he was in another parish. Jury Vice President Chrissie O’Quin said the resolution should also call for the jury to report the allegations to the state Legislative Auditor’s Office and for the jury to follow the auditor’s recommendations. Jurors Kristin Chasteen incorporated O’Quin’s addition into her motion to reinstate Williams. State law requires public agencies to turn over evidence of pos-
parish truck for personal travel, and the jury subsequently tightened its policy. Despite that, Williams continued to violate the policy, the district attorney said. The jury’s resolution, which includes another reprimand to go into his personnel record, also will require him to leave his truck at the jury office and keep a logbook of after-hours travel and work, the district attorney said.

Sitting on the front row at the Galvez tasting Room are family members of author Michael Nolden Henderson who travelled from Algiers to Jackson. They are, from the left, his sister Cynthia Henderson, parents Albert and Frances Henderson, and sister Barbara Henderson. His parents, both 97 years old, have been married for 73 years.

Integration’s effect
Born in 1956, Henderson grew up during the years of “transition … integration.” In an interview, he mentioned that many people know the Ruby Bridges story. She was the Black child who in 1960 was the first Black girl to enter a formerly all-White school in New Orleans. Several years later, 9-yearold Michael Henderson faced a similar situation, he said. He said this may have been the spark that ignited his eventual quest for self-discovery, to become the family historian, and to become a genealogist.
As a young man seeking answers, Henderson became the family historian and he learned more about history in general, he said. He said it’s important to know your family history, that he “burned with curiosity.” He said that learning about genealogy “connected people, places and events” and learning more about the big picture/history helped put them in context. He said that when serving in the military he saw “all types of people” and learned that people were basically the same everywhere.
PHOTOS BY MELINDA HOWELL
The author’s wife, Anita Henderson, sitting, talks with audience members who purchased her husband’s book at the recent reception/gathering and lecture held at the Galvez Tasting Room Jackson. He said it be a challenge to find specific information, but new leads come and sometimes you are surprised by accidental discoveries. It is generally acknowledged by genealogists that it is harder to find documentation on ancestors for some groups of people, like African Americans. He said with his increased knowledge of history came understanding of why some of the things were the way they were. He touched upon things like the 1724 Code Noir of New Orleans, about how it was possible for some enslaved people to buy their own freedom, about the process of manumission, and other things.
The Galvez connections to service and to freedom Over the years his research would find documentation of his ancestors from the Spanish
Colonial period in Louisiana and before. He learned that more than one ancestor served in the military, including under Galvez during the American Revolutionary War. Another ancestor served during the War of 1812. The cover of his book “Proof” features his fourth-generation great-grandmother Marie Agnes Mathieu (1759-1817). This ancestor had a longstanding relationship with her “French consort” Mathieu Devaux dit Platillo. Some documents indicated that Devaux legally acknowledged their children, he said, in the only ways that he could since theirs was a forbidden relationship. Henderson discovered a document signed by Galvez in December 1779 formalizing Mathieu’s freedom. The document is currently featured in an exhibit at the Cabildo in New Orleans, he said.
Doors opened into national historical society In June 2010, Because he tracked down the proper documentation, Henderson became the first African American inducted in Georgia as a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He served as the vice president and then president of the Button Gwinnett Chapter. The documentation opened the doors for other family members to belong to historical organizations. In Jackson, Henderson met with audience members, signed copies of his memoir and posed for pictures. For information about Henderson’s story, his book, genealogy and more, visit michaelnhenderson.com or at Michael N. Henderson on Facebook.

Community news report Galen Vaccaro is a candidate for alderman for the town of Slaughter in the November election. He is ballot No. 94. For the past five months, Vaccaro has served as an interim alderman after being asked to fill the vacant seat. “That experience has given me a greater understanding of how our town operates and has strengthened my desire to remain involved,” he said. “Although I still have plenty to learn, I have enjoyed listening to residents, working with town officials, and helping wherever I can.” Vaccaro and his wife have lived in Slaughter for seven years. Both are originally from Zachary. “This area has been home to us our entire lives. We live in the center of town with
