Zachary Council District 4 Community news report Mark Miles is running for the Zachary City Council District 4 seat. The 64-year-old Democrat is No. 181 on the Nov. 3 ballot. Miles retired from the Baton Rouge Fire Department after 31 years of service, where he served as assistant chief. He said he worked to strengthen the department’s relationship with the community by launching initiatives such as adopting a school to promote fire safety education and partnering with the American Red Cross to help ensure that homes throughout the community were equipped with working smoke detectors.

Zachary School Board District 8

committed to bringing the same level of dedication and community focused leadership to the Zachary City Council. Miles is the owner of Miles photography Studio LLC, a professional photography studio. He has been married to his wife, Letecia Spurlock Miles, for 36 years. Together they have called Zachary home for nearly 20 years. They are members of Greater King David Baptist Church, where Mark Miles serves as a deacon and is a member of the Mark Miles executive ministry. Mark Miles was appointed to the Zachary Civil SerWith decades of leader- vice Board. He plans to work alongship, public safety experience and a passion for serv- side all members of the ing others, Miles said he is City Council and the mayor

to focus on infrastructure and businesses. He said he is running for City Council “for the same reasons that attracted my wife and me to the city of Zachary nearly 20 years ago. Zachary is our forever home. My vision is for our own version of Perkins Rowe and Juban Crossing: a movie theater, shopping and more activities for families in the city — keeping our families and our taxes in our city. “I will work hard to attract new businesses while promoting our community. I will work with the Zachary fire chief and the Zachary police chief to keep our neighborhoods and community safe. I will work hard today for a better Zachary tomorrow.”

Zachary Community School Board District 4 Community news report Jason Partin, no party, is running for Zachary Community School Board District 4. He said, “Zachary is my home. I was born 47 years ago at Lane where my mother, Jeanne Partin, worked as a nurse. My late father, Joe Partin, taught, coached, and was principal at Zachary High. “I started kindergarten at Northwestern Elementary and proudly graduated from ZHS in 1997 having played on every ball team available to me. ZHS honored me by adding my name to its athletic hall of fame,” Partin said. Partin and his wife, Amanda Weilbaecher, live in Zachary and work as physical therapists. They

Jason Partin have three children: Miles, a senior at Zachary High; Owen, in 10th grade; and Stella, at Copper Mill. “When the founders of ZCSD drew up the geo-

graphical boundaries of our new system, they included every child who would have gone to a school located in the city of Zachary as part of the EBR system,” Partin said. “We didn’t create a city system, we created a COMMUNITY system. The vote to create ZCSD was compelling and enthusiasm was overwhelming. Everyone showed up to paint, clean and move furniture to be able to begin operating schools in the Fall of 2003. I want to find that level of pride and enthusiasm again.” Partin said his competitiveness means “Excellence Lives Here” and “It’s All About the Z” mean something to him. The heart I have for this community and its most important asset, its schools, impels me

to do my part to keep us the best system in the state.” “I promise to show up and participate in every meeting, to listen, question and search for solutions to our problems and to steward our resources for their best use,” Partin said. ““I want to ensure that we have the best available teachers and leadership with all they need to do their best work,” he added. “We need to keep our kids in school to finish their education to provide each of them with the means for a successful life. And we need to maintain schools and facilities for our kids that makes them and all of us proud and competitive. Like you, I want nothing short of the best for my kids and I want nothing less than the best for your kids.”

Community news report Crystal London, 39, with no party affiliation, is running for reelection to the Zachary Community School Board District 8 seat. “It has been an honor to serve the Zachary community over the past four years. I am running for reelection because the work continues,” she said. “When I first ran for School Board, I talked about my belief that public schools are democratic institutions — that the voices of parents, teachers, students, school staff, and community members should matter in the decisions that shape our schools. That belief has guided my first term.” London is an educator with nearly 25 years of experience as a teacher, education leader and educational researcher, including 10 years working in Zachary. She and her husband, Keith, have three children who attend Zachary Community Schools. London said, “I experience our schools as a board member, educator, parent and member of this community.” She said that in her first term, her work has centered on creating opportunities for people to participate, expanding opportunities for students, advocating for students, families and educators, and strengthening transparency and accountability. She said that includes establishing quarterly community forums where residents can receive information, ask questions and share their perspectives; creating the School Board Student Internship Program to give students

Crystal London direct experience with public leadership and civic engagement; advocating for student and family concerns, increased teacher compensation and teacher voice; and bringing academic and discipline data into conversations about where improvements can be made. “My work has included asking thoughtful questions about the decisions before us, championing a comprehensive review of district policies, and building relationships with education leaders and policymakers at the local, state, and national levels to bring ideas, resources, and opportunities back home to Zachary,” London said. “There is more work ahead,” she said. “For me, ‘The Work Continues’ means continuing to listen, ask questions, expand opportunities, support educators, strengthen accountability, and make sure the people affected by our decisions have meaningful ways to participate in our school system.” Her website is zcsd8. org.

Zachary City Council District 3 Community news report Amanda Perry, 44, a Republican, is running for District 3 of the Zachary City Council. She and her husband, Richy, call Zachary home, and have raised five children in Zachary. “Now we have the blessing of watching our grandchildren grow and thrive in this community. Over the years, we have made some of our sweetest memories here, built friendships that will last a lifetime, and watched Zachary grow into a community we deeply cherish,” she said. She is a member of Fellowship Church Zachary, where she said she has an opportunity to serve with purpose and calling. “It is that same sense of purpose and calling that has led me to run for Zachary City Council District 3,” Perry said. Perry said she has spent her 23-year career devoted

Amanda Perry to public service: serving on numerous state, national and international boards, councils and commissions. Her experiences includes professional firefighter, paramedic, educator, state administrator and national EMS leader. She serves as the executive director of a national interstate licensure compact representing 37

member states. “I understand public service, emergency response and the importance of public safety,” Perry said. “I understand the value of strong schools and quality education. I also understand that effective leadership means working alongside people with different perspectives, finding common ground, and respectfully agreeing to disagree, all while keeping the best interests of the people we serve at the core of every decision.” “Richy and I believe that it is time for me to bring the collective experiences of my career home to serve the people of Zachary. This campaign is not about seeking a position. It is about stepping out in faith and answering a call to serve,” Perry said. “I will lead with humility and kindness, but also with the grit, courage, and confidence to ask the difficult questions and make the right decisions for our hometown.”

Zachary School Board District 1 Community news report Dewey Davis, 64, Republican, is running for the Zachary Community School Board District 1 seat. “I am a Christian, a fact that has had a tremendous impact upon my life,” Davis said. Davis is a retiree from the Zachary Community School System. “Having served my entire career in the schools of Zachary, I believe I have a perspective that would not be common among many school board members,” he said. “During my career, I served the Zachary community as a special education teacher, a third grade teacher, a principal and a district supervisor. “I also have four children

Dewey said that during his tenure with Zachary Schools, “I was privileged to work with an incredible group of educators and support staff. I can now see that it was the partnerships with parents, staff and students that shaped my life.” “I think that’s why what you gain through the years is called experience, not just information. I believe the experience I’ve gained can be an asset to our school system and community,” Davis said. “We all have a part to play in moving our district forDewey Davis ward,” he said. I would like to do my part by helping who graduated from Zach- guide our policies, working ary Schools. I have worked with our superintendent, with countless students and and providing direction as their families through the your school board member for District 1.” years,” he said.
