Scott sees increased economic activity Former railroad town’s hub still revolves around railroad track, attracts tourists with boudin

Scott began as a railroad town west of Lafayette, so rural at its inception that it became known as “where the West begins.”

Today, the town located on Interstate 10 continues to grow, attracting residents to its historic downtown, schools, new home construction and friendly people, said Mayor Jan-Scott Richard.

“All of these things, when you put them together, makes this a great place to live,” Richard said.

The fourth largest municipality in Lafayette Parish, Scott is home to three lower-grade public schools and Acadiana High School, each focused on particular subjects. L. Leo Judice Elementary specializes in environmental science while Westside Elementary teaches French Immersion. Scott Middle focuses on language arts and the Eureka math program while Acadiana High offers the Academy of Business and Finance.

Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School is also located in the heart of town.

Median house prices range from $150,000 to $200,000, Richard said, but new housing developments may raise that amount. The traditional neighborhood development of West Village is in the works on the southern part of the city off Old Spanish Trail and will include a mix of residential homes, retail, office space and restaurants.

“I think it’s good, diversifies our community,” Richard said. “We haven’t seen a development like this before in Scott.”

Cottage Developers LCC with partners Robert and Jordan Daigle broke ground on the 78-acre development near Provost Road in May. Richard envisions the project to be similar to Robert Daigle’s other Lafayette Parish developments of Sugar Mill Pond and Couret Farms.

“I tell most people that I was born and raised in Scott,” Richard said. “I live where my heart is.”

JAN-SCOTT RICHARD, Scott mayor West Village is estimated to bring in 1,500 to 2,000 new residents within five years, Richard said.

In addition, various road construction has been ongoing in the city with the Apollo Road Extension linking Old Spanish Trail to Dulles expected to be finished in 2020. Additional work on Westgate, Cameron and other streets are in the works, Richard explained.

Other new Scott developments include Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center along the I-10 corridor, a nine-bed, 24-hour facility offering Scott residents emergency care without having to drive into Lafayette.

Scott may be receiving a burst of economic activity, but visitors still come for the festivals, Mardi Gras and boudin. Scott is known as the Boudin Capital of the World and celebrates with the Scott Boudin Festival every spring.

The town’s hub still revolves around the railroad track that began it all. Several businesses are housed inside historic buildings, such as Renaissance Antiques, the Coffee Depot inside the old train station, Uncle T’s Oyster Bar and Scott Pharmacy, which turns 100 this year. Closer to the interstate are numerous restaurants and grocery stores selling boudin and the town’s tourist center, La Maison de Begnaud, located in an Acadian home more than 100 years old.

Above all the town’s attributes, however, are the people, Richard said, “who treat you like family.”

What about adding or caring for plants inside your home? Plants not only spruce up the interior of your home, they can improve your overall comfort. The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration research found that including plants in your home can improve indoor air quality.

If you’re ready to add some verdant energy to your living space, below are tips and ideas to consider.

Select plants optimal for indoors

Don’t worry about watering

Read care instructions carefully for recommendations on hydration. Most indoor plants die from overwatering.

With too much water, the soil gets soggy and oxygen cannot reach the root of the plant. Yellowing plants are a sign you are watering too much.

Get creative with displays There are endless ways to showcase plants. If you prefer to group your indoor greenery think about the arrangement. Group plants in an odd number and select different sizes for an informal, inviting look. If you want your plant arrangement to stand out, incorporate a variety of leaf colors, textures and pots.

Make sure the plants require about the same amount of sun, so your group of greenery looks vibrant year round.
