MARCH EDITION, VOLUME 2016, NO. 3

A MESSAGE FROM THE CMS PRESIDENT By J. Daniell Rackley, M.D. to communicate with each other effectively has become compromised. The unfortunate result of this is that our patients’ care can sometimes be fragmented as well. Dear CMS Members, It is my sincere pleasure to serve as your CMS President for 2016! I have served on the Board of Governors for the past 6 years, and I have witnessed firsthand very strong leadership during that time. I feel honored to follow in the footsteps of the physicians who have led CMS so admirably for such a long time. We have a strong medical society in Tallahassee, and our location in the capital puts us in a unique position of having the opportunity for more involvement with state legislature and other aspects of the FMA. We are also practicing in a unique time with seemingly more challenges than ever before. As I mentioned in my remarks at the installation dinner (full speech on page 22), one of those challenges is fragmentation. Geographically, we are now more separated than ever before. We have 2 large hospitals with employed physicians, FSU COM, and multiple private practitioners. As we have become more separated, our ability

CMS is the only entity that has the ability to encompass all of the physicians in this area. One of the strategic goals of CMS is to foster ways to improve physician to physician communication. First, we want physicians to get to know each other better. When we work together as colleagues, we ultimately take better care of our patients. Unfortunately, many of us do not know each other. CMS is trying to create more social events that give us the opportunity to better interact with each other. I would encourage every member to attend some of these events if possible. Another benefit that is free to CMS members that will allow us to better communicate is DocbookMD. This is an application for iPhone or Android devices that allows members to easily send a HIPAAcompliant message to another member regarding a patient. A desktop version is also available. Members can also send compliant messages to members of their care team such as nurses or mid-level providers.

Currently, it can be very difficult and time-consuming for physicians to actually speak with each other; however, DocbookMD will allow physicians to easily and quickly interact with each other directly. In this way, patient information can be shared in a timely fashion. The more members who are signed up, the better this will work. Currently, only 143/514 physician members are signed up. That’s only 28%. Once everyone is signed up, any member can easily send another member a message regarding a mutual patient. This will improve efficiency, as well as, patient care. Many scholarly articles are available that demonstrate that improved physician to physician communication improves patient outcomes. Capital Medical Society wants to improve our ability to communicate with each other. DocbookMD is just a start, and we will continue to look for ways that will allow us to communicate better. Also, we will continue to promote events that bring us together. Please make an effort to come out to these events and meet your colleagues! When we know each other and work together, our patients will ultimately benefit! CMS
