SEPTEMBER

When something looks wrong with your dog’s eyes, don’t wait to see a vet Traci Howerton ANIMAL RESCUE

I’ve learned firsthand that when a dog’s eyes don’t look right, waiting to see if it gets better is rarely a good idea. My dog, Romeo, is now 16 and completely blind. Last year, he developed an eye problem that quickly escalated from concerning to an emergency. Even though he was already under veterinary care and receiving medication, the condition worsened, and he ultimately needed emergency surgery

to remove the eye. He later developed glaucoma in his remaining eye and eventually lost his vision completely. Romeo’s experience has taught me two things: Eye problems can change quickly and losing eyesight doesn’t necessarily mean losing quality of life. Dogs can develop eye problems at any age. Cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, corneal injuries, infections and other conditions can cause pain and, in some

cases, permanent vision loss. Eye problems can also be linked to underlying health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. This is why changes in the eyes deserve prompt attention. Signs that something may be wrong include squinting or keeping an eye closed, redness, swelling, cloudiness, excessive tearing, rubbing or pawing at the eye and yellow, green or bloody

discharge. A sudden change in the eye’s appearance or an obvious injury also warrants a call to the vet. Changes in behavior can offer clues as well. A dog experiencing vision loss may become more hesitant on stairs, bump into furniture, have difficulty locating toys or food bowls, startle more easily or seem reluctant to move

PET OF THE WEEK

Continued from page 1G around in unfamiliar surroundings. Some vision loss develops gradually, particularly as pets age. Other conditions can progress much more quickly. Glaucoma, for example, increases pressure inside the eye and can be extremely painful. It can rapidly damage vision, making prompt diagnosis and treatment especially important. Depending on the condition, treatment may include eye drops, other medications, procedures or surgery. Some pets may also need to see a veterinary ophthalmologist. In Romeo’s case, his glaucoma was initially managed with multiple eye drops each day. He later underwent a procedure involving an injection into the affected eye, and thankfully, we are now done with the daily eye drops. Although his vision could not be restored, the goal became to keep him comfortable and maintain his quality of life. If vision can’t be restored, don’t assume a blind dog can’t continue to have a happy, fulfilling life. Dogs are remarkably adaptable and don’t rely on vision the same way people do. Their powerful sense of smell, along with hearing and touch, can help them learn to navigate familiar surroundings. Romeo has the added challenge of being deaf, so we’ve had to find other ways to help him get around. I still talk to him even though he can’t hear me, and I use touch to let him know I’m nearby so I don’t startle him. I also pick him up and guide him when he needs a little help. He’s also become much more vocal since losing his sight and isn’t shy about barking to tell us exactly what he wants or to make sure nobody forgets that he deserves a treat. There are several ways to make life easier and safer for a dog experiencing vision loss.

Feeding, walks, potty breaks and bedtime at roughly the same times each day can give a visually impaired dog a sense of what comes next. When approaching a blind dog, avoid surprising him. If he can hear, speak before touching him. For dogs like Romeo who are both blind and deaf, a gentle touch can let them know someone is nearby. Don’t stop playing just because eyesight is gone. Toys that squeak, crinkle or have a strong scent can make playtime easier for dogs who can still hear. For dogs with multiple sensory losses, toys and activities that rely on smell, texture and food can provide enrichment. Romeo may no longer be able to see the world around him, but that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying it. He knows his home, he knows his routine, and he always knows when it’s dinner time!

Discussing the artist Boyd Cruise at Metairie library Local author and historian Ed Branley will discuss the influential artist Boyd Cruise at 7 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Cruise combined his artistic talents with a love of history to create an endearing portfolio Chris of paintings that roSmith manticized southLIBRARY ern Louisiana’s LAGNIAPPE built environment — particularly the French Quarter and plantations along River Road. His works, with their meticulous attention to detail — from building signs and period dress to architectural elements — faithfully reflect the reality of everyday life in Louisiana. Many of his works were commissioned by the Depression-era federal Historic American Buildings Survey to document Louisiana’s architectural heritage. Cruise was also the first director of The Historic New Orleans Collection, a renowned private archive of art and historic documents in the French Quarter.

Trap-Neuter-Return workshop The Jefferson SPCA, UFO (Unwanted Feline Organization), and JP Helping Paws are hosting a free, hands-on workshop to teach patrons how to make a difference for community cats and vulnerable kittens. The Trap-NeuterReturn workshop will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. This event is free and open to the public. TNR is the humane and effective approach to managing community cat populations. Participants will learn to plan a trapping project, safely use humane traps, what to expect during the spay/ neuter process, and how to care for cats during recovery before returning them to their outdoor homes. The Tiny Paws, Big Impact: Kitten Bottle Feeding 101 seminar will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., immediately after the TNR workshop. Participants will learn to care for neonatal “bottle baby” kittens. Topics include bottle-feeding techniques, nutrition, hygiene, fostering tips, and how to recognize and address common health concerns to give orphaned kittens the best chance of survival.

Staff report

Gwen Kelley, a librarian who specializes in genealogy, will lead a series of 12 genealogical seminars for beginners and intermediates during the fall of 2026 at the River Ridge Library, 8825 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge. Storytelling workshop

Heart Health

Writer, filmmaker, songwriter and producer Steve Scaffidi will present the second part of a creative storytelling workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 29 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. This second part, titled the Song Showcase, is open to the public, and all participants from the first session will leave with a professionally produced MP3 of their song. During the first part of the seminar on Aug. 9, Scaffidi guided participants through their individual stories to create a song. He shared his writing method and style with the group while teaching the creative process of storytelling and songwriting. By the end of the workshop, each participant had written a full song inspired by a personal story. Following the workshop, Scaffidi took each participant’s creative work back to his studio and produced a full song for each member of the class.

Libraries with a Heart, a new initiative by the Greater New Orleans chapter of the American Heart Association and the Jefferson Parish Library, allows patrons to check their blood pressure at any JP library. Jefferson Parish libraries are now equipped with blood pressure monitoring tools at self-service kiosks, or patrons can borrow take-home blood pressure monitor kits from the library’s Beyond Books Library of Things collection. The initiative helps individuals better understand and manage high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. An estimated 42.7% of Jefferson Parish residents report being told by a healthcare professional that they have high blood pressure. Yet many remain unaware they have hypertension or face barriers to regular monitoring. Libraries with a Heart brings trusted health resources into accessible community spaces, making it easier for residents to know their numbers and take charge of their health.
