PROFESSIONAL NOTES Christie Alexander, M.D. was installed as the 73rd President of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians on Saturday, December 7th at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island during the Family Medicine Winter Summit. The Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP) is composed of more than 6,500 family medicine physicians, resident physicians, and medical students from across the state. The FAFP works to advance the specialty of family medicine by promoting excellence and improvement in the healthcare of all Floridians. Their priority is to help their members to become the best family physicians they can be through effective communication, legislation/regulation, education, advocacy, research, and motivation.

Scott B. Sellinger, M.D. was installed as the 52nd President of the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) at their annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in October 2019. The AACU represents over 4,000 urologists across the nation, including members from independent groups, hospital employed groups, and academic groups. The AACU is dedicated to developing and advancing health policy education as it affects urologic practice. Additionally, Dr. Sellinger serves on two other national urology boards and continues in his teaching role as a national authority on advanced prostate cancer therapies.

SPRING CLEANING AND COUNTRY MEDICINE

By Charles D. “Pedro” Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP Many home remedies were tried back in the 40’s and seeing a doctor was a last resort. Good thing back then we had strong bodies or we may not have survived the treatment. We were treated even if we didn’t know what was goin’ on. Ending a sentence with a preposition seems so natural.) Now-a-days we do diagnostic tests even if nothing is going on and it seems that a person in good health is a person who has not been properly investigated.

The Castor Oil remedy must have been a family remedy passed down for generations. It was one of the home medications that country folk kept going along with Vick’s Salve, Epson Salts, Goody’s Powders, Ex Lax, Hadacol, Black Draught, Witch Hazel and Carter’s Little Liver Pills. The truth was that most ills were not cured but worn out by a strong body.

As a kid during the spring cleaning it was necessary to get a good dose of Castor Oil whether you needed it or not. During the 1940’s, this occurred just as certain as Ground Hog Day. I was not allowed to go barefooted or take off my long handled underwear until the spring dose of Castor Oil. About May I was tired of my long handles stickin’ out of my short sleeved shirt and was tired of my worn-out soles flapping on my shoes so I would break down and take the unavoidable.

If we as kids felt sick, regardless of the cause, and expressed any desire to miss school, Mama would bring out the Castor Oil. One day at the age of 7, I was achin’ all over. I went out to catch the school bus but I didn’t.

Later in the day Mama saw me peeping over the wood pile and I saw her standing on the porch with a belt and a bottle of Castor Oil. After my spanking I took the medicine like a man. Perfect attendance came to me the rest of the year and the next.

At the age of 11, I developed a belly ache one night and woke Mama up. That was a mistake. A dose of Castor Oil followed. Around 4am the pain was worse and another dose of Castor Oil was forthcoming. I was catchin’ on and I knew a third dose would kill me. Usually the doctor wouldn’t be called until the home remedies had failed.

About now Mama knew it was time to see Dr. Frank Gay. He first took a history and did a physical, but that was back in the old days. His clinical judgment was to operate.

I asked him if that meant cutting and he said, “Yeah.” I

replied, “Maybe we should try the Castor Oil one more time.” After the surgery he brought in the inflamed appendix in a jar and showed it to me. It was the size of a stringbean. I knew he had made a mistake ‘cause what was hurting me was about the size of a cantaloupe.

There were other unusual remedies in South Georgia and North Florida in the 40’s. Around 1946 I developed fever and bumps which Dad and Grandma diagnosed as Chicken Pox. Around 10:00 one night Dad wrapped me in a quilt and took me out to the door of the hen house.

He got inside and shooed the chickens while they flew over me squawking as I squatted and shivered. However, later it was obvious to me that Dad and Grandma were bright people. The Chicken Pox had disappeared within 2 weeks.

Most of ya’ll probably had the good fortune of missing the hot mustard plaster treatment to the chest for colds and chest congestion. One night while laying around wheezing, Mama brought the mustard plaster into the dark room and missed my chest by 2 feet too low.

Mama heard my scream and the screen door slammin’ simultaneously as I was leaving. They found me 1 hour later in the hen house. The therapy for Chicken Pox had worked so well I was hoping it would help the mustard plaster pain and whatever else was ailing me.

Medical knowledge has certainly increased since Grandma Williams’ time. Grandma had her remedies which she passed on to her kids. She also encouraged her grandkids to do better. At the time of her death, the 7 grandkids carrying her coffin were M.D.’s. At that moment I felt very humbled. With all that medical knowledge of me and my first cousins, we could not help Grandma.

Whether we are dealing with the home remedies of the old days or the sophisticated medicine of the 21st century, we certainly have our limitations. If love for her could have healed her, Grandma would still be with us today.

HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD AND THE OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD The Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Alliance will host our nineteenth annual Celebration Awards Dinner on March 26th at the FSU University Center Club, in honor of Doctors’ Day. At the event, we will be awarding the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, a prestigious award initiated by Capital Health Plan, and the Outstanding Physician Award.

The criteria for the awards differ. The criteria for the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: treating all patients with respect and dignity. Dr. Harrison was known as the voice for the ethical, compassionate practice of medicine. He is not only the inspiration for the award, but its first recipient, as well.

We are seeking nominations from the CMS membership as both of these awards are awarded to physicians by their peers.

Dr. Lockwood asked all CMS Foundation Board Members in attendance to stand and be recognized for their service.

II. Tonight’s Program – this is a 1-Hour Category One Program Topic: Women are from Venus; Men are from Mars; Sexual Dysfunction on Both Planets Speakers: Andrea Friall, M.D. and Kenneth DeLay, M.D. Drs. Friall and DeLay gave an informative presentation on sexual dysfunction in women and men.

CME Proof of Attendance Forms will be sent to participants who stay for the entire CME program and fill out an evaluation form. Please turn completed evaluation forms in at the end of the program.

CME REQUIREMENTS FOR RELICENSURE

CME REQUIREMENTS FOR RELICENSURE The Florida Department of Health in conjunction with the Board of Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine sets the CME requirements for physician licensure in Florida. Each Board specifies a certain number of hours, including a few mandatory topics, that must be completed within each two-year license term.

Half of Florida allopathic (MD) licenses expire January 31st of every even-numbered year and the other half expire January 31st of every odd-numbered year. All osteopathic (DO) licenses expire March 31st of every even numbered year. Visit www.FLhealthSource.gov to verify a Florida license or confirm a licensure expiration date. Choose Licensee/Provider, then License Verification.

MD CME Requirements

First Biennium Renewal: If you are renewing your license for the first time you are exempt from the general CME requirement and are only required to complete 2 hours of Preventing Medical Errors and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. Rule 64B8-13.005, Florida Administrative Code, requires the Prevention of Medical Errors course contain Continuing Education (CE/CME) Requirements the five most mis-diagnosed medical conditions in Florida for REQUIRED REQUIRED the previous two years. Each licensee or certificate holder shall complete a board-approved, 1 hour continuing education course on human trafficking. The course may be included in the total general hours required and must be completed by January 1, 2021. Required in accordance with Section 456.0341, Florida Statutes. *Note: The 1 hour of Human Trafficking is included in the required general hours.

NOTE: The Domestic Violence course must be approved by any state or federal government agency, or nationally affiliated professional association, or any provider of Category I or II American Medical Association Continuing Education. The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $105.4 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2018-19, which ended June 30, 2019, more than $7.4 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $50,000 was awarded in 2019. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2019, the CMSF awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to Elder Care Services for their In-Home Services Program, the Big Bend Hospice for bereavement services, and the Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide clients who have vision loss with the aids needed to manage their health and medical care independently.
