WHO’S READY?

A litter box boycott could signal something more Cats are known for being particular, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the litter box. I’ve been involved in animal rescue for many years and have plenty of friends who own cats. One of the most common topics I’m asked to write about is Traci the litter box and what Howerton to do when a cat sudANIMAL denly decides it’s no RESCUE longer the place to do its business. It’s frustrating and messy, and it’s easy to assume the cat is simply misbehaving. But when a cat that has reliably used the litter box suddenly stops, there’s usually a reason. Sometimes the culprit is something fairly simple: a dirty box, a new litter or a location the cat doesn’t like. Other times, it can be an early sign of a medical problem. Before blaming the cat, consider a few possibilities.

Check the cat’s health

Rule out a medical problem first. A sudden change in litter box habits warrants a conversation with a veterinarian, especially if nothing in the cat’s environment has changed. Urinary tract problems, bladder inflammation, kidney disease, diabetes, constipation, arthritis and other conditions can all affect litter box habits. Pay particular attention to a cat that repeatedly enters the box but produces little or no urine, cries or strains while urinating, excessively licks the genital area or seems uncomfortable. A urinary blockage is an emergency, especially in male cats, and requires immediate veterinary care.

Is the environment right? A good rule of thumb is one litter box for each cat in the household, plus one extra. A home with two cats should ideally have three boxes. Don’t put them all right next to each other; placing boxes in different areas gives

thony’s Missing Piece Playground, it marks the third inclusive playground that Bohannan has helped develop in her district. The inclusive playground focuses on ensuring every child feels welcome, engaged and connected, not just physically able to play, parish spokesperson Rachel Strassel said. It will include multiple entry points, varied challenge levels, sensory-stimulating and quiet areas for different needs, along with equipment that invites social interaction. The city did not share the estimated cost of the project by press time, but funding is set to come from state appropriations and private donations. Representatives of State Rep. John Illg Jr. (R-Harahan) said $200,000 was dedicated from the state budget, and $10,000 of that will go toward playground security cameras. “This investment will benefit families for generations to come,” Illg said, it’s the kind of project the state should be supporting. “Harahan is already home to Royland Playground, an inclusive, community-built play space installed by Pelican Playgrounds and local volunteers in 2025,” the city said in announcing its newest playground. “The Kenner Planetarium and Space Science Complex also has a Luna Interactive Play Spot, which uses sensor technology to create inclusive games.”

BOX

Continued from page 1G cats options and can be especially important when one cat intimidates or blocks another from reaching a box. Place litter boxes somewhere quiet and easy to access. Avoid putting them near noisy appliances that may suddenly turn on and frighten the cat. Also consider whether another pet could interfere with access. A dog hanging around the box or another cat guarding the path to it may be enough to send a cat looking for an alternative. Cats need enough room to enter, turn around, dig and cover their waste. Bigger is often better. Older cats or those with arthritis and mobility problems may need a box with a lower entrance that’s easier to step into. Some cats prefer covered boxes, while others feel confined by them. If problems develop, offering another style may help determine the cat’s preferences. Imagine being asked to use a bathroom that hasn’t been cleaned in days. Cats aren’t really fond of that idea either. Scoop boxes at least once daily and more often if needed. Also empty and clean boxes regularly with mild, unscented products. Cats can be very particular about what’s beneath their paws. A sudden change in brand, texture or scent can cause some cats to look for another place to go. Many cats prefer soft, unscented litter. Strong fragrances that smell pleasant to us may overwhelm a cat’s sensitive nose. When changing litter, make the switch gradually rather than all at once.

Understanding a cat’s behavior Consider what has changed.

Cats tend to like routine, and changes that seem minor to us can be significant to them. A move, a new baby, houseguests, construction, a schedule change or adding another pet can create stress. Even relocating the litter box can cause problems for some cats. Clean accidents thoroughly and avoid punishment. Use a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner to eliminate lingering odors. If the scent remains, the cat may return to the same spot. Don’t punish a cat for going outside the box. It won’t teach the cat to use it and may increase its stress, potentially making the problem worse. A cat that suddenly stops using the litter box isn’t trying to ruin the carpet. He may be uncomfortable, stressed, unhappy with its bathroom setup or dealing with a medical problem that needs attention. When litter box habits suddenly change, take a closer look at the box, the household, and, most importantly, the cat. Sometimes going outside the box is its way of saying something is wrong.

Events Registration is open for the NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 11. Participants will run through Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans and raise funds for animal rescue organizations, including Animal Rescue New Orleans, Take Paws, Trampled Rose Rescue, Zeus’ Rescues and The Inner Pup. To learn more and register, visit noladogsrace.com. Traci D. Howerton is the volunteer manager for Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), a nonprofit, volunteer-based, no-kill shelter. Creative fiction, nonfiction writing workshops highlight upcoming events Local author Annell López, author of the short story collection “I’ll Give You a Reason,” will discuss the characteristics of the hermit crab essay at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Wagner Library, 6646 Riverside Drive, Metairie. This event is free and open to the public. A hermit crab essay is a creative nonfiction form that Chris adopts an existing, Smith nonliterary strucLIBRARY ture — such as a LAGNIAPPE recipe, syllabus, or rejection letter — as a “shell” to contain personal, often vulnerable content. Coined by Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola, this form uses the constraint of the borrowed structure to provide distance, focus, and playful, innovative storytelling. Characteristics may include borrowed structure, camouflage and vulnerability, thematic alignment, and an implied narrative. Examples of hermit crab essays include rejection letters, how-to guides, lists, and technical formats such as syllabuses, recipes, or medical reports. Annell López is the winner of the Louise Meriwether First Book Prize and the author of the short story collection “I’ll Give You a Reason” from the Feminist Press. A Peter Taylor Fellow at the Kenyon Review Writers Workshops, López’s work has received support from Tin House and has appeared in Guernica, American Short Fiction, Michigan Quarterly Review, Brooklyn Rail, Refinery29, and elsewhere. López received her MFA from the University of New Orleans.

ter on the library’s website. There are 12 workshops. The first six occur at 1 p.m. on Sept. 3, Sept. 17, Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, and Nov. 12, to start.

Creative writing at Belle Terre Library Creative writers of all skill levels who want to hone their voice by sharing their writing and feedback with one another in a supportive critique group will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at Belle Terre Library, 5550 Belle Terre Road, Marrero. (The group usually meets monthly on the third Saturday.) Writers should attend at least one session before submitting a short work (no more than five pages) for reading and discussion at each session.

River Ridge creative writing The final two workshops in the River Ridge Creative Writing Workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 2 and Sept. 9, at the River Ridge Library, 8825 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge. Taught by local writer and educator Maria Baisier, the class will focus on story writing, memoir writing and creative nonfiction.

NEW ORLEANS LIBRARY

Signing up for a library card in September comes with more than books BY JANE LEGROS

Contributing writer

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the New Orleans Public Library is celebrating with a special giveaway for everyone who registers for a library card or renews an expired membership. The American Library Association has hosted National Library Card Sign-Up Month since 1987 to mark the start of the school year. Throughout the month, libraries across the country unite in an effort to ensure every child signs up for a library card. People of all ages are now encouraged to participate in Sign-Up Month. Everyone who signs up for a card or updates their New Orleans Public Library account between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 will receive a free canvas tote bag featuring illustrations by New Orleans artist Nichól Brinkman. Potential library patrons can visit nolalibrary.org for

more information or stop by one of the 15 library locations around the city. Throughout the school year, librarians and library staff will help parents and caregivers save hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students, including free access to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics programs and activities, educational apps, inperson and virtual homework help, and technology workshops. With librarians’ expertise, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available. The library also offers several nontraditional lending materials, including seeds, professional-grade cake pans, puzzles, tools and more. A New Orleans Public Library card also grants free access to movie and music streaming, digital magazines and newspapers, and even admission to New Orleans museums and attractions through the Culture Pass Program.

Cardholders over 18 who live in Orleans Parish can reserve Culture Passes. Passes unlock free admission to more than a dozen cultural institutions, including: n Audubon Zoo, Aquarium and Insectarium n Contemporary Arts Center n Gallier House n Hermann-Grima House n Historic BK House & Gardens n Select Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra n Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience n National WWII Museum n New Orleans African American Museum n New Orleans Museum of Art n Ogden Museum of Southern Art n New Canal Lighthouse Museum. Boardwalk reopens at Bayou Sauvage Staff report The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has reopened the Ridge Trail and Boardwalk at Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge after a monthslong boardwalk construction project that began in March. The new boardwalk provides an improved way for visitors to experience Bayou Sauvage’s habitats and wildlife. The upgraded trail offers opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife, enjoy the surrounding wetlands, and experience nature within one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country. The new observation deck also gives visitors a place to experience the refuge. The Refuge, at 17160 Chef Menteur Highway, New Orleans, is one of the last remaining marsh areas adjacent to Lakes Pontchartrain and Borgne. It includes patches of bottomland hardwood forest, freshwater, brackish, and estuarine tidal marshes, lagoons, canals, and natural bayous.
