PILLARS OF CAPITAL CITY PRIDE Mission
Capital City Pride (CCP) is a 501(c)3 organization that brings together the members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community along with their friends, allies, and supporters. We do this by producing events that inspire, educate, commemorate, and celebrate our diverse community and culture with and for the greater Des Moines metro.
Education
Create a culture where learning and innovation are celebrated.
Provide and promote learning opportunities to LGBTQ+ individuals, community members, and allies.
Enables us and our community to learn and appreciate diverse people, cultures and backgrounds.
Platform to share our history, current issues and future vision.
Health & Wellness
Create free, safe, and accessible outlets for positive physical and mental health and wellness opportunities.
Critical given health disparities in a marginalized community.
Collaborate with organizations specializing in health and wellness services.
Celebration
Create spaces where LGBTQ+ people feel comfortable, safe, uplifted and celebrated. This is not just Pride Fest. This is a year round effort.
Family
Believe in all types of families, biological or chosen, and celebrate the different meaning that holds for each of us as we share life and love.
Celebrate families through events and activities that embrace our differences and highlight our common threads.
Create environments for families to come together, share, feel supported, connected and safe.
Community
Build a strong sense of community to create connection and belonging.
Provide a platform for LGBTQ+ and allies to be able to find themselves, feel safe and supported.
Be a space to cope with personal and societal challenges, while offering the comfort to come together and celebrate our uniqueness.
On behalf of the entire Capital City Pride team,
IT IS OUR PRIVILEGE TO WELCOME YOU TO OUR 45TH ANNUAL PRIDEFEST!
Last year we welcomed more than 45,000 people to Des Moines for PrideFest, which serves as a beautiful mixture of a community celebration, cultural festival, and defiant protest of a people who refused to be erased. In whatever ways you show up to participate this year, we welcome you!
In celebration of our 45th year, we have an amazing lineup of events, entertainment, and opportunities to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, we are thrilled to unveil our new “Pride Corner” art installation at the intersection of East Grand and 5th. Designed by local queer artists, Cat Rocketship and Dani Awesome, this corner is an example of the spirit of Pride that is grounded in visibility. For years our team at CCP has said, “Visibility is education,” and this new art installation, as well as the expansion of our Pride Flags across the Locust Street Bridge, are ways we are showing that our LGBTQ+ community, our friends, and families stand arm-in-arm to celebrate our Pride.
As we celebrate, it’s also important to appreciate those who work every day to make positive impacts on our LGBTQ+ community. Again this year our community faced historic attacks. Legislation was introduced and passed into law in the State of Iowa allowing anyone to refuse to provide services to LGBTQ+ people because of strongly-held religious beliefs. This does not align with the most basic values we teach our children about kindness toward others, and it sharpens our focus on the need for us to continue to come together to make our collective voices heard. Given this faithbased attack, it is also important to note that we are also grateful to the many love-centered spiritual communities from this region who are here at Pride and who serve as a safe, spiritual home for many of you in our community. While we stand against religious
intolerance in any form, we are grateful for our justice-oriented religious friends who persevere with us.
In supporting our community, we strive to create safe and welcoming spaces where all people feel a sense of community and belonging. We work to ensure that everyone in the LGBTQ+ community not only has access to what we do but sees a little bit of themselves in the programs and spaces we provide. This goes beyond Pride Week and PrideFest. We offer diverse yearround programs and events throughout the year, believing Pride is something that must be celebrated every single day.
This year, PrideFest weekend and the larger month of Pride will once again feature some of our most popular events such as the Pride Walk, I-Cubs Pride Night, Mr. Ms. Mx. Teen Pageant, Drag Brunch, The Silent Disco, Family & Youth Zone, Pride Stride, Health & Wellness Zone, Pet Parade, Teen Zone, Pride Parade, and a new Pet Pride Day at Paws & Pints!
Finally, we extend a BIG thank you to the neighbors and businesses in the East Village, the city of Des Moines, all of our sponsors, volunteers, vendors, entertainers, and, of course, all of you who come out to celebrate and support Capital City Pride. We couldn’t do this without you! Again, thank you for participating in this year’s PrideFest!
Sincerely,

Empowering futures. Changing lives.

COMPANY OF THE YEAR
Serv’d Events

Recently celebrating their third year in business, Serv'd Events is an LGBTQ owned central Iowa business that focuses on providing and producing queer events such as drag shows, immersive experiences, drag brunches, and other events that benefit queer artists and the LGBTQ community.

PERSON OF THE YEAR
Max Mowitz (he/they)
Max is the Program Director for One Iowa and has been key in the reinventing One Iowa's Leadership Institute.
Max empowers queer leaders in our state, develops and executes training to improve workplaces, and is dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ Iowans. Max founded the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund, ensuring that money gets in the hands of trans and non-binary Iowans to get the care they deserve. In addition, Max started "Max the Doula," a service where Max provides free support to trans and non-binary folks as they explore their gender identity and pursue gender-affirming care.

ALLIES OF THE YEAR
Ashley & Ryan Stien
Ryan and Ashley display a community-minded life. This is made evident through the way they engage with their passions of supporting the queer community, lifting up those going through cancer treatment, and advocating for animal welfare. They believe all should be welcome and cared for and have a safe space. Ryan and Ashley have been longtime partners of Capital City Pride, building one of the most beloved PrideFest events, the Pet Parade.
