CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD AND THE OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD The Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Alliance will host our eighteenth annual Celebration Awards Dinner on March 28th at the FSU University Center Club, in honor of Doctors’ Day. At the event, we will be awarding the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, a prestigious award initiated by Capital Health Plan, and the Outstanding Physician Award.

The criteria for the awards differ. The criteria for the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: treating all patients with respect and dignity. Dr. Harrison was known as the voice for the ethical, compassionate practice of medicine. He is not only the inspiration for the award, but its first recipient, as well.

We are seeking nominations from the CMS membership as both of these awards are awarded to physicians by their peers.

Harrison.

Dr. I.B. Harrison has always personified the best of our medical profession. During his lengthy career in the Tallahassee medical community, Dr. Harrison taught and influenced many local physicians. He was known as the voice for the ethical, compassionate practice of medicine. Dr. Harrison’s ability to look at all patients, rich or poor, with the same compassion, caring and skill has been an inspiration to many who as he was treating illness, and to teach young doctors to do the same; treating all with respect and dignity.

Welcome – Dr. David Dixon, President, called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Dr. Dixon called for a moment of silence for Dr. Nancy Van Vessem and FSU student Maura Binkley who were murdered on November 2nd. Dr. Dixon thanked Westminster Oaks for use of their incredible facility.

Dr. Dixon reported that the CMS Foundation recently published its Annual Report in the

November Cap Scan. He thanked the members for their support through donations, volunteering in the We Care Network, and attending the Holiday Auction. Dr. Dixon asked all CMS Foundation Board Members in attendance to stand and be recognized for their service.

IV. Special Announcement – Strategic Planning Goals 2019 Dr. Dixon announced that the Board of Governors met in September to review the strategic goals of CMS over the past year and to develop goals for the coming year. Dr. Dixon reported that we accomplished many of the goals set in 2018. The goals developed by the Board for 2019 were made available to members.

Topic: Health Effects of Common Electronic Devices Speaker: Alice Pomidor, M.D. Dr. Pomidor gave an informative and engaging program on common electronic devices and their health effects.

Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $98 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2017-18, which ended June 30, 2018, more than $8 million in health care was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $42,000 was awarded in 2018. ➢ Gifts to Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to health care for the underserved. In 2018, CMSF awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to Elder Care for their In-Home Services Program, Alzheimer’s Project for caregiver support resources, and Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide clients who have vision loss with the aids needed to manage their health and medical care independently.

Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam: You can make a donation to the CMS Foundation in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone, such as a fellow physician, you hold in high esteem or has taken care of you or your family. CMS Foundation will send an acknowledgement letter to those you memorialize and honor.

How to Give: Through the generosity of donors, funds have been created in order to establish financial stability to meet our mission.
