Ascension Parish’s commodity distribution is set for the second Tuesday of each month in Donaldsonville and the second Wednesday of the month in Gonzales.

Distributions are from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Frank Sotile Jr. Pavilion in Donaldsonville and the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales.

All recipients must be prequalified by visiting the Ascension Parish Health Unit, 1024 E. Ascension Complex Blvd., in Gonzales or the Donaldsonville courthouse, 300 Houmas St. Contact Layne Melancon at (225) 450-1006 or layne.melancon@ fmolhs.org.

As students from across Ascension Parish went back to school Thursday, those at a Prairieville elementary school may have noticed something new: a six-classroom modular building on campus.

Sugar Mill Primary, a PreK through fifth grade school, opened in 2021 with just over 500 students. Last school year, they had 683 students. But Jackie Tisdell, public information officer for the Ascension Parish school system, said the new building isn’t primarily a sign of overcrowding, as Sugar Mill Primary was designed to accommodate up to 740 students.

The need for additional instructional space is driven by the number and types of classrooms required to meet student needs, Tisdell said.

Programs such as special education, intervention services and enrichment often require dedicated classrooms to meet state and federal requirements and maintain appropriate student-to-teacher ratios, she said.

“This proactive approach allows us to meet current instructional needs while also preparing the campus for future growth, minimizing disruptions and avoiding the need for additional installation work in the coming

Ricky Babin will serve a fourth, six-year term as district attorney for the 23rd Judicial District after no one else registered for the election.

Babin, who has served as district attorney since 2008, will continue to lead the prosecution office, which covers Ascension, Assumption and St. James Babin parishes.

Babin graduated from LSU in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree before earning his law degree from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law School in 1992.

He began practicing civil law in 1992 before moving into criminal defense work in the 23rd Judicial District. In 1995, Babin joined the District Attorney’s Office. He was appointed first assistant district attorney in 2002 and served in that position through 2008.

Babin was first elected district attorney in fall 2008. He ran unopposed for his second term in 2014 and his third term in 2020.

He also served as president of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association in 2017.

Ascension creating rules for data centers

Sugar Mill Primary is the only school receiving a modular building in Ascension Parish this year. Tisdell said the school is intentionally installing more units than are immediately needed.

Efforts to reach the school’s principal were unsuccessful.

A growing parish Ascension is one of the largest school districts in the state. The district has more than 24,000 students in 32 schools and three programs.

The Ascension Parish Council is moving to create rules for data centers, even though no company has proposed building one in the parish.

The parish leadership approved a resolution Thursday to develop guidelines for where data centers could be located and how they could be built if one should be proposed in the future.

Councilman Chase Melancon said the parish is trying to establish the rules before a company submits an application.

“We do not know of a data center that wants to build anywhere in the parish,” he said. “But we have to get black-and-white guidelines on, if you apply, what that data center looks like, where it can be built, what’s the proper zoning. We don’t have a data center inside of our zoning right now. Those are all things we want to do before anyone even tries to apply.”

Melancon said any proposed regulations will go through the parish’s Planning and Zoning Commission before returning to the council, which will hold a public

The Donaldsonville Tigers football team went 8-2 in the regular season in 2025 before falling to eventual state champion Sterlington in the second round.

Gone from last year’s team are some key pieces, but returning for what he hopes is a healthy senior season is wide receiver Khy Jones.

Jones is a dual sport athlete, excelling in basketball as well. The last

two seasons he has battled injuries missing opportunities to help his teammates in key games.

I had a chance to talk with Jones, and he is locked in for his last ride as a Tiger.

Ascension Parish Library awarded 1 of 25 Parish America 250 Program mini grants Community news report Learn about how American music has shaped the nation’s history, culture and identity during a six-week series at the Ascension Parish Library.

The program is being made possible by a $1,500 Parish America 250 Program Mini Grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

The grant supports programming that highlights Louisiana’s contributions to the founding and development of the United States.

The library will use the grant funding for a six-week series exploring how American music has shaped — and been shaped by — the nation’s history, culture and identity.

The series begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the library in Gonzales. It will feature discussions on patriotic anthems and protest songs, jazz and hip-hop, and more.

The endowment awarded 25 grants of up to $1,500 to libraries, schools, museums and government agencies across Louisiana to fund school field trips, lecture series, public murals, and other projects to commemorate America 250.

Funding for the 2026 Parish America 250 Mini Grant has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with the Louisiana Office of the Lieutenant Governor and the America 250 Louisiana State Commission.

During Thursday’s public comment period, several residents spoke against allowing data centers in Ascension Parish. Residents raised concerns about the potential use of water and electricity and the facilities’ impact on the environment.

“Donaldsonville alone is a small community. We have shouldered our burden of environmental items already,” Ascension resident Keeonkah Judson told the council. “We keep adding and adding, and we are way over where we need to be for the amount of chemicals in our air.”

Council member Blaine Petite said some council members were able to attend training sessions with elected officials who have data facilities nationwide.

“It showed us that we’re not ready to even have the conversation,” he said. “That is what this is for: guidance for our parish to say, ‘If you even think of coming here, these are the rules, and we will not accept anything less.’ ”

Louisiana data center boom The council’s move comes as largescale data center projects are expanding across Louisiana, fueled in part by growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Meta announced its Hyperion data center project in Richland Parish in December 2024. In July, the company announced plans to invest more than $50 billion in the project, which it said would expand the campus to nearly 10 million square feet and 5 gigawatts of IT capacity.

Additionally, Amazon announced in February plans to invest $12 billion in data center campuses in Caddo and Bossier parishes to support cloud computing technologies, and Applied Digital announced in May plans for a $3.6 billion artificial intelligence facility in Rapides Parish known as Delta Forge 1.

Hospital is set to break ground on a $4.6M expansion

Less than a year after opening its doors in Prairieville, Rise Community Hospital is preparing to nearly double its size with a $4.6 million expansion to accommodate growing demand.

The facility operates as a full-service emergency room that offers addiction recovery services.

Rise recently applied for permits for the 5,868-square-foot addition, according to Ascension Parish permit records.

Construction is expected to begin following a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Aug. 25.

“We realized there was a need for it, so that’s why we are expanding because it’s

care. Sheppard said the project will add about 10 patient beds and require approximately 20 additional employees. Sheppard said he does not know when the project will be completed.

Rise Community Hospital opened in August 2025 on Market Place Drive in Prairieville, occupying the former Prairieville Family Hospital location, which closed after the state revoked its license.
