FOLDING GOOD LUCK INTO HAPPINESS Artist turns hobby into meaningful gift for hospital

Something appeals to her about that particular origami shape, and she loves the calming, almost meditative effect of the practice, she said.

So much so that she decided to fold hundreds of them, in a rainbow of colors, which eventually became the base material for a dramatic paper crane chandelier in her dining room. “I’d heard that folding 1,000 paper cranes brings good luck,� Hodges said.

Luck aside, she knows the birds make people happy. “I started folding them and leaving them for people. It’s hard not to smile when you get one of these,� she said. “And it makes me feel just as good to give them.�

When she heard about Woman’s Hospital’s Bust Breast Cancer Fashion Show fundraiser, where artists decorate bras for a runway show to raise money for Woman’s, she decided to create a paper crane bra.

Santa visits St.George area to aid charities Advocate staff report The St. George Fire Department’s annual Santa Claus parades continue Saturday and Sunday in the department’s service area.

The parade, which features Santa atop a firetruck and agencies collecting food and toys, kicked off Saturday in south Baton Rouge and continues this weekend in the neighborhoods between Airline Highway and the Mississippi River on Dec. 13-14.

If you missed Santa last weekend or don’t see him this weekend, food and toy barrels are located at every St. George Fire Station.

Saturday’s parade begins at 10 a.m. and Sunday’s parade will begin at noon.

The department is partnering with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and Christmas for Challenged Children, a local faith-based group that helps make Christmas merrier for children facing chronic or life-threatening medical issues.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the tradition, Santa Claus will parade up and down the streets of each subdivision in the St. George Fire Protection District on top of a St. George fire engine. Following the firetruck will be a truck from the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, and following it will be a vehicle from the Christmas for Challenged Children organization.

“We urge all to please have your donations bagged and ready by the door so when you hear the truck coming down your street, you can hand it to the appropriate volunteer in the trucks behind the fire engine,” a news release from the department said. “For safety’s sake, please do not approach the firetruck and try to hand your gifts directly to Santa or the firefighters.”

The Food Bank will accept nonperishable food goods or contributions by check made out to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

The Christmas for Challenged Children organization will collect new and unwrapped Christmas gifts and personal toiletries for children ages infant to 17.

Scout donates American Braille flag to veterans home

sgill@theadvocate.com Catholic High School sophomore William Martin, a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 7 and current president of the Louisiana Society Children of the American Revolution, chose to place a permanent, bronze, American Braille flag at the Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jackson as part of his community service project in pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout.

The effort also served as a project for LSCAR, according to his mother, Desha Martin, who is senior president of the organization.

Martin’s project, a requirement in obtaining the ranking, is in line with Boy Scout ideals of helping people at all times and the ideals of the LSCAR, which honors the United States flag above all others.

According to William’s research and the World Health Organization, about 11.4 million people are blind or visually im-

Desha Martin said the Scouts who assisted her son also are working their way to the ranks of Eagle Scout and earned a communication merit badge in the process, which requires making a presentation before a group.

William Martin was guest speaker at the flag’s unveiling and presented a check to Gus Freche, assistant administrator at the veterans home. The check represents the remaining funds donated to Martin’s project.

Refreshments were served at a reception following the ceremony, and gift bags were given to residents of the veterans home.

Martin says the Braille flag came into prominence in 2008 after it was officially recognized by the 110th U.S. Congress under the American Braille Flag Memorial Act. The flags placed at the five war veterans homes in Louisiana will be among 50 sites around the nation to install a bronze American Braille flag in honor of the country’s 1 million blind veterans, Martin said.

Arlington National Cemetery and the 9/11 memorial museum in New York also have bronze Braille American flags, he said.

The Jones Creek Area Business Association’s annual Christmas Parade, “Christmas on the Creek,” is set to roll Sunday starting at 2 p.m., said John Kovalcik, past president and Webmaster for the JCABA. The 2014 grand marshal is state Sen. Bodi White.

Part of the parade’s tradition, Kovalcik said, is to choose a king and queen who have either undergone treatment for illness at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or are in treatment there, in honor of a few families in the neighborhood who have had experiences with the hospital. One of the business owners in the association suggested they choose a special pair of patients to ride as royalty.

This year, JCABA crowned Queen Chandler Payne and King Daniel Rowe.

The parade started about 12 years ago originally as a July 4 parade, but the heat prompted a move to Christmas after the first year, according to the JCABA’s website.

In 2012, the parade had over 75 entries, and it has become one of the largest privately held Christmas parades in the greater Baton Rouge area, the site said.

The parade was canceled for the first time last year due to weather, so the JCABA is eager to get back on the road, Kovalcik said.

The parade starts just north of Coursey Boulevard and Jones Creek Road and runs south down Jones Creek to Tiger Bend. Parking is available all along Jones Creek south of Coursey.

In search of feathered friends

Newer birders would stare through binoculars, frustrated, while Lanka and Seely kept the descriptors coming, until, after a few moments, a gasp, followed by a smile, erupted. “Oh, I see it! I see it!�

This is the kind of thing the women love about birding, especially with new birders.

In addition to black-crowned night herons, the group also spotted flocks of the colorful and compact mergansers, water birds with distinctive white facial markings. Some mergansers also have oblong hoods on their heads.

Also on area lakes are thickbeaked white and brown pelicans, and graceful egrets — both the great egret, which is white and larger with a yellow bill and black feet, and the snowy egret, smaller with a black bill and yellow feet.

Seely and Lanka pointed out a canvass back duck, striking with a creamy white body, dark head and neck, and red eyes, and several whitebeaked coots.

A striking white band on the ring-neck duck’s bill makes them easy to identify from a distance, but the ring on its neck is much harder to see.

The star of the show, however, was a lone juvenile snow goose, who foraged on the edge of the lake near two feral white geese. “It’s unusual to see them alone,� Lanka said, pointing out the light and dark mottled coat that will turn more white after its first year of life. “We’d heard reports that there were two snow geese spotted here,� she said. “I was hoping we’d see one today.�

If you want to learn more about birds and birding, Wild Birds Unlimited conducts periodic bird walks at different locations around the city, Seely said, and Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center also conducts walks on its trails the first Saturday of every month.

Gina Periou loves birds, though it took her a while to catch the birding bug. “My mom was a birder. I remember going out to look for orioles’ nests and talking about the birds in her yard. Every year in spring, she’d say, ‘Oh, my prothonotary’s back,’ (referring to a prothonotary warbler).

She was always talking about one bird or another. “I didn’t care much when I was a teen. I’d roll my eyes and think to myself, ‘Enough with the birds!’ But I would tell the whole world if I had a prothonotary warbler in my yard now,�

Periou said.

She also wishes she’d paid more attention to her mother’s bird expertise.

Periou co-owns Wild Birds Unlimited, a Southside shop that caters to birders of all levels of expertise, and had to learn as she went, she said.

The shop has become a kind of home base for a bevy of knowledgeable customers who stop by from all over south Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, sharing both their expertise and their bird sightings and stories.

“I’ve learned a lot just by listening to what the customers are talking about,� she said, adding that the shop serves as a sort of information clearinghouse.

If a birder wants to spot a particular breed, some customer may have seen one and may be willing to share the location, or give them some good bets.

Sometimes, they work together as bird detectives. “I had a lot of customers come in and ask where the birds were this year,� Periou said. Especially American goldfinches, a species that spends the winter in the south. They are bright yellow in spring, just before they fly back north, but show only faint traces of their signature color now. “Customers reported they could hear them, but they couldn’t see them.�

In general, feeder activity is reported to be below average because of the abundance of natural foods at this time, she said. “We don’t put out birdseed to keep birds from starving. We put out birdseed to get them to come closer so we can see them,� she said. “If they have natural food, they’ll eat natural food, so just be patient. They

Her tips for attracting the birds? “Fresh water. Birds need to clean their feathers in water, and they recognize moving water as fresh water,� she said.

Goldfinches are here, said Gina Periou, but have such abundant food supplies in the trees that they’ve shied away from bird feeders.

So, keep your birdbath fresh and clean, Periou said, and if you don’t have one already, add a dripper or a device that agitates the water to keep it moving.

Keep your bird feeder clean, as well. “Feeder activity will increase as birds eat more, just to stay warm in the colder weather.

They can be drawn to feeders with fresh food, and clean feeders. Suet or suet dough is an excellent supplement to seed blends because it is a high-energy food that gives the birds exactly what they need,� she said.

Put out small amounts of feed at a time until you see the birds eating. “The fresher the food is, the better. They won’t eat old food unless they have no better options. If you have seed from last year, and didn’t keep it in the refrigerator, it may be too old.�

Look for the American goldfinches after Christmas, she said.

After the show, the origami piece caught the attention of the team trying to come up with a way to represent 3-D mammography for Woman’s billboard campaign to promote the service.

The 3-D mammography gives doctors a clearer picture of the breast when checking for abnormalities in the tissue, said Dana Michell, of Woman’s Hospital.

“It’s a perfect representation, if you think about it — from a flat piece of paper to a three-dimensional crane,” Michell said.

Now the paper crane billboards, showing one of the cranes partially emerging from the flat sign, advertise the service all over the city.

“The idea took on a life of its own, I guess,” Hodges said, adding that patients and families waiting in the lobby areas are now able to fold their own paper cranes while they wait.

Stations providing square sheets of pink paper, along with instruction sheets for three different origami projects, are spread out among the magazines at the hospital.

Hodges calls it “art therapy,” but it’s a gift that keeps on giving, even if it gives nothing more than a smile.

“To me, they represent happiness. And if it’s true that folding 1,000 cranes brings good luck, I’ll have more than my share. I’ve folded 1,000 many times over.”

“Always wash your hands before you touch your brother or sister,” Bull said.

That, Cook said, is the part she hopes Auna remembers, but there are two other important rules — always ask an adult before picking up the baby, and touch with the palms; don’t poke with the fingers.

The siblings and parents also went on a tour of the pri-

vate delivery rooms upstairs, saw where their moms would be when the big day comes and learned all the features of the hospital, including the family rooms with a clear view of the lake and its ducks.

The hospital’s design is meant to mimic nature — walls are curved, rather than straight and squared, said Dana Michell,who works in public relations at the hospital. “It doesn’t feel like a hospital, more like a hotel.”

And that is intended to make the whole family feel at home, especially children, though they won’t be able to spend the night.

“Mommy needs her rest, new baby needs rest, and you need rest,” Bull said.
