PET OF THE WEEK

Continued from page 1G

Fall heat is a thing

People dressed as maw maws in muumuus take to the streets at the annual Maw Maw Walker in downtown Houma.

Don’t relax summer heat precautions just yet. It may technically be fall, but we are still experiencing temperatures that can put our pets at risk of overheating. Continue scheduling walks for early morning or later in the evening, provide plenty of fresh water and shade, and never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. Remember that pavement can remain dangerously hot even when the air begins to feel more comfortable. If it’s too hot for our bare feet, it’s too hot for a dog’s paws. Preventive measures do not end with summer. South Louisiana’s warm climate means mosquitoes, fleas and ticks remain active well into fall and beyond. That means heartworm, flea and tick prevention should continue year-round.

The Maw Maw Walker has grown to bring thousands of people to downtown Houma.

WALK

Continued from page 1G and by 2024, there were thousands. The Louisiana Travel Association named it Event of the Year in 2025, the Houma Times reports. Merlos said the event has grown each year and credited social media videos that went viral with helping draw people from across the region. Last year, Lafayette media star John Weatherall III, commonly known as Mr. Weatherall, attended the Maw Maw Walker, and his videos went viral, so Merlos said they are expecting even more people rocking muumuus and canes to descend upon the city square. Live music from the Starmadillows, a raffle, costume contest and dancing begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 3 in the Courthouse Square, 7856 Main Street, Houma. Then, around 2 p.m., DJ Rhett and event

organizers head to all 18 of the event’s stops with music blasting, beckoning people to follow and check out the town’s businesses. While the party follows a route concocted by organizers, Merlos said attendees are encouraged to go at their own pace and make their own journey. “We just try to bring as many people as we possibly can to downtown Houma, so that they can enjoy all the vendors and the stops that we have because it’s about them. We try to support them,” he said. Some stops include Mahony’s Irish Pub and The Boxer & The Barrel for adults looking for an alcoholic beverage, and more family-friendly options like Scarlet Scoop Ice Cream Parlor. The full list is online at hachegrant. com. It includes Bayou Terrebonne Distillers, where the group of friends first hatched the idea. Merlos said he went to check out the new distillery with a friend,

and met Noah Lirette, former association president, and his cousin, “and the rest is history.” “Now we’re best friends, and we, you know, we started a muumuu party together,” he said. The Maw Maw Walker tradition is not a fundraiser, and Merlos said the $20 registration fee is only required if people want to enter the costume contest and receive commemorative swag that comes with registration. Merlos said the main goal is for people to come to Houma and have a good time. “Just having a very, very good time and not worrying about anything, and just coming together, no matter who you are, what color you are, where you from, or whatever, and everybody just having fun and dancing in the street and dressed like grandmas is pretty amazing to see,” Merlos said. Wet weather can cause mushrooms to appear seemingly overnight. I literally woke up to a new mushroom village in my yard this week. Because it can be difficult to distinguish a harmless mushroom from a toxic one, keep pets from eating any wild mushrooms and remove them from areas where pets spend time. Let’s talk about acorns. Anyone with an oak tree knows they can cover a yard or sidewalk quickly. Eating acorns can cause gastrointestinal upset, and swallowing larger pieces could lead to an obstruction. Dogs that consider everything on the ground a snack may need a little extra supervision. Be mindful of wildlife. Snakes certainly don’t disappear because the calendar says fall, especially when temperatures are still this warm. Keep yards tidy, remove debris, and be cautious around woodpiles, tall grass, and other places where snakes like to hide. Fall often means yard work and home projects. Fertilizers, pesticides, rodent control products and automotive fluids can all pose risks to pets. Store chemicals securely and clean up spills immediately.

Seasonal items The annual pumpkin craze can be pet-approved if it is plain canned pumpkin — not pumpkin pie filling — which is generally safe for dogs and cats in small amounts. But skip the pumpkin spice, whipped cream and anything else we humans like to add.

Walks in darkness The temperature may still feel like summer, but we’re already losing daylight. As evening walks happen in dimmer light, reflective collars, harnesses, leashes or small clip-on lights can make pets more visible to drivers, cyclists and other walkers. A flashlight is also useful for spotting uneven

“It’s just a great sense of pride to be part of the energy past and energy into the future. We have produced a billion barrels and we are not done yet.” Billy Lott Operation Supervisor

reaches historic 1-billion barrel milestone

Since 1996, the Shell-operated Mars platform has played a defining role in deep water energy production. Designed for waters nearly 3,000 feet deep, Mars was a bold step forward at the time and helped redefine what was possible offshore. Nearly 30 years later, continued investment, enduring engineering, and the commitment of generations of people have helped bring Mars to this landmark achievement. To be the first platform in the Gulf to reach one billion barrels is a momentous milestone, but for those who have been part of Mars, it has never been just about the number. The Mars community identifies as Martians, united by the enduring principle, “once a Martian, always a Martian.” This milestone carries the weight of long days offshore, shared challenges, and moments of problem-solving that happen when people rely on one another. It reflects years of dedication and quiet perseverance, and the deep sense of pride that comes from being part of something that continues to move forward.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry joined Shell GOA and Pipeline staff to commemorate one billion barrels produced from the Shell Mars asset via the Mars booster station in Port Fourchon.
