ZEPTO is collecting new and gently used Zachary Community School uniforms through June 5. Donation bins are available during business hours at all five elementary schools, as well as Northwestern Middle School, Zachary High and the Zachary Community School Board office

School staff, teachers dine on city leaders’ appreciation meal
Mid-May was the Zachary Community School District Staff and Teacher Appreciation Fish Fry Week. The city of Zachary cooking team traveled from school to school, frying fish onsite as a token of appreciation for the hard work and dedication our teachers
and staff show each and every day
Zachary business Thornton, Musso and Bellemin Water Treatment Consultants sponsored the fish and cooking supplies. The Zachary Fire Department and Zachary Police Department helped box and sort the meals.

The prospects for “what comes next” was engrained in me as a kid as I grew up a fan of University of Oklahoma football in the 1970s and 1980s. What an incredible group of running backs over that period. In the early 1970s, Greg Pruitt and Joe Washington both went on to tremendous NFL careers and left everyone asking, “can they ever be replaced.” Enter future Heisman trophy winner Billy Simms, Elvis Pea-
cock and Kenny King followed by David Overstreet, Spencer Tillman, Lydell Carr and Marcus Dupree. Yeah, I can still name every starting University of Oklahoma quarterback too, from Jack Mildren in 1971 to Jamelle Holieway in 1988. They all ran the triple option out of the wishbone for OU Coach Barry Switzer
In my mind, Thomas Lott was the best, but of course he had Kenny King, Elvis Peacock and Billy Simms to hand off and pitch the ball to as they scored “half a hundred on ‘em, as Switzer would say I remember watching them play, graduate and worry about the future of the team only to see the next guy
step up.
The future looks bright for Zachary sports next year and there are several athletes that appear to be ready to “step up.” Coach David Brewerton will welcome back both starting running backs Jeremey Patton and Tylek Lewis who were incredibly explosive last year They will work behind a rebuilt offensive line that graduated several seniors.
The ZHS girls basketball team returns a young but experienced team with only Raymond graduating.
The ZHS boys basketball team will return All Metro, All State and finals MVP Ian Edmond. On the track, coach Chris Car-
rier will have several returners including sophomore 100-meter hurdle state champion Serenity Early and junior J’Nyah Alexander the state champion in the triple jump.
Those are athletes that did great things last year but there will be others. Who will be the next Jamelle Holieway to come off the bench as a freshman to replace Troy Aikman (yes, Aikman started at Oklahoma as a triple-option quarterback before breaking his ankle and transferring to UCLA) and lead their team to a championship. That is the tremendous thing about watching kids grow up. Some catch on faster than others and some are late bloomers. In the end, it takes great coaching to put them in the right place to maximize their talents. Zachary is blessed to have an outstanding group of coaches at all levels that have and will continue to get as much performance and development out of Zachary kids as possible. How do I know? As with every other year about this time, I am reflecting on incredible teams, championships and notable individual athletic achievements. Can’t wait to see what next year brings.
