HOW ART CAN HEAL AND EXPAND HORIZONS

n a recent Wednesday morning, six students gathered around the table in art teacher Donna Bonavia’s AP Studio Art classroom and talked about how they had used art to overcome a variety of challenges and obstacles, including gun violence, homelessness, and depression.

shot three times. The third time they pronounced him dead, but he came back. They brought him back,” he said.

“But at that time, I couldn’t speak,” he explained. “So, all I did was sit down in the house and draw.”

Curtis is one of 12 students in the senior AP Studio art class at Ballou High School, many of whom say they use art as a tool to cope with their emotions and what is going on in their lives. It’s only one way that art is being used in District schools, where art is increasingly used to teach much more than how to draw. Students are using art as a social emotional tool, to learn subject matter in other classes, and as a support system throughout their school careers.

Social and Emotional Learning

The art room in Ballou High School is filled with student works. Paintings line the walls and lean against windows. Students sit hunched over their work at long tables spattered with paint. Not all of them are formally enrolled in the class. Ms. Bonavia keeps an open door, and many of the artists spend their free time in her classroom, creating. One night they had a sleepover, laying their sleeping bags out on the tables.

Ballou senior Khalyl Harrison is a painter who creates bold, high-contrast work that incorporates text as well as images, Harrison said that his art lets him express himself.

Harrison spent part of his childhood in New York, moving from house to house and occasionally sleeping on the street with a friend. Sometimes, he said, they would eat out of trash cans. He put his feelings about that period of his life in a painting. The work also contains imagery that he says shows the way his mind works. “I think different from other people,” he said. “So, I just basically put it down in a picture.”

Senior Na’Kiya Butler is a skilled painter. In her junior year at Ballou she earned an honorable mention from the Scholastic Art Awards. Her works, which range from realism to expressionism, express emotion in the form of portraiture.

She said she asked to join an art class in the ninth grade because she wanted to actively create. She was fighting depression at the time, and wasn’t speaking to anyone. Art, she said, was the only way for her to speak.

Butler said that her art has been critical to this struggle.

“Dealing with depression is really hard. It’s this dilemma that you can’t get out of. Pills don’t work, nothing works, unless you find a way to express yourself.”

An Aide to Test Scores

At Bridges Public Charter School (100 Gallatin St. NE), kids are using art to learn other subjects, such as science, social studies and English.

They do this through art integration projects that are specially designed to teach them both an art form and the course content. Art can also be used to help students engage deeply with subject matter across the curriculum.

Last year, Bridges PCS Arts Integration Coordinator Kristen Anclien helped the fourthgrade class make a Science Tool Coloring Book that helped students learn about scientific instruments and techniques for line drawing.

Anclien said that art integration projects increase student engagement because students learn better when they are doing than when they are passively listening to a lecture. They look more closely at the content while they are learning about it, and remember art projects better than traditional lessons.

“They need hands-on opportunities and they really crave the ability to create things on their own, and I think that’s why arts integration is so successful,” she said.

student performance, Anclien said. However, in a time where test scores are so linked to school performance, she finds herself having to convince people that art is useful in teaching core content.

“People do get nervous, and it’s my job to convince them that arts integration isn’t in spite of raising test scores,” she said, “but that it’s actually an aide in raising test scores.”

A Pathway for Youth

Other students are dancing their way to success in school. The CityDance DREAM program provides academic support, crisis intervention and college-preparation along with dance instruction to youth living in highpoverty DC neighborhoods.

The DREAM School for Dance (2042 Vermont Ave NW ) opened in 2017 and is currently attended by about 60 DC students in grades three through twelve. It offers training five days a week in ballet, modern dance, traditional and contemporary African dance. It is rigorous instruction, and students must pass an audition and an interview before they are admitted.

The school requires students to maintain a 2.0 GPA or better at school. If grades fall below that mark, academic support is offered. College prep is introduced in eighth grade and is emphasized the summer between sophomore and junior years.

DREAM also offers family engagement services, including crisis intervention where necessary.

“One of the primary reasons that the school was opened was to create an institution of excellence for students who are marginalized, who are disenfranchised, who don’t have schools or institutions of excellence available to them,” said Darby.

Schools throughout the District continue to recognize the value in integrating art education

into more traditional academic teaching and subjects. Recognizing the potential role that arts education can have in student life – even if students are not naturally inclined towards artistic expression – can help open up new avenues towards both academic success, selfdiscovery, and emotional well-being.

VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS LINK STUDENTS WITH DC’S ECONOMY

T

he DC skyline is dominated by cranes. The region patronizes its high-tech hospitals. And, its schools attract students from around the nation. Amazon is about to draw 12,000 additional tech workers to the DMV. DC Public and Public Charter Schools face a fundamental challenge in providing a path to the well-paying employment provided by these growing economic sectors.

Once thought of as the ‘company town’ for the federal government, growth in the District’s private sector now accounts for one out of every three jobs.

Information technology, early childhood education workers and the construction trades are among the top listed jobs in the District Department of Employment Services (DOES) 2019 ‘Hot Job’ list of high demand occupations through 2026.

Here are three ways that District schools are ensuring that students can fit into the District economy through Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Construction

You can see the plumbing through open walls at Phelps ACE High School (704 26th St. NE). In spots, you can see where the electrical wires have been laid, and incomplete brickwork is visible in others. Students cluster around to examine these areas, pointing to places that of interest and talking between them.

These sites of incomplete work throughout the school are no accident.

The design features are carefully planned to be used as lessons in construction best practices. Photo: Courtesy IDEA PCS there is a construction labor shortage. According to the U.S. Labor Bureau, there were 434,000 vacant construction jobs in America in April 2019. The Phelps program is one way that District schools are helping to connect students with these jobs.

Students in the construction trades can get hands-on experience in carpentry, electrical, sheet metal, welding or in the field of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration.

Each program ends with a capstone project. Students graduate with a college prep diploma and industry certifications, ready to move on to an apprenticeship program that would prepare them for a career in the construction trades.

As part of their training, students do site visits and job shadowing with companies, receiving practical experience and training. For instance, Clark Construction worked with Phelps to develop some of the specialized programs at the school, implementing a safety training course through which students received certificates from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Staff have real experience working in the construction fields.

Instructor Barry Walters was an HVAC technician for 21 years before turning to teaching.

Walters said this is the time to get into the construction trades.

“We don’t have enough technicians. It’s a place to make money, work with your hands,” he said in a video interview Phelps student Paul Childs. “You’re going to get hot, you’re going to get cold, but you’re going to make money while you do it.”

He said HVAC involves aspects of many construction fields, including electrical, plumbing and carpentry and tremendous variety on the job.

Field said that while students should consider going on to college and furthering their education, he recommends that they get on the job right out of high school, even working as they go through college.

“That’s when you’re going to learn the most,” he said.

Information Technology

It is dark in the sophomore computer science career academy class at H.D. Woodson (540 55th St. NE). The faces of the students are lit by their individual screens, but they are staring raptly at a projection at the front of the room that displays a mosaic of colors. It isn’t right, and the class has to make it work.

This is no art project, however.

The students are learning to use a colorful block editor to program a mobile app. It’s the entry level class in the school’s Information Technology Career Academy.

Educational non-profit National Academy Foundation (NAF) partners with 21 DCPS high schools to offer NAF academies, small learning communities within the school focused on growing industries.

Over the next three years the information technology students

will complete a three to four course career pathway in addition to their core academic courses, as well as to work-based learning opportunities, college prep, and internships beginning in the junior year.

The computer science pathway prepares students for careers as systems analysts, app developers, network administers, network architects and support specialists.

Workers these with technological skills are needed in all of the economic sectors that drive District growth, including the government, which is the largest consumer of technological service in the world.

They are also needed in private settings such as universities and hospitals. That need is only expected to grow in 2023, when Amazon will open its second HQ in Arlington.

Senior Michael Prather has a brother who works for Amazon, but he said he chose the Information Technology Career Academy because of his own interests.

“I just always had a thing for computers and games, so that’s why I was drawn to it,” he said. However, his interests have switched.

“Right now, I’m taking cyber security,” he said.

There are few jobs in information technology that a student can take on right out of high school, and the Career Academies at H.D. Woodson include college tours as part of the curriculum, assisting students with applications. Prather intends to continue with his education, planning to major in computer science and minor in psychology at Morehouse College.

Child Development

A few weeks ago, students in the Child Development Associate (CDA) program at IDEA Public Charter School (1027 45th St. NE) went on a site visit to Educare Child Development Center (640 Anacostia Ave. NE). While they were there the tour guide pointed out a teaching assistant working

SHOULD YOUR CHILD GO TO SPECIALTY CAMP?

I

f you attended camp as a kid, you might have memories of canoeing, roasting marshmallows over open fires, archery lessons, crafting and overnights in rustic cabins. Those general camp offerings of mixed activities still exist, but they are becoming eclipsed in popularity by week-long sessions of robot building, modeling or cooking classes as more and more children are spending their summers in specialty camps.

What Is A Specialty Camp?

Lauren Kasnett is cofounder of Summer 365, a complimentary consultant service that helps parents navigate camp choices for their child. She says a specialty camp focuses on one topic, often with a unique approach, location or subject. In the DC area, campers can spend their summers pursuing their interest in almost anything from sewing to STEM, from computers to cooking and from sailing to modeling.

Specialty sessions offer campers the chance to take a deeper dive into their favorite topics. For instance, a general camp experience might include horseback riding.

At Camp Horizons equestrian camp for kids aged 8-16, all activities, including crafts and games, are centered on horses. Campers spend up to three hours a day riding, and other activities are tailored to help them learn about horses, including stable management, care and grooming and preparation for horse shows.

Is My Child Ready For A Specialty?

Kasnett says that because specialty camps are so centered on one topic, often working progressively through the week to a final product or a shared goal, you need to ensure your child is committed to the camp topic. “You really have to have a sustained interest to focus in a specialty camp,” she said.

“If your kid is wanting to bounce around, they might be better suited to a more general camp,” she said.

She said that specialty camps often skew older than general camps. “Specialty camps usually gear a bit older, middle school and beyond. But there are elementary school kids with a particular passion where it can be ap-

propriate. Everyone knows their own kid best.”

More important than the age consideration, she said, is the ability of the program to accommodate your child’s needs. “A lot of camps do serve a range of levels, whether you are a novice or intermediate,” she said. “Understand how campers will be grouped, whether according to skill level or age group, and if that will work for your camper.” For instance, if a computer programming camp groups according to age rather than skill, an eight-year-old who is already independently programming could be bored and unchallenged for the week.

At the same time, Kasnett said that a lack of experience shouldn’t necessarily stop a camper from registering. “I don’t think being a

novice is a barrier to entry at all,” she said. “That’s a benefit of going to a specialty camp: to take a deeper dive and focus on it in a more meaningful way.”

Together with your child, you will determine if they are ready for overnight camps, which generally take campers beginning at around seven years of age, or if a day camp is better suited to your needs.

As you narrow in on potential camp choices, it is advisable to check if they are ACA accredited.

ACA’s accreditation process is an independent safety audit evaluating up to 300 standards of camp management and programming.

It is also a good idea to reach out to the camp staff, especially the Camp Director.

“Understand what your goals are for the camp, location, your budget, the areas of interest in camp programing,” said Kasnett.

“But also —and maybe more importantly— consider your child’s personality and interests as well as the way the camp compliments

your family values.”

Kasnett says campers do overnight as early as eight years old; grades three and four are a common entry point. Past sleepovers can be a clue that they’re ready for overnight camp, but are not the only signposts. “Showing independence in afterschool programs, or a budding interest in independence are both clues,” she said.

“Overnight camp is one of the most important parts of the summer experience; it’s a total break and time away from technology.”

Whatever you choose for your child’s summer camp experience, the different experience and new friendships will be an education that will last a lifetime.

“Camp is an opportunity to do things kids are not doing in school year,” said Kasnett. “Overnight and summer camps in general are one of the greatest classrooms without walls.”

CHOOSING A PRESCHOOL

Assessing Your Child’s and Your Family’s Needs

W

ashingtonians are fortunate to have a variety of types of preschools from which to choose. There are free, public Prekindergarten (PK) available starting at age three, private stand-alone preschool programs, and private schools that start at preschool. District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and charter schools both offer full day, full school year programs that are usually attached to elementary schools and even middle/high schools, giving the possibility of securing up to fifteen years of a free quality education. Joining a private school at the preschool level can secure an entrance into a learning community that, again, can last through middle and even high school. Conversely, there are private programs including parent-run cooperatives and teacher/administration-led programs that serve kids for just a year or two before Kindergarten.

Public and Private Options

Public schools all require full school day, full week attendance. Private schools that offer PK vary in their hours with some partial day/ week and others full day. Private preschool programs are usually only half day, fewer than five days a week. This part-time schedule requires further coverage for the typical working family so is often not an option for them. But families with stay at home parents or caregivers often choose to put a preschooler in a partime program for recreation, socialization and just having fun with other kids.

While public preschool is free, the cost of covering care during summer, winter, and spring breaks, professional days off, and before and aftercare, can easily top $10,000 a year. Similarly, care must be secured outside of private school hours, at an additional cost, if parents require full time coverage.

Choosing the Right School

be location. Always look first at schools in your neighborhood and balance the quality of your child’s, and your, life given the commute.

Think long and hard before signing up for a long commute that gives your child more time in a car and less time playing.

When visiting a school, first and foremost you should look for a place where everyone looks happy, adults and children. Kids should have as much choice and freedom of movement in their activities as possible. Plenty of whole body movement and especially outdoor time are important. Overt academics are not necessary in preschool and should be limited.

Kids should be engaged and the focus should be on positive guidance rather than negative discipline.

Classrooms should be organized and wellmanaged, but should also look like kids spend the day there. Amenities such as a nice playground and a library are great, but a creative teacher can work around deficits in facilities.

A teacher who is clearly content to be there and eager to show off her classroom to visitors is likely to be an excellent indicator of a positive experience guide for your preschooler.

Likewise, a satisfied, engaged parent population can help create a more successful school.

There are several preschool educational models on offer in Washington. Some, such as Montessori, differ greatly from a typical preschool and parents should understand what the approach is before signing their student up. Student-led models such as ReggioEmilia contrast with the teacher-led Creative Curriculum. Expeditionary programs get kids out of the classroom on a routine basis. Online research and classroom visits can give parents a good sense of what might be their best fit.

Navigating School Applications

Entry into DCPS and charter schools is by lottery only. The Common Lottery includes almost all such schools and can be accessed at www.MySchoolDC.org. Information about

schools, lottery and waitlist results, videos that explain how the lottery works, and the actual portal to apply in the lottery are found here.

Up to twelve schools can be ranked. Rank in the order that reflects which schools are most desired to the least. Initial selection and waitlist offers go by this order.

The application is due by March 2, 2020, with results released on March 27. Families have until May 1, 2020, to accept a space and enroll and then the waitlists start moving. Waitlists typically move throughout the summer and into the school year. There is no “gaming the system.” Research schools, do your due diligence, make your list, and cross your fingers.

Private preschool applications can vary in complexity. Some have deadlines by which to sign up, but no application process. Others require an application, educational testing done by a specialist, playdates and interviews, and teacher recommendations. Parents should follow the application processes of these schools carefully as entry can be very competitive.

Regardless of what type of school is chosen, keeping a positive attitude about school and learning is what is most important. A fortunate lottery number can lead to an elementary through high school education at one of the best schools in the city, but there are multiple options for a good preschool experience.

As long as kids are happy and active, many different environments can serve them well.

The scale of this 23-room house at the National Museum of American History is one inch to one foot, accommodating the miniatures that Faith Bradford (1880–1970) played with as a girl and collected as an adult. Bradfort imagined the dwelling as the turn-ofthe century household of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Doll, their ten children, two visiting grandparents, five servants and twenty pets. Bradford’s fascination with miniature furnishings began at age 7 when she inherited her older sister’s collection and four-room dollhouse. When the dollhouse fell apart from wear and tear, her mother had shelves built into Faith’s bedroom clothes closet. The new dwelling with plenty of play space and “imagination for walls.” In 1932, Bradford created a shelf-like model to display her “house” at a charity toy fair in Alexandria, Virginia. The same figures, fixtures and furnishings inhabit the model that Bradford created and presented as a gift to the US National Museum in 1951. americanhistory.si.edu.

The Big Meow

They are a program of DC Public Schools and serves any child that goes to DC Public Schools, is home schooled, or has not yet entered the school system.
