Giordano said the installation is meant to support local artists and boost summer business at Bywater bars. She previously cofounded the pop-up gallery Salon D’Whatever, which brought local
artists into neighborhood bars each month. “We would feature artists in the service industry, as they often don’t get chances to show their work because they’re busy working nights and weekends,” Giordano said. The effort led to partnerships between nine local artists and nine venues, each artist trans-
forming a bar’s bathroom into a temporary art installation. At Anna’s bar, artist Jasmine Williams’ fabric flower installation adds color and texture to the bathroom’s blue, graffiticovered walls and pink lighting. Williams, a copywriter by trade and a textile artist, embraced the

Back to school isn’t just an adjustment for kids As summer comes to an end, families are preparing for the familiar back-to-school routine. Backpacks are packed, alarm clocks are set, and the morning hustle to get everyone out the door is about to begin again. While the kids may be adjusting to a new school year, they’re not the only ones facing a change in routine. Our pets feel it, too. For many dogs and cats, summer means extra walks, more playtime and their favorite people around throughout the day. Then, almost overnight, the house becomes quiet. Suddenly, everyone is gone.
Some pets — like my dog Romeo affected by changes in their daily — barely seem to notice the change environment. in routine. Before everyone heads out the door each morning, spend a little extra time exercising the dog. A long walk or a game of fetch can help burn off energy and encourage relaxation during the day. Enrichment toys and puzzles can also provide mental stimulation and help keep pets occupied after the family leaves.

exhibition’s playful concept from the start. “Everything makes me want to take a closer look, including the bathroom graffiti,” Williams said. “When Anna asked if I wanted to be part of a bathroom exhibit, my first thought was my show title: ‘Flowers From You Smell Like S***.’ ” Artist E Marshall, who moved to New Orleans in 2012 and graduated from the University of New Orleans with an art degree in 2020, set out to create “a viewing experience” and “mindscape” within the restroom at Faubourg Wines on St. Claude Avenue. His installation combines a large, intricate painting, hanging flags, bold colors and atmospheric lighting. “One of the walls in the bathroom is the same size as my painting,” Marshall said. “When you close the door, you can see my painting. It gives you a private place to look at art.” New Orleans native painter and muralist Morrah Burton-Edwards adorned the restroom walls at Bacchanal Wine on Poland Avenue with a vibrant mural. She chose a lively dance scene that captures the spirit of Bacchanal Wine, a venue known for its live music and vibrant atmosphere. “I had full creative freedom on what I painted on the walls,” Burton-Edwards said. She became involved with the project through her brother, who works as a service manager at Bacchanal. After earning a painting degree from Pratt Institute in 2025, Burton-Edwards was eager to take part in the Bywater art crawl. She also created a mural for the Krewe of Muses’ new den last year. In addition, she works as a visual arts instructor at Eternal Seeds, where she teaches high school-aged youth to create art. The mural was so well received that Katie Singer, general manager at Bacchanal Wine, said it will remain a permanent fixture in the bar’s restroom. “Her art is too good to remove,” Singer said. Since joining the “It’s Potty Time” art crawl, Singer said Bacchanal Wine has seen increased traffic and an overwhelmingly positive response from patrons and staff. She added that the venue plans to participate in future community art installations. “I believe this is a great opportunity for the community to discover local artists, and I think it’s a great way to beautify spaces that may normally be overlooked,”

“I come from a family of artists, and I’ve always been encouraged to be creative,” Harrison-Ach said. Her work includes penand-ink pieces, oil-painted portraits and nature-inspired illustrations. Harrison-Ach said the restroom setting offers a fun way to introduce people to new art and gives the community a chance to
PET OF THE WEEK
The start of a new school year coincides with the peak of hurricane season, making it a good time to ensure the pet’s identification is up to date. Check that collars fit properly, ID tags include current contact information, and the pet’s microchip registration reflects the current phone number and address. If a pet is not microchipped, getting this done should be part of the back-to-school checklist.
Continued from page 1G For cats, consider adding a window perch, rotating toys every few days or hiding small treats around the house to encourage exploration while away. One mistake some pet owners make is turning departures and arrivals into emotional events. As difficult as it may be, try to keep hellos and goodbyes calm and low-key. This helps teach pets that family members leaving and returning is no big deal and part of the daily routine. Most pets settle into their new routine within a couple of weeks. However, if a dog or cat experiences severe anxiety, refuses to eat or shows other concerning changes in behavior, schedule a visit with the vet. They can help determine whether there is an underlying medical issue or recommend strategies to help the pet adjust. Our pets may not under-
experience local creativity in an unexpected place. Other participating venues include Domino Lounge and Night Bloom on St. Claude Avenue, Bud Rips on Piety Street, Parleaux Beer Lab on Lesseps Street and BJ’s Lounge on Burgundy Street, rounding out the self-guided tour of the nine Bywater bars. Giordano said some of the artwork is available for purchase, and interested patrons can contact the artists directly on Instagram. To help visitors navigate the exhibition, Giordano created a map identifying each participating venue and artist. The map is available on Anna’s website (www.annasnola.com/its-potty-time) and by scanning the QR code on the event flyer. “You can start anywhere you want,” said Giordano. “You can make an excursion out of it while supporting local artists and businesses.” Despite the oppressive summer heat, Giordano hopes to expand “It’s Potty Time” beyond the Bywater by adding bars and restaurants in neighborhoods such as the Marigny, Tremé, the Lower Ninth Ward and the Seventh Ward. “Anything that we as business owners can do in the doldrums of summer to drum up business, excitement and employ people is going to be a positive exercise,” Giordano said. “It definitely has the potential to be citywide.”
