For the next 10 months, perhaps longer, all contracts involving the East Baton Rouge Parish school system will carry Deputy Superintendent Adam Smith’s signature in addition to that of Superintendent LaMont Cole. In addition, contracts entered into since March 2024 will undergo an “in-depth” audit. The parish School Board on Thursday unanimously approved these financial changes in an effort to address public unease due to federal criminal corruption charges recently filed against Cole. Those charges predate Cole’s two years as schools leader, going back to his previous job as an elected member of the Metro Council. The measures, which Cole supports, are meant to reassure the public while allowing Cole to continue to run the day-to-day operations of the state’s second-largest traditional school district, home to nearly 38,000 students. Cole was selected as district superintendent in July 2024, and he has two more years on his four-year contract. The board held little discussion before voting

8-0 for the changes — board member Dadrius Lanus was absent. Board member Mike Gaudet credited fellow board member Patrick Martin V and Cole for reaching an agreement about the additional financial controls. “This was a joint effort, and I’m glad to see it came together across the board,” Gaudet said. Cole is facing two counts of conspiracy to commit public bribery, two counts of money laundering and a count of malfeasance in office. He was released on $15,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 29 before Commissioner Kina Kimble. There was no direct discussion at Thursday’s meeting about Cole’s criminal case. Since Cole’s indictment, almost every board member has given public support to having him stay on as superintendent while he defends himself from the charges, which he says are “based on association, not attestation, and proximity to potential crimes without proof.” That support was not shaken by the release of several damning text

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy has raised concerns about President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the agency that oversees the safety of food and drugs, citing a lack of experience and questioning her commitment to defending vaccines. As chair of the powerful Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, Cassidy’s wariness could pose problems for Dr. Heidi Overton’s Overton nomination. Overton, of Gallup, New Mexico, is a deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Trump tapped her Wednesday to replace Dr. Marty Makary, who resigned in May. “While I respect Dr. Overton’s experience as a physician, I have strong concerns about her nomination to be FDA Commissioner,” Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, wrote on X moments after Trump announced his nomination. “Her lack of managerial experience does not prepare her well for leading a large organization that is already dealing with staffing and morale issues.” Cassidy has not said when or if he will convene a HELP committee hearing on Overton’s nomination. Every Republican on the panel will have to approve advancing Overton’s nomination for the full Senate to vote on her confirmation. Additionally, Cassidy faulted Overton for standing behind Trump when he released his executive order changing the vaccination schedule for children.

NFL FLAG, said registration will open Sept. 17, with a one-day kickoff jamboree at Memorial Park on Dec. 5 to introduce players and families to the program. The inaugural season is expected to run seven weeks, beginning Jan. 13 and continuing through early March, culminating in playoffs and a championship. NFL FLAG football is the largest youth flag football organization in the country and has partnered with flag football programs in Louisiana.

The cost per child per season will be $45, which includes a jersey, equipment and more. BREC Superintendent Brooks Williams and 12-year-old Parker, a Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School student, showed off the black-and-gold Saints jerseys that would be used in the league. Williams said the parks agency does not run every local league, but it does have a role in whether recreational sports succeed.
