Make sure your pup has plenty of safe spaces before the fireworks start.
The best New Year’s Eve for pets is a quiet night at home Seven ways to make NYE peaceful for pets
Long before we count down to midnight and welcome the New Year, the celebrations are already starting. While fireworks are exciting for people, they can be overwhelming and frightening for pets. The loud booms, sudden cracks and bright flashes can cause panic and tempt even the calmest aniTraci mals to bolt in fear. Howerton New Year’s Eve ANIMAL consistently ranks RESCUE as one of the busiest times of year for lost pets. Frightened animals don’t think rationally — they simply react. Dogs may jump fences, push through doors or dig under gates in a desperate attempt to escape the noise. Cats may also slip out unnoticed, hiding under a house or car near home. Even pets that usually handle thunderstorms or loud environments with ease can react differently to fireworks. The unpredictability and intensity of the sounds can heighten anxiety and stress. Signs your pet may be struggling with fireworks include: n Heavy panting or drooling n Trembling or shaking n Pacing or restlessness n Hiding or clinging to family members n Excessive barking or whining n Attempts to escape n Loss of appetite

Christmas tree recycling programs aim to shore up area shorelines BY EVA JACOB BARKOFF Contributing writer
The holidays are ending, and many residents may be ready to take down their Christmas trees. Once the ornaments and lights are packed away for next year and the strands of tinsel have lost their shine, consider recycling your tree. Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles and St. Bernard parishes all are participating in the annual Christmas Tree recycling program to help stabilize the state’s shorelines and marsh areas. “Christmas tree recycling keeps them out of the landfills,” said Kristi Trail, the executive director of the Pontchartrain Conservancy. “To really save our coast, we need large-scale projects such as river diversions that will be sustainable for the long term.” Here is the list of pickup days and times parishes by parish and some ad-

Austen’s 250th birthday inspires a series of craft and movie events Author Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, which was on Dec. 16, is still being celebrated with a series of events at numerous libraries this January. Dating back to 10th-century England, the practice reached its peak of popularity in the second half of the 17th century but continued throughout the 18th century. At the time, the art of aging book edges was done by specialists, as the ornamentation was seen as a central part of the book’s appearance. Cyanotype painting — 2 p.m. Jan. 24. process that produces a cyan-blue print. Objects or negatives are placed on treated paper and exposed to sunlight. The areas exposed to light turn blue, while covered areas remain white. After exposure, the print is rinsed in water to develop the image. This technique is known for its simplicity and distinctive blue color. 3D wax seals — 6 p.m. Jan. 24. 3D wax seals are decorative stamps used to create raised impressions in wax. the day can help pets rest more easily when fireworks begin. A mentally and physically content dog is better equipped to handle stress.
5. Check identification before the countdown Make sure collars fit properly and ID tags are current. If your pet isn’t microchipped, consider the New Year a perfect time to add that extra layer of protection. If it is microchipped, confirm your contact information is up to date.
1. Celebrate without them outdoors
6. Watch for leftovers and hazards
Fireworks displays and outdoor celebrations are no place for pets. Even dogs that seem unfazed can panic without warning or attempt to chase fireworks, risking serious injury.
Party foods, alcohol and firework debris pose real risks. After celebrations end, inspect your yard for spent fireworks and trash that curious pets might ingest.
2. Create a calm indoor retreat
7. Talk to your veterinarian if anxiety is severe
Keep pets safely inside, ideally in a quiet, familiar space where they feel comfortable. Close windows and curtains, and play calming music, white noise or the television to help soften outside sounds. Long-lasting chews, puzzle toys or a stuffed Kong can help redirect nervous energy.
Some pets need additional support. Your veterinarian can recommend behavior strategies, calming aids or medications when appropriate. No pet should face New Year’s night in fear or end up lost because of it. The New Year is about fresh starts, resolutions and looking ahead. With a little preparation, we can ensure our pets start the year safe, secure and right where they belong — at home with the people who love them most. Wishing everyone a safe and happy start to 2026!
3. Adjust routines for the holiday window Fireworks rarely happen just at midnight. They often begin days before and continue after the holiday. Walk dogs earlier than usual, secure leashes with both a harness and collar, and always accompany pets into the yard — even fenced ones.
4. Tire them out early A long walk, play session or enrichment activity earlier in

Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Burns performs opera, musical theater, recital and concert works throughout North America in vocal repertoire spanning more than 400 years. He has sung with opera companies and orchestras such as the Chautauqua Opera, Opera Roanoke, Memphis Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Little Orchestra Society of New York, the Roanoke Symphony
Orchestra, Charleston Chamber Opera, Opera Project Columbus and the Oxford Shakespeare Festival. Shaneyfelt is an associate professor of music in collaborative piano at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he coaches singers, provides musical direction for the opera program, and collaborates in recital regularly with faculty and students. He completed doctoral studies in the collaborative piano studio of Martin Katz at the University of Michigan. GENEALOGY: Kenneth Louis Cantrelle will sign and discuss copies of his new book, “Louisiana Cantrelles: 1720-2024, a Genealogy,” at 1 p.m. Jan. 10, at the Westwego Library, 635 Fourth St. Cantrelle presents a family tree chart that is seven and one-half feet long and includes more than 500 Cantrelle names in Louisiana over a period of 304 years, 1720-2024. Cantrelle says he started researching his genealogy in 1975. After retirement in 1997, he began writing, designing and typing Louisiana Cantrelles. There was no genealogy information on the computer then, so he designed his own method of recording. Chris Smith is manager of adult programming at the Jefferson Parish Public Library.

Nealy Frentz’s life is coming up roses. The renowned chef and cofounder of Lola in Covington will be on Louisiana’s float in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. It’s a full circle moment for Frentz, a California native born in Pasadena Hospital who has more recently been a lieutenant and member of the parading, allfemale northshore Krewe of Eve for 10 years. “This one, I don’t have to buy beads for,” she quipped of the upcoming parade in the city of her birth. “I went to the Rose Parade when I was young. I don’t know if people still do this, but you would sleep on the sidewalk to reserve your spot the night before. I distinctly remember doing that,” Frentz said. “I remember the floats being huge and magical back then. I can’t imagine what they look like now.” But she looks forward to finding out soon and is thrilled to be riding. Her family moved from California years ago, and she’s been back a few times to see old friends. Now she’s going home to ride in the Rose Parade of her youth. Lola will mark its 20th anniversary in January and is still a hot spot for locals and out-oftowners. “We are busy,” Frentz said with a laugh. “I tell people all

the time, Covington, especially downtown Covington, we have seen the ups and downs, and right now it’s on fire; there are so many restaurants and businesses opening. It’s awesome. There’s always something to do.” Frentz spent the first 15 years of her life in the San Fernando Valley before going to college at Johnson and Wales in Rhode Island. There she met her husband, Keith, a Covington native and chef, and together (Keith is the other co-founder) they opened Lola’s after Katrina. The two chefs are taking their kids, Holden and Ella, to California for the parade. Nealy said her kids keep asking what she’s supposed to wear (she doesn’t know yet), how long the parade will be (three hours), and if she’s throwing anything (no). Nothing except Southern charm, smiles and waves, Frentz clarified. Riders must be in position by 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, so Frentz will sit on the float for the duration, and after the parade concludes, there will be a huge party for riders and the public to see all the floats up close.

Louisiana’s float features a giant pelican stirring a seafood gumbo full of Gulf Coast seasonings. The float will be led by a classic shrimp boat carrying fresh Gulf seafood as a tribute to the men and women in the state’s seafood industry. It’s no Mardi Gras parade, but the Tournament of Roses parade turns 137 years old on Jan. 1 and certainly has a distinct charm. It will be shown on various ABC and NBC affiliates throughout the nation. “Growing up as a child, I didn’t do Mardi Gras; we didn’t turn on the TV and see floats. My family is from Biloxi, and I was never involved in that sort of upbringing, as far as Carnival is concerned, but we would always turn on the Rose Parade,” Frentz said. “I am very, very excited.” The Rose Parade will follow a 5.5-mile route, with Earvin “Magic” Johnson as grand marshal. Up to 40 floats, each covered in individually placed flowers or other natural materials (such as leaves, seeds or bark), along with marching bands and equestrian units, will parade to the theme of “The Magic of Teamwork.”

While specific 2026 dates are not yet available, the program will likely begin Thursday and continue until Jan. 15. For more information, go to the website sbpg.net or call (504) 2784200.

Arlene Meraux Elementary has launched an Adopt a Drain program in which students conduct routine cleanups, collect and categorize debris, and log their findings using digital data-collection tools. Third-grade teacher Christina Crego, who recently participated in the Mississippi River Delta Institute, leads the program. The institute equipped her with a storm drain stewardship kit and the training needed to implement hands-on environmental projects with her students. Their focus is on maintaining the storm drain areas surrounding the school’s parking lot, helping prevent litter and debris from entering local waterways. The information students compile is submitted to the institute, helping researchers to monitor environmental trends across the region. This initiative not only supports local environmental health but
also gives students a chance to engage in learning that connects classroom lessons in science and social responsibility to real-world action. Crego recently was named the districtwide elementary teacher of the year for St. Bernard Parish Public Schools. “Adopting our school’s storm drain has given my students the chance to learn by doing,” said Crego. “When children see the impact of their efforts right outside their classroom, it turns science into something real, meaningful and empowering.” The Mississippi River Delta Institute, run by Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education and hosted locally each summer at Docville Farm through the support of the Arlene Meraux Foundation, brings educators together to explore the region’s unique coastal ecosystems and develop classroom-ready environmental projects.
