Area students named National Merit semifinalists BY CHARLES LUSSIER Staff writer
About 125 high school seniors in the New Orleans region have been named National Merit semifinalists, an honor that places them among the top-achieving students in the country. They are among 16,000 semifinalists named from across the nation out of the class of 2027. They are now in the running for about
6,700 National Merit scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered in the spring. Statewide, roughly 230 Louisiana students qualified as semifinalists because they earned the highest scores on the 2025 administration of the PSAT, a preliminary test to the SAT college placement exam. Nationwide, the semifinalists represent less than 1% of the 1.2 million high school juniors who the took PSAT.
Hailing from both public and private schools, the New Orleansarea semifinalists include nearly 80 from Orleans Parish, about 30 from Jefferson, nearly 20 from St. Tammany and one each from Plaquemines and St. Bernard. To become finalists, the students must complete an application that asks about their academic achievement, extracurricular activities and leadership record; write an essay; receive an endorsement

For most pet owners, rabies isn’t something we think about much. We get a reminder from the veterinarian that it’s time for a rabies vaccine, make the appointment and check it off the list. Because rabies in pets has become so uncommon, it’s easy to forget Traci why that vaccine Howerton matters. ANIMAL Earlier this RESCUE month, we got a reminder. The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed a case of rabies in a dog in Acadiana — the first confirmed case in a Louisiana dog since 2014 and only the fifth in the state in the past 20 years. The news comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling attention to increased rabies activity and human exposures across the country. During July and August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received 17% more rabies-related inquiries than during the same period last year. Does this mean pet owners should panic? Absolutely not. But it does mean this is a good time to make sure we aren’t becoming complacent about a preventable disease that, once symptoms appear, is almost always fatal. One reason we don’t see rabies very often in our dogs and cats is that widespread vaccination has done exactly what it

Continued from page 1G is supposed to do. But the virus is still out there. More than 90% of reported rabies cases in animals nationwide occur in wildlife, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes among the animals most commonly infected. In Louisiana, bats and skunks are the primary wildlife carriers. This matters for our pets because they don’t have to venture deep into the woods to encounter wildlife. A bat can get into the house. A skunk can wander into the backyard. An outdoor cat can encounter wildlife without the owner ever knowing. Our pets don’t understand that they need to stay away from wild animals. Louisiana law requires dogs, cats and ferrets older than three months to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. If a pet’s rabies vaccine expiration is unknown, now is a good time to check. Don’t assume an indoor-only pet doesn’t need protection. Cats escape. Dogs have to go outside to do their business — sometimes at night, in the dark. Keeping a pet’s vaccine current protects the pet and the family. If a pet encounters a wild animal that could carry rabies, don’t try to handle the animal at home. Contact a veterinarian, animal control or public health officials promptly for guidance. What happens next can depend on the circumstances of the encounter and

If a person is bitten, scratched or otherwise potentially exposed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing the area thoroughly with soap and water and seeking medical attention immediately. Rabies is preventable with appropriate treatment before symptoms begin. Don’t approach a wild animal simply because it appears sick, injured or unusually friendly. The good news is that rabies in Louisiana pets is rare. The state has averaged about six rabiespositive animals per year since 2000, with most cases occurring in wildlife. But rare doesn’t mean gone. This 2026 case is a good reminder to check pets’ vaccination records, give wildlife plenty of space and know what to do if an exposure occurs.

Author event Joshua Wheeler, author of the new book “The High Heaven,” will discuss it at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. In “The High Heaven,” Joshua Wheeler explores American piety as it evolves over the Space Age, as technology reshapes notions of humanity and the heavens. Shot through with the speculative and paying homage to three iconic genres — neoWestern, picaresque and Southern Gothic — Izzy’s life story becomes a mirror for the warping of Manifest Destiny and, ultimately, a testament to the human will to seek meaning in the universe. Chris Smith is manager of adult programming at the Jefferson Parish Public Library.
