T
he Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association (“GSW”) has organized safe and family friendly Mardi Gras parades in Lafayette for 86 years, since 1934. Today over 20 Krewes are recognized under the GSW “umbrella.” The Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association serves as a liaison between agencies of the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the Lafayette Sheriff’s Department, and other public bodies and all Krewes that are under the GSLMGA umbrella in coordinating their needs. The Association not only coordinates and stages the parades, but presents the City Ball on Mardi Gras night. The City Ball is open to the public with no admission fee. The Association also produces and coordinates Le Festival de Mardi Gras a Lafayette at Cajun Field with carnival rides and games, a wide variety of live music, great Cajun food. The parades roll right through the festival site so everyone can enjoy all Mardi Gras has to offer at one convenient location. The Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association was established to foster, promote and coordinate Lafayette’s Mardi Gras celebration. The Association is not a Krewe, but is a board of volunteers who produce and coordinate the City Ball and Parades, including securing floats, hiring marching bands, purchasing insurance, and working with area governmental agencies. The Association also produces the “Le Festival de Mardi Gras a’ Lafayette” at Cajun Field. The costs of Mardi Gras – the biggest free party in Lafayette - are borne by the various Krewes and their members, and by the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. The festival is for 5 days starting Friday evening thru to Tuesday.

King Gabriel LXXXV David Aloysius Koke, Junior
D
avid Aloysius Koke, Jr., has been selected by the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association to reign as Gabriel LXXXV, King of Carnival, for the 2024 Mardi Gras season. He is the son of the late Dr. David Aloysius Koke, Sr., and Mary Ruth Billeaud Koke. A native of Lafayette, Mr. Koke is married to the former Elizabeth Jean Busch, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry William Busch, Jr. King Gabriel and his wife, Betsy, have four children: Elizabeth Charlotte Koke, David Aloysius Koke III, Claire Mary Koke, and Henry Hamilton Koke. Mr. Koke is a member of the first graduating class of St. Thomas More Catholic High School and was honored as the first Cougar of the Year at STM in 1983. As a freshman at Cathedral-Carmel High School, he was selected to serve for 3 years on the leadership committee of students to coordinate the union of the two primary feeder high schools, Cathedral-Carmel and Our Lady of Fatima to help form the foundation of St. Thomas More. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he was an active member of Sigma Nu fraternity and served as an officer for two years. He attended Sigma Nu fraternity national conventions, and was instrumental in organizing the convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Koke began his professional career in Lafayette in 1989 with the Dwight Andrus Insurance Agency, now Dwight Andrus Insurance Agency, a Division of HUB International Gulf South. He has been a Certified Insurance Counselor for 33 years, attending numerous conferences and educational seminars during those years. He has built his career helping clients find solutions in the property and casualty insurance marketplace. Forming loyal, lasting relationships with his clients has always been his top priority.
Krewe of Gabriel Mr. Koke is a proud member of the Lafayette community. He was a long-time member and Past President of The Beaver Club of Lafayette and a former board member and chairman of fundraising for the Lafayette Boys and Girls Clubs. In addition, he has made a lifetime commitment to Catholic education in Lafayette, including serving on the Cathedral-Carmel School Board for many years and served as its President. He was a member of the Cathedral-Carmel Foundation, Long Range Planning Committee, and served on numerous fundraising committees for the school. He was also on the St. Thomas More Foundation Board, St. Thomas More Capital Campaign Board, and the St. Thomas More School Board, serving as President in 2015-16. David is also involved in philanthropic activities with Betsy. They are members of the Community Foundation of Acadiana Founder’s Society, the genesis for the present day Community Foundation of Acadiana. Mr. Koke has been a lifelong parishioner of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and has worked in many different positions through the years. First elected to the Board of Directors of the Krewe of Gabriel in 2004, Mr. Koke has served in every capacity, including Commodore in 2014. He is a member of both the Budget Committee and the Nominating Committee and serves as Chairman of the Past Commodores. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Dukes Committee for the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. As a third generation Krewe of Gabriel member, King Gabriel and his family have a long history of Carnival participation. As a child, he participated in the Lafayette Town House Ball. Later he was a member of the Krewe of Bonaparte, serving as a Float Captain. He was a Royal Duke to Gabriel LXIV, Robert Ernest Trahan. His mother, Mary Ruth Billeaud, was Honor Maid to Evangeline X, Mary Virginia Hamilton and his father, David Aloysius Koke, Sr., served as a Royal Duke to Gabriel XVII, Albert D. Miller. His maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Wilfred Billeaud were long standing, active members of the Krewe of Gabriel. King Gabriel’s two daughters were presented as debutantes in the Krewe of Gabriel’s Fall Presentation Ball in 2012 and 2017, respectively. His daughter, Elizabeth, was honored to reign as Evangeline LXXV in 2014 and his daughter, Claire, served as an Honor Maid to her cousin Evangeline LXXX, Madeline Mercer Busch in 2019. Both daughters were Royal Maids in Les Brigands de Lafitte and Elizabeth reigned as the 59th Queen in 2013. In 2006, his son, David, was a Royal Page to Gabriel LXVII, Dr. John Tolson III and his son, Henry, was a Royal Page to Gabriel LXXII, Dr. Bradley John Chastant in 2011. Gabriel’s wife, Betsy, was a Royal Maid in the Lafayette Town House Ball in 1983, was presented as a debutante for the Krewe of Gabriel in 1984, was Queen of Les Brigands de Lafitte in 1985 and reigned as Queen Evangeline XLVII in 1986. His father-in-law, Henry William Busch, Jr., reigned as King Gabriel LVII in 1996. Royal Pages to his majesty are Master Ashton Louis Luke and Master Arthur Townes Ottinger. Louis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Williamson Hynson Luke, Sr. and is in the third grade at Ascension Episcopal School. Townes is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Stuart Ottinger and is in the fifth grade at CathedralCarmel School. King Gabriel is an enthusiastic outdoorsman who enjoys spending time in the marshes and waterways of South Louisiana. He treasures weekends at the camp with his family and friends celebrating the rich culture and harvest that the Louisiana outdoors has to offer. “What a privilege and honor it is to serve as your King Gabriel LXXXV for the city of Lafayette this year. Mary Elise Quoyeser
ueen Evangeline LXXXV, Queen of Carnival, Mary Elise Quoyeser, will reign over the 2024 Mardi Gras festivities in Lafayette, Louisiana. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jared Schwing Quoyeser. Mrs. Quoyeser is the former Mary Kathleen Guilbeau. Mary Elise is the sister of Avery Bellis Quoyeser and Jared Schwing Quoyeser II. Her Majesty is the granddaughter of the late Camille James Quoyeser and Susan Marie Schwing. Her maternal grandparents are the late Karl Gerald Guilbeau and the late Sandra Brown Guilbeau. A native of Lafayette, Louisiana, Queen Evangeline attended Cathedral Carmel School and St. Thomas More Catholic High School, where she graduated with honors in 2023. At St. Thomas More, Mary Elise was a four-year varsity letterman on the girls’ soccer team, winning four consecutive state championships and serving as captain her senior year. She earned First Team All-State, All-Acadiana, All-Metro, and All-District honors all four years. She was involved in numerous service projects and religious retreats and held retreat leadership roles through her participation in Campus Ministry. Her Majesty served as a student ambassador as well as an Options mentor at St. Thomas More. Mary Elise was also a member of the National Honor Society and helped organize Hopefest. Her Majesty was recognized at the Breakfast of Champions and as an AP Scholar with Honors. Mary Elise is an active parishioner at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. As a six-year member of the Rush Academy Soccer team, Mary Elise also participated in the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy. Her Majesty is currently a freshman at Louisiana State University majoring in International Trade and Finance with a minor in Political Science and History. She is a student in the Ogden Honors College, a

proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and an active member of the Women in Business organization at LSU. Mary Elise plans to attend law school in pursuit of a dual JD/MBA degree. Her Majesty’s family has a longstanding history celebrating Mardi Gras. Her grandfather, Camille James Quoyeser, also known as “Quack”, was devoted to Mardi Gras and cherished his membership in the Krewe of Gabriel. He instilled a love of Mardi Gras in his children and grandchildren and was a dedicated float rider for forty years. During his tenure, he served as a Board Member, Duke, Commodore, Float Captain, and Captain of the Ball. In 2011, the Krewe of Gabriel honored Camille for thirty five years of service as the Chairman of the Float Rider Committee. Her great-grandfather, Clement Bradley Quoyeser, was also a member of the Krewe of Gabriel. Her Majesty’s uncle, John Camille Quoyeser, has been a member since 2020 and has served as Float Captain for the past fifteen years. Mary Elise’s father, Jared Schwing Quoyeser, has been a member of the Krewe of Gabriel for seventeen years and served as a Royal Duke in 2022. Her Majesty’s sister, Avery Bellis Quoyeser, was presented as a maid in Les Brigands de Lafitte and served as an Honor Maid for the Greater Southwest Mardi Gras Association in 2022. Her Majesty’s brother, Jared II, served as a Royal Page to Queen Evangeline LXXX. In 2023, Mary Elise was presented as a maid in Les Brigands de Lafitte. Attending the Queen this Mardi Gras season are her Royal Pages, Master Deano Charles Babineaux and Master Charles Howard Fenstermaker IV. Master Babineaux is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Erroll Charles Babineaux, Junior and attends Our Lady of Fatima School. Master Fenstermaker is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard Fenstermaker III and attends Our Lady of Fatima School. The Royal Jester is Miss Avery-Grace Hebert. Miss Hebert is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sean Lee Hebert and is studying nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Mary Elise is delighted to reign as Queen Evangeline LXXXV, Queen of Carnival, this Mardi Gras season. She extends her gratitude to each and every person who has made this experience extraordinary and wishes everyone a safe and memorable Mardi Gras.

en Berthelot is the President & CEO of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission. Within the Tourism industry he serves on the boards of the U.S. Travel Destinations Council, and the Executive Boards of both the Southeast Tourism Society and Louisiana Travel Association. He is a Lt. Governor Appointee to the Louisiana Tourism Development Commission and a Governor’s appointee to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Berthelot serves as chairman of the Louisiana Travel PAC and was Past President of the Louisiana Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus. He is highly active in the local community serving on numerous boards and commissions, including the UL-Lafayette Alumni Council Executive Board, UL-Lafayette Hospitality Management Advisory Board, the Acadiana Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association, Le Centre International Foundation, and the Louisiana Music Museum Committee. He is a founding member of the705 Young Professionals Organization and served as the organization’s charter President. Berthelot is a past board chair of United Way of Acadiana and Downtown Lafayette Unlimited (DLU), and past board member of Junior Achievement, Faith House, Acadiana Regional Development District Board, the Junior League Advisory Board, Louisiana Open, St. Thomas More Alumni Association, Leadership Institute of Acadiana, South Louisiana Community College Foundation, New Hope Community Development, Evangeline Thruway Redevelopment Team, Arts + Business = Culture Fund at the Community Foundation, and the Juvenile Justice Children & Youth Planning Board. In 2005 he was named one of Chase Bank & The Daily Advertiser’s 20 Under 40. Berthelot is a graduate of Leadership Lafayette, Leadership Louisiana, the F.B.I. Citizens Academy, and was a charter member of the Acadiana Regional Board of the Council for a Better Louisiana. He has also coached basketball at Our Lady of Fatima School since 1994. During his time as President & CEO of the Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission, his office has worked to promote Lafayette Parish Mardi Gras across the world as a family friendly celebration. He launched the VIP Mardi Gras Experience in downtown Lafayette designed and marketed toward tour groups, which resulted in visitation growth, and has worked closely with the Greater SW Mardi Gras leadership to secure funding for the organization through the Lafayette Parish Visitor Enterprise Fund. He was also involved in discussions to bring back and helped secure funding for the return of the Friday night kickoff parade. Most recently, he worked with Greater SW Mardi Gras leadership to partner with the Krewe Allons, Lafayette’s newest Krewe as the Friday night kickoff parade partner. Berthelot is a graduate of St. Thomas More Catholic High School and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations. He is married to the former Ashley Bertrand, and they are the proud parents of Briggs, Libby, and Bennett.

very-Grace Hebert is the daughter of Sean and Hope Hebert. She has attended Gerami Academy for fifteen years taking classes including ballet, jazz, tap, leaps and turns, hip-hop, and tumbling. She has been a member of the Classical Connections Ballet Company and Jazz Extensions Dance Company for six years, and Gerami Tumbling Team for seven years which has given her the opportunity to perform at numerous Mardi Gras Balls, UL Basketball games, and community events. Avery-Grace attends the University of Louisiana at Lafayette majoring in Nursing. She is a member of the Ragin Jazz Dance Team and Kappa Delta Sorority. She plans to continue her dance education, competing in sports, and serving her college and community through clubs and councils. Avery-Grace is employed at Gerami Academy of Fine Arts where she is a dancing assistant.

History of the Carnival
T
he story of Mardi Gras & Lafayette’s Mardi Gras celebrations. There are many theories concerning the origin of Mardi Gras. However, it is generally accepted that the observance of Mardi Gras (also known as Carnival) arises from the desire to have a good time before fasting - to eat, drink and be merry - before beginning the period of fasting during Lent. The term “Carnival” is derived from the phrase “carne vale”, which translates to “farewell to flesh”. Fasting is an old custom and during the Middle Ages it was a very serious matter. The consumption of meat, eggs and milk were forbidden during Lent by both ecclesiastical and statute law. Even as late as 1560, laws were passed punishing butchers for slaughtering animals during the Lenten season. Throughout the eighteenth century, the festival of carnival was celebrated across the world, Russia, Africa, India, Persia, England, and throughout the European continent. During this period, the carnival in France was encouraged and sponsored by the French kings. The French Revolution ended the French celebration of carnival. However, early in the nineteenth century the celebration was reinstated by Napoleon with all of its’ former revelry. It is thought that during this time, students from New Orleans, who were attending school in Paris, witness these grand celebrations and brought the idea the celebration of carnival back to New Orleans, and eventually to Acadiana. The first Mardi Gras celebrations in Acadiana were very primitive. The women made costumes for their men to “Courir de Mardi Gras”
(literally translated “Fat Tuesday run”). On Mardi Gras day, these masked men would go from farm to farm knocking on doors, singing songs, dancing, and asking for chickens, rice, and whatever was necessary to make a gumbo. The Captain led the group of maskers and there was much merriment and clowning. They were usually followed by musicians in wagons which also carried the hens and gumbo ingredients they had collected along the way. The culmination was when everyone returned to their starting point and the women made a gumbo with the ingredients. This unique celebration is still going on in the many rural communities of Louisiana, including Mamou and Eunice. Large numbers of tourists from all over the United States and the world come to “Cajun Country” come to participate in the annual “Courir de Mardi Gras” festivities. The first recorded celebration of Mardi Gras in Lafayette was on February 14, 1869 when according to the local newspaper “. . .Clement’s band provided the music in the courthouse. . . “. But the first city wide all future Lafayette Mardi Gras celebrations. The first King was Judge George Armand “Bedon” (High Hat) Martin, known as a “ . . .raconteur, dentist, planter, solon, and genial gentlemen.” Judge Martin reigned as King Attakapas, and on March 2, 1897, he roared into Lafayette on a Southern Pacific locomotive that had been transformed into his royal throne. All future Kings arrived in Lafayette in the same grand manner until 1961, when Herbert Abdalla (the 22nd King Gabriel) used the train for the last time. Judge Martin’s Queen See History Page 23

he Order of the Troubadours Ball was held February 3rd in the Frem Boustany Ballroom of the Heymann Performing Arts and Convention Center. The title of the ball was “ Richard and the Temple of Amun Re” Reigning over the gala were King Richard Coeur de Lion LXXI, Paul Wesley Castille and Queen Berengaria of Navarre Olivia Claire Topham The royal court included Sir Kenneth of Huntington, Royal Knight of the Couchant Leopard, John Creighton Crain and Lady Edith Plantagenet of Aquitaine, Mazie Camille Movassaghi. n January 12, 2024, the Children’s Carnival Krewe of Versailles celebrated its 48th annual ball at Angelle Hall. King Louis Roi de Soleil XLVIII, Beau Thomas Barrios, son of Dr. Dave Joseph Barrios, III and Mrs. Christin Courtois Barrios, and Infanta Queen Marie Thérèse XLVIII, Katherine Ann Saloom, daughter of Retired Major Gregory John Saloom and Mrs. Shari Yount Saloom, called forth their subjects for this year’s festivities celebrating a night of imagination, enchantment, and mystique, as they proudly presented “Mystery Masquerade’’. Past Royalty Cooper Thomas Bishop, King Louis Roi de Soleil XLVII, and Amélie Louise Maraist, Infanta Queen Marie Thérèse XLVII, honored the Krewe of Versailles with their royal presence. Captain Walker Jude Bares, King Louis Roi de Soleil XLVI, and his lovely CoCaptain, Cornelia Fleur Dupré, Infanta Queen Marie Thérèse XLVI assisted the Royalty and their subjects. The King’s Messenger was Taggart Ellis Spell. Royal Attendants were Giuliana Grace Soebbing, Harper Nicole Miller, Joseph Foster Spell, and Arthur Townes Ottinger. Gift Bearers were Caroline Ruby Falgout and Isabella Emma Gagnard. Serving as members of the Royal Honor Court were Shelby Grayce Piasecki, Henry Pierce Perret, Sophia Elizabeth Courville, Douglas Preiss Perret, Samaira Srivastava, Luke James Gagnard, Jordan Adelle Saloom, and Benjamin Gregory Gachassin. Visitors to the Court were Lady Arabella Maria Dupree, Lord William Jay McCormick, Lord Jude Michael Falgout, Lord Grayson Alexander Sibley, Lord Oliver Michael Tadin, Lord Saxon Fisher Hebert, Lord Major Baron Hebert, and Lady Madeleine Sophie Fitzmorris. The General Krewe members represented our most beloved childhood mysteries, legends, and magical characters. The Children’s Carnival Krewe of Versailles welcomed Alyse Latiolais as Mistress of Ceremonies. Entertainment was provided by the Royal Court Jesters, Addison Lea Duplantis and Lillian Grace Arthur from Gerami Academy of Fine Arts, and King Gabriel’s Messenger, Eli Michael Barrios, made a special appearance. A formal dinner and dance at the ULL Student Union followed this spectacular event.

he Krewe of Camelot celebrated its 40th annual ball and pageant on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Cajundome Convention Center Festival Ballroom. This year’s theme was “Once Upon A Time” and was filled with characters from beloved fables and fairytales. Camelot’s traditional stage décor was reminiscent of King Arthur’s Castle constructed with stone wall architecture and elaborate gold drapery with green accents. The Krewe of Camelot’s crest is always proudly placed center stage above reigning royalty. The evening began as Merlin the magician transported guests to a magical place known as Camelot. Captain of the ball, King Arthur XXXIX, Bradley John Chastant III, presented Queen Guinevere XXXIX, Bella Grace Hammack as they took one last walk around Camelot. The reigning royalty were then presented to honored guests. Camelot’s Royal Monarchs inaugurated at the ball are this year’s King Arthur XL, Richard James Picou III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Picou Jr. Queen Guinevere XL, Alise Grace Qaisieh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nader Qaisieh. Sir
Queen Guinevere XL Alise Grace Qaisieh Lancelot du Lac 2024 is Jack Cannon Picou, also son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Picou Jr. Lady Elayne 2024 is Emily Kathryn Eckert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brent Eckert. During the pageant, King Arthur and the Knights participated in a ceremony where each member of the round table was officially inducted. The Ladies were presented to the Royal Monarchs and their Knights of the Round Table. The children of the Krewe presented to Royalty represented beloved characters from classic fairytales such as Hansel and Gretel and The Princess and the Pea. The Knights and Ladies entertained the Royal Monarchs, children of the Krewe, and honored guests with an energetic court dance. The evening ended with the Royal Monarchs, Knights of the Round Table, their Ladies and the children of the Krewe participating in a Grand March. Immediately following the Ball, all members of Camelot and honored guests were invited to a reception hosted by the King and Queen’s families as well as Sir Lancelot and Lady Elayne’s families. The evening festivities ended with a dance for the children of the Krewe and their guests.

History of the Carnival cnnt. was Isure Mcdaniel, and the two royal figures and their royal courts reigned in magnificent oriental robes. King Martin led five other Royal chariots in a grand parade. Following the first Mardi Gras parade, a Grand Ball was held in the Courthouse. The older residents of Lafayette claim this was the finest ever seen. It was not until 1926 that another city-wide Mardi Gras celebration was recorded. Court Immaculta of the Catholic Daughters of America inaugurated the first children’s carnival, the Krewe of Oberon, which still exists today. In 1927, the first Lafayette High School Carnival was held and the American Legion held their first Mardi Gras parade. Louis A. Broussard made the floats for this parade using over 40 yards of gold satin for the Royal Chariot. In 1933, planning for an annual city-wide celebration was started by Stanley Martin, Post No. 69 of the American Legion in Lafayette. In 1934, a city-wide carnival celebration became reality under the leadership of Post members Gaston Hebert, Stanley Martin and Laurent Comeaux, who joined with various civic leaders of Lafayette, including Maurice Heymann and Paul Krauss. The group invited representatives from all the civic organizations to a meeting where the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association was formed. Gaston Hebert was elected President of the Association in 1934 and served as such until 1940. Many credit Maurice Heymann as being the “father of Lafayette’s Mardi Gras” because he underwrote the group’s activities many times until it and was on its financial feet. During these formative years local teacher Lucille Griffin started the Lafayette High Carnival Ball and help to organize the traditions of Lafayette’s Mardi Gras. The first costumes were designed by another teacher at the High School, Miss Inez Neyland. In those days, the floats were pulled by mules and the night parades were lighted by men carrying burning torches. Mardi Gras in Lafayette
thrived from 1934 through 1941. All festivities were suspended from 1942 through 1947 due to World War II. In 1948, the celebration was revived and has been held continuously, with the exception of 1951 (Korean Conflict). In 1949 the Krewe of Gabriel was formed to assist the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. The Krewe was the idea of Dr. James Comeaux, who reigned as King Gabriel in 1950, to serve as an “organization within an organization” and to help Greater Southwest promote Mardi Gras on a larger scale. The first Commodore of the Krewe of Gabriel was F.K. Dowty. Albert Miller was First Mate, John Edward Broussard, Second Mate, Robbie Castille, Purser, H.J. Lagroue, Secretary. Directors included Herbert Abdalla, Dr. James Comeaux, Henry Heymann, Frank Myers and Dr. Edgar Breaux. The City’s Carnival rulers were officially named King Gabriel and Queen Evangeline in 1934 upon a suggestion by Miss Edith Garland Dupre. Those names symbolize the Acadian sweethearts who were separated during their exile from Nova Scotia and were immortalized in the Longfellow poem “Evangeline”. George Gardiner of Lafayette was the first King Gabriel and Mabel Broussard of Eunice was the first Queen Evangeline. In 1958, the Lafayette Mardi Gras Association was created. Their monarchs are King Toussaint O’Overture and Queen Simone Signoret. Unlike some other krewes, Lafayette Mardi Gras’ court and pageants are not limited to members of the Krewe. They hold a grand parade on Mardi Gras day and are well known for outstanding bands and elaborate floats in their parade. Throughout the years a number of private carnival krewes have been formed. They hold private formal balls and select their own kings and queens. Most of the krewes have elaborate floats and participate in one of Lafayette’s Mardi Gras parades.
Krewe of Apollo
T
he Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette presented its Forty-Seventh Annual Mardi Gras Bal Masque on Saturday, January 27, 2024 in the Lafayette Cajundome Convention Center. Approximately 2,100 spectators attended this year’s Bal Masque as invited guests of the Captain, Royalty and the Krewe’s 87 members. Between The Covers was the theme of Bal Masque XLVII. Elaborate, colorful costumes were presented by various krewe members. The costumes represented various titles of books. The National Anthem was performed live by Dextaci, the Forever Miss Gay America 2022, and the presentation of colors was provided by Master Sergeant Angelle Fedeli, Master Seargeant Heath Comeaux, Master Seargeant Jacob Sigue and Seargeant First Class Brandon Andrews. The crest of the Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette was presented for the 47th time. Mr. and Miss Apollo de Lafayette 2024, Michael George and Laxus Chantal, were presented, along with Mr. National Apollo, Zarien Morris, from Birmingham, Alabama. The theme of the night was kicked off by the Captain and the Apollo dancers performing a Great Gatsby themed dance to A Little Party Never Killed Nobody. The opening production number was followed by the regal entrance of reigning King Apollo de Lafayette XLVI, Brent Meche, and Queen Apollo de Lafayette XLVI, Jamie Phillips, majestic rulers of Apollo Pops! from 2023. Returning royalty wore their beautiful, intricately stoned neon regalia, including custom crowns, scepters and backpieces created for their reign. Next, the Captain, Darrell Frugé, representing “The Birds” stepped onto the stage wearing a custom costume complete with a complete feather cape made of coque feathers. He also wore a very airy backpiece that symbolized the black birds circling above his head. The entrance was completed with special effects, including low fog, feathers being shot from cannons and flames on stage. Bal Masque Co-Captain and Krewe Vice President, Ben Boudreaux, represented “The Scouting Guide to Survival” with a backpiece containing a campfire and lantern. His entrance was prefaced with a dance number from the Apollo dancers dressed in scout uniforms dancing to “500 Miles”. One of the Bal Masque Lieutenants and Honor Court Members, Emmanuel Gumbs,

represented “Queen Charlotte vs. Charlotte’s Web” with a costume that intermingled Charlotte from the Bridgerton series and the spider from Charlotte’s Web. Our second Bal Masque Lieutenant, Will Thiele, represented “Book of Spells” with a backpiece containing a spell book, large snake, and various other witch craft items. Other Bal Masque Honor Court Members included Mike Perioux, representing “Sherlock Holmes” with a huge magnifying glass and pipe as his backpiece; Chad Terro and Michael McIntosh, along with Jason Jarreau, as “Valley of the Dolls” riding in on a huge

Other Board Members who also costumed in this year’s Bal Masque included Board Member at Large Chris Terro as “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”, Board Member at Large Taylor Dizor as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, Secretary Sherman Bernard as “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, and Treasurer Jared Eubanks as “Where The Wild Things Are”. Court Members representing other books from the Apollo Library include Jacob Muffoletto as “A Song of Ice and Fire - A Dance With Dragons”, Shane Menkiewicz as “A Song of Ice and Fire – A Game of Thrones”, Robert Gay as “The Frog Princess”, Seth Aymond as “The Cat In The Hat”, Aaron Dufrene as “The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”, Dailey Thibeaux as “The Rainbow Fish”, Andre Carr as “Treasure Island”, and Tommy Nguyen as “Ballad of Mulan”. The tableau ended with the arrival of their majesties, King and Queen Apollo XLVII, rulers of Between The Covers. King Apollo XLVII, Jay Frost, was the Imperial Ruler of Apollo’s “Between The Covers”. The King wore a regal sage green silk Edwardian Cutaway Coat, covered in beaded gold scroll lace, embellished with crystal and aurora rhinestones. His tailored pants

Queen Apollo XLVII, Kevin Doerr, was the Empress of Apollo’s “Between The Covers”. The Queen’s dress was a ball gown with a fitted bodice of sage green silk, covered in beaded gold scroll lace, embellished with crystal and aurora rhinestones. The skirt was panels of tucks to create multi lobes made of kelly-peacock shimmer silk, with aurora rhinestone banding sewn in a vertical pattern. King and Queen Apollo XLVII’s regal backpieces were distinguished with their royal crests, encrusted with aurora borealis rhinestones, backed with sage green ostrich plumes, and flanked by kelly-peacock pheasant feathers. Their beautiful mantels were also encrusted in stones, trimmed in ivory silver fox fur, all while having their royal crest as the focal point. Both King and Queen wore custom crowns of crystal and aurora borealis rhinestones and carried matching scepters in gold settings. The exciting night ended as special guests of the Captain, King, Queen and Krewe were recognized. The party continued in the Convention Center as the Apollo Krewe and guests danced for hours, ending with all krewe members on stage for a “New York, New York,” tradition! Director of the production was Rebecca Landry and the choreographer was Jade Landry Gauthreaux, both of Gerami Academy of Fine Arts. Master of Ceremonies was John “JayCee” Falcon. afayette Mardi Gras Festival, Inc. held its 66th annual pageant at 7:00 PM, January 27, 2024, in the Heymann Performing Arts Center Auditorium. The theme of the pageant was “King Toussaint Visits The Holidays.” Reigning over the festivities were King Toussaint L’Ouverture LXVI, Craig Gregory, I, and Queen Suzanne Simonné LXVI, Kelsie A’Lannie Sonnier. King Toussaint, Craig Gregory, I, is the son of Joe Gregory, Sr. and the late Ezola G. Broussard. He is married to Senetra Guidry-Gregory and is the father of seven sons, stepfather of two, and grandfather of eight. He is the owner of Recherche’ Catering and Decorating Services and has served as pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Branch, LA for 24 years. He has received numerous awards for his social, religious, and political affiliations, including the National Association of Black County Officials Leadership Award, the Father of the Year Award from 100 Black Men of Lafayette, and Distinguished Citizen of the Year in Breaux Bridge, LA. He has served on a multitude of boards, commissions, and committees, including University Medical Center Advisory Committee, Creole Crawfish Festival Board of Directors and Treasurer and Director of prison ministry for the Seventh District Missionary Baptist Association. Queen Suzanne, Kelsie A’Lannie Sonnier, is the daughter of Melissa
Gary Arceneaux and the Late Kenneth Sonnier. She is a graduate of Teurlings Catholic High School and now attends Dillard University where she is majoring in Marketing. She participates in the Thompson Cook Honors program, the DECA program and the Sisters Keeping it Real service organization. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is the recipient of Dillard University’s Presidential Scholarship. The King’s Royal Pages were: Kailon Clark, Houston James Anderson, Travon Mouton, Jacean Jolivette and Kayden Salton. The Queen’s attendants were: Carmen Houston, Addison Sonnier, and Se’Myah Hebert. The narrator for the evening was Nelda Boswell Broussard. President Albert Babineaux, Jr., called the pageant to order, introduced Krewe members and welcomed guests to the annual gala. Lafayette Consolidated Government City Councilman Elroy Broussard, Sr., and Parish Councilman AB Rubin presented a proclamation and keys to the city. Krewe of Xanadu Celebrates Its Thirty-Third Ball– “Xanadu Wishes”

afayette’s largest all-women’s krewe, Krewe of Xanadu, hosted its 33rd Tableau and Ball on Friday, February 9 the Lafayette Cajundome Convention Center. Reigning over this year’s festivities were Queen Xanadu XXXIII Lenora Krielow and King Xanadu

Lenora Krielow joined the Krewe of Xanadu in 2007 and was a member of the 2014 “Xanadu’s Celestial Calendar” court. She is a CPA and earned her accounting degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL-Lafayette). Ms. Krielow is also a licensed pilot and, together with her husband Ed Krielow, has flown to many beautiful places across the country. She has two sons, Jason and Kyle, and five grandchildren. Bryan D. McLain is the owner of McLain Companies, LLC, which includes McLain Homes, Market Eatz, and The Cottages. He has very proudly donated the materials and the labor to build the house for the annual St. Jude Hospital Dream Home® Giveaway for the last 14 years. He is also involved with the Journey House sober living homes for men and women. Mr. McLain is married to Sylvia McLain and together they have seven children – Jennifer, Cody, Austin James, Brandon, Christian, and Candyce. They also have six grandchildren. Established in 1990, the Krewe of Xanadu is based on the Greek God Zeus, the Goddess of Memories Mnemosyne, and their daughters, the nine Muses. Amy Brunet, our Goddess Mnemosyne, served as this year’s Ball Captain. In keeping with our theme “Xanadu Wishes” each muse represented something one might wish for: • • • • • • • • •

he Krewe of Olympus held its 35th annual carnival Ball and Pageant on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Cajundome Convention Center Ballroom. The Ball theme was “Celebrating America”, narrated by Mr. King Ares XXIX A.J. Miller. In attendance was past royalty including last year’s Royalty, King Ares XXXIV Darrin D. Menard, MD and Queen Athena XXXIV Lauren E. Menard. Mr. Matthew Boudreaux sang the Star-Spangled Banner. Ball Captain King Ares XXXIII John Olivier, representing Uncle Sam, ordered the celebration to begin. Introduced to Krewe members and guests was King Ares XXXV Daniel L. Noel and Queen Athena XXXV Darlene M. Noel as the 2024 reigning monarch. The Queen’s granddaughter, Khloe Johnson, served as Page to the royal couple.

The Mayor of Scott, Jan Scott Richard and his wife Diana presented a proclamation from the City of Scott declaring January 20, 2024, as Krewe of Olympus Day. The Greater Southwest Mardi Gras Association extended a special invitation to King Ares XXXV and Queen Athena XXXV requesting their presence to their Ball on Mardi Gras Day, February 13, 2024. After a toast to the reigning royalty, the party began for all krewe members and their guests with music provided by Nik-L-Beer Band.

he Krewe of Victoria held its 30th Bal Masque at eight o’clock in the evening on Friday, February 2, 2024 at the Lafayette Cajundome. The ladies of The Krewe of Victoria celebrated the joie de vivre and Mardi Gras with a tribute to some very special Ladies of Class. The evening was presided over and orchestrated by Dame Commanders, Renee Born Laughlin and Renee Fusilier. The lady’s of KOV and guests danced the night away to the sounds of Louisiana Red. Queen Victoria XXX, Mrs. Shawn Thibodeaux Queen Shaw was born in New Orleans and attended Nichols State University and Tulane University. She joined the Krewe of Victoria in 2017 and has enjoyed the Krewe so much that she served as a duchess in both 2020 and 2022. Retired from banking, she is a member of Lafayette Parish Medical Society Alliance and has also served as President of the board of Directors for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Louisiana. She and her husband Dr. Collin Thibodeaux, have two children, daughter Lexie and son Ash Thibodeaux. Queen Shawn and her husband share a love for traveling, camping, boating, fishing, and hunting.

Prince is the best dad to his two daughters and two sons and is blessed with a total of 8 grandchildren. He is a native of Lafayette and graduated from Lafayette High School. He has been in the machining industry for 43 years and has successfully run his own Mid-South Machine Shop for 10 years. In his spare time, Prince Barry loves learning new music, singing and playing guitar. He also enjoys watching sports, tailgating for Ragin Cajun games, and hanging out at his camp in Butte La Rose.

She attended Mississippi College before earning her Masters of School Counseling from Mississippi State University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Duchess Sarabeth worked in the school system as a school counselor for six year is currently the 5-6 grade school counselor at Milton Elementary Middle School She was named Counselor of the Year for the Lafayette Parish School systems as well as School Counselor of the Year for the State of Louisiana. She will represent the State of Louisiana in Washington DC as School Counselor of the Year.

She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master of Science in Safey Management and will complete her Master of Business Administration program in the spring of 2024. Duchess Alexis had co-authored a research paper selected for presentation at the 2013 American Society of Safety Engineers Professional Development Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After being employed by various CPA firms in the area, Duchess Beverly retired from the City of Alexandria in 2013. Other affiliations of Duchess Beverly include Professional Women’s Exchange and Hope House in Alexandria, Arts Council of Central Louisiana, Alexandria Jaycees as well as Junior League of Alexandria and Lafayette.

Duchess Brooke is a timeless volunteer and was named Member of the Year in 2023 for her many contributions to the Krewe since she joined.

he Scott Business Assocation celebrated its twenty-seventh annual Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the Scott Event Center. The theme for the ball was “Visiting Egyptian Pyramids”. The event center was adorned in shades of gold, red and black. The evening began with the SBA Board members being introduced and serving as revelers! Past royalty was also introduced. Entertaiment was provided by court jesters Marlee Miller and Paisley Trahan. Grand Marshal for this year was Dana Cormier. Dana is co-owner of Best Stop Supermarket. She is married to Lesa and enjoys her Cajun Culture. She enjoys time at her camp in Butte LaRose, cook offs and DJ gigs. Reigning over festivities was King Alexander XXVII Purvis J. Morrison and Queen Olivia XXVII Mary Morrison. Purvis is a native of Scott and the only child of Mary Grace and Joseph Morrison. He is married to Queen Olivia Mary. He is a graduate of Acadiana High School and barber school. He was owner of Morrison Paint and Body Shop then became a Lafayette Parish School Bus Driver. He also owned Top Cuts Barber Shop. Purvis then became a Scott City Councilman and then Mayor of Scott. He also served as Lafayette Council member. Purvis has been involved with SBA and was instrumental in creating the Beganud House in Scott and the Boudin Festival. Currently he is the Chief Administration Officer for the City of Carencro as well as co-owner with his

family, friends and shopping! Miss Scott Ollivia Sonnier served as Royal Maid. Ollivia is the daughter of Chad and Kelly Sonnier. She is a Sophomore at Teurlings Catholic High School. At Teurlings, Ollivia is a Rebel Ambassador and in the Campus Ministries. She strives to maintain her grade average while volunteering. She enjoys camping, boating, and spending time with her family. She loves her Scott community and all it has to offer. Chad Sonnier served as Royal Duke, He is married to Kelly and father to Ollivia. He has five children and six grandchildren. Chad is employed with the Lafayette Fire Department as Hazmat Chief. He is also with the Scott Fire Department currently as Fire Chief. Chad and his wife are co owners of Chadmat Safety Systems. He enjoys camping and
making memories with his family. Junior Miss Scott Cecelia Roberts served as Royal Maid. She is the daughter of Angela Roberts and Ryan Turner. Cecelia is a Sophomore at Acadiana High School. She is also in the Advanced Choir where she enjoys singing. Cecelia is also a member of the Distributive Education Clubs of American where she is learning about business. She loves to work with artistry! Ryan Turner served as Royal Duke. He is the father of Cecelia, Junior Miss Scott. Ryan is the District Chief with the Lafayette Fire Department. The Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association’s Role
T
he association is not a krewe, but is a board of volunteers who serve as the organizing body for Lafayette’s Mardi Gras celebration. The Association coordinates the parades, including securing the floats, hiring the marching bands, purchasing insurance, working the Public Works, Police and Fire Departments, as well as other governmental agencies to coordinate the festivities. The Association also produces the “Le Festival de Mardi Gras a’ Lafayette” at Cajun Field, which is the group’s major fundraiser. Funds raised are used to underwrite the costs of the parades, the City Ball, and other Mardi Gras activities. The Association has no dues and no paid employees (all volunteer). The Association gets no public funds, although the Lafayette Consolidated Government provides many in-kind services. The costs of Mardi Gras – the biggest free party in Lafayette- are bonre by the various Krewes and their members, as well as by the Greater South West Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. Independent academic studies have shown that Mardi Gras, through all of its’ related activities, krewes and participants have an annual economic impact of over $110 million to the economy of Acadiana.
The Official Colors of Mardi Gras
T
he traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple (symbolic of justice), green (symbolic of faith) and gold (symbolic of power). The accepted story behind the original selection of these colors originates from 1872 when the Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff of Russia visited New Orleans. During his stay, he was given the honor of selecting the official Mardi Gras colors by the Krewe of Rex. For the Grand Duke, the decision was simple, and true to his noble roots, he selected the official colors of the House of Romanov. The 1892 Rex Parade theme (“Symbolism of Colors”) first gave meaning to the representation of the official Mardi Gras colors. According to lore, the colors of Mardi Gras also influenced the choice of school colors for Louisiana State University and Tulane University. When LSU was deciding on its colors, the stores in New Orleans had stockedup on fabrics of purple, green and gold for the upcoming Mardi Gras Season. LSU, opting for purple and gold, bought a large quantity of the available cloth. Tulane purchased much of the only remaining color...green.
Mardi Gras Parade Throws
T
oday’s doubloons are usually aluminum and anodized in a variety of colors, depicting the parade theme on one side and the emblem of the particular Krewe on the other. Many of these doubloons later become collectors’ items. Early medallions were much heavier than those minted today and were usually awarded only as ball favors. Other popular throws include long strings of beads and plastic cups bearing the emblems of the Krewes. The traditional cry of parade-goers who are pleading for throws is: “Throw me something, Mister!”

he Krewe of Bonaparte will celebrate its 51st year Monday night with a Royal Court of eleven and more than 1,460 members, their largest membership to date. Led by their Captain, Le Marquis de Lafayette, Mr. Brady Lee Bell, and honoring King Napoleon XLVII and Queen Josephine XLVII, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Joseph Krampe III, they will dazzle and dance the night away as is their Lundi Gras tradition. Queen Josephine XLVII is the former Daphne Carmen Brunet. Royal Maids include Kay Banna Aillet, Holly Menard Babineaux, Lauren Becnel Marsiglia, and Summer Hemsell Viator. Royal Dukes are Blake Andrew Huggard, Brennon Emile LeBlanc, Peter Francis “Beau” Nicolosi, Jr., and Dr. Judson Leigh Penton. Other notable dignitaries being introduced Monday night will include the Krewe’s President, Le Premier, Adam Michael Judice, and his lovely wife, Kate, the President of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association, Millard Charles Peddy, Jr., and his wife, Monique Hollier Peddy, the maids and dukes of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association, and King Gabriel LXXXV, Mr. David Aloysius Koke, Jr. and Queen Evangeline LXXXV, Miss Mary Elise Quoyeser. In addition to the coronation ball, the Krewe of Bonaparte celebrates Mardi Gras throughout the year with multiple social events including a New Member Social, a Fall Cocktail Party, a Pre-Parade Party, the Saturday Night Parade, Mardi Gras Family Day Garden Party, and a Krewefish Boil. This year the Pre-Parade Party was particularly special because it was the first event held in the Krewe’s brand-new float den, a multi-purpose facility that features more than 35,620 square feet of float storage space, including a 14,170 square foot event center. There is an additional 3,000 square foot multipurpose annex for board meetings and Krewe events. The Krewe enjoyed another record breaking parade on Saturday night with 996 riders! Tomorrow night the coronation ball will be held at the Cajundome Convention Center and will include a tableau directed by Rebecca Landry, and music provided by Three Thirty Seven. The stage and royal costumes have been designed by Ted Viator and constructed by Viator and Associates, Inc., Karen Guidry, and Cheryl Nevils.
