Court blocks mailing of abortion pills
BY GEOFF MULVIHILL Associated Press
A federal appeals court has restricted access to one of the most common means of abortion in the U.S. by blocking mailing of prescriptions of mifepristone. A panel of the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is requiring that the abortion pill be distributed only in person at clinics. “Every abortion facilitated by FDA’s action cancels Louisiana’s ban on medical abortions and undermines its policy that ‘every unborn child is a human being from the moment of conception and is, therefore, a legal person,’” the ruling states. Judges have long deferred to the Food and Drug Administration’s judgments on the safety and appropriate regulation of drugs. FDA officials under President Donald Trump have repeatedly stated the agency is conducting a new review of mifepristone’s safety, at the direction of the president. The judges noted in their ruling that the FDA “could not say when that review might be complete and admitted it was still collecting data.” In a court filing, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and a woman who says she was coerced into taking abortion pills requested that the FDA rules be rolled back to when the pills were allowed to be prescribed and dispensed only in person. Murrill heralded the ruling as a win for “women and babies.” “The Biden abortion cartel facilitated the deaths of thousands of Louisiana babies (and millions in other states) through illegal mail-order abortion pills. Today, that nightmare is over, thanks to the hard work of my office and our friends at Alliance

Ballot includes contentious U.S. Senate election, St. George schools amendment but no U.S. House races INSIDE
Staff report A seismic U.S. Supreme Court ruling has pushed Louisiana to cancel its congressional races, but early voting begins as scheduled Saturday for many other elections on the May 16 ballot. A critical measure on the ballot for Baton Rouge-area voters is Amendment 2, which would create a school district in St. George, the new city in East Baton Rouge Parish. Supporters say residents of the area have long been underserved by the parish school system; opponents say a breakaway district would undermine East Baton Rouge Parish public schools. There are five schools inside the city limits of St. George that would undergo changes should the amendment pass.

WBR officials sue journalist in public records dispute BY AIDAN McCAHILL Staff writer
A monthslong clash over public records requests has prompted West Baton Rouge Parish officials to sue the founder of a small local news outlet — and has drawn a national freedom of information group into the fray. The West Baton Rouge Parish government says it sued in response to threatened litigation from journalist John Summers. Summers argues the suit is aimed at stifling his investigative reporting into the West Baton Rouge Fire Department. Summers is the editor and main reporter for the West Baton Rouge Independent, which covers governmental affairs in the parish. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a national pro bono legal group, countersued the parish on

As of earlier this week, the Zydeco’s official social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok were no longer available. Established in 2023, the Zydeco broke the league record for season attendance with more than 110,000 attendees, raking in $8.1 million in economic impact for the city.
