Just a block from Verot School Road’s new construction lies the neighborhood of Clearview and the home of James Van Way and Kelly Russo. Garages are in front post-car boom, and people treat them like porches, just with all their things inside, like the neighbor across the street who rebuilds vintage cars from nothing. James is no exception. His garage is his studio and houses all his works in progress, many of which will be on view next March at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. In the house since 2007, both are professional artists with day jobs — his is ofﬁce manager for an oil company; she is adjunct professor in architecture and design at LSU, as well as designer and consultant for her own ﬁrm, Kelly Renee Russo Works. The two-story home was built in 1978, and its interior is a

I went back to school, studied graphic design at UL, which I found I didn’t enjoy, but I liked the painting classes.” His skeletons are as arresting as they are irresistible, their simple lines drawn with a touch of whimsy — not the serious memento mori works of the old masters, but something lighter. “It’s been the main thing for the past four or ﬁve years,” he said. “They come from abstraction; I don’t use a reference point — when it starts looking like something, then it becomes a skeleton.” “It’s like when you’re a kid and see something weird and scary, a recognition of fear, that’s where I like my art to be. Playful but creepy,” he ex-

plained. “Skulls are the main thing I’ve done. About 200 — I didn’t just start, they were always there. The show next March will probably conclude them. I’m not retiring the motif, but I want a more child-friendly style. Animals and such.” “I also do a lot of collages and post on the internet. They’ve sold.” The couple finds it harder now to put in that studio time with Ella Cricket Russo-Van Way, their eight-month-old. Her nursery already benefits from her parents’ artwork. “Egrets, anhingas, herons — she has shifted me in a huge way,” said Kelly. “I have to work in shifts now, in more thoughtful ways. I spent a long time doing abstracted flower-type stuff, flowers set in geometric shapes. Last year I started exploring birds. It was my hormonal shift,” she smiled. Paint-spattered stairs lead to her upstairs studio, peopled with Wonder Woman figures. “We’re both child-like for sure,” she laughed. “Architecture is serious business. I love reconfiguring space, doing the adaptive remodel, considering the client as an individual. The contrast is teaching and design is for others, the art is for me. This is my most pure voice.” Russo has taught at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and LSU simultaneously, but with the addition of her daughter, she wanted to spend more time parenting and has been at LSU exclusively since last spring. As for the dreaded I-10 commute? “The solitude is nice. It’s my ‘forest’ moment for myself.”
