Companies, which was the holding company for Health Plan Southeast, and other corporations. Health Plan Southeast was a 6200 member IPA health maintenance organization that was very successful.

He later successfully negotiated a merger of this company with Coastal Physician Group and served on their Board of Directors for two years. Other accomplishments outside of medicine include being on the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, being involved in Leadership Tallahassee, and he did spend a year as the Chairman of the Economic Development Council.

These are all very unusual things for a physician to be involved in in Tallahassee.

But now, that is all the serious stuff. Let's play a game, what do you know about John Mahoney, and all of his other outside interests? (This is NOT a roast!)

Did you know that John, in addition to having a lot of expertise in music, in violins and piano, that is also very accomplished in his abilities to evaluate antique furniture, and knows a lot about antique furniture? He is the guy you want to go with you if you are going to be buying a piece and you are wondering if it is authentic or not.

Did you know that John is an avid reader on multiple topics, and especially now in his retirement, will be continuously reading, and reads at least a book a day?

Did you know that John is an avid gardener, and is meticulous about keeping his garden up including his oak trees, his camellias, and all of his other plants in tip-top shape? How many people do you know that put a huge cement turtle in his front yard and had it shipped in via the internet?

Did you know that John has an interest in this obscure British eccentric who lived around the turn of the century named Edward Heron-Allen? There is actually a big society in London named after this man, and he has written up to 49 articles around different aspects of this gentleman, and had them published in the Heron-Allen Society in London.

He has also visited society meetings in London.

Did you know that John is not only a connoisseur of good wine, which he frequently serves, and has a fair amount of knowledge on bourbon, but also has been known to eat many different strange foods?

These include antelope, crocodile (which he said was terrible!), and biltong (which is apparently dried antelope). He has eaten squid in ink in Argentina.

He ate a concoction that was called mixed beef that included kidneys, spleen, intestine, pancreas, and

blood sausage. In Peru, he was known to eat cui or better known by those of us as guinea pig. He was known in Egypt to eat a pigeon sandwich. This all came from Frank Skilling.

Dan Davis knows a lot of stories about John, most of which he says he really cannot tell because it would probably embarrass John a lot! He says he was a wine connoisseur before it was really in vogue to be a wine connoisseur. One story he does tell, is they both took organic chemistry in their second semester and on the midterm, they both got a low C, so they buckled down and apparently, at the end of the semester, both of them basically set the curve on the test. Dan described it as both of them having a "near miss." Dan also said he was famous as a med student because he never wore socks. Even at Dan Davis' rehearsal dinner, John was there and as usual, without wearing socks. Then when Dan married Bonnie, apparently Barbara caught the bouquet, much to John's chagrin!

Charlie Williams says that John has forsaken no end of leisure on our behalf. His enthusiasm, dedication, and skills have brought honor to the Capital Medical Society and its membership.

Faisal Munasifi is quoted as saying that John is respected, admired, and loved because of his fine character, his integrity, and his contribution not only to Capital Medical Society, but to the community.

David Craig describes him as a man of tireless energy and devotion to making things work for a better community for all of us.

Mark O'Bryant said he was amazed at how John could change the whole way of thinking at MEC meetings just by asking a few pointed questions, and making sure everybody understood the consequences of their actions.

Chuck Manning talks about him having practical insight into challenging circumstances, that is a rare trait among physicians. He possesses uncanny street smarts, and that may be the reason his opinion is often sought by administration of both hospitals.

Jerry Harris says he is a master of many trades, including pathology, medical administration, rare books, antique clocks, and colonial samplers.

Dave Stewart is quoted as say, "like Dirty Harry, when the dirty job needs to be done, Mahoney can be counted on to step up to the plate."

My two older boys, Eric and Kevin, always compared John to Jake Spoon in the movie and book Lonesome Dove. In Canada fishing he always had his hat and scruffy beard, and he was always ready for an adventure.

Dave Stewart tells about the time John acquired his current home. He was especially enamored of the giant fireplace that was the showpiece of the house. Shortly after setting in during Tallahassee's "cold season," a test of the fireplace seemed in order. Large fireplaces call for large fires, so he thought an old wooden table might be perfect for such an occasion to sit near the fireplace. What was surprising was the extreme flammability of the table's thick finish, which quickly ignited and transformed the table into a glowing gigantic inferno threatening to engulf the house, which is a 19th Century wooden structure. His sons were dazzled with the pyrotechnics as were his friends who quickly realized this would be no ordinary evening.

Luckily, only the top of the table had ignited, so he and his friends grabbed the legs and carried the flaming table across the living room and flung it out the front door onto the lawn where it continued to burn, but preventing a potentially even more amazing fire from taking down the house.

a five-minute walk or it could be a two-hour walk, you just did not know when you left the house.

The course for the next hour was dictated by which direction you took at the stop sign: left meant you would be okay, right was not so good, straight through and you were in big trouble. Jason held the record for the longest walk - they were gone for hours. John Pat had the most walks. Joe said he was the youngest and Josh never even went on one because he would always say "no." John Pat told the story that when he was in residency, dad would come home in the middle of the night, wake up the boys, so he could just play with them for a little bit. I think we all get caught in the business of medicine, especially during residency and very busy times with that kind of feeling of missing certain things in life.

Dr. Forsthoefel concluded his introduction with a slideshow of photos of Dr. Mahoney.

Some of the best stories come from his kids, however. There is one story that Josh and Jason tell, where while they were in high school, their dad was learning to play the violin and he would stand in the bay window of the house only with a white T-shirt and underwear on. They said so many of their friends and teachers would walk by or drive by and the next day they would ask if their dad was okay because he was playing the violin in the window with his underwear on.

All the boys also talked about when they were subjected to going on “the walk.” One of the most feared things was to feel a tap on your shoulder and hear their dad's voice saying, “let's go on a walk.”

Most the time, it was completely unknown what the walk was going to be about, but it was always about something you did, or might have impending, and it was also a sphincter-tightening event. It could be CAP SCAN - A CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY PUBLICATION 9

DR. JOHN MAHONEY’S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH UPON RECEIVING THE OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD being my wife’s and my late father’s personal physician.

Michael and his wife, Jana, have worked and donated financial support for the goals of the CMS Foundation for many years, best exemplified by the Christmas auction dinner at their home with Jana as cook and Mike and his plethora of friends, family and staff providing libations, food and friendship to the delight of the auction’s successful bidders.

After 69 years on the planet and 37 years in Tallahassee, I have many people to honor and thank. I can’t thank you all individually tonight. Please forgive me for these dramatically shortened recognitions:

To the Capital Medical Society, Capital Health Plan, the selection committee, nominating physicians and all of you tonight, I am honored by this recognition.

When a selection committee colleague phoned me, we had just finishing packing for a three-week tour of the Tanzanian hinterlands. I was unprepared for such a call, totally flummoxed.

But to share this evening with Dr. Duncan Postma, his wife, Dr. Marie Hayes, and their family is as great an honor, a crème de la crème. Duncan and Marie are our friends, colleagues, and fellow hikers. Duncan’s selection of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award is no surprise to us. Duncan, we have profound respect for your dedication to exemplary patient care and your consultative support among primary and specialty care colleagues. Duncan, I may seem overdressed for this occasion, but I wanted to dress in memory of one of my heroes of medicine, Dr. Nelson Kraeft. When he recently died, he died alone, depressed at having to live 99 years with his growing infirmities.

Yet, he was still an active participating advocate of our Foundation. Barb and I loved his company.

Nelson was my friend. We will never forget him or his importance in our lives. Duncan, when you speak at medical staff committees, people listen. You remind me most of Nelson at our meetings…quiet, respectful, insightful, caring and appropriately expressive when faced with episodes of inappropriate patient care. If you would only wear a bow-tie! You have always been my bell-weather go-to physician when I get lost in an administrative fog or the tangled forest of medicine.

You bring clarity to our profession. You are one of our gems.

Thanks to Mike Forsthoefel for your kind and gentle introduction. Michael was the 2016 recipient of this award but missed his recognition due to illness. I wanted him to introduce me tonight, so he could once again experience this award. I am honored to call you my friend, colleague and role model. 1. Two individuals: To the late esteemed Dr. William F. Enneking at the University of Florida College of Medicine for guiding me as a pre-med student in Orthopedic pathology research and supporting me as an applicant to medical school; to the incomparable Dr. Orson Smith for asking me the single most discombobulating question in 1986 that changed my life forever.

2. Pathology Associates: I was recruited to Tallahassee in 1981 by Ben and Jane Turner, Ben was my Chief Resident at the University of Florida. I thank all my partners for their friendship and support with special recognition to the following: 1. The late Tom Wood - for his concept of service to the entire community, physicians, hospitals and any patient in need of services regardless of their financial status and his concept of active physician participation in hospitals, physician offices, churches, schools, government and civic affairs. 2. The late Woody Burgert - for honing my skills as a Surgical Pathologist and our role as pathologist colleagues to the medical staff. A dear friend. 3. David Craig - my mental ethics officer, the gentle giant. 4. Jerry Harris- truly a world class teacher’s teacher. 5. Chuck Manning and wife, Mert - our close friends for over 39 years. 6. Margaret Neal - the heart & soul of our group. 7. Steve Sarbeck for correcting all my daily errors. 8. Dave Stewart - for his leadership skills and friendship.

3. Hospital and Private Practice Staffs: I remain deeply appreciative towards the friendships and skills of the following: 1. Pathology Associates laboratory staff. I can’t thank each of you enough for your efforts and tolerance of my foibles. 2. Laboratory staffs at TMH, CRMC, Jackson Hospital in Marianna, DMH in Perry. 3. 4. Medical Staffs: I’m retired now, but every day I remember my collegial interactions with physicians, nurses and laboratory personnel and administrators. Of note were my daily visitors: 1. Charlie Williams: my spiritual guru, songster, South Georgia historian, and friend. Precious memories, my friend. 2. Surgical colleagues: Drs. R.D. Snyder, Richard Zorn and Jeff Crooms. 3. TMH residents and FSU medical students. 4. Dr. Mike Forsthoefel - his infectious laugh and constant cajoling.

Barb and I have many friends scattered amongst you tonight: Our children, Jason, Josh, Jon, Joe and their beloved spouses and some of our 10 grandchildren.

My siblings, Mike, Martha, Kevin, Molly, Mary and their spouses.

My three grade school friends, from Orlando: Jim and Paula Magee, Joe and Jerrie Neduchal and St. Augustine: George and Peggy Richardi. We were known as the four musketeers and we were wonderfully wicked bad boys.

We acknowledge our late parents, Jim and Daphne Mahoney, Ken and Mary Jane Peterson and my late sister, Michele.

And last and certainly the best, my wife, Barb, who I first met 53 years ago. We will be celebrating our 47th anniversary this year. We dated at the University of Florida and were married in Gainesville. She is the pillar of my life, my love and the center of our family.

Almost every decision I make has her quiet fingerprint.

I am who I think I am because of her.

I hope to stay involved in healthcare in retirement, now working with Elder Care Services of the Big Bend under the superb guidance of Mark Baldino and his dedicated staff and Board, the TMH Foundation Board with its broad community leaders and supportive staff, and the Capital Medical Society Foundation.

Since 2002, I have been most fortunate and privileged to work closely with the CMS Foundation and its We Care Network, which provides a safety net to those low-income, uninsured adult patients most in need through coordination of donated specialty medical and dental care. Our goal is simple: Improve health outcomes and quality of life by early seamless entry into the medical care system. We honor two individuals who envisioned this effort in 1992: Dr. James Stockwell and the unsinkable Mollie Hill. Our leaders now include 317 local physicians and dentists, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Capital Regional Medical Center, Florida State University, Capital Health Plan, the State of Florida, City and County Commissions, United Way of the Big Bend, Health Departments, the Frueauff Foundation, hospital, physician and dental

office staffs, the CMS Foundation Board, the We Care Network Advisory Committee, and the CMS We Care Network Staff: Pam Irwin, Diana Bixler, Shannon Boyle, Roshanda Dorsey, Abby Edwards, Shonda Davis, Robin Satchell, Greg Sharp and Rosalie Carlin.

Please join Barb & I, Duncan and Marie in thanking the staff for their exemplary work in healthcare and the event tonight.

When I attend organizational funding request presentations as your representative, I am so moved by the words of individual patients that have received the medical care by this team. Words you may not be aware of. I leave you with the words of one of our patients, Charles Cox, a self-employed painter all his life. Without insurance, he delayed seeking care with symptoms of heart disease.

He suffered a serious heart attack in the ER, had open heart surgery with a valve replacement. Following discharge, he was lost to follow-up because he could not afford needed outpatient services. Dr. Katopodis at Southern Medical Group, came to his assistance as his We Care provider. Katopodis referred the patient to Dr. Tim Ruark at TMH Physician Partners for repair a large inguinal hernia that now impaired his ability to work. He had his electricity and water cut off, but his neighbors continued to support him with food, water and groceries. Following surgery, he returned to active employment.

To this funding review team composed of 20 community-wide non-medical individuals, Mr. Cox ended with an emotionally charged statement. You could have heard a pin drop, certainly his tear drops.

“Without the We Care Network, I would not have been able to see Dr. Katopodis or Dr. Ruark. I would have continued to struggle and been unable to work. I have worked hard all my life and I wanted to keep working.

I didn’t want to become someone who has to rely on others for everything. I am so appreciative that there is a program like We Care out there to help people like myself. It is a blessing to have doctors like Dr. Katapodis and Dr. Ruark and a hospital who will give their time and talents to help people get back on their feet and get the care they need.”

It just doesn’t get any better than this. This is not a physician network, but a community supported network that cares. Thanks to all of you tonight.

In closing, all can say is that it is a wonderful life.

Medicine is an honorable profession. May the God of us all extend his love and blessings to each of you, your families and your patients.

And…may God bless America.

2018 CMS CELEBRATION AWARDS DINNER

DR. RAY BELLAMY’S INTRODUCTION OF DR. DUNCAN POSTMA, RECIPIENT OF THE 2018 I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD Duncan Postma and another tall UNC Ear, Nose and Throat buddy, Mike Poole, both well over six feet, came to town in 1986. The “Twin Towers” some would say.

They started Tallahassee Ear, Nose and Throat from scratch and from the start Tallahassee ENT was known for its strong academic bent and high quality. I got to know Duncan and his wife Marie partly through tennis.

In the early 90’s, Duncan and I started playing as doubles partners on Sunday afternoon.

We still do.

Books have been written about how much you can learn of an individual on the tennis court.

Are they honest in their calls of “in” and “out?” Sportsmanship in so many aspects is on display – or not. Duncan has always exhibited the complete package. The I.B. Harrison Award features: compassion, service, respect, wisdom, integrity. Duncan has it all.

And even though Michael Jordan was one of his patients at UNC, he’d probably tell you his most important accomplishment at UNC was courting a young and beautiful internal medicine house officer, Marie Hayes, who became both a dermatologist and his wife. Together they’ve raised three great kids, Tom, Audrey and Galen.

When starting practice in Tallahassee, Duncan continued his academic emphasis, publishing papers, teaching medical students and residents, taking on major administrative duties at Tallahassee ENT and serving as medical director of the Leon County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

He helped found the Red Hills Outpatient Surgery Center and served as its medical director during the crucial start-up time.

His group’s electronic medical records system was a pioneer hereabout, and along with his nurse practitioner, Trish Skinner, they created widely (L-r) Dr. David Dixon, Dr. Ray Bellamy, and Dr. Duncan Postma. used templates for ENT EMR.

Duncan grew up on a farm outside Marianna, Florida. He was an outstanding athlete and excelled in basketball and tennis, along with academics.

At Davidson, his basketball team was, during his time, ranked 5th in the country. He tried out for the ABA team, the San Diego Rockets, after graduation, then later shared Davidson freshman team coaching duties with Jim Larranaga, now the Miami head coach.

At UNC med school, among other accomplishments, Duncan was head of pediatric airway and Head and Neck cancer initiatives. He wrote ENT Board Exam questions for years, starting prior to his residency, when he was doing a fellowship. Former UNC ENT chairman Newton Fisher shared with Marie an observation on Duncan: “Such a decent man,” a favorite quote to which those who know him would readily agree. When Marie proudly shared this sentiment, I wondered if it sounded underwhelming. But on reflection, No. It captures a core value and perhaps the essence of Duncan’s lifelong embrace of quality, caring, integrity and skill – the very qualities we are here to celebrate.

At UNC medical school, one of his classmates was Francis Collins, who later headed the human genome project and now heads the National Institutes of Health.

They have remained good friends and enjoy their class reunions at UNC.

But no matter how busy he was, Duncan always had time to do the right thing by the poor and underserved.

As Dr. Louis St. Petery pointed out, he was always willing to see sick kids who needed his care, no matter the circumstances. He also provided crucial testimony in Dr. St. Petery’s successful Florida lawsuit protecting pediatric patients’ access to Medicaid.

All of you who know Duncan are undoubtedly impressed by his courtly manner. But don’t be fooled – Duncan has been known to let his hair down. According to one unnamed source close to Duncan, he has been known to wear Christmas ornaments as earrings at the office holiday party. And he is fond of playing “Rock and Roll Truck” with his children, which involves driving his old Suburban down the road, weaving from side to side while leaning strongly from one side to the other.

Unfortunately, life takes some unexpected turns, and how we meet them tells others a great deal about our character.

As many of you know, several years ago Duncan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. But as much as he values his athleticism, I’ve never heard him once complain or use it as an excuse, either in his practice or in his tennis. I am proud to call him my friend, my medical colleague and my tennis partner for over two decades. No one is more deserving of this award.

DR. DUNCAN POSTMA’S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH UPON RECEIVING THE I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD to elope with my father. 1 of my 3 brothers became an orthopedist and the other 2, radiologists, or as 1 calls himself, “a black and white film critic”. We had only 1 sister, who we tried to spoil to death, but she was too level headed and smart for that. She and my brother-in-law, Phillip, decided to raise a family.

After that, she obtained a degree in family therapy.

Phillip is a retired engineer and my most useful brother because he can fix anything.

Dr. Dixon, CMS members, friends, and family – I hope you enjoyed the photos (many thanks to Shannon Boyle). I would also like to thank Dr. Mahoney for sharing this awards day with me.

He is a Renaissance man and the master of many endeavors, but I most appreciate his expertise as a surgical pathologist: He made a stressful job look easy.

When Dr. Brian Sheedy called to notify me that I was this year’s recipient of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Award, I was surprised and especially honored to hear it from a fellow physician whom I have always admired. I felt a sense of pride, too. Dr. Bud Harrison was “old school” in the best sense of the phrase. By 1986, when we moved here, he had become Chief Medical Officer, a role that he filled with distinction. At that time there were several older doctors who would disrupt staff meetings and he was only one that could quickly shut them down. On the other hand, he had a generous and warm heart. A Teddy Bear with muscle… He was a great role model. For me, a farm boy from Jackson County who wanted to be a doctor since age 5, this award has a special meaning. Becoming a physician was a calling for me - something I had to do, not just wanted to do.

Now I didn’t come from a typical northwest Florida cattle farm. My father was a Dutch Marine who had dropped out of a Dutch engineering school when the Germans dropped in on the Netherlands, and a mother who dropped out of Smith College

Some of my best memories from my youth are from the hayfields. I’ll never forget one of those afternoons. We had barely gotten the last load of haybales into the barn just before a menacing thunderstorm finally hit. The sweet smell of the newly baled hay, the 15 degree drop in temperature and the satisfaction of having “beaten” the thunderstorm are firmly etched in my mind. There was also danger in the hayfields. Occasionally, live rattlesnakes were in the haybales. Once when raking up grass into windrows for the baler, the wind blew my hat off. I quickly hit the tractor clutch and brakes, and low and behold, my hat lay between the front and back wheels. According to protocol I should have shut the tractor down before getting off.

To save time, I tried to reach down to grab my hat.

I almost had my hat when my foot slipped off the clutch and I fell on my hat between the front and back tractor wheels. I rolled out of the way as the driverless tractor lurched down the hayfield heading toward the barbed wire fence. While the tractor had a head start on me, I was faster, spurred on by the image of the tractor smashing into the fence.

I jumped on the raking machine that was hooked on the tractor and crawled forward, reaching and stopping the runaway just before it reached the fence. There were four things I should have learned: 1. it can be dangerous on the farm 2. with a dangerous or important task, it’s always best to have a protocol to follow (and then follow it) 3. well I was pretty fast and pretty quick (especially when motivated) 4. natural selection was in play here CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

My older brother and I attended Davidson on basketball scholarships. After college I tried out for pro basketball, played in a summer pro league in LA, then coached one season at Davidson, was briefly in the Army and did a year of research. I started medical school at UNC in 1973. For a while I thought I wanted to be an internist, primarily because UNC had a brilliant and dynamic internal medicine department with Tallahassee’s Dr. Dan Davis as the chief resident. However, I came to my senses and realized my personality was better suited to be a surgeon where I could fix at least some of the problems.

In 1982, I finished my ENT training at UNC and the new chairman, Dr. Rick Pillsbury hired me and Trish Reilly (now Skinner) to run the ENT clinic in Chapel Hill. Dr. Pillsbury was from the well-known flour company, and at our clinic in Ft. Bragg he used to be confused with Dr. Salisbury, a plastic surgeon who did a lot of breast reconstructions, so their patients were often in the wrong clinic. Finally, the last time it was to occur he shrieked, “Look, he’s Salisbury, and I’m Pillsbury: he’s the steak and I’m the cake.” In 1986, my wife, Marie, and I along with Mike and Susan Poole decided to start Tallahassee ENT (TENT). We were helped immensely when Trish decided to come with us. If she had any doubts about the move, they were erased by an enthusiastic Tallahassee advocate, the young and irrepressible Dr. Joe Camps, then a UNC urology resident.

Before we left UNC, Dr. Pillsbury had advised me I’d be bored to death doing simple tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies. I responded that would be fine: I loved doing simple things well. In fact, we have seen an unbelievable number of unusual cases.

It’s true that you diagnose what you know, the corollary of you see what you know. And you know what you see. The first case Marie, my dermatologist wife, and I shared was a newborn referred with a swimmer’s ear. The kid’s ear and scalp did not look right. I sent him over to Marie, who felt it was probably was just seborrhea …but it could be histiocytosis X, a very rare condition. She did a little biopsy and told the pathologist of her clinical suspicion. Of course, she was correct. We are taught in med school that when you hear hoofbeats, think horses. But the full truth is to know when to

consider Zebras or Wildebeasts and to know what they look like.

PROFESSIONAL NOTES FSU College of Medicine professor Dr. Les Beitsch assumed his new responsibilities as Florida Deputy Secretary of Health on April 23, 2018. He will continue in his current role as chair of the medical school’s department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine. He has focused a significant portion of his teaching and research on health policy and public health. He served as Florida’s deputy secretary for health during 12 years with the DOH earlier in his career. At the College of Medicine, Beitsch developed the Center on Patient Safety and founded the Center for Medicine and Public Health in 2012.

Coach Willie Taggart linked the FSU Seminole football program’s past to the present during the FSU Spring Game on April 15, 2018 with an on field reunion scrimmage of former players during halftime. Enjoying the reunion, was our own Dr. David Castillo, a TMH hospitalist and family medicine physician. #63 Castillo, former team captain and starting center under Coach Bobby Bowden was an anchor of Florida State’s Offensive Line and a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar in 2006.

Tallahassee Community College honored 10 community members and five TCC students on March 25, 2018 at its annual Women’s History Month program. The featured speaker was Suzanne Harrison, M.D., professor of family medicine and director of clinical programs at Florida State University College of Medicine. She developed a free clinic at Refuge House in 2003, where she provided weekly care for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking until 2013. She has helped provide medical care to underserved patients at rural county health departments since 2003 and often volunteers her time at Neighborhood Medical Center.

Dr. Harrison is the national president of the American Medical Women’s Association and the foundation chair of AMWA’s Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans. Community members honored were: Karinda Barrett, Dana Brooks Cooper, Janeia Daniels Ingram, Gina Giacomo, Sha’Ron James, Andrea Jones, Sheila Labissiere, Elizabeth Ricci, Anitra Thomas, and Marcia Warfel.

MEDICAL COMMUNITY OPIOID EPIDEMIC PARTNERSHIP Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and Capital Regional Medical Center are jointly interested in promoting a campaign in their service areas about the opioid epidemic- what it is, who it affects and how the medical community is coming together to fight it. They envision a multi-channel campaign utilizing print, digital and billboards that would run for a minimum of three months. TMH and CRMC has had several medical practices in the area indicate their interest in joining in these efforts but they wanted to see what other practices may have interest. The cost would be divided among those who participate and practice names/logos would be featured when appropriate.

CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE

By Pam Irwin, CMS Executive Director Each year, Capital Medical Society meets with the incoming third year medical students at the FSUCOM Tallahassee Regional Campus and invites them to learn more about organized medicine and the benefits of joining Capital Medical Society. Last year, Capital Medical Society presented a $2,000 check to Florida State University College of Medicine’s Tallahassee Regional Campus’s Friends of the College of Medicine Fund, during the Third Year Orientation, to be used for a scholarship for a medical student from that campus who has demonstrated excellence.

Through this donation, Brett Tooley, MS4 was awarded the 2017-18 Tallahassee Regional Campus Merit Scholarship.

Brett Tooley

Brett graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and the University of Florida concurrently with Bachelor of Science degrees in pre-engineering and environmental engineering services. Brett was an active member of the UF Chapter of Engineers Without Borders and served as the chapter president in 2007-2008. After graduating, Brett went to work designing landfills and solid-waste management systems in Florida and Puerto Rico. After three years in the field, he pursued his lifelong dream of being a physician and continued his education in health sciences. To gain further experience before applying to medical school, Brett found employment as a medical scribe in an emergency room in Gainesville. While a student at UF, Brett met his wife, Priscilla. In August 2013, they welcomed their first child Shelby. Brett chose the FSU College of Medicine because of its commitment to underserved rural populations.

He was recently inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. AOA is a professional medical organization that recognizes and advocates for excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals of medicine. Members had a compelling drive to do well

and to advance the medical profession and exemplify the highest standards of professionalism.

Brett will be graduating in May and will be completing his residency at University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Emergency Medicine. We wish him the very best in his medical career!

We recently received this letter from Brett: “Dear Mrs. Irwin, I would like to offer my deepest thanks to you and the Capital Medical Society for your generosity in funding the 2017-18 Tallahassee Regional Campus Merit Scholarship. I feel honored and privileged to receive such an award.

My path to a career in medicine has been tortuous to say the least. I moved to Florida to complete my engineering degree at the University of Florida 10 years ago. After graduation, I worked full time as an engineer for three years when I felt a calling to medicine. I began taking night classes in Anatomy and Physiology while working full-time as an engineer when an opportunity to enter the healthcare workforce became available, and I began working as a medical scribe. This experience solidified my decision to go to medical school. Two years later, I was accepted at the Florida State University College of Medicine.

Entering medical school with an 8-month old daughter and moving to a city without any friends or family for support is easily the most difficult decision my wife and I have ever made. Looking back at the struggles we endured, we feel overwhelmed with the confidence that we can overcome all obstacles moving forward through the end of medical school and residency. …. I can look back on the work I have done and feel proud of my accomplishments. Being awarded this scholarship only validates my decision to take the road less traveled and fulfill my calling to this profession as a healer.

Robin Satchell is our Wakulla County Case Manager. She has a Bachelor’s in Rehabilitation Services from Thomas University and has been with us since 2014. What Robin loves most about her job is being a part of a program that assists the providers who are giving back to our community. She enjoys that our team is as supportive of one another as we are to those we serve. Robin is the mother to one son, Adam (24), and her furry daughter, Ellie Mae. BIG DATA, EHRS, AND PATIENT CARE: HOW HEALTHCARE IS EVOLVING As part of our Practice Manager Viewpoint Series, we present a conversation with Shereese Maynard, a healthcare and health IT strategist based in Salisbury, Maryland.

Q: What issues are you focused on in the evolving healthcare environment?

Shereese: I’m a healthcare IT (HIT) adoption and policy strategist. I have been in the healthcare field since 2001. I currently work with independent practices, helping them to adopt and understand new technologies and put frameworks in place that encourage efficient workflows, coupled with policy structure. My focus currently is on blockchain technologies and interoperability challenges. I’m working with providers in New Mexico, connecting three facilities and developing their data aggregation program.

Q: The Doctors Company’s recent analysis of our closed claims database revealed that malpractice claims involving electronic health records (EHRs) have risen continuously over the past 10 years, with both system factors like failure of decision alerts and user factors like copy-and-paste errors playing a role. Where do you see the role of EHRs in the current landscape? What are your concerns about their use and their risks?

Shereese: EHRs are here to stay and for a very good reason: EHRs, while still in infancy, improve care coordination. Admittedly, we’ve hit a little bump in the road as clinicians and organizations try to find the best EHR workflow. There is no one-size-fits-all EHR solution. Organizations have to first define who they are, who their patients are, and look for solutions that best speak to their customized needs. I think we’ll see better EHR products being produced, and I also think, with the current EHR vendor leaders only garnering a 1/10th market share, we will see some new vendors emerge with better EHR products being produced. Physician-led developers will drive this innovation.

Q: Cyber attacks continue to dominate the news— with healthcare being the most attacked form of business.

How do you address cybersecurity concerns in your role? What are your biggest cybersecurity concerns?

Shereese: Cybersecurity has to be a concern for all organizations. We continue to see breaches across the U.S., but I think it's an area where organizations are still in denial. We’re taught to hide our vulnerabilities, but when it comes to cybersecurity challenges, organizations need to be more transparent. I often remind providers that pretending a vulnerability doesn’t exist isn’t the same as not having one. As organizations update technologies, they need to insist on fullsystem conversions and invest in cyber insurance comparable to the value of their data. Also, cybersecurity training for staff should be native to systems. Having one training session per year doesn’t help staff retain information and is not the best defense against attacks. We’re seeing some great movement in the area of blockchain uses in healthcare, which I believe will go a long way toward securing patient data.

Q: What do you see as the impact of health IT on the physician-patient relationship, both good, bad, and neutral? What strategies do you use to mitigate some of the challenges?

Shereese: It’s my belief that HIT integration is a long-term strategy that will greatly improve the physician-patient relationship. We’ve stumbled a bit in this area, as physicians struggle to use the EHR efficiently in the exam room. This will change, in my opinion. The ills we feel in-house are not necessarily being seen by patients. Several studies now suggest that while doctors feel HIT is hindering the relationship between physician and patient, patients are reporting no change. Vendors can help mitigate some of the challenges faced by physicians by adding the patient and physician “voice” to HIT design thinking. As more customizable solutions are made available and physician input becomes a greater part of the HIT strategy, products that improve communications will rule the day.

Q: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing healthcare practices today? Where are the biggest areas for improvement?

Shereese: The two biggest challenges to healthcare today, in my opinion, are data strategies and management of human resources. Healthcare, always five years behind other industries in the area of innovation, has not transitioned into a datadriven industry well. We have not understood data aggregation and we are not using data well. Our systems are fragmented and our initiatives are too segmented. We’re not all on the same page with:

• What is actionable data?

• What languages should we use to define the data? For example, there are currently 12 ways to define a date, and there are at least four terms to define data science.

• How are we to use this big data to improve health outcomes?

Second is our management of our human resources. Healthcare needs to dedicate more resources to ongoing training, as this is the greatest investment we can make to ensure sustainable workflows and patient satisfaction. We need to cultivate our own data scientists. Teaching current talent to evaluate and extrapolate data cuts costs and has a buy-in component that is a benefit to the organization. The turnover in healthcare is higher than in other industries because of our failure to reinvest in talent.

But I believe that in healthcare we are seeing an improvement in leadership. New voices, some coming out on social media, are disrupting the healthcare landscape. The qualities we seek out in leaders in other industries are now being recognized in healthcare. We’re finally hearing more diverse voices—as I often say to organizational leaders, “If everyone in your organization looks and thinks exactly as you do, you’ve got a big problem.”

CMSF AND CMSA RAISE FUNDS THROUGH HEARTH AND SOUL'S NON PROFIT PARTNER PROGRAM $929 was raised for Capital Medical Society Foundation, Inc. (CMSF) and Capital Medical Society Alliance (CMSA) in March with the sale of Hearth and Soul’s featured candle through Hearth and Soul’s Non Profit Partner Program. Two special events were hosted by Hearth and Soul to help increase awareness of the two organizations’ missions and to promote candle sales. Funds raised will be used to support the local community. CMSF, whose programs include the We Care Network that coordinated over $10 million in donated specialty medical and dental care to low income, uninsured adults last year, will use their portion of the donation to fulfill their mission in this four county area. CMSA will use their portion of the donation to support the Hang Tough Foundation, which is their community outreach partner this year. Hang Tough Foundation helps families hang tough during their journey with childhood diagnoses by offering resources and encouragement. Hearth and Soul has donated over $22,000 to area charities through its Non Profit Partner Program.

Capital Medical Society Foundation and Capital Medical Society Alliance held a very successful Libations, Candles, & Conversation Soiree on March 22nd hosted by Hearth and Soul. We deeply appreciate the wonderful hospitality by Susie BuschTransou and her colleagues at Hearth and Soul.

Donate to the CMS Foundation We Thank Our Donors We thank the following people/organizations who made a donation to the CMS Foundation this past month: Capital Medical Society Foundation Anonymous – for Area of Greatest Need

Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $90 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2016-17, which ended June 30, 2017, more than $10.9 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $47,000 was distributed to eight medical students in 2017. ➢ Gifts to Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operation resources for Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants to area non-profits whose programs improve access to health care for the underserved. In 2017, CMSF awarded $10,000 in grants to Elder Care for their In-Home Services Program and to CMSF’s Physician Wellness Program.

Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam: You can make a donation to the CMS Foundation in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone, such as a fellow physician, you hold in high esteem or has taken care of you or your family. CMS Foundation will send an acknowledgement letter to those you memorialize and honor.
