LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP The theme of our program today is “Activating the Promise of Democracy.” We are grateful to welcome Bakari Sellers to join us this morning in community conversation to reflect upon the legacy of Dr. King and to inspire our collective work forward.

Atop the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in August 1963, Dr. King shared his Dream with gathered civil rights supporters, including several folks sitting in this room today, and the nation, in which he mused on “the promises of democracy.” Months earlier in April 1963, imprisoned for leading a peaceful protest without a permit, he penned his Letter from Birmingham Jail to local clergymen who criticized his activism, in which he also referred to “the promise of democracy.”

In both, Dr. King declares, “Now is the time to make real the promise(s) of democracy.” The promise he references time and again is that of the Founding Fathers when they drafted the Constitution to guarantee all men the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But it is a promise that excluded Black Americans from fair participation in a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

Yet, in the same breath as he acknowledges this unjust history, he invokes hope. Dr. King envisions the nation rising to a “sunlit path of racial justice” built on the “solid rock of brotherhood.” He sees the path forward from darkness to light paved by Black Americans and allies using their voices for change.

This is our hope for today, especially coming into a highly charged election year. As our nation continues to reckon with its history of injustice, we must find the courage to remain sound and stand alongside one another in our resolve to activate the promise of democracy. To find inspiration in the path Dr. King and civil rights activists laid before us, to lift our voices through civic engagement, and to keep showing up for a future where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not just for a golden few, but for everyone.

PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS Michael Fuller Michael Fuller co-anchors WGAL News at 4 p.m. and reports for the 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts.

A Philly suburb native, he previously worked for news stations in Connecticut and South Carolina. Michael is a Hofstra University graduate, and previously held internships at the Today Show and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Gregory Medina

Alicia Blanco

Gregory Medina is a 15-year-old McCaskey High School student. He runs varsity track and has always had a passion for music and singing.

His goal in life is to eventually make and produce his own songs. Gregory led the performance of Lift Every Voice at Crispus Attucks’ Juneteenth celebration in 2023, and we are thrilled to welcome him to share his talent in front of this larger audience.

Alicia is currently in her fourth year at Manheim Township High School and will receive her diploma in June of 2024. She is an alumnus of Attollo Prep, a local leadership development organization. Alicia has spoken at many open mic events around the community and is also a musician, a writer, and an activist.

Robin Stauffer As Executive Director of the High Foundation, Robin works with the High Family and Board of Trustees to identify and align with community organizations that support constructive change within areas of identified need, and to develop its own projects that generate beneficial social and environmental impact. With a heart of service and a spirit of collaboration, High Foundation’s mission is to build bridges to opportunity for individuals, organizations, and communities, striving for an equitable world of beauty, prosperity, and peace. The Foundation also assists High co-workers in meeting the costs of college education for their children through a competitive scholarship program.

Robin is a member of the Board of Lancaster General Health Foundation (2021 – present), and a past Board member of United Way of Lancaster County (2003 – 2021) where she served on the Executive Committee and as an inaugural member of Women UNITED. She chaired the annual County-wide Campaign in 2008. Robin was recognized with Thaddeus Stevens College Distinguished Service Award (2022), the Central Penn Business Journal’s Women of Influence Award for Community Achievement (2014), and more recently was inducted into its Circle of Excellence (2019), a new award that recognizes women at the pinnacle of their careers and/or lifetime achievement.

Pastor Nate Gantz Nathaniel Gantz is a Lancaster city native and Pastor of The Outpour Church in Lancaster and Atlanta, GA. After spending 13 years in the metro Atlanta area, he relocated back to his roots. He is building a congregation in the heart of Lancaster at the Crispus Attucks Community Center that centers on having a heart for community.

The Rev. Shayna J. Watson With a background in hospice and hospital chaplaincy, The Rev. Shayna J. Watson is a priest in the Episcopal Church of the Anglican Communion, currently serving as the Associate Rector at St. James Episcopal Church, Lancaster, under the leadership of Rector, The Rev. David W. Peck. As a community activist she serves on various boards that advocate for children and youth, the arts, and racial and gender equality. Rev. Watson is the Creator and founder of ΘeoCon (pronounced Thee-Oh-Con): Where Theology Meets Pop Culture Convention, one day comic book convention-style event, a first of its kind.

SPEAKER BIO: BAKARI SELLERS Two-time NY Times best-selling Author, Civil Rights Activist, Attorney, Entrepreneur, Legislator, and overall Prolific voice of the Culture, Bakari Sellers continues to build upon the strong legacy he inherited as the son of Gwendolyn Sellers and civil rights leader Cleveland Sellers. While his dad helped shape movements working alongside Stokely Carmichael, Bayard Rustin, and Malcolm X, Bakari has come into his own helping to write the blueprint for today’s movements with the likes of Rep. James Clyburn, Attorney Benjamin Crump, and President Barack Obama.

Bakari forged his own path from very early on. He entered Morehouse College at the age of 16. He went on to become a graduate of the University of South Carolina Law School and he became the youngest legislator in the South Carolina state legislature at 22. He carries this mantle of success with the right balance of gravitas, style, generosity, and humility-a nod to his humble beginnings in Denmark, SC where “please and thank you” are the chief currency in town. In penning both his memoir My Vanishing Country and a children’s book entitled “Who Are Your People?,” Bakari pays homage to the working-class values that encouraged him to “dream with his eyes wide open” and that are the predicate for his persistent fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the US and abroad.

A CNN analyst, Bakari also brings an ability to elevate discourse such that people always feel one step closer to a solution or resolution after he speaks. He combines these and many other talents in his new podcast, The Bakari Sellers Podcast which airs two times a week on the Ringer Podcast Network. Sellers has also been an attorney with the Strom Law Firm, L.L.C. in Columbia, South Carolina since 2007, where he heads up the firm’s Strategic Communication and Public Affairs team and the DEI Consulting practice.

He is married to Dr. Ellen Rucker-Sellers and they are the proud parents of three children.

WHO WAS CRISPUS ATTUCKS? Crispus Attucks (c.1723—March 5, 1770), our namesake at the Center, was the son of an enslaved man from Africa and a Natick Indian woman, and in 1750, he fled white ownership to Boston Harbor where he became a sailor on trading and whaling ships. Frustrated with unjust British practices, he joined a group of men in protest to confront British soldiers; however, the confrontation ended in his death and that of four other men, to be known as the Boston Massacre and the spark of the American Revolution.

Our promise to our community is to embody the spirit of Crispus Attucks the man, who was not afraid to stand up for what he believed. And reinvigorating what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., called the “moral legacy” of Crispus Attucks as it translates to the Center and to our work in civic engagement honors his quest for freedom and bravery in the face of injustice.

ABOUT THE CRISPUS ATTUCKS COMMUNITY CENTER Since the 1920s, the Crispus Attucks Community Center has strived to improve the quality of life for youth and families in Lancaster by providing services that promote community prosperity, and by offering programs and cultural events which celebrate and preserve the African American heritage. The Center is located in the southeast quadrant of Lancaster City, a collection of neighborhoods home to the highest concentration of poverty in all of Lancaster County.

Current activities at the community center include: YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OF COLOR (YPOC) The Young Professionals of Color Network (YPOC) creates community for the Black and Brown young professionals collective while providing opportunities and a safe space for conversation around civic and social issues, as well as ongoing educational opportunities and personal and professional connection. CRISPUS ATTUCKS FOOD BANK Twice a month, we provide nutritious and wholesome food to members of the community at our food bank. The food bank is open every second and fourth Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m.

CRISPUS ATTUCKS CAFÉ Crispus Attucks Community Center provides free lunches every Tuesday and Thursday from Noon to 1 p.m. at the Crispus Attucks Cafe, which is located at the rear of the building. No ID or registration is required, making it accessible to everyone.

CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS AND OBSERVANCES The Center is committed to presenting community-wide cultural events, in addition to the MLK Breakfast, including Black History Month, Crispus Attucks Day, Juneteenth and Kwanzaa.

ESSENCE OF HUMANITY The Essence of Humanity Award is intended to recognize those individuals who - beyond the requirements of their work - demonstrate remarkable courage, love, strength, determination, encouragement, inspiration, and persistence when dealing with adversity, and to recognize those who demonstrate the spirit of caring and provide inspiration to such individuals on a daily basis. This award is made possible by the High Foundation.

DR. LEROY HOPKINS, nominated by Gerald Wilson Dr. Leroy Hopkins is a native of Lancaster and graduated from McCaskey High School.

He spent the early part of his career as Associate Director for Program and Planning and then Acting Executive Director of the Lancaster Urban League.

Dr. Hopkins graduated from Millersville State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in German and Russian and holds a Ph.D. in Germanic Languages from Harvard University. From 1979 to 2015, he taught German at Millersville University, retiring as Professor Emeritus of Foreign Languages.

He currently serves on the MLK Breakfast Committee, and has served on multiple nonprofit boards including Crispus Attucks, Lancaster County Library, LancasterHistory, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hopkins served on the Black History Advisory Committee of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as well as the Pennsylvania Humanities, and is a past president of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania.

From his nomination: “Dr. Hopkins is a well-known face in the Lancaster Community because he is a tireless activist educating us all about the past and the future we face. At age 80, he hasn’t slowed down; he continually strives for informal education through lectures, media, and the personal exchange of ideas.”

GERALD WILSON, nominated by Dr. Leroy Hopkins Gerald Wilson grew up in Southeast Lancaster City and graduated in 1971 from McCaskey High School. He joined the Lancaster City Bureau of Police as a Cadet, where he became involved in many civic activities, including working with the first pancake breakfast benefitting Crispus Attucks when the breakfast was served on the basketball floor of the Center. He also helped start the Lancaster Boxing Club at Crispus Attucks.

In the 1980s, when drug addiction was increasing in Lancaster, Gerald was part of a group of neighbors who opened Hogar Crea, a drug rehab in the first block of Green St. Fighting addiction on two fronts, Gerald was promoted to Sergeant and took charge of the Selective Enforcement Unit targeting drug dealers infecting the city’s neighborhoods. Gerald retired in 1997 as Shift Commander, with the rank of Lieutenant. Following retirement, Gerald taught Criminal Justice at McCaskey High School for 14 years. He also worked as a Forensics Instructor at Berks Technical Institute and instructed Photography, Genealogy, and Digital Photography at Millersville University’s Ware Center.

Gerald received his teaching certificate from Penn State University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Elizabethtown College. Gerald served on the Board of Directors of the Lancaster County Historical Society, volunteers on the Elm Street Steering Committee at SACA, and is a past board member of the Lancaster County Blind Association, Crispus Attucks Community Center, SouthEast Lancaster Health Services (now Union Community Care), and the Urban League.

RUBY PAYNE COOK AWARD Ruby M. Payne Cook served for nearly 30 years as the first Executive Director of Crispus Attucks Community Center. This award was established in memory of her commitment and dedication to the Center and the African American community. It is given annually to those who have dedicated their time and energy to serving the Center and the surrounding community.

JUDGE JODIE RICHARDSON Judge Jodie Richardson serves as a Magisterial District Judge in Lancaster City. Prior to being elected as Magisterial District Judge, Judge Richardson was employed for 23 years with the PA State System of Higher Education at Millersville University and for four years with Lancaster County Domestic Relations.

A champion for the community, she holds many volunteer roles including Board Chair for SACA Development Corp., Board Member for ADVOZ and the President’s Commission on Cultural Diversity and Inclusion at Millersville University, and she proudly serves on the MLK Breakfast Committee, which directs today’s event.

Judge Richardson graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School, the Consolidated School of Business, and with honors from Millersville University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology. Judge Richardson is a lifetime resident of the southeast sector of Lancaster City. She is the daughter of Floretta “Flo” G. Richardson and the late Charles C. Richardson, Sr. known to many as “Teddy Rich.” She is the youngest of her parent’s seven children, the mother of Marcus and Myles, and the grandmother of Elias and Mila.

REPRESENTATIVE ISMAIL SMITH-WADE-EL Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El was elected to the PA Legislature in 2022 and serves on the following House committees: Education, Finance, Housing & Community Development, Human Services, Local Government, and Committees. Before his election at the state level, he served as President of Lancaster City Council and worked for several years in the nonprofit sector, most recently as a Program Specialist with the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition.

A graduate of Carnegie Melon University, Rep. Smith-Wade-El fought for grass roots change in his community as the Vice Chair of the Lancaster County Democratic Party and raised his voice for many important issues including fair wages and benefits for unionized workers and fair funding for public schools. Rep. Smith-Wade-El is a past member of the MLK Breakfast Committee and shared the Breakfast’s appeal for several years.

Rep. Smith-Wade-El’s inspiration for his life and work as a public servant is the example of his mother, Rita Smith-Wade-El, who was a professor at Millersville University, a union member, community organizer and single mom. His mom always made a point of helping others, even when she had little for herself. She taught him that when you have something to give, you give it, and if you don’t have it to give, you go get more to give.

ATTUCKS LEGACY AWARD The Attucks Legacy Award is given annually to an individual who has exhibited bravery and strength, and whose personal and/or professional work has advanced equity for Black and Brown individuals in Lancaster County.

I made one of the best decisions in my life in 1980; I was straight out of college and bought a house at 255 South Ann Street. Coming from a 99.9 % Caucasian farming community in Pigeon, MI, and then attending a mostly white high school for my two last years, followed by a white college, I made a conscious decision to live among the students I wanted to teach at McCaskey High School, which was a much more multicultural environment than I had ever been exposed to.

My mentors were Papa Boots, Tommy Hyson, Teddy Darcus, Billy Bennett, Skip King, Peachy Boots, Betty Thompson, Nelson Polite, Buddy Glover--and these are only a few of the adults who had a huge personal impact on my life. We played basketball at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club together, we taught together, and we worked with youth together. We not only talked about Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech--we lived it out.

I have truly loved every day of my life in Southeast Lancaster. I have lived and worked here except for our seven years in Colombia, South America, where I spent time with Mennonite Central Committee planting Mediation Programs in schools around Colombia.

Another way my international and local efforts came together is when in the ‘80’s I was part of the Overground Railroad program connected with LINCARA (Lancaster Interreligious Network of Central American Refugees Association.) Over a period of five years I housed 25 Central Americans for 3-6 months who were heading to Canada but needed paperwork.

My greatest achievements have nothing to do with any awards I’ve earned. Instead, these derive from my time walking alongside thousands of Lancaster’s youth, helping them (and they, in turn, helping me) improve our quality of life: helping to organize block parties and dressing up as a clown; going on hiking and canoeing trips with young men hanging out on street corners near my home; starting the REACH club in 1987 to help students at McCaskey feel like they were part of a family and helping these students separate issues at home from their career goals and strive for excellence in all areas of their lives; starting a mediation program in 1990 at McCaskey, including mediating between parents and their children in their homes; supplying families with refrigerators and other furniture; and most recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking school iPads to students and visiting homes daily to help students meet their graduation requirements.

My highest mission in life is to help all people feel valued and loved. I have truly loved EVERY student I’ve interacted with—in the halls of McCaskey, as well as every youth/adult who has walked the streets of this city that I have had the honor of supporting and mentoring during my career in the School District of Lancaster. I am proud to call all of them my brothers and sisters.
