Still Organizing

These days, Pannell is still organizing, still living in his apartment, even as the pandemic upturns the country and the world. For now, he’s moved the ACC’s activities online.

“I actually wind up being involved in more meetings now,” he said. “Some days, I have literally started virtual meetings at eight o’clock in the morning and will be online until after sunset.”

Though Pannell said he has no hobbies — a regrettable fact he attributes to long work days spent organizing for the ACC — he’s a life-long mentor to many.

“Philip has been instrumental in every young elected person’s life, to get them to where they are,” Wilson said. “If they really look back and if they’re honest with themselves, they can credit Philip Pannell.”

Friends frequently mentioned Pannell’s sense of humor, both for its power to mobilize and spark joy. A few years ago, Wilson organized a Philip Pannell roast, and over 500 community members showed up to poke fun at Pannell’s big personality. “People really cracked up,” Wilson remembers.

Pannell is also a loyal friend, especially to Dixon. Pannell would babysit the daughters of Dixon and his former wife, third District mayor Sharon Pratt. And Dixon gifted Pannell, a musician, his brother’s old ebony clarinet. Dixon peppers his description of Pannell with candid adjectives: smart, sincere, dogged, committed. He called Pannell his best friend.

“We’d love him,” Dixon said. “I love him. He’s a special guy, and it’s impossible to recognize him enough for what he does.”

(Nehemiah Dixon, continued from pg. 41)

From 2016-2019 Dixon then formed his own company called Nonstop Art. He was contracted by several organizations to produce community-engaged arts programming including creating a community maker space at Oxon Run Manor (which was previously covered by East of the River), work at various Prince George’s County elementary schools with artists Leslie Holt and Tsedaye Makonnen, and public programming at Brookland Manor Apartments.

During this time, after attending an annual Art Table event titled “State of Art DC”, Dixon met and connected with Director Dorothy Kosinski of The Phillips Collection. He learned about an opening at The Philips Collection and decided to seize the opportunity. Earlier this year, he went through the interview process leading him to become Director of Community Engagement for the respected institution. Dixon’s career has now come full-circle.

Scientists like to forward the old adage that “chance favors the prepared mind.” In Dixon’s case, creating a vast network of people has provided opportunities as an artist and as an arts administrator. But these people are not just anyone. According to Dixon, these are people who you love, who support you and who are, as Dixon puts it “your greatest cheerleaders,” like fellow artists Mark and Denise Wamaling. Within his network, Dixon also credits his success to Margaret Boozer, co-director of Red Dirt Studios, another person who has had a profound in uence over him. In his spare time, Dixon continues his artistic practice at Red Dirt in Mount Rainier, MD where he maintains a studio.

Ultimately, it was one of Dixon’s professors at MICA whose words he never forgot when he told his students “the people you meet after school will become your network; choose them well. These are the people who will help you grow and nd opportunities.“
