SPORTS Zachary High athletes hold Splash and Dash Zachary High School’s swim and cross country teams were at it again for the second annual Splash and Dash at the Americana YMCA on Aug. 16. Each swimmer is paired with a runner for the event. Swimmers start by snaking through the pool for 500 meters, then jump out and tag their runner. Runners take off on a 5k course, finishing back at the YMCA. It is a fun start to both teams’ seasons. First place went to Warren Griffin (swimmer) and Carson Southall (runner), and second place to Caleb Connor (swimmer) and Coraline Lawhon (runner).

Continued from page 1G The Broncos return plenty of experience after losing only one senior from the 2025 squad that advanced to the playoffs. The Broncos team consists of 24 girls this year with over half made up of underclassmen — eight freshmen and seven sophomores. Perry will be relying on her six seniors — Alyssa Albert, Amelia Mitchem, Avie Mason, Gabrielle Honora, Karsyn Marshall and Kyleigh Norman — to play significant roles. Perry said the challenge is how the seniors approach the year. Perry explained it as “are we going to be good because we are returning six seniors, or are we going to not meet expectations because we could not replace the one senior that graduated.” Perry is entering her 11th year coaching volleyball at ZHS and her eighth year as the head coach. Assisting Perry this year are assistants Kia Coleman and Ron Lewis. Perry will also be assisting at Northwestern Middle School to help the girls learn the system and get prepared for the jump to ZHS. After a productive summer where the team went
to camps at South Alabama, Louisiana Tech and hosted the Southeastern coaches, Perry is pleased with the team’s offseason preparation. Perry indicated that the early results have been promising as the girls picked up wins over West Feliciana and Madison Prep during a jamboree on Aug. 18. Perry relayed that “though the girls played well, there are definitely things we can still work on to be consistent over the season.” Competition picks up this week with the St. Michael’s Jamboree Aug. 27, Lady Broncos Jamboree on Aug. 29, and the Broncos hosting Slaughter and Vidalia on Sept. 1. Those six seniors will be recognized in a home game against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee on Sept. 24. The District 4-5A race will be different with Scotlandville and Woodlawn moving out and the large Livingston Parish schools — Walker, Live Oak and Denham Springs — moving in. The team to beat is still St. Joseph Academy, who advanced to the semifinals in 2025. Central and Baton Rouge High also advanced to the playoffs in 2025. Live Oak was the only Livingston Parish 4-5A team to make the playoffs in 2025. Changes in the district have not changed Perry’s
approach. “For me each year it’s important that we just come out and compete and play our game regardless of who is on the other side of the net,” Perry emphasized. When asked to identify a player that stood out or could have a breakout season, Perry responded that “everyone has done their job this offseason and just yesterday I had a set lineup but I was really encouraged because they can all play, and did when asked.” When asked to explain the changes to the defense this year Perry quickly replied, “well you are going to have to come watch and see for yourself.” “We just need to make sure we can stay disciplined and each individual does their job when things get chaotic,” Perry said. A full season promises plenty of opportunity for the Broncos to conquer those challenges. Perry indicated that she would love for folks to come out and see the girls play an exciting brand of volleyball this year.
