Zachary High running back Jeremey Patton (27) gets his face mask pulled during High School football action vs Madison Prep on Friday at Bronco Stadium in Zachary.

Tough start, but Broncos pick up first regular season win

The 2026 football season got off to a rough start for the Zachary High Broncos football team with a season-opening 2116 loss to Plaquemine followed by a 36-28 defeat by Acadiana, both on the road. Both of these early season matchups presented unique challenges for the Broncos in addition to being on the road. Plaquemine is a 4A powerhouse that has only lost two regular season games in the past two seasons. Those losses were to the Zachary Broncos

and a packed Green Devil stadium with renovations and new turn set for a difficult road environment. The following week, the Broncos traveled to Acadiana

to play the Wrecking Rams. Acadiana also carried a large chip on their shoulder. Last year, the Broncos delivered a 30-14 shellacking of the Rams at Zachary. The Broncos showed more offensive punch in the Acadiana game but at the conclusion coach David Brewerton was livid about the penalties and necessity for more team discipline. Enter Madison Prep for the Broncos home opener on Sept. 18. The Chargers are a perennial power that moved up to 4A

this year. In the season opener, they traveled to New Orleans and almost defeated 5A Jesuit before falling 28-20. The following week they handily defeated an always dangerous University High team 38-21. Obviously, this presented the Broncos with anything but a cupcake home opener. What did University High do on September 17th? They defeated Plaquemine 31-21. The common opponents game stuff

The search for evidence tied to the disappearances of two women continues in West Feliciana Parish after police said nothing was found at a Zachary house believed to be connected to the case. The Zachary Police Department said officers searched a residence on Ash Street on Sept. 14, but did not find anything connected to the missing women. Officials said the search was planned for weeks and was part of the broader search in West Feliciana. The Ash Street house is where Thomas Morris, 44, once lived. He is tied to the disappearance of 32-year-old Madison ReNae Allen and Stephanie Hevia. Morris is believed to have been living at the Zachary property at the time of Allen’s disappearance in late November 2023. Hevia, who was 38 at the time of her disappearance in March 2025, is believed to have last been seen at a 15-acre property Morris owns in West Feliciana Parrish, Sheriff Brian Spillman said. West Feliciana deputies and other agencies continue to search the property on Morris Road in St. Francisville for evidence and potential human remains. Neither of the women’s bodies has been recovered. Fourteen federal, state and local agencies have assisted in the Morris Road search, and about 30 officers have been on the search site, Spillman said. Over the weekend, cadaver dogs searched and identified spots for potential evidence and remains. Spillman said on Sept. 10 that the search was expected to take at least a week to complete. As of Friday, it will have been seven days since deputies started searching. On July 19, deputies responded to a West Feliciana store after a woman called to say she was hiding in the bathroom. She said Morris brought her there to buy medicine and was waiting outside. Deputies detained Morris at the scene. The woman told deputies she had befriended Morris in Montana in early July, and he brought her against her will to the Morris Road address, where she could not leave or use her phone. Morris is now at the West Feliciana Parish Detention Center, booked on charges of second-degree kidnapping, illegal possession of stolen firearms and false imprisonment on a $500,000 bond. Spillman said anyone with more information in the case could help the investigation. Tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867 or the Sheriff’s Office at 225-784-3136. Evan Lopez’s 15-yard field goal narrowed the deficit 22-17. After holding the Chargers on the next possession, Platts uncorked a bomb to Ethan Kimmie that gave the Broncos a first down at the Chargers 15. Platt found Kimmie again to give the Broncos their first lead of the night 25-22. With 6:50 left in the fourth quarter, the Chargers found the end zone to retake the lead 25-28. Platts’ 75-yard TD pass to Kylin Jones two plays later gave the Broncos the lead back 31-28. A fourth down sack and fumble recovery for a score by Josh Morgan put the Broncos up 39-28. The Chargers would not quit and came back to tighten the score to 39-36 but the Broncos offense was able to gain first downs and run out the clock for the victory. It’s good to be home. does not work with teenage boys so don’t even try to convince yourself that any of this had a bearing on the Broncos and Chargers game although the first half was pretty stressful for the Broncos. Madison Prep came out strong and, after a Broncos safety, scored again to raced out to a 9-0 lead with 7:02 left into the first quarter. The Chargers were not done scoring, and a 30-yard pass extended the lead to 15, but the extra point was blocked. The Broncos offense in the first half was limited to a large run by Tylek Lewis but the Broncos were not able to capitalize and scored no points. The Broncos appeared to have a defensive touchdown on fumble returned for a touchdown by Dylan Pierson, but the officials ruled an intentional grounding and the play did not stand. Neither team scored in the second and Madison Prep carried a 15-0 lead into the

pass to Kylin Jones started the Broncos second half to close the lead to 15-7. From there the scoring was fast and furious.

The Chargers responded to the Broncos score with a TD pass. On the ensuing series Jeremy Patton took a handoff 70-yards and the

Broncos narrowed the gap. The Broncos recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, which gave them prime field position.

Emergency Care Starts Here

Voters in West Feliciana Parish will consider a proposition to renew the existing ½ Mill tax that will provide funding for critical hospital services.

Voters approved the hospital funding 10 years ago, and a vote YES will renew the funding for another 10 years. The proposition is a renewal of the existing tax and is not a new tax.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Early voting is Oct. 20-27.
