Popular specialty grocer Trader Joe’s made its Lafayette intentions official, agreeing to purchase just under 3 acres for a store near River Ranch. The Monrovia, California-based retailer closed on a deal earlier this month for land at 1710 Camellia Blvd., land records show. Staff map Company officials have not responded to requests for comment, but a source close to the deal indicated construction of the 13,500-square-foot store could be complete by midyear. “Lafayette has been asking for this one for a long time,” Mayor-President Monique Boulet said. “I’m excited to see this officially move forward. Trader Joe’s choosing Lafayette is a strong indicator that we are headed in the right direction.” Preliminary site work has begun at the corner of Camellia and Bluebird Drive. Trader Joe’s was approved for a building permit by Lafayette Consolidated Government in October, with work valued at $6.5 million. The news comes days after officials in St. Tammany Parish announced a Trader Joe’s store will open in Mandeville. It ends almost a year of speculation and permitting with Lafayette Consolidated Government after its Board of Zoning Adjustment approved a variance for the building in January, the first sign that Trader Joe’s was interested in opening a Lafayette store. “Trader Joe’s investment reflects Lafayette’s continued growth and its appeal as a

Local officials in Tangipahoa Parish say they have little information about a possible detention facility for people arrested by ICE that The Washington Post has reported could be built in Hammond as part of efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to speed up deportations.
