The Capital Medical Society is pleased to announce Dr. Richard Zorn as the recipient of this year’s I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. Each year this award is presented to a physician who demonstrates dedication to the humanitarian values we associate with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison. These values include: compassion, service, respect, wisdom and integrity.
The Capital Medical Society is pleased to announce Dr. Wayne Batchelor as the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Physician Award. This award honors a physician who has been a leader within the field of medicine and political activities while demonstrating clinical excellence, and actively contributing to the education of future medical professionals.
Dr. Zorn is a board-certified general surgeon, originally from Macon, Georgia. Practicing medicine runs through the veins of the Zorn family. His older brother, George is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon in Birmingham, Alabama, and his younger brother, Don is a family medicine physician at the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) Family Medicine Residency Program and a past recipient of this prestigious award. The pursuit to practice medicine was passed on to the next generation as well. George has one son that is a cardiothoracic surgeon, one daughter that is a gynecologic oncologist, and one daughter that is a CONTINUED ON PAGE 6
Dr. Batchelor is board-certified in Cardiovascular Disease with added qualifications in Interventional Cardiology. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, but spent most of his young life in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His father was a professor of civil engineering and his mother was a nurse. Given that his parents were his most influential role models, he knew he wanted to follow in their footsteps. Ultimately, his heart led him to medicine. In 1990, Dr. Batchelor received his Doctorate of Medicine summa cum laude at Queen’s University in Canada, where he was awarded the Dr. and Mrs. Sydney P. Schiff Medal in Surgery and the Nathan E. Berry Prize in Urology. He then completed a Comprehensive Internal Medicine Residency and a CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
