CMS WELCOMES MEDICAL STUDENTS AT FSU REGIONAL CAMPUS On June 1, 2026, Dr. Amy Neal, CMS Secretary/ Treasurer and Tom Block, CMS Executive Director, joined the incoming third-year medical students at the Florida State University College of Medicine – Tallahassee Regional Campus for their orientation.

OBESITY MEDICINE + LIFESTYLE MEDICINE—SAME TEAM, DIFFERENT PLAYBOOKS

By Amy Neal, M.D., MBA When I graduated from FSU College of Medicine (COM) in 2008, I didn’t expect obesity medicine to become one of my favorite parts of primary care. But after enough tough visits (you know the ones) and some excellent mentoring, I leaned in, got board certified, and started noticing something encouraging: obesity medicine, lifestyle medicine, and primary care are much more aligned than they sometimes sound. Lifestyle medicine came later, when I felt I was missing some information about not only weight loss, but longevity, health span.

While family medicine—still caring for the only immortal unit in medicine, the family—is the backbone of my training, these two other specialties help me support happier, healthier families.

Two frameworks, one goal Obesity Medicine Association (OMA): “Four Pillars” • Nutrition therapy • Physical activity • Behavioral modification • Medical interventions (medications and/or surgery when appropriate) OMA’s model focuses on treating obesity first and recognizing it as its own disease—one that often drives many others. I think of obesity as a basement problem: there’s little sense in remodeling the kitchen if the foundation is cracking. With the arrival of more effective obesity medications, it has become even clearer that addressing this one issue can create many other positive ripple effects for patients (and yes, a few negative side effects too).

Lifestyle medicine: “Six Pillars” • Nutrition • Physical activity • Restorative sleep • Stress management • Positive social connection • Avoidance of risky substances Lifestyle medicine is often framed around longevity, prevention, and sometimes disease reversal (for example, diabetes or hypertension) through a real “therapeutic dose” of lifestyle change. These recommendations are the greatest hits of good health—things we all know we should do—but when used prescriptively, they become surprisingly specific and powerful.

Patients are often rewarded with significantly better health from something that sounds almost too simple, like moving bedtime up by an hour.

Where the overlap is strongest (and most practical) 1) Nutrition: the shared center of gravity At a recent national Obesity Medicine meeting, the keynote speaker pointed out that the most consistent, cutting-edge nutrition advice is... not exactly flashy: • Prioritize vegetables and whole/less processed foods • Choose high-fiber options when possible • Aim for adequate protein (ideally from lean and/or plantbased sources) • Reduce ultra-processed foods and trans fats There are still debates (dairy/eggs/red meat, low-carb vs plantforward, etc.). In practice, I’ve found the most productive “common ground” is helping patients move away from ultra16

processed foods and toward consistent, repeatable meals they can actually enjoy.

2) Sleep: the underrated clinical intervention we’re all short on Sleep is a major area of overlap and, candidly, one where physicians are not always the gold standard. Most of us are no longer sleep-deprived because of call schedules—we’re sleepdeprived because of bedtime procrastination and “just one more chart.” For many adults, the goal is at least ~7 hours, and quality matters just as much as quantity.

3) Stress management: lifestyle medicine calls it out; obesity medicine lumps it in the behaviors pillar Stress is a common trigger for overeating, poor sleep, and sometimes the very medications that can contribute to weight gain. The good news: small, realistic interventions can help—short walks outside, music, paced breathing, or a phone call to a friend.

What this means in a busy primary care practice In clinic, it’s easy for the conversation to drift toward medications—especially when patients arrive with direct-toconsumer ads already bookmarked and a plan. Medications can be appropriate and life-changing for the right patient. But the most sustainable wins I see come when we keep the pillars in view: • Start with one lever the patient is willing to pull (often protein/fiber, steps, or sleep timing).

• Make it measurable (small goals beat vague intentions).

• Long Game—this is chronic disease care, not a 30-day challenge. Chip away at it.

• Use medication/surgery as tools, not as substitutes for the basics.

A local note (and a nudge) Here in Tallahassee, we’re short on primary care capacity, and we’re all short on time during visits. That’s exactly why these frameworks help: they give us a shared language and a way to stay comprehensive without turning every visit into a 45-minute TED Talk.

One of my ongoing goals is to keep sharing practical approaches for integrating obesity treatment and lifestyle medicine into traditional primary care so we can help patients reduce risk, reduce medications when appropriate, and feel better doing it. Think about what might make this easier in your own practice. Would a new intake form help? A few educational handouts? Sometimes the next best step is not revolutionary—it’s just ready by Monday.

Bottom line: No medication works well without attention to nutrition, activity, sleep, and stress. The good news is that when we combine these tools thoughtfully, patients often start to feel real momentum—and we get to spend less time pushing uphill and more time celebrating progress.

Physician & Family Wellness Day JUNE 6, 2026 THE PICKLE PAD The event exceeded our expectations, welcoming 119 attendees of all ages for a day filled with fun, wellness, and family-friendly activities.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including wildlife encounters with the North Florida Wildlife Center; stretch sessions provided by Stretch Zone; balloon animals and pendulum art by BJ’s Party House; airbrush tattoos by Hartworks: Face & Body Art; a photo booth experience courtesy of The Photo Fun Booth; chair massages provided by Susan Morgan-Smith, LMT; and a delicious taco bar provided by Crave Social Eatery. And, of course, there was plenty of pickleball fun throughout the day!

PEYTON CRUTCHFIELD, M.D. RECEIVES CMS FOUNDATION’S JULIA REVELL ST. PETERY, M.D. SCHOLARSHIP IN PEDIATRICS On behalf of the Capital Medical Society Foundation, FSU College of Medicine Tallahassee Regional Campus Dean Dr. Kerwyn Flowers awarded the Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics to Peyton Crutchfield, M.D. on May 15, 2026 at the Florida State University College of Medicine Annual Awards Ceremony.

The named scholarship honors the late Dr. Julia Revell St. Petery who passed in 2021 and commemorates her passion for the practice of pediatric medicine and her humanitarian spirit and determination to provide all children the same access to healthcare. FSU College of Medicine’s Pediatric Clerkship Directors nominate a recipient annually, and the Capital Medical Society Foundation (CMSF) awards the scholarship based on its criteria.

Dr. Crutchfield has matched in Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

SWEENEY IRIZARRY PEREZ, M.D. RECEIVES CMS FOUNDATION’S J. ORSON SMITH, M.D. SCHOLARSHIP IN INTERNAL MEDICINE The named scholarship, honoring Dr. J. Orson Smith, was created by an anonymous donor in recognition of and admiration for Dr. Smith’s passion for the practice of medicine and advancing the health of the underprivileged.

FSU College of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors nominate a recipient annually, and the Capital Medical Society Foundation (CMSF) awards the scholarship based on its criteria.

On May 15 at the Florida State College of Medicine’s Annual Awards Ceremony, Dr. J. Orson Smith announced the 2026 J. Orson Smith, M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine recipient is Sweeney Irizarry Perez, M.D.

Dr. Sweeney Irizarry Perez, who was not able to attend the ceremony, is the fourth ever recipient of the Dr. J. Orson Smith M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine, and is headed to the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Jacksonville to complete his residency in Internal Medicine.

ERIC DELGADO RENDON, M.D. RECEIVES THE CMS FOUNDATION’S 2026 ACCESS TO CARE AWARD, IN HONOR OF ROBIN MCDOUGALL On behalf of the Capital Medical Society Foundation, Robin McDougall awarded the 2026 Access to Care Award that bears her name to Eric Delgado Rendon, M.D. at the Florida State College of Medicine’s Annual Awards Ceremony.

The CMS Foundation’s Access to Care Award is named for Robin McDougall, LCSW, who advocated for increased access to healthcare as the Program Coordinator of our We Care Network for 14 years. The We Care Network is the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s program championed by local medical physicians and dentists who donate medical specialty care to local low-income, uninsured patients.

Dr. Delgado Rendon is set to begin his residency in Otolaryngology at the SUNY Health Sciences Center.
