SEPTEMBER

When something looks wrong with your dog’s eyes, don’t wait to see a vet Traci Howerton ANIMAL RESCUE

I’ve learned firsthand that when a dog’s eyes don’t look right, waiting to see if it gets better is rarely a good idea. My dog, Romeo, is now 16 and completely blind. Last year, he developed an eye problem that quickly escalated from concerning to an emergency. Even though he was already under veterinary care and receiving medication, the condition worsened, and he ultimately needed emergency surgery

to remove the eye. He later developed glaucoma in his remaining eye and eventually lost his vision completely. Romeo’s experience has taught me two things: Eye problems can change quickly and losing eyesight doesn’t necessarily mean losing quality of life. Dogs can develop eye problems at any age. Cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, corneal injuries, infections and other conditions can cause pain and, in some

cases, permanent vision loss. Eye problems can also be linked to underlying health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. This is why changes in the eyes deserve prompt attention. Signs that something may be wrong include squinting or keeping an eye closed, redness, swelling, cloudiness, excessive tearing, rubbing or pawing at the eye and yellow, green or bloody

discharge. A sudden change in the eye’s appearance or an obvious injury also warrants a call to the vet. Changes in behavior can offer clues as well. A dog experiencing vision loss may become more hesitant on stairs, bump into furniture, have difficulty locating toys or food bowls, startle more easily or seem reluctant to move
